"Do you remember Clem? Just like last time. Stay close and don't panic," said Lee, as he finished adding walker blood and guts to himself and clementine.
"I try not to remember those days. I got it," she said, as they stepped off the warehouse, and entered the horde. The smell reminded Clem garbage, but 10 times worse. She was holding her pistol in her hand as Lee had his arm around her, keeping her close.
The remaining members of Clay's group were on the roof, shooting the incoming walkers, but it seemed as if they were endless. They just kept coming.
A bullet hit a walker just mere inches from her, but the darkness helped them blend in, which she didn't know was a good or bad thing.
Lee saw Mika in the distance, way ahead of them. She was easily recognizable from her hair which she always had in a tail.
"This is fucking crazy!" said Omid, who was a few feet away from the pair.
"Shut up!" hissed Clem, not wanting to get the walkers attention.
"Hey, it's not-" a bullet hit him in the lower torso, causing him to let out a yell of pain, as he fell to the ground.
"Godamnit!" Lee didn't know what to do.
"Omid, No!" Christa pulled out a cleaver as she slashed her way to him, drawing the attention of the dead. It happened too fast, as they were enveloped by the walkers. All that could be heard were yells of pain and terror.
"N... N. No..."Clem said softly. She had just seen her friends get eaten alive.
"Cmon, Clem, we're almost there," they kept going their path until they reached the woods, where they saw Rosie sitting on the edge of a log.
"Lee? Thank God, I get separated from the rest, what happened back there? I heard yelling."
"It was Omid and Christa. They didn't make it, but we are," he said as he pulled her up to her feet as they continued their path north away from the horde.
They were walking for a good 25 minutes until they reached the park, and were reunited with the rest.
" Glad you made it pal, I thought you were toast," said Kenny as he patted him on the back.
Lee took a deep breath as he cleaned himself.
"Some of us didn't. Omid and Christa, they got cought by the walkers,"
Kenny's eyes went wide.
"God fucking damnit," he exclaimed as he threw his rifle to the ground.
"There was nothing we could do, he got shot by the guards, and he just went down." commented Clem.
"This place isn't safe at all, we need to find shelter. It's getting cold too," said Mika as she rubbed her arms.
"There's a few buildings around the area. We can go check them out, see which one is safe enough," said Mike.
Kate reached for one of the pistols they managed to take from the camp.
"There's quite a few actually. We can separate, it'll be quicker."
"Rosie's baby is due any day now. We gotta find it soon," added Jaylan.
"I got the one east. I'll be back," said Jane, as she took off without any reaction.
"I'll go check the museum. Anyone want to come with?" said Derrick. He avoided the horde a few days earlier and had scoped out the park. Quite a smart move.
"I'll go. We might find something that'll help," Mika tied the laces of her boots, as she and Derrick went down a old path east.
"Hey Lee, I'm guessin' you and I can hold down the fort, make sure we don't get the jump?" suggested Bonnie.
"It's the least we can do."
Clem headed over to where Rosie was sitting. Her stomach had certainly increased in size from the last few weeks.
"I don't know how I'm gonna do it," she whimpered.
"Do what?"
"Have this baby. Zack was always here to help me whenever I felt down, but... He's gone... I don't have anyone else left." she began to cry.
"You have us!" said Clem, as she tried to smile, as she pointed to the rest of the group, the ones that were there.
"I mean, we're not perfect, but we have each other, to protect each other. That's what a group is for."
"Tell me something Clementine. Out of all these people, who is from your original group from when this started?"
Clem took a deep breath. From when the walkers first appeared, the only members alive are her, Lee and Kenny. She remembered they kicked Lilly out when she killed Carley, but that was 2 years ago, and she doubted she was alive.
Then there was Glenn, who left the motel to look for his friends in Atlanta.
"Who did you meet after?"
"Well, in Savannah, we met Mika, Derrick and some other guy. He died when Ridgedale went down,"
"A group isn't worth it anymore. Sure, it's fun when you're all around, but when they all die, the pain you go through just isn't bearable."
"We've had close calls, but Mika is one of the strongest people I know. She'll be around for A while," said Clem, hopeful. Out all the members, she felt more comfortable with Mika, for some reason, not counting Lee.
"And when she isn't around? You just gotta make sure if things go south, you don't go down either," Rosie said, as she began to feel the baby move around even more.
Meanwhile, Bonnie and Lee were in the front of the park holding watch.
"You think the walkers got in?" she asked.
"I don't know. They were alot, and clays people were holding out until the end. Let's just hope they don't come up this way," he said, he was able to see his own breath, which meant it was starting to get colder.
"I'm starting to think being up north isn't a good idea. We'll probably freeze to death then anything else," said Lee.
"Where else do you plan on goin'?
"I don't know. We thought the coast could be the way out, but it was a death trap."
Rosie joined in on the conversation.
"Maybe we can try finding the CDC, maybe it's safe,"
Kenny came around the corner after acknowledging the loss of Omid and Christa.
"That's fucking stupid. It's been 2 years! If they were around, they would have done something by now!"
She hated to admit it, but he was right. It's been over 2 years since the walkers started, and there was no trace of any government left. The military were the first to get overrun.
"I'm going to go check out the museum," said Clem. They had left to go check it out quite a while ago.
"Stay safe and watch your guard," Said Lee, as he took a seat on a ruined structure.
It was a bit cold, but the cold breeze was stopped by the blue jacket she had on. She wasn't really fond of it, but they weren't about to go shopping for another one, so she took care of it best she could.
The dirt path to the museum was empty, except for the occasional walker she would dispatch with her knife. It was a old civil war museum. She didn't get to learn much about it school unfortunately.
She approached the building, which had its windows blown out with the glass all over the area. She saw Derrick on one side of the building while Mika was going through some boxes.
"Any luck?"
Derrick pulled out a bag from a box, but it just had plastic waste.
"There might be something behind that door, but it's locked."
Clem a eyebrow at the comment.
"Why not just knock it down. Easy."
"By the time it goes down, all that banging is gonna attract walkers, and it's over."
Mika pulled out a bunch of cans of beans and other items. She opened them with her knife.
"They're spoiled, damn." She tossed them aside. That was the last of the items from the box.
"So is this a good place for Rosie?" Clem thought it was pretty hidden from the dirt road.
"I doubt it. The only good thing is that it's off to the side," said Mika, as she inspected the area.
Derrick looked at the windows.
"Plus the windows are gone, if a storm hits, we'll be right in it,"
Clem headed over to the locked door. She tried to open it, but to no avail. She saw a shutter door right next to it. She pulled it up with all her strength, lifting it only a few inches. She had a idea.
"This thing opens. Pull it up!" she ordered Derrick, and he and Mika pulled it up, as it got stuck halfway through. Derrick tried to unlock the door from the inside but it was too far.
"You can fit through there," he added.
"And I'm not about to go in there. I don't know why you all want me to everything, it's gonna get me killed!" she replied.
"Fine." He sighed, as he put a old metal pole under it and jumped inside the room.
"What do you see? Better be something in there," said Mika.
"There's a sealed water jug in here, it's huge. I'm gonna unlock the door." some seconds passed until he got the door unlocked, as a walker, unknowingly inside the room pounced on him.
"Shit!" he reached for a rock that was next to them as he used it to throw it off him, and he proceeded to cave his head in.
"We got the water, now let's go." he said, as he wiped some off the blood off him, still gasping for air. He grabbed the water jug as they trio made their way back to the park where the rest of the group was.
"We got some water, but that's it," he said as he put down the jug in the center.
"What about the building?" Asked Kate.
"Doesn't work. Windows are gone. Looks like it got blown up," added Mika.
"Then the only place left is where that weird girl left, and she ain't been back," said Kenny. He had his doubts about Jane.
"I'm on it." Clem said as she headed through the old pathway, the same direction Jane took.
"She seems real resourceful," said Kate, as they watched Clem disappear in the distance.
"I don't like it, but it'll do," said Lee.
"Cmon, you gotta let the girl grow. If she was younger then it'd be okay, but she's like what, 12?" added Mike.
"I don't why we left at all. We're fucking freezing our asses off here, and with a pregnant woman!" exclaimed Jaylan.
Kenny walked up to him, mere inches from his face.
"Hey, we didn't ask for you to tag along. You could've stayed behind, you can go back why you still have the chance,"
"Fuck does that mean?" Jaylan pulled out his pistol and aimed it at Kenny.
The rest of the group was shocked, as some of them pulled their gun on him.
"Don't be stupid, Jaylan. You're outnumbered here, just put down the gun." said Lee, trying to de escalate the situation.
"You fuckers ruined everything. Ruined my life, got others killed!"
"This the new world! Nothing ain't how you want it, two fucking years and you still don't get it!" exclaimed Mike, furious.
"I should have killed yall when I had the chance bu-" Derrick tackled him to the ground, causing him to fire the pistol into the air, making alot of noise.
"E... Enough!" Derrick had him in a chokehold hoping he would calm down, but he reached for his knife. Kate managed to kick it out of his reach, as he chocked him to death.
"I had no choice, I-" He was stuttering at the fact he just killed him.
"It's okay, fucker lost his mind, would have killed us all if we left him," said Kenny, as he and Mike pulled the corpse aside.
Clem could hear the gunshot from where she was.
"Shoot..." she picked up the pace, hoping nothing went wrong. The building was a 2 story one, which also featured civil war things. She climbed the stairs and saw Jane working on one of the locks.
"Everything alright?" she asked, without taking her eyes off the lock.
"Everyone thought you were taking too long, I decided to take a look,"
"It's not easy to pick one of these locks. And yes, I have thought of shooting it but it's not worth it,"
Clem looked around and saw the river, about 40 yards away. The current was visibly strong, and she saw what appeared to be a small town on the other side.
" We can head over there, it might be safer."
Jane looked up then went back to the lock.
"The crossing is about 10 miles down. It'll be dark before we make it. This'll do, I just got to get the lock," she said, as she continued trying to pick it.
After what appeared to be several minutes, the lock fell to the ground. The inside was the reception center for the building, but it seemed like a ideal place to spend the night and for the baby.
"We should go back and tell the rest,"
Jane looked at her.
"You can. I'll set everything up here. Go on,"
Clem shrugged as she made her way back to the park. She saw a couple of walkers, but ignored them. As she got closer, she saw more, and more. She began to run towards the camp, and saw that they were being boxed in by a large group of walkers.
She met up with Lee and the others as they fought off the walkers.
"Did ya find her?!" exclaimed Kenny, as he fired some rounds.
"Yeah, the place is secure, let's go!"
Kate and Mika helped Rosie walk towards the place, while the rest tried to lower the walker numbers.
Derrick reached for the water jug, as a walker reached for his leg, and sank his teeth into it.
"Damn it.." he pulled out his pistol and shot it. He tried to carry the jug, but the weight of it on his leg wouldn't let him carry it nor walk.
"Damnit!" Lee went back to help him. He grabbed the water jug as Mike helped him with his shoulder as they made their way to the building.
"When I said go get them, I didn't mean half the walkers of South Carolina!" said Jane, as the group made their way up the stairs.
"We're running low on ammo and these bastards keep coming!" said Mike, as the walkers made their way up the stairs. They closed the gate on them, but the weigh of them would eventually bring it down.
"Bring down the deck!" exclaimed Mika, as she saw that the deck was being held together on two sides with hooks.
"Are you out your mind?!" exclaimed Kenny.
"It's the only way to keep them off! There's no other choice!"
Clem looked at the hook and shot it a few times, as it came off, causing the deck to lean on one side. They went into the room, as they shot the other side, causing the deck to collapse, taking several walkers with it.
Derrick was laying against the wall, as Mika tried to tend to his bite.
"Don't. Just don't. It's over for me, Mikaela. You know that," he said in a deep, hoarse voice. The infection was quickly taking over, as he was very pale and weak.
"But... Cmon... We've known each other since elementary..." she replied, feeling sad about losing old friend.
"I saw my parents get eaten alive. It's just how the New World is now. Just... Don't let.. Me turn. That's all," he added, as his facial expressions indicated he was in pain.
Clem shed some tears. They basically saved them when they were cornered on a street in Savannah and now they couldn't save him.
" Okay. It's your wish... Let's go." Mika helped him to his feet as they went downstairs out back. Several minutes passed as they heard a single gunshot.
Mikaela came back up, her face puffy from tears. She sat back down, taking a deep breath.
"It happened too fast, I couldn't -"
"It's not your fault Lee. Walkers came in fast. Believe me, you're the least one I'd blame. You've always been there for me and Derrick, best way you could. We just gotta get through this now," she replied.
"the baby is coming," Said Rosie, as she began to push.
"Shit... Anyone know how to deliver a baby?" Asked Mike.
"Fuck it." Kenny walked up and ordered everyone to make room, as she layed on the floor getting ready for delivery.
Several minutes of agony passed, as she delivered a boy, who was silent. No crying, nothing.
Clem felt a wave of dread over her.
"Is it..." Kenny put its chest to his ear for several seconds.
"I.. I don't hear a beat, Clem.."
"Try smacking it. That's what doctors do," suggested Kate.
They did so for the next few minutes, but he wasn't responding. He was born dead, or died during the process.
"Then if he's dead, that means..." said Mike.
"He's going to turn?! Bullshit!" said Kenny, as he put the baby with Rosie, who was slipping in and out of it.
"You know how it works, Ken. You die and you come back, unless you destroy the brain," added Lee. He had never experienced anything like this before.
"This... This is just so messed up. I mean a baby?" said Bonnie, as she looked at them.
"It's wrong, but it's how it is now. I'm sorry," said Jane.
"My baby will not become one of them! Anything else, but not a walker!" exclaimed Rosie.
"We should get some sleep, we're heading out at first light tomorrow," said Kenny as he curled himself in a corner.
"Rosie needs to rest, she'll die out there if we leave tomorrow," said Kate.
"She'll die too if we wait here," he replied, not looking at her.
"We can talk about it tomorrow. It's been a rough day, we just need to rest. Please," said Mika, as she put her glasses next to her. When she knew they weren't safe she would sleep with them in her hand, but they were, at least for this night.
"Get some sleep Clem. You'll need it," Lee layed down on the rough wooden floor. Everyone was mostly asleep, except for Jane, who walked out the back door. Clem decided to follow through.
"What're you doing?" Jane was leaning against the handrailing.
"im... I'm heading out. In a few minutes.
" But... Why?"
" I've seen enough death for a lifetime. The way your bud Derrick went out was noble, but sad. I don't like that,"
"But you'll be alone. No one out there,"
"In this world, it's the best. You only have to worry about yourself, not about others, not about getting your throat slit at night. A group will just hinder you, slow you down."
"I don't believe that."
"What?"
"We've made it this far. We can make it farther, to where we want to go. You won't make it alone,"
Jane smiled.
"You got a good group Clem. You got leaders like Lee, Kenny. But they won't be around forever, you know that. Be ready for when the time comes. Your friend, Mika? She lost her friend. That's just 1% of all this," she said, as she pointed out towards the city, that could be seen in the distance.
" Good luck Clem. You're a good girl, you'll be just fine, if you follow my advice," she said, as she walked down the steps and into the woods.
They basically lost 2 people, which meant less manpower. Ridgedale ended up a bust, a dangerous place. She thought that maybe just finding a place for them to settle down would be enough, but maybe finding others would be okay, others who didn't have a dark side to them. But in the New World, anything is possible.
