By now it was November, and honestly, I'm surprised that I haven't seen Zach, he was supposed to attend Georgetown as well when our normal semester started in August. You'd think being in special classes we would run into each other, even when we went into D.C. or when we went to Maryland for field training missions, didn't see Zach at all.
But its been a few months and I frankly didn't want any news or any reminder of Zach. I was slightly hurt that he could forget her, but that's fine, I could forget him. Of course, my luck this week the love song from the movie became popular on the radio, the one I walked down the fake isle to. I couldn't even walk down the halls or turn on the radio in my car without hearing the lyrics.
Megan appeared next to me in the hall, interrupting my thoughts, she poked my arm until I looked up. Her face was flushed and her green eyes were bright.
"You okay?' I asked her.
"Cammie, you have got to see this." She held up her phone and said, "The movie preview, the trailer, you're totally in it."
I dropped my gaze to the screen and the trailer was paused, I tapped her phone for it to start playing. The clip was short and the narration made my heart stop, Zach's voice came through the speakers. It had been so long since I had heard him, I even knew the words his character was saying since I had been in the recording studio when he recorded them. The trailer opened with a visual of Zach's haunted eyes staring out, this voice continued through the speakers.
"Drinking, women, risks, I tried them all and nothing made be forget the pain." The camera angle widened, and behind Zach was me, dressed in a light blue sundress, my hand reaching for a car door handle. Before touching it, I looked back at Zach in the scene and gave him a sweet smile. Then an explosion lit the screen, and you knew I was gone. Zach's voice over the speaker got rough and slightly deeper, "I can't forget." The clip ended, and Zach said the final words: "It's time to give them something to remember."
I felt my breath leave my lungs, wow. That was my smile on the screen, I had cleaned that car on the set, I had done Zach's eyeliner right before they shot a scene, that was me in that clip with dirty blonde extensions in making me look like a different girl. It wasn't much screen time, but it was me.
"So what, do you want to be an actress on top of our secret life?" Megan asked me with enthusiasm.
"No, in a way my uh real world interest is architecture is still it for me on top of our secret life."
Megan squeezed my arm, "One day I'll text you a picture of a building in a big city and it will be one you designed on the side while you were busy kicking ass of some bad guys."
I guess I should mention now, I am in a sorority, we had a winter formal coming up, but despite the title, implying the weather, it was short dresses, the spring formal is long dresses. Mom had driven over to D.C. so we could go shopping for a formal dress together, Macey offered to come visit me this weekend and go shopping, even Megan, who was in the same sorority asked if we wanted to go together. But my mom never really had that typical high school prom scene with me, going to a store and picking out a dress like a normal high schooler. So I thought since I am in something normal now, it would be a sweet moment for her to go dress shopping with me while I looked for the perfect one for formal.
I held up a light, almost pastel blue dress with some glitter and stones at the top, "What do you think? I'm honestly not super into it, but I like the style of the dress."
A frown appeared on mom's face, "Baby you'll look great in anything, even a sweatshirt and jeans," then she cracked a smile, "I do agree though, I'm not a big fan of the too large stones at the top, too much going on."
I smiled again, I continued to look through the rack of dresses, Powder would be so picky with me, but the shorter the dress the better in her mind. In a way I wish I did have Macey with me, she understood what I liked and what I could pull off so well, she could probably walk in here and within three minutes find something that I would love. I'll have to send Macey some pictures to get her input, I'll have to ask Megan too, she has a good sense for style and my taste as well.
Mom suddenly looked worried and started to bite her lip, "Cammie?"
"Yeah?" I slid hangers further down the metal rack and continued looking for my size.
"Um, well, I know you don't have a date, but sometimes that doesn't mean you won't meet someone at the dance. You know about condoms, right?"
"Mom!" I stopped snorting and looked up, "I'm not sleeping with anyone." As I said the words, I wondered why I thought of sleeping with one of the guys at college wasn't really appealing to me.
"Cammie, its only that…things happen, and you don't always mean for the to and you need to be prepared. I'm sure you are already aware but as your mother I just wanted to make sure."
I continued my search for a dress through the racks, "Mom, I appreciate that you care, I really do, but I really am not going to sleep with anyone, even if I do I promise I'll be smart, but I won't be with anyone."
I eventually decided to go with a black short dress with lace long sleeves and a deep v neck with some mesh within that v neck. I had hung it in my dorm room when I got back, I sat at my desk to do some work in my room and the dress in my open closet stared back at me. The second thing I saw was an envelope mom had slipped into my bag before she left this afternoon. I got up and went to my bag to take the envelope out. I started to unseal the navy colored envelope and I knew what it was. It was an invite to the movie premiere from Dad. The embossed card said to look in the trunk of my car for a surprise. I had decided to bring to college with me my family's Audi Q5 crossover, and I left the R8 at home for dad to play around with. I opened the trunk of my car to see a big square dress box with a copy of the movie premiere invite taped to the top. Inside the box were three designer dresses wrapped in tissue paper.
I touched the delicate fabric of the white dress on top, could I even go? I mean I was fired so I guess I really can't go right? I told mom and dad what happened about sort of getting fired, so why was I still invited? I looked at the invite taped to the top of the dress box and saw dad's handwriting in blue pen on the back. "You still did all the hard work in this movie, maybe relax and be proud of that hard work. Just a thought. Hope you like your mother's dress picks, she even reached out to Macey for you! Love, Mom and Dad."
They were right, screw it, I did work hard on that film and I want to see it. I didn't have to be stuck at home or stuck in my dorm while Zach worked the red carpet like he as the only one who worked on the film. Who cared if Zach believed me or not? He was all Hollywood with a part time job as a spy only because his mother was knee deep in shit her whole life so Zach was dragged through it. Honestly, all the drama mixed with ego, actors create half their own problems.
My phone started to vibrate in my back pocket, it was Megan. I took a deep breath to try to calm down after thinking of Zach and all that drama. "Hey?" I answered.
"I found my dress, its so great! It's a deep purple with a little bit of beeding near the bodice, I'll send you a snapchat when we hang! I can't wait to show it to you when I get back to the dorm house."
"Awe! I'm so exited for you!" then I paused, "Soo uh my dad sent me an invitation to the movie premiere. I don't know if I should go because of Zach and everything that had happened." I trailed off at the end of my sentence.
"Cam, Zach is a total ass wipe, especially for being like us then not trusting you, like you have a heart of gold but his freakin loss. Plus, look at it this way, he sure as hell doesn't own the movie."
I laughed a little at her insults, "You're right…" My phone started to vibrate, I pulled it away form my face and saw mom was calling me. "Hey Megs, my mom is calling me, I'll talk to you when you get back to the dorm house?"
"Yes! I'll see you in a bit." She said as I ended the call and switched to talking to mom on the phone, she didn't drive all the way back home, I think dad was going to meet her for dinner in downtown D.C. tonight.
"Hey mom!"
"Hey Cammie! Did you see the dresses dad sent? They're gorgeous."
I nodded even though she couldn't see me through the phone, "Yeah, they are very pretty."
"Cammie, I know this isn't planned but you should join your father and I for dinner tonight."
That was pretty abrupt, "Uh…" I looked at the time, it was four in the afternoon, getting close to dinner time but all the trendy places in Downtown start to get crazy busy, especially on a Friday night. "Uh sure? You want me to just drive and meet you guys somewhere?"
"Why not? I'll send you a text with the restaurant we are going to be at. See you around five thirty?"
Something is up, something is defiantly up, mom is never abrupt with invites like this. "Yeah sure, I'll leave in a little bit to beat some of the traffic. Is it anywhere close to a metro stop or should I drive?"
"There is a metro stop not too far from the place I believe."
So, as dinner got closer I drove to a metro station, parked my car and walked in. I swiped my metro card and got onto the metro to meet my parents in the city for dinner. I got off and then walked a short way up to the restaurant that was no accumulating a line out the door. I was meeting mom and dad at a popular gastropub, City Tap House on Penn Quarter. I made my way into the crowded front area and looked around for mom who was already seated. She sent me a text saying she was in a small side room. When I walked down the mini hall way, I found it was just her sitting at the table in the side room.
"Hey! Long time no see." I joked as I sat down. "Where's dad?"
"He'll be here shortly. I just wanted to talk to you some before he got here." I knew there was something up.
"Cammie, its been a little bit now since we found dad, alive, and got him back home with us."
"Yeah?"
"Some uh… accidents happen but I honestly couldn't be more excited. I got you something!"
Mom handed me shirt size box, I opened the box and moved the blue and white tissue paper to the side, there was a small baby onesie that read "Someone at Georgetown U loves me!" and behind the onesie was a white t shirt that had blue lettering on it that read "Best Big Sister!"
"Oh my god! Mom, you're pregnant?!"
"Yes! We wanted you to have a sibling much sooner but obviously life got in the way and your father was taken from us. And you're out of the house now but your father and I are still pretty young, we figured why not? We are still young and healthy enough so… surprise!"
"Oh my god!" I was so surprised; I was so excited for mom though. She looked so ecstatic and happy, especially since this time she'll have dad's help, unlike me he was ripped away from us and she raised me all on her own. "Ah! I'm so excited for you guys!"
