Chapter 19…
{Jocelyn's POV}
I had left the room after delivering my ultimatum to the others.
I was heading to my room, I think at least.
I didn't know what to do.
I knew I had to tell the others that my daughter was inside these walls.
But I had to speak to her alone first, I needed to understand.
I threw my hands up in frustration and realised I actually had no clue where Clary was - her and Jace had disappeared.
I turned around and walked smack into my son Jonathan.
"Oh, hey, Jon. Did you want something?"
He looked at me like I had spoken in French.
"I don't want anything."
"I need to talk to you. You have barely spoke a word to me since you revealed I had a dead sister, who is actually alive and the literal spawn of the devil"
The hurt in his voice cut through me like a knife. I had been so wrapped up in my own trauma I hadn't begun to consider Jon.
"Jonathan, I don't know what to say. When Clarissa died you were only 3 years old."
"But mom, why don't I remember her?"
I could tell he was upset,
"Magnus Bane"
"What does Magnus have to do with this?"
"After the Uprising I thought it would be best to take you to Magnus. To bear the loss of a sister and a father - I thought the trauma would be too much."
His eyes wavered slightly.
"So I had Magnus take away your memories of Clarissa."
I saw his eyes dart up to mine, they were filled with betrayal and loss.
"Y… You took them from me?"
"I was only trying to protect you Jonathan. I never imagined you would ever need to find out"
"They weren't yours to take."
"Jon I was protecti-"
"No mother. You weren't. You were protecting yourself. If I remembered Clarissa, you would not be able to bear it. You did not consider me at all. Don't you dare tell me this bullshit about protection"
His words were venom.
I recoiled from my son. I looked up into his eyes and saw tears streaming down from them.
The look on his face caused my heart to ache, but knowing I was the source of his pain made my heart shatter.
{Jace's POV}
Soon after Jocelyn and Jonathan had left we disbanded.
Stephen and Robert were going to check the protective wards around the Institute.
Alec nodded for me and Izzy to follow him into one of the smaller interview rooms.
I followed them in and heard the click of the lock as I twisted the handle.
"It's her. It's always been her."
Izzy's voice didn't match her, it sounded frail and defeated.
I couldn't blame her, we had allowed the devil's daughter to enter our lives.
"But guys, remember what Jocelyn said. 'We cannot contain her if she is unwilling' does this mean that Clary wanted us to imprison her?"
Alec spoke with more precision, that was Alec. Always focusing on the facts and the task at hand.
"It would certainly make sense. Why was she so exposed in the clearing when you found me" I added at the end.
But I knew better.
Something wasn't adding up - Clary had not been expecting me by the Lake.
So why allow herself to be captured?
"Jace, where is Clary, Clarissa or whatever her goddamn name is?"
"I took her to the infirmary"
The lie slipped from my lips with ease.
"Do we tell our parents?"
Alec asked in a concerned tone.
"No"
I responded flatly.
"We have the element of surprise now, if we tell our parents then there's a chance that Clary could hear something and escape before we can get to her."
I explained quickly,
"We should act alone - she won't be expecting that."
The other two nodded - following my logic.
"We will meet back here in 10 minutes, I need to go to my room to change."
"Ok, we will grab the weapons"
And with that we left the room and temporarily went our separate ways.
{Clary's POV}
The second Wayland had left I grabbed my leather pants and shrugged them on.
Although I kept Jace's shirt on mind you.
I quickly rummaged through his draws.
Come on. Come on. You must have some sort of weapon in here.
I smirked as I discovered his stele in his bedside table and a seraph blade in his underwear draw.
What a place to hide a weapon blondie.
I slid the stele into my belt and tucked my hand behind my back, holding the blade.
And crept back under the covers.
I hadn't been lying there a minute before I heard the door creak open.
{Jace's POV}
I slipped inside the room, it was now about 10:30.
I saw Clary lying in bed.
As I made my way across the room I crouched next to my bed.
Seeing the rise and fall of her chest was so calming.
I had never seen anyone look so peaceful, it made me wince.
How could someone so deadly be this vulnerable.
I absentmindedly shifted a hair out of her face, revealing her calm face.
She was truly beautiful.
Without warning I felt a seraph blade graze my throat.
My eyes widened as I realised Clary had sat up abruptly, she was holding the blade to my throat.
"Clary?"
I asked her in a worried tone, one flick of her wrist and I was dead.
"It's time for me to go"
She replied in a flat tone.
"Clary, you know I can't let you do that"
I responded in a saddened voice rather than commanding. Truth was I didn't want to hurt her, but I knew what she was and I couldn't let her hurt anyone else.
"Why?"
She asked curiously,
"I know Clary, I know what you are"
Her eyes softened, as if what I had said hurt her.
"Then why come here? You know what danger you are putting yourself in"
"Because I think out of everyone here, I think I am the one least likely to get killed"
I spoke in a matter-of-fact tone, gaining a small smirk from Clary.
"You might be right Blondie."
She fluently switched the blade so it was on the back of my neck and used the hilt to shove me down onto the bed.
Before I even had the chance to get up off the bed, Clary had opened the door.
My face paled as I saw who stumbled into the room.
Max.
Max Lightwood.
He had obviously been leaning against the door - probably to see if I were in here.
As he fell in Clary grabbed him by the back of his shirt and held the blade to the base of his throat.
I stood up so fast I nearly fell over.
"Clary, hurt him and you will give everything up."
I tried to sound calming as I saw Max's face was stricken with fear.
"Give what up? You said it yourself, I am a demon.
And demons do not love."
She spat the last words out of her mouth as if it burned her.
"Look Clary, please just let him go. He's a kid"
Max was starting to shake now,
"Ja… Jace. What's going on?"
His voice tripped over itself.
"Hey buddy it's gonna be ok"
I glared up at Clary, she was going too far.
But I guess she didn't have a 'too far.'
"I'm sorry Jace, I have to go"
It was as if I could sense genuine sorrow in her voice.
{Izzy's POV}
"Alec, Jace is late."
I was worried, it had now been 15 minutes, Jace was never late.
Me and Alec were standing in the centre of the central room. Many shadowhunters talking around the various tables and screens.
Including all of our parents.
"What could be keeping him…"
My voice trailed off at the end.
I started trembling.
The room went silent.
I heard my mother scream, or maybe it was me. I didn't know.
Max had been shoved into the room with a seraph blade skimming his throat.
Stood behind him was Clary, holding the blade tightly.
"Does this little one belong to any of you?"
The sarcasm in her voice seemed to mock all of our fear.
As Clary spoke her eyes blurred into an infinite black.
Jocelyn had entered the far side of the room.
"Clarissa"
The whole room was staring at Clary and stunned into silence.
Hope you all enjoyed this, sorry for the cliff-hanger !
Review and let me know what you think.
Next chapter will be up today.
