Lexie was 39 weeks pregnant when Meredith and Derek brought Zola home for the first time. Her adoption had been jeopardized when Meredith had been fired after interfering in Derek's Alzheimer's trial, but she had gotten her job back and Zola's adoption had gone smoothly after Richard had taken responsibility for Meredith's actions. Things were still tense between Meredith and Derek, but having Zola around helped.

Lexie was excited to have another niece. She loved playing with Zola, and she hoped that her little boy would get along with his cousin. She could already imagine how adorable the two of them playing together would be.

She heard the doorbell ring. "I've got it!" She yelled to her sister and brother in law, who were attempting to feed Zola peas for the first time.

Opening the door, her eyes narrowed. Callie was standing there with Sofia. "What do you want?" Lexie asked, unable to care how rude she sounded.

"I um, I was just bringing Sofia by for a play date with Zola. You know, introduce them to each other."

"In the kitchen." Lexie stated flatly, letting Callie in.

"Thanks. You look good, by the way. Only a week to go right?" Callie asked hesitantly, shifting Sofia in her arms.

"Yup."

"Well, uh, congrats." Callie said awkwardly, before carrying Sofia into the kitchen to see Zola.

Lexie made her way slowly up the stairs to her room. She was already tired, and it was only eleven in the morning. Just one week until her son was born, and her excitement was almost overwhelming.

Down in the kitchen, Callie received a page. "I'm gonna have to run guys, incoming trauma in need of an ortho consult. Mark will pick her up at two if that's okay with you guys?"

"Sure." Meredith replied, smiling at the two girls who were sharing mashed bananas. "We can handle both of them. Besides, I can already tell that they are going to be friends, so this should be fun."

When Mark arrived at Meredith's house that afternoon to retrieve his daughter, Derek was waiting for him on the porch swing out front. "They're both asleep right now, and since I know that you don't really have anywhere you have to be, you and I are going to have a conversation." Derek said, motioning to the empty space next to him. "Oh, and just so you know, Meredith is fully aware of what I'm doing right now, so if you try to walk away, you will have to face her instead. And believe me, your chances of surviving her wrath are a lot less than your chance of surviving mine, so I suggest you sit your stupid ass down and listen to what I have to say."

Mark sighed. "Derek, if this is about Lexie..."

"Stop. Don't say anything else until I'm finished." Derek took a deep breath. "What the actual hell is wrong with you? Are you really that stupid? Did you really think that accusing Lexie of sleeping with Alex was even remotely a good idea? You've been nothing but terrible to her throughout her entire pregnancy, and then you still have the audacity to tell her you love her? To ask her to forgive you, or let you make up for all of your mistakes? Do you not realize just how lucky you are? Lexie is so in love with you that she was willing to change the entire plan she had for her life for you. And you can't even compromise on the smallest things! Do you know how many nights Meredith and I have had to stay up consoling her because the combination of hormones and heartbreak would cause her to cry until she nearly passed out from dehydration? She has been through hell, and you are the reason for it. You never even went to any of her ultrasounds! Even I went to one when Meredith was in surgery and unable to go! It has been up to us to make sure that she isn't doing this alone, because you haven't been here. And don't you dare try to claim that she pushed you away, because this is your kid Mark. The woman you claim is the love of your life is having your kid, and you didn't even TRY to fight for her. Whether she pushed you away or not, you should have manned up and fought for her and your son the moment you found out that she was pregnant. But you didn't. Instead, you focused all of your attention on Callie and Sofia, and left Lexie to go through this alone. That isn't something that someone does to the person they claim is the love of their life. It just isn't. And now, Lexie is a week away from her due date, and instead of being with her, waiting until she goes into labor, you are here to pick up Sofia before presumably heading back to your apartment and dropping her off with Callie and Arizona, and going home alone. You're an idiot, and I seriously cannot even fathom what possible explanation you have for behaving like the world's biggest douchebag."

Mark was silent, because truthfully, what Derek was saying was true. He had no explanation for his behavior. He had treated Lexie terribly. And he had essentially abandoned the love of his life.

"What do I do man?" Mark asked quietly, unable to look his best friend/brother in the eye.

"Honestly Mark? I don't know. That's something that you will have to figure out on your own."

As the two men walked through the door, they heard Meredith calling from upstairs. "Derek, tell Mark not to take Sofia home. Lexie's water just broke."
