Last chapter left off with four of our characters renting two rooms (at the government's expense.) Let's see what happens.

Chapter 28

Love in the soul

The Pacific Tower Medical Facility, Seattle.

The office on the 16th floor finds Commodore Giordano impatient with the questions being asked by a new doctor assigned to this very sensitive operation.

"Do you mean to tell me you volunteered for this assignment and no one has informed you of the special nature of it." Giordano leaves his seat behind the barren desk and walks to the uniformed Lieutenant. "I mean, you volunteered for an assignment that can be dangerous…and you know nothing about?" He tenses full lips before continuing. "The damn Russians may have a hit squad looking for these people…and are willing to kill anyone that gets in the way."
The new officer remains at attention. Though Giordano had told him to relax.

"Never mind the danger from…" He stops before informing the new staff member of the naval deaths associated with this project. Giordano has read the report concerning Donna's escape.

"Sir, I just know it concerns discoveries in certain marine life that can lead to a treatment of partial paralysis in our wounded." The Twenty something geneticist answers with a guarded tone.

"Malone," the superior officer takes a breath. "We're talking about an end to paralysis." His nostrils flex as he exhales. "Wipe it off the face of the map."
The young doctor's eyes freeze on his superior's lips as more medical information fills the young man's ears.

"You can now see why this is classified many levels above top-secret." Giordano licks his lips as his chest takes in another breath. "We answer only to the President." The Commodore tilts his head to stare at the human statue before him. "Only one member of the Joint Chiefs even know we exist." Waiting for a response from his subordinate, he straightens up and speaks.

"You also seem concerned about the young man and woman brought into this hospital."
A visible Adam's Apple moves as Malone prepares to speak.

"Sir, the report said they were both revived after being declared deceased." A slight tremble can be seen in Malone's right hand. "Then they went through major surgery." He stops, inhaling to fortify himself. "Now I see the girl walking around, asking to see her father…and the man?"

Giordano puts his hand on the perplexed young officer's shoulder.

"Sir, the man's vital signs. I saw them…" He shakes his head in disbelief. "They resemble an Olympic athlete or some long distance runner…but how? He was at death's door…no, he was dead. And their surgeries were just a few hours ago."

"I want you to sit down in my chair, I have something to tell you about those discoveries and," he sighs, "and that certain marine life I mentioned."

He guides the Lieutenant to the leather chair behind the desk.

"But sir, his body temperature. I don't understand."

"Shh, son. Shh…" The older man attempts to comfort the bewildered junior officer.

He then begins to speak.

"Now about those two patients…"

Malone sits in silence. His jaw opens as wide as it is humanly possible.

A motel room some distance from Seattle.

Maddie and Ryn sit beside each other on the queen-size bed. As the young heartsick biologist presents an erect posture. Her friend's hand places a firm grasp on her shoulder.

The solemn figure twitches from a slight quiver as she feels a soft downward slither from her neck. Ryn's slight but strong fingers glide to the hem of the anxious young woman's top.

"Ryn," a frail tone manages to fill the small room. "I know what you said about Ben and the two of us to Nicole and Xander." Her slender lips open as she steals enough air to speak. "I know it's really not possible."

Tears begin to form on her lower lids.

Ryn's face moves closer. Their lips touch. A strong thrust pushes a probing tongue into Maddie's mouth. Their embrace tightens as Ryn slides her moist lips along the cheek of the trembling figure at her side.

Maddie stretches her neck and turns to Ryn. Dark eyes stream out tears.

"I know this can never be. It is a fact. A heartbreaking fact. I can never be or have what you and Ben have." Maddie inhales, hoping to remain strong in the face of her despair.

"Maddie, I do not lie. I do not be false." Ryn's hands slide up the front of Maddie's blouse. The yellow cotton garment rises in slow fashion with the movement.

"Ryn," as if she wishes to protest, the young woman places her hand on the up-pulled top. Ryn's lips press against hers, causing the slight trembling hand to drop.

"Ryn, I love…"
"I know. Maddie, we both know. Ben is with us. He feels what I feel." The two figures fall downward. "He is safe. He is getting better. Hope is by his side."

After hearing Ryn's words, she sits up.

"That's what I mean. You are all connected. You are in each other's soul."

Ryn's eyes widen. She pushes Maddie to her back. The mermaid's breathing intensifies, as her hands tear into her clothes.

Maddie freezes at the sound of torn garments. Ryn stands before her naked.

An expression bordering on fear takes control of the helpless woman's expression.

Maddie leans deeper into the bed's dark blue quilt.

Ryn's fingers tug at her jeans. Maddie's hands move to the zipper. She is too late.

A stronger grip rips the metal clasp apart.

As the shredded pants descend toward her hips, Maddie's exposed breasts heave. She fights for breath as a moan leaves her curved lips.

"Maddie, you are in our souls." Ryn slides her mouth along a quivering stomach. Lifting her head, saliva drips from her lips. She bends forward and whispers. "And I will enter yours."

Maddie's gasps echo off the walls, as taut fingers pull the bed cover toward a writhing torso. Her crescendo of moans keep time with Ryn's surging tongue.
