Quinn was sat at her desk. She had been at Hank's the night before for Daniel's first birthday. Cami had a great time playing with her cousin. Quinn loved to see it. Justin had really become a family man and it was heartwarming and amazing. She knew Camille would have been so proud of him.
"You look like you're in a world of your own" Erin said sitting on the edge of her desk.
"I'm just thinking about what a good night it was" She replied taking a sip of her coffee.
"It's good when we're all together" Erin nodded.
She got back to work while Erin was called into Hank's office. She felt like she was getting to grips with everything and soon it would be summer and then time to start law school. Everything in her life was changing so much but she couldn't help but feel it was changing for the better.
She raised an eyebrow as she watched Mouse walk over to Jay's desk and start whispering.
"What was that about?" She asked as Jay walked into Hank's office.
"Nothing" Mouse said walking back to his desk.
"Don't lie to me" She said "you're not good at it"
"Oh, called out" Adam laughed shaking his head.
"Don't make me get the baton out Roman left me" He warned before turning to Quinn and lowering his voice "Justin knew the victim, there's a lot of calls and texts between them last month and last night"
Quinn began to feel worried as Hank and Erin said they were going out. Justin had worked really hard to turn his life around and to be there for his family.
She decided to take a walk downstairs to see Trudy and go to the vending machine.
"You need a chocolate run?" Trudy asked looking at her face.
"Yeah" She sighed "Tell me all about your newly wed bliss to keep my mind from racing"
"It couldn't be better" Trudy told her "I said the honeymoon was amazing, but every day is like that"
"He's lucky to have you" She replied as Trudy handed her a candy bar "Thanks"
"You and Mouse still a thing?" Trudy asked.
"Yes" She replied feeling the smile creep onto her face "He wants to move in together"
"That's great" Trudy told her.
"It's not too fast?" She asked.
"You two were in love before you were together" Trudy shrugged "Nadia would have loved it; she was all about the romance and living in the moment. She used to tell me she was sure you two would end up together"
"She did?" She asked smiling fondly.
"I still think you can do better" Trudy told her "But if he makes you happy"
"Thanks" She laughed "I should probably head…"
"Quinn" Mouse said walking down the corridor.
"Oh my god what is it?" She asked seeing the look on his face.
"Justin's been shot they're taking him to Chicago med" He told her.
Quinn felt like her legs were going to give way under her. Trudy took her arm to help steady her.
"I have to go" She said "I don't know what to…"
"Transfer the phones down here I've got you covered" Trudy told her "I'll call Deborah and ask her to pick up Cami, if she can't I'll send burgess and we'll bring her back here"
"I'll drive you" Mouse told her.
He put his arms around her as she buried her face in his shoulder trying to pull herself together. Hank was going to need them all she couldn't let herself fall apart. He took her hand and walked her out to the car. She was silent the whole way there.
Quinn arrived at the same time as Olive and Daniel who had been brought in by Antonio and Kevin. When they walked through into the Emergency room Justin was in with a team of doctors and nurses. Antonio took Daniel as Olive was about to break down.
"I'll take him" She said taking him from Antonio and holding him close as Kevin took Olives hand.
"Are you ok?" Mouse asked putting his hand on the small of her back.
"Yes" She nodded rocking Daniel soothingly.
"Get everyone back to 21" Hank said "Now"
"I'm staying with Olive" She said.
"Thank you" Olive said as she took her hand and they walked out into the waiting room.
Hank just nodded. She understood he was devastated but she was scared he would go off the deep end.
Quinn hugged Erin tightly as she left. Justin was like a brother to her too.
She sat with Olive and handed her Daniel. Olive was fighting to hold back tears.
"I don't know what I'll do if…" Olive said.
"We don't know anything yet" She said.
"Thank you for staying with me" Olive said "I know we don't know each other that well"
"Justin is family" She said "That means so are you, Cami calls you Auntie Olive"
Trudy had called to say Deborah wasn't available. Quinn didn't really want Cami around the station with everything that was going on. She headed outside to call Gabby.
"Hey Gabby" She said her voice breaking slightly.
"What's going on?" Gabby asked, "Are you ok?"
"Justin is in the hospital; he was found in the trunk of his car shot" She replied "I'm here with Olive and his son, Deborah can't take Cami after school, Trudy was going to send Burgess to pick her up but…"
"I'll get her" Gabby said before she could finish "We'll make sure she's safe"
"Thanks Gabby" She said "I've got to go"
"I hope Justin pulls through" Gabby said.
Quinn made herself busy getting Olive a sweet tea to try and help with her nerves. She said she would wait for updates if Olive wanted to take Daniel for a walk outside when he got fussy, but she didn't want to move. Justin had been moved to the ICU.
Sharon Goodwin asked them to come into Justin's room. Quinn held Daniel while Olive sat by Justin's bedside. Quinn could feel the tears ready to fall seeing Justin in that bed hooked up to a ventilator and the machines, but she couldn't breakdown. Daniel started to fuss.
"Do you want me to take him for a walk so you can talk?" She asked.
"Thanks Quinn" Olive nodded "He's probably hungry"
"Then we will go and get some lunch" She said squeezing her hand on the way out "I'll be just down the hall if you need me"
Quinn was sat in the canteen feeding Daniel when Olive came in. Her eyes were red from crying. Quinn just put her arms around her and let her cry.
"What happened?" She asked afraid to hear the answer.
"He won't wake up, they said there's no brain activity" Olive said her voice cracking "I said they should withdraw life support, but I asked Ms. Goodwin to speak to Hank first, am I a terrible person?"
"Oh god" She said sitting down not letting go of Olive's hand "No you're not, you're a person being asked to make an impossible decision doing the best you can"
Quinn couldn't imagine making a choice like that. She knew logically it was the right thing to do and no doubt what Justin would have wanted. But it wasn't a logical situation. It was purely emotional. Quinn asked Olive if she could go and sit with Justin for a bit. Olive said she would be through once Daniel had been fed.
Quinn walked in and sat down at Justin's bedside. She struggled to find the words to say.
"You know" She said taking his hand "You may not have been the brother I wanted but you were the brother I needed. I am so sorry I wasn't around when you needed me. You were always there for me. I love you so much, so does Cami. I know your Mom is going to be waiting for you with open arms"
Quinn wiped the tears from her face as Olive came in the room and she stood up to leave.
"You don't have to go" Olive told her.
"I'll just be outside" She reassured her "You should have some time alone, but I'm there if you need me"
Quinn did and didn't know how Olive must be feeling. She knew what it was like to lose the father of your child. But Justin and Olive were in love. Noah had been overseas, and Quinn knew she could look after Cami. She knew she had support. Olive was losing a husband and was facing becoming a single parent. Quinn knew Hank would always be there for her and so she, and Erin.
When Hank came, she couldn't bring herself to watch him say goodbye to his son. She felt her heart break into a million pieces.
She decided to call Erin.
"Hey" She said softly.
Asking if she was ok seemed like a stupid question at a time like this.
"Hi" Erin said, it was clear in her voice that she had been crying "Are you at the hospital?"
"I'm still here with Olive" She replied.
"Good I'm glad she's got you" Erin said.
"Are you coming here?" She asked.
"I need to work the case" Erin replied.
"I get it" She sighed "Please look after yourself too"
"Take care of you" Erin said as she hung up the phone.
Quinn looked up as Hank walked out of the room. He paused in the doorway. She gave him a hug without asking otherwise she knew he would have said no.
"Stay with Olive" He told her.
"Please be safe" She nodded "I'll take them back to my place"
Quinn knew Hank would be out for blood. She just hoped that he wouldn't do anything that could come back to hurt him.
Hank patted her on the shoulder before leaving without looking back.
She text Gabby and asked her if Cami could stop with them overnight. Gabby told her she would take Cami to the firehouse in the morning if she wanted to pick her up from there. She was thankful to her. She didn't know how she would be able to tell Cami what had happened. Not right away.
Later that night after Olive and Daniel had gone back to Voight's, Mouse had come over to sit with her.
He just held her on the couch.
"I have to break her heart again" She said shaking her head "I have no idea what to say"
"You'll figure it out" He told her kissing her forehead "I know you're not ok, but if there's anything I can do"
"Move in" she said sitting up.
"Do you really think now is the best time to make a decision like that?" He asked "Not that I don't want to, but I know you thought it was fast"
"It is fast" She nodded "But things can change in a heartbeat so if you're sure about someone why waste time"
"Ok" He said "We should talk about it in the morning, you need to try and get some sleep"
"Will you just hold me?" She asked.
Mouse offered to come with her the next day to pick up Cami, but she decided to go alone. She knew he was supposed to go into work and that they'd need him. Hank was taking some time off and Antonio was running the unit, he was going to need support. It made her feel better to know there were people there looking out for Erin.
When Quinn got to the firehouse Cami was sat at the squad table next to Kelly.
"Mom" Cami called out "Kelly didn't believe me that I'm good at poker, but I won all Capp's cookies"
"That's great" She said forcing a smile, but her voice couldn't quite match up.
"Play my next hand" Kelly said "I just need to go talk to your Mom, don't let me lose"
"I won't" Cami said.
Kelly led her outside and around the corner out of sight. She took a deep breath and leant against the wall.
"Hey" He said, "Gabby told me what happened, do you want me or Gabby to talk to her with you?"
"No" She said shaking her head and wiping her eyes "I have to do it; she just looks so happy and I don't want to hurt her"
"She's got you" He said "She'll be ok"
"Thanks Kelly" She said composing herself.
"You can go through to the conference room if you want" He told her.
Quinn walked over to Cami who had clearly just won again. She saw Gabby paused in the doorway and gave her a small smile.
"Hey sweetie" She said bending down to talk to her "Will you come and talk to Mommy?"
Gabby stood with Kelly outside of the conference room watching Quinn talk to her daughter. Gabby welled up seeing Cami start to cry and throw her arms around her Mom.
"They'll be ok" Kelly told her putting an arm around her.
"I hope so" Gabby sighed.
