The alarm broke the silence in the loft, jolting Amy from sleep. Not quite awake, she had no idea where she was until Ty shifted beside her and groaned in his sleep. She remembered crawling in bed with him, his warmth, his scent, his embrace. In his arms, her insecurities faded. She smiled, watched him slumber, wanting to freeze time.
"Hey Horsey Girl, don't we have a race today?" Ty said not even opening his eyes.
"Hey. Don't remind me." She grimaced.
He groaned again as he stretched and sat up. "Argh. What time is it?" Amy looked at his shirtless chest, strong and broad. Wanting to curl up to his chest, stay in bed, forget about the race.
She resigned, she exhaled. "Probably time to get moving, I guess. I have go to the ranch house and get a shower."
He smirked. "Good luck with that. Hope you can sneak into the house without waking Jack. He'll have a cow if he finds out you stayed here." He laughed.
She nodded, not returning his sense of humor. "Let me worry with Grandpa." She said. "Wanna ride to the track together?"
"No. I need to meet up with Dr. Jackson to go over the Vet Check plan. But, I will see you later this morning."
"Oh...Ok." sighing, she got out of bed, headed toward the stairs.
"Hey. Wait!" Ty jumped out of bed, grabbing her hand, turned her around to face him. He looked directly into her eyes. "Amy. Hey. Don't worry. You are going to do great today. You've worked hard, now have some fun. Remember, you are Amy Fleming, Miracle Girl and you are amazing!" then he hugged her tightly. "I am proud of you."
She shrugged. Then a small smile formed on her lips. "Ty...you know me better than anyone. Thank you. I needed to hear that." She paused. "The hug was nice too." She broke into a big smile. Ty watched her turn and leave.
He opened the wooden loft door and yelled after her, "See you soon, horsey girl!" He could hearing her laughing as she headed to the ranch house.
Ty met up Dr. Stuart Jackson at the track's Vet Office. "Nice to meet you, Ty. Thanks for filling in today."
"Likewise Dr. Jackson. More than happy to be here. What's on tap for the day?"
"Stuart, please. Well, we have to do a bunch of vet checks, of course. Four rounds of checks for each horse: stable walk, vitals, walkover, and post race. 3 races, 17 horses, its gonna be a long day."
"I'm ready. Tell me about each round."
"First, here are your Track Vet jacket and badge. You have to wear them all day." He pointed to the bags. "Let's grab the bags, load up the side by side and head out to the stables. I will explain as we drive."
Driving, Stuart began. "On Race Day, we start with the Stable Walk. Obviously we don't walk, too much stuff to carry. Anyhow, we check each horse in their stable for heat, lumps and gait irregularities. We look for signs of illness, injury or lameness."
"What happens if we find something?"
"Well, we can do more extensive exams in or out of the stable, order films or labs, whatever. We decide if a horse runs or not. Or what I call "fit for race" status, yes or no. If during any of our vets checks in any rounds, we deem the horse's "fit for race" status is No, the horse is scratched from the race. Period."
"Bet the owners don't like us."
"Depends. Owners, who see the long term value of their horse and racing, want us to be thorough, to protect their investment. Owners, who are only focused on the current race, are often only interested in a Yes "fit for race" status. We'll see both ends of the spectrum, and everything in between."
Ty nodded.
"The first race is at 1:00 pm. We need to be done with Stable Walk by 10:00 am so we can have a quick break and start Vitals. That essentially gives us 17 or so minutes with each horse including walking time."
"Wow. That doesn't give us much time."
"No. That's why we pre-check all horses the day before the race and assess baseline race fitness. We approach each stable with a Yes "fit for race" status. If we see a negative change from yesterday or the last exam, then we may change the status and scratch the horse from a race."
"You pre-checked all the horses?"
Stuart continued. "Yes. So it was a late night last night. Truthfully, yesterday was the first time I have examined most of these horses. So, we have to base the final "fit for race" status on only a 4 data points taken in just two days, Pre-Race, Stable Walk, Vitals, and Walkout."
"Are you comfortable with that?"
"It's not ideal. But, it is an independent, objective process. We can't expect the objectivity or independence from the horse's owner, trainer or personal vet, too much at stake. We are paid by the track in conjunction with the racing commission to be objective and thorough, the allotted time and staff. And, neither want the bad press that comes with horse injury or death. So, they tend to stand by our ruling."
Stuart continued, "There are three races today. So we will start each round with the stabled horses slated to run in the first race. That gives us more time between Stable Walk, Vitals and Walkover checks for issues to surface."
"Makes sense." Ty said.
The first stable housed a striking, blue black gelding, Spiritual Being. Stuart greeted the horse first, then shook the owners hand, introduced Ty, and explained the process. That order was repeated in every stable.
23 minutes later, Spiritual was found to be fit to race. They moved onto the next stable. "One down, 16 to go. We need to speed it up. Ty, please start the checks while I explain the process to the owner, okay?"
"Okay. But you'll verify, right?"
"Yes, and you'll document while I verify." Stuart paused, "Ty, the most important part of the exam is greeting the horse. If the horse is in pain, is dehydrated, is over anxious, is inappropriately medicated, or having some other issue, you will know by the horse's reaction to your greeting."
"So listen to the horse." Ty said.
"Exactly Ty. Horses are intelligent creatures and express themselves many ways. Listen to them."
Stuart and Ty quickly formed a good, working team, each respecting the other's experience, knowledge and opinion. Ty appreciated Stuart's easy manner with the horses and owners alike. He greeted both by name, with a friendly tone, and a hand shake or pet, which kept the atmosphere in the stable relaxed. Stuart introduced Ty as his partner which gave Ty confidence and authority to voice his findings.
Stuart went on to explain. "The Vitals check usually occurs within an hour of the race. Measurements such as respiration, blood pressure, drug screens, temperature, pulse, heart rate, weight, and such were taken."
"Last check before the race is Walkover. As horses walked from their stable to the paddock, we will watch the horses' gait, demeanor, and other characteristics. It's our last chance to spot sometime."
Stuart then talked about the last check. "The Post Race check is the most telling of how well we did in our previous checks. If a horse turns up lame, we need to check back to see what was missed, if any thing. Anyhow, Post Race checks are augmented by the horses personal vets and trainers."
Stuart and Ty had a long morning of checks before them.
Amy made her way to Sage's stable by 5 am. She dressed in her regular Fairfield trainer uniform but did her hair in a loose French braid, painted her nails and put on a bit of make-up. She always looked naturally pretty but this morning she looked polished and beautiful.
Sage excitedly greeted her with a loud snort and shook her head, immediately putting Amy in a better mood. "Well, hey Sweet Sage! How's my girl?"
Sage, still muzzled, nodded enthusiastically and reached towards her. "Let's take off this muzzle thing and get you a good breakfast ." Amy started preparing her breakfast.
Andy emerged from the adjoining groom room, looking sleepy. "Hey Amy. Wow! Looks like you slept well last night! How's it going?"
"I'm good. You have a rough night?"
"Well, the accommodations weren't that great."
"But, the company was awesome!" Maddie laughed as she walked up to Andy and put her arms around his waist.
Amy smiled. "Well! I am happy for you both!" She stepped next to Maddie and whispered in her ear, "Ah, Maddie, you have a bit of Timothy hay in your hair!!"
Maddie laughed. "That was purposeful, Amy. Hay hair is my fashion statement for the race today. I didn't have a nice hat!" She was clearly in a good mood.
Andy kissed Maddie's forehead. "I think you, Maddie, look perfect."
Andy then said to Amy who had the schedule in her hands "Okay, captain, what's on tap?"
"Well, first Sage has her power breakfast and water. Then a slow track jog, ice bath, groom, rest and then Vet Check. Not exactly sure what time the Vet Check happens, but likely before 9. Our goal is to keep our Old Sweet Sage rested, calm and happy."
"Where's Ty? I was expecting to see him here." Maddie inquired.
"Isn't Ty working with track vet?" Said Andy.
"Yep. Dr. Stuart Jackson. Do you know him?"
"I don't know him personally, but he does teach a UCalgary course on Racetrack Vets. Think he covers horses and dogs. Anyhow, I hear he's a very teacher."
"Wow. What a great experience for Ty!" Added Maddie.
Sage's morning followed Amy's schedule to almost to a T. She had a good jog, ice bath and was groomed well. She was the epitome of a champion racehorse, her coat gleamed, her tail and mane smooth and she stood very proud, even as she rested standing.
Amy, on the other hand, was a bit antsy. It was well after 9 and she still hadn't seen Ty. She was beginning to doubt her abilities, per usual. She needed Ty's support and reassurances. And, while Andy and Maddie kept her company, they didn't substitute for Ty.
Hearing a familiar laugh, Amy looked up and saw Lisa. She was dressed beautifully, of course, in a tailored silk linen navy dress and wore a ivory wide-brimmed hat with a navy ribbon. She was holding Grandpa's arm while leading a small group of people. Amy immediately brightened and grinned widely. "Here comes Lisa and Grandpa!"
Jack walked up first, hugged and kissed Amy in the forehead. Amy greeted him. "I am so glad that you are here. Love you Grandpa."
"Amy, I wouldn't miss this for the world. I am so proud of you!" Amy became a bit teary despite her huge grin.
Then Lisa, smiling, walked up to her with arms out stretched for a hug and kissed her the cheek. "Hello Sweetheart. You look absolutely lovely this morning. Ready for our big day!"
"Hello Lisa. It's so wonderful to see you." Amy was truly elated to see her.
"Everyone, please meet Ms Amy Fleming. She is Old Sweet Sage's trainer, jockey and miracle worker. And, she is an incredibly talented horse woman. Remember her name, she will do great things!"
Amy blushed.
"Amy, let me introduce you. Of course, you remember my dear friend Ms. Julie Baker, Director of Canter Project. And, of course, you know Dr. Alicia Young, Department Chair of Animal Behaviors UCalgary. This Mr. Sam Ledbetter, he is the chair of Alberta's Horse Breeders Association."
"So, pleased you meet you all." Amy added "Please also meet my friends Andy and Maddie. They are both students in UCalgary Vet School."
As the group continued to talk and laugh, a woman wearing a press tag walked up and asked for photographs. She was just finishing when Stuart and Ty approached the group. Amy asked that everyone but Lisa step away so that the Vet Check could be conducted.
Per routine, the Vet Team greeted Sage first. The horse recognized Ty and greeted him with a neigh and a nuzzle. Stuart shook hands with Lisa and Amy and introduced Ty to them. Both laughed as the women opted to hug Ty instead of shake his hand. Ty kissed their cheeks in return.
"So Ty. I am going to assume that you know these lovely ladies?" Stuart asked.
"That would be a correct assumption." Ty grinned, "Amy and Lisa are the most wonderful and special women in my life."
"Lucky you!" Stuart added, "Lisa and Amy. I wanted thank both of you for allowing Ty to work with me instead of celebrating with you on this grand day. Ty has been a godsend. He's smart, experienced, very knowledgable in horses and veterinary practice. He will make an excellent Vet and surgeon. I have been fortunate to have him by my side today."
Ty grinned as he lowered his head. He still had trouble with accepting compliments.
"Ty is pretty incredible. We are so proud of him." Amy exclaimed, she was really, so very pleased for him. She actually forgot about her own insecurities.
Sage was deemed Yes, "fit for race" status. As Stuart and Ty were departing for their last stable check, Amy grabbed Ty's hand, pulled him back and whispered in his ear. "I am so very proud of you." She kissed him lightly on the lips, surprising both of them.
When Amy and Ty separated, Amy to focus on Sage and Ty to focus on the last stable horse, both were smiling and floating on a cloud.
As Lightening Dexter was the last Stable Walk check that morning, Tim was already angry when Stuart and Ty approached his stable. To make matters worse, Tim assumed that Ty was trying to get Dexter scratched. "Janice, look at that. Ty is coming to do Amy's bidding. Damn them!"
Per routine, Dexter was greeted first. Dexter recognizing Ty, neighed and tried to nuzzle his neck, which made Ty laugh. This angered Tim further who walked up to Ty and poked him in the chest. "Who do you think you are? And, how dare you touch my horse without my permission."
Stuart stepped up and introduced himself. "Mr. Fleming, I am Dr. Stuart Jackson, this track's Veterinarian. Mr. Borden is my partner."
He cleared his throat. "If you choose to continue to harass either Mr. Borden or myself or if you choose to deny us access to evaluate your horse, your horse will be scratched from the race. Further, you, your staff and your horse will be forcibly removed from this track. Do you understand?"
Tim stepped back. "Uh, what's he doing here?"
Stuart ignore him. "Mr. Fleming, are you granting us access to evaluate your horse? Yes or No?"
Tim took a deep breath, "Yes."
"Ty, go ahead and start the check while I explain the process to Mr. Fleming."
"Come on. He's not even a Vet. He's just a ranch hand."
"Mr. Fleming your horse has been scratched." Stuart began to call security to evict Tim.
"Wait. Wait. I was just kidding. Ty and I are old buddies. He dates my daughter. Or did. Right Ty? Come on, let's shake hands!" He tried to shake Ty hand.
Stuart looked at Ty. "Ty, is this true?
Ty nodded. "I do know Mr. Fleming. He is Amy Fleming's father."
"Mr Fleming. You are fortunate that Ty knows you. We will do the evaluation, a comprehensive one outside of the stable and possibly with films and drug screens."
After completing the comprehensive evaluation, with films and drug screens, Stuart deemed Dexter Yes, fit to race. He issued a strongly worded verbal and written warning to Tim.
'Any anger or inappropriate behavior exhibited by Tim Fleming or his team would result in scratch for Lightening Dexter from today's race and a lifetime ban for Tim and his team at the track as a participant or spectator."
Handing the warning to Tim, Stuart and Ty walked away. "See you at the Vital check."
It was an absolutely gorgeous day for racing. The sky was a bright endless blue with a high sun but a cool breeze. None of the horses were scratched that day except for one horse who refused to walk over to the paddock. The crowd was in a charitable mood, or at least a betting mood, as the intake at the windows was higher than usual.
With first two races over, the seven horses running in the third and final race were assembled in the paddock. As Sage drew position card 3 and Dexter drew position card 4, they would be in the paddock stalls and starting gates next to each other. Amy and Andy readied Sage's saddle and reins in their stall whereas Tim and Janice did the same for Dexter. The two horses drew a cheering crowd in the paddock viewing area including Lisa, Jack, Lou, Peter, Mallory, Scout, Soraya, Ashley, Caleb, Sara, James, Steve, and Maddie. Ty was with Stuart on the track at the starting gate to monitor the horse loading and the race.
As the trumpeter played the notes to First Call, the seven horses lined up to parade in front of the grand stands, the crowd roared. One by one, the jockeys mounted their horses as their names were called and joined the procession.
"Number 3 is Old Sweet Sage owned by Lisa Stillman and Fairfield Stables, trained and ridden by newcomer Amy Fleming." the announcer called. Amy, dressed in Fairfield blue and green silks, mounted Sage easily with a leg up from Andy. "Good riding Amy" he said.
She smiled and waved to the crowd while Sage did what looked like a 4 or 5 step dance. Both delighted the crowd.
"Number 4 is Lightning Dexter owned by Tim Fleming and Big River Ranch Racing Stables, trained and ridden by Janice Smith." Janice mounted Dexter and joined the procession behind Amy without acknowledging the crowd. The other three horses and jockeys followed suit.
After the slow parade, the horse filed back to the starting gate. One by one, the horses and jockeys loaded Into their assigned gate with announcer blaring their names.
Situated on Sage, she pat her neck, "Sage, you are a good girl. Show them how a lady races!" Amy laughed. Then turned to Janice and said. "Have a good run".
Janice responded, "Thanks. And, you as well."
A starter gun sounded, then "They are off!"
