Chapter 23 Ever After
Epilogue
"Blaine, you're going to be late for your own graduation if you don't get your rear in gear," Kurt yelled out. He was sitting in the living room with their kids all of them already dressed. Blaine always joked about how long it took Kurt to get ready. Today though, Kurt was not only dressed before Blaine, but he had also gotten both kids dressed while he waited.
"Kurt, sweetheart, have you seen my tie?" Blaine yelled out.
"You mean the one hanging around your neck?" Kurt asked, walking into their bedroom to see what was taking him so long.
"Oh… yeah," Blaine said, grinning at Kurt, before reaching up to tie his tie. Blaine was finally graduating from law school. He had doubled up on some of his courses and was actually finishing a year earlier than initially planned. Blaine had always loved school, loved learning something new, but he was ready to move on and start the next chapter in his life, their life.
"I've never seen you look so nervous before. Not even the day we got engaged and that's saying something," Kurt said as he smacked Blaine's hand away with a smile so that he could tie Blaine's tie for him before he had a chance to destroy it. Blaine's hands were shaking horribly.
"Kurt, do you realize this is going to be the first time since I was five years old that I won't be in school? My whole life, I have had somewhere I had to go, something I had to do, somewhere I was expected to be," Blaine said, looking almost sad. "Now, what do I do?"
"Well today, you're going to walk across that stage and accept the diploma you've worked so hard for. You're going to have to deal with the embarrassment of being the graduate with the loudest cheering family in history, especially from your children," Kurt said. He placed his hands on each side of Blaine's face, framing it the way Blaine always did him, forcing him to look at him. "Then, once the family has all gone back home and the kids have finally gone to sleep, we get to have that conversation you've been avoiding for months."
"I haven't been avoiding it," Blaine said, leaning in and placing a kiss on Kurt's lips.
"Yes, you have, but we're not getting into that now. Your parents should be here any minute and I know you don't want them to see you in just your shirt and boxers," Kurt said laughing, just realizing that Blaine had already put on his socks and shoes but had forgotten to put on his pants. Blaine looked down and laughed, slipping off his shoes so he could put his pants on. He was just stepping back into his shoes when the doorbell rang.
"You ready?" Kurt asked, leaning in to place a kiss on Blaine's cheek, glad to see that he seemed to be calming down.
"Ready. Now, let's get this show on the road," Blaine answered with a smile reaching down and taking Kurt's hand in his.
Blaine opened the door with a smile on his face. He had been looking forward to seeing his parents. With the extra classes and studying he had had to do, it had been a while since he had been able to go home. Blaine had been expecting Michael and Pam but was shocked to see Cooper walk through the door as well. He had been telling Blaine for months that due to a scheduling conflict, he wouldn't be able to be there for Blaine's graduation. Blaine had been a little hurt that Cooper put his career before his family once again, but had secretly been happy as well. Blaine knew that even though today was supposed to be about him, about his accomplishments, Cooper would somehow find a way to make it all about him the way he always did.
When Kara, Noah, Burt, Carol, Finn, and Alex arrived, they walked outside and got into the limousines Michael had hired to take them to the venue where the graduation was being held. Michael was so proud of Blaine, proud of the man he had become. He loved both of his boys equally, but he would be lying if he said that Blaine wasn't his favorite. They had had a shaky relationship when Blaine had first come out, but after almost losing him at the Sadie Hawkins dance, Michael realized there was nothing more important than family. Blaine, the person, hadn't changed. He was still the same loveable, crazy nut he had always been. Michael just had to realize that the life he had always dreamed of for his son could still happen if not in the way he thought.
oOoOo
The rest of the day was perfect. Blaine walked across the stage and got his diploma, smiling as he heard his family, especially his children, cheer him on. That moment was something he had always dreamed of, being surrounded by family as he accomplished something he had worked his whole life for. Cooper actually behaved himself for once, allowing Blaine to have his moment in the spotlight, acting like the proud big brother, never once trying to pull focus to himself.
After graduation, Michael and Pam took everyone out to lunch, champagne was ordered, and toasts to Blaine were made by everyone present. The toast that touched Blaine the most was the one from Max. "To Daddy. Yove you." He had looked so serious holding his little sippy cup up the way he had seen his Papa do, before a grin slipped across his face and he broke out in giggles. No matter how many times Blaine heard Max call him Daddy, it never got old. Blaine was so proud of that little boy.
"I love you, too, son, and thank you," Blaine said with a smile.
When everyone left, the kids had been put to bed for their nap, and it was just himself and Kurt, Blaine knew it was time for the talk he had been putting off. Kurt and Blaine had been getting along perfectly the last few months, almost as if the wrinkle in their relationship had never happened. Still, Blaine knew it was time for the talk, the talk he was almost afraid to have, afraid everything would somehow fall apart and he would lose Kurt for good this time. Blaine had a big decision he needed to make, a decision that would affect not only himself, but Kurt and their children as well.
"Ok, are you ready to talk about it?" Kurt asked softly, sitting on the couch and turning so that he was facing Blaine.
Kurt was so afraid to have this conversation, of not knowing where it was going to lead, but also knowing it couldn't be put off any longer. He had tried to give Blaine time to talk about what was going on. Kurt had tried to give him the space he seemed to need to work through whatever issues he was facing, but he knew it couldn't be put off any longer.
Over the last month, Kurt noticed how quiet at times Blaine would get, spending more and more time at his piano with a far off look in his eyes when he didn't think Kurt was watching. Kurt lost count of how many times he had walked into the living room to find Blaine leaning on the piano keys lost in thought. He had learned early on in their relationship that when Blaine was struggling with something, when he had something he needed to work through, Blaine turned to his piano, his music. Kurt knew something was wrong. He was afraid he was losing him. That Blaine had decided they weren't working, that they weren't worth it after all, and that thought was breaking his heart. They were still getting along. They weren't fighting and Blaine was still as loving and caring in the bedroom as he had always been. He still made Kurt feel loved and cherished, but something was off. Kurt felt like Blaine was pulling away, hiding something from him. He decided this morning that after they got home from graduation and after Blaine had his family time, it was time to talk.
Blaine looked at Kurt for a moment before standing up, walking over to the window and looking out over Central Park. How was he supposed to do this? How was he supposed to have a conversation with Kurt that he was afraid would destroy them? He had spent the last month trying to figure out what to do. Blaine hadn't said anything to Kurt because he felt like he still had time to figure things out. This morning, he realized his time was up, and this conversation couldn't be put off any longer.
"Kurt, I love you. You know that, right?" Blaine asked, turning around so that he was facing him.
"Why do I already not like this conversation?" Kurt asked, getting a sinking feeling in his stomach that his worst fear was about to be realized. Blaine was going to say they were over.
"No, sweetheart, it's nothing bad, I promise. I hope it's not anyway," Blaine answered, quickly walking back over to Kurt and sitting down, pulling him into a hug and placing a kiss on top of his head.
"Then what is it, Blaine? Is there something going on that I don't know about?" Kurt asked, hoping he wasn't about to end them after everything they had been through. He could feel tears fill his eyes at that thought. How could he lose Blaine? How could he possibly survive that?
Blaine could see right away where Kurt's mind went, and could almost kick himself for putting that look on Kurt's beautiful face, hating the worry he had caused. "Ahh, sweetheart. I'm so sorry. I know what you are thinking and it couldn't be farther from the truth. I love you now more than ever. In case you didn't realize it yet, I'm crazy about you. You and our kids are my life. Without the three of you, I would be nothing."
"Then what is it Blaine? What is going on with you then? Don't think I haven't noticed how quiet you've gotten, or how often you get this far off look in your eyes. I know something is wrong. I just don't know why you won't talk to me about it so I can try to fix it," Kurt said, feeling as tears ran down his cheeks.
"Nothing's wrong, sweetheart. That I can promise you. I just have something important I need to talk to you about, and I'm afraid of how you might take it," Blaine said, reaching his hand out to cup Kurt's cheek, using his thumb to dry his tears.
"Are you cheating on me?" Kurt whispered a stricken look on his face.
"What… God no, Kurt. How could you ask me something like that? How could you even think I would cheat on you?" Blaine asked, standing up, running his hands through his hair. How could Kurt even think he would ever want anyone else? How had he fucked things up so badly?
"You don't think I haven't noticed you pulling away from me? Sure, we're still connecting in our bed. You don't act like you have lost interest in me, but you aren't the same when we are out of it," Kurt answered, hoping he was wrong but so afraid he wasn't.
"Kurt, I'm sorry if I ever made you feel like I could cheat on you. I'm sorry I haven't talked to you before now. I have just been trying to work things out in my head. Trying to figure out how to start this conversation," Blaine answered.
"Ok, Blaine. Talk to me now. Trust me, I'm all ears," Kurt said, trying not to sound as impatient as he was starting to feel.
"The last time we were in Westerville, while you were outside with the kids, dad talked to me about his law firm. He wants to expand and bring in more lawyers. He wants me to join his firm. He was talking about making me his business partner jn a few years. He wants to rename it 'Anderson and Son,'" Blaine said, standing back up, and starting to pace, waiting for what he just said to finally hit Kurt.
"Blaine, that is wonderful. Why didn't you tell me before, we could have celebrated," Kurt said with a big grin, feeling nothing but relief until it hit him what Blaine had said, "Oh."
"Yeah, Kurt 'oh.' Dad's office is in Columbus, and in case you've forgotten, we live in New York. It's not as if I can commute from New York to Columbus, Ohio every day," Blaine said, sitting back down, leaning his head on the back of the couch, closing his eyes with a sigh.
"Why didn't you tell me, talk to me about it so we could figure this out together?" Kurt asked, not understanding.
"How could I ask you to follow me back to Ohio, Kurt? How can I ask you to leave the one place you've always dreamed of being? I couldn't do that to you. I couldn't ask you to give up your dream for me, for mine." Blaine said, trying to figure out how to make him understand.
"Blaine, dreams change. What we have together is the most important thing to me. I can design anywhere. Now, if you had asked me to move back to Lima, we would have fought. But I can deal with Columbus, no problem at all," Kurt said with a smile on his face, relief spreading through him. "Plus, I know two sets of grandparents who will be more than happy to have us move closer."
"You're serious Kurt? You'll really think about moving back to Ohio with me?" Blaine asked, not believing how lucky he was.
"No, Blaine. There is no thinking about it involved. I'm with you wherever you decide to go. Like I said I could work anywhere, but for you, this is a chance of a lifetime. A chance I'm not going to let you pass on," Kurt said.
"I love you sooo much," Blaine said, grabbing Kurt, pulling him into his arms, and slamming his lips onto Kurt's before grabbing his hand and pulling him to their bed.
oOoOo
After the decision was made that Blaine would join his father's law firm, a bigger decision had to be made... housing. Since neither one of them technically had a job at that time, they spent two weeks in between Lima and Westerville looking for the perfect home for them and their family. They were lucky to find what they were looking for in Westerville. Kurt and Blaine had decided that since they would both be working in Columbus, but liked the schools in Westerville, they would start their lives together there.
After their wedding, Blaine took Kurt back to the B&B in Hyannis Port Maine, where they became engaged. Only this time, they got to spend two weeks away together. Kurt and Blaine had no problem finding someone willing to watch their children while they were gone. The only problem they had had was deciding which set of grandparents got to keep Ali and Max first.
It was finally decided that the Anderson's would watch them the first week since the second week Michael wouldn't have time to spend with his grandchildren due to work. He had the name of his law firm changed to 'Anderson and Son' and was going to be working with the new lawyers they had brought on board. Once Blaine got back from his honeymoon, they would be moving to a more prominent location that Michael had purchased. He wanted to make sure that Blaine's office was as big as his. Michael had changed his mind about waiting a year before allowing Blaine to be a named partner and had given him a full partnership the day Blaine had called his father excited to say he would happily join his firm.
After the honeymoon, life for Kurt and Blaine really began. Blaine had already adopted Max, and the paperwork had been started for Kurt to become Ali's Papa legally. Kurt opened a children's boutique and sold his Hummel originals, and his business soon took off. Blaine loved working for his father, loved the office that had been picked out for him. He loved his job, but what he loved the most was when he got to go home to his family. The four of them settled into life as a family, and it was better than they could have ever imagined.
oOoOo
Twelve Years Later:
"Dad, do you really think I'll make it? That they'll let me join?" Max asked, standing in front of Blaine while he adjusted Max's tie. Max usually did ok, he had been going to Dalton for two weeks, and loved it there. Max had even managed, with his Papa's help, to learn how to tie a tie, but today he was too nervous to get his hands to work right. Today, if everything went right, he would be joining the Warblers, following in his dad's steps proudly.
"Max, son, I'm sure of it, and I couldn't be prouder of you," Blaine said, looking at his son's happy face, looking so much like Kurt. He fell more in love with his son every day.
"Do you really think so?" Max asked again.
"I know so. Now, remember what we went over for your audition. Keep your hand gestures to a minimum and go out there and kill it," Blaine said, pulling Max into a hug.
"I will," Max said, hugging his dad back.
Max had loved Dalton the minute he walked in the door. He had grown up hearing his dad talking about Dalton Academy, how Blaine had loved going there, how he had always felt like he belonged. Max had been proud his first day, walking down halls his dad would have walked down. What had made him even prouder, though, was the day he had passed a trophy case where pictures of all the past Warblers was kept. Max was just passing by it when something caught his eye and had him turning around. There, front and center, the same cheesy grin on his face was a younger version of his dad staring back at him. From the look of the picture, they had been at some kind of competition, and judging by the trophy his dad was holding, they had won. He stared at that picture until he had felt someone stop and walk over beside him.
"You're looking at Blaine Anderson. My dad said he was the best soloist this school ever had, and he should know because he was over the Warbler counsel when Blaine was here. My dad said he had the most amazing voice he had ever heard. Sorry, my name is Wes. I'm now over the Warbler council like my dad was," he said with a smile holding out his hand to shake Max's.
"Hi, my name is Max Anderson, and that's my dad," Max said with a proud smile on his face, pointing at Blaine.
"So, are you going to come and try out for the Warbler's then?" Wes asked excitedly. If Max was anywhere near as good as Wes' dad said Blaine was, they would be a shoo-in for Nationals.
"I think I might," Max had said with a big grin.
Max did go on and follow his dad's footsteps when he was allowed to join the Warblers, and just like his father before him, he became their lead soloist all four years he was at Dalton. After graduation, Max made his fathers proud when he told them he wanted to join the family business and become a lawyer like his dad. Blaine was so proud, and he couldn't keep the smile off of his face, already wondering if it was too early to rename the law firm 'Anderson and Sons.'
Blaine walked on air until that night when he had to comfort his heartbroken husband. Max had decided he didn't want to go to NYU as his dad had. Max wanted to go to and had already been accepted at Harvard. He would be heading to Boston two weeks after High School graduation.
When Ali was old enough, she was enrolled in Dalton's sister school Crawford Country Day. Like her brother, she also followed in her dad's footsteps joining her school's glee club as well. Kurt and Blaine couldn't have been prouder of their children when they had been accepted, that is until they realized that now their children would be competing in rival glee clubs. Blaine and Kurt both had nightmares of having to support one of their children over the other. Luckily, Ali and Max never seemed to compete against each other. The only year they had been scheduled to, Ali had gotten sick and hadn't made it to the competition. Blaine and Kurt wondered if she was really sick or if that was her way of keeping peace in the family, or her just not wanting to compete against the big brother she still loved and worshipped above all else.
A year after Max had left for Boston, Ali informed Kurt and Blaine that she too would be moving to Boston as well, that she and Max were going to get an apartment to share. She had decided she wanted to follow in her dad's and big brother's footsteps and become a lawyer as well. After graduation, both kids came home and joined the family business, making their father's and grandfather so very proud.
The End.
