Chapter 21: VIOLET B. A cannon goes off in the distance, signaling a tribute death. Annie? I wonder. After spending a couple of moments silent in her memory, I remember the weapon in my hand. Possibly the finest weapon I have ever made. And definitely the only weapon I have ever made. I can sneak up on someone and hit them before they realize what happened. It won't hurt a bit and I will be one step closer to returning home. Even though I hate my own thoughts right now, it is either follow them or place death wishes on me and my family. It is not only me dying that is the problem - I am okay with that. If I die, there is no one to take care of Klaus, Sunny, and Beatrice II back in District 3. After walking for about two hours, I find a big, oddly smooth cactus. I decide to rest with my back against the cool stem, in the welcome shade that the huge size provides. Waking up with the sun directly above, I realize that I dozed off for a pretty long time - probably about an hour already! Oops. Just then, when I try to remember my plan, I hear some humming. Immediately recognizing the voice as Mary P., the most sadistic of the group, I jump behind my cactus and crouch low, aiming my bow and arrow-cactus hybrid in between the branches. "Now where did she go?" Even though I can't see her, I hear the huff in her voice. "I know she was around here somewhere." I don't dare to make a noise. I don't even breathe. I've seen what Mary is capable of. Her amazing training score, second only to Mulan and tied with Black Widow. Her ruthless murders of Merida, Mulan, Ujurak. But I also remember her kindness, the tenderness in her eyes as she said goodbye to loved ones. Then, I think that I won't be seeing any of her positive traits today or ever, if I don't get a move on. Mary moves into my line of vision, still searching for me. I target her neck. Quick and painless. I pull back, ready for attack. A tear drips down my cheek. I can't believe I am doing this. Focus, Violet. Woosh. The prick flies through the air, and hits the mark with a resounding thud, then snaps. I pry my eyes open with my fingers. The cactus prick is in her shoulder. Darn it! I had always had a bad hand at target practice. Mary slowly pivots towards me, then leans down so her face is aligned with the hole in between cacti where I am hiding. Shoot! I load another 'arrow' into the spot, just in case. In response, Mary holds up her shoe. Looking closer, I see a blood-soaked dagger tip embedded into the heel of it. Memories flash through my eyes: Esme brandishing her knife high heels so similar to Mary's, Heimlich Hospital going up in flames, the library at the hospital being completely ruined, and finally, Esme's targeted throw of her high heel into the filing cabinet next to me - crash! - so many years ago. I am stunned by shock and don't even flinch when Mary drives the hilt into my left eye, leaving me drenched in gushing hot blood, and then repeatedly into my neck.
