Hailey woke to Drew whining quietly in his sleep. She turned to face him and ran a hand over his hair, "Shh, you're okay, you're safe."
Drew calmed down and sighed, pushing himself closer to Jay.
Hailey smiled a little until she heard a soft noise. Her eyes snapped to the pack-n-play a few feet away. She remembered what had happened just a few hours before and hurried out of the bed. Part of her thought it was a dream since it had been so late at night, but the other part of her was glad it wasn't. Seeing Jay in dad mode was one of her new favorite obsessions.
She reached down and gently lifted the baby, "Hi Daxton, good morning," she smiled and hugged him against her, "How're you? Did you sleep okay?"
Daxton yawned and rested his head on her shoulder.
Hailey smiled, "You really are the sweetest baby I've ever met." She grabbed the diaper bag and walked downstairs. "Let's see what you have to wear today," she sat on the living room floor and laid Daxton down. She looked through the diaper bag and bit her lip, "You don't have much, bud." She spotted her laptop on the coffee table and reached for it before shaking her head and looking back to the baby, "No, I can't buy you clothes. You're not even my baby."
Daxton kicked his legs and gurgled.
Hailey sighed and started undoing his pajamas, "I just hope you go to a good home. You deserve to be happy and have a family." She changed his diaper and dressed him in a solid blue onesie. She looked up at footsteps on the stairs and smiled at Jay, "Good morning."
"Good morning," Jay walked over and sat next to her on the floor, "Can't believe last night was real," he kissed the side of her head.
"I was thinking the same thing," Hailey laughed and leaned into him.
Jay chuckled and played with Daxton's feet, "What do you think of having a baby?"
Hailey smiled, "I like it. I like watching you with him."
Jay picked up the baby, "You're the one who became instantly more attractive when holding him."
Hailey blushed and shook her head, "Don't be silly."
"I'm not a liar," Jay smirked.
Hailey laughed, "Oh my god!"
"It doesn't count if I lie at work," Jay chuckled.
"Oh, sure," Hailey rolled her eyes.
Jay's smile grew and he played with Daxton, "Hailey doesn't know what she's talking about," he whispered.
Hailey laughed and gently shoved him as she stood, "I do too." She walked to the kitchen, "What do you think Drew wants for breakfast?"
"I don't know, but I'm worried about that nightmare last night," Jay replied and moved to the couch with Daxton.
"He's 7, nightmares are normal," Hailey said.
"He has autism and some sort of PTSD," Jay called back.
Hailey let out a deep breath and leaned against the counter, "Yeah," she rubbed her face.
"Hmm?" Jay asked.
"Nothing," Hailey mumbled and started making eggs.
Jay rested his head back on the couch and closed his eyes only to be pulled out of his mini nap by Drew running down the stairs.
"Mom, Dad, I had a dream you found a baby and-" he halted next to the couch and looked at Jay, "Oh," he crossed his arms.
"Not a dream?" Jay suggested.
Drew shrugged and sat on the couch, "Where's Mom?"
"Making breakfast," Jay said and nodded toward the kitchen.
Drew hurried in there, "Good morning."
Hailey turned from the stove with a smile, "Good morning."
Drew's face fell, "You're making eggs?"
Hailey glanced back at her pan, "Yeah."
Drew sat on the ground and put his head in his knees.
"What?" Hailey knelt next to him.
"I hate eggs," Drew mumbled.
"Oh…oh," Hailey's eyes widened as she remembered, "Drew, I am so sorry, I'll make you something else."
"It's fine, you can forget about me," Drew said.
"Hey, no," Hailey pulled Drew closer to her, "I can never forget you."
"You bought a baby," Drew mumbled.
Hailey glanced up to see Jay holding Daxton over his head, "We didn't buy a baby, Drew. We're helping him out."
Drew looked up at her, "Why?"
"Because his parents died last night," Hailey said softly.
Drew's eyes widened, "What?"
Hailey sighed and ran a hand through her hair, "Yeah, his parents are gone, so we needed to give him a home last night. He needs people to take care of him."
Drew looked behind him, "And it's just for today, right?"
Hailey nodded, "Just today. Grace is going to come get him tonight."
Drew slowly stood, "Babies are kind of fun."
Hailey smiled, "How about you go play with him while I finish breakfast?"
"Do I still have to eat eggs?" Drew asked.
Hailey laughed and shook her head while standing, "No, I'll make you something else."
Drew smiled and walked back to the couch.
Jay looked at him and cradled the baby in his arms, "Hey, bud."
Drew sat next to him, "Can I hold him?"
Jay smiled and nodded, "Yes, you definitely can." He gently placed Daxton in Drew's arms, "You like babies, don't you?"
Drew nodded and gently squeezed Daxton, "Sorry I hated you."
Jay raised his eyebrows, "What are you talking about?"
"I thought he was trying to replace me, but Mom said that's not true," Drew shrugged.
Jay rubbed his face, "Yeah, that's definitely not true."
Daxton whined in Drew's arms, so he looked up at Jay, "You need to feed him."
"How do you know?" Jay set his hand on Daxton's stomach.
"Cause it's breakfast time," Drew said, "Duh."
Jay blushed and took the baby back, "I guess, yeah."
Drew went to look through the diaper bag, "Does he only drink food? Where's the baby food?"
"There's no baby food, he's too small still, he just drinks out of the bottle," Jay pointed to the formula, "Bring that to Mom, she can start it for us."
Drew looked at it, "Looks gross."
Jay laughed, "Yeah, it doesn't smell great either, but oh well. We don't have to drink it, right?"
"Thank goodness," Drew said and walked into the kitchen.
After breakfast, Drew introduced Daxton to his stuffed animals and offered to read him a book. He knew most of the words, but a few messed him up and he needed Hailey to help, so there they sat on his bedroom floor – Drew in Hailey's lap and Daxton in Jay's.
As Drew read, Jay couldn't help but picture his life like this in a year or so. He knew Drew would still be there, but maybe Hailey could have a baby by then or they could adopt one. He didn't care. He just knew they needed to have a bigger family. They deserved to have a family.
Right next to him, Hailey was trying to avoid having the same thoughts. She loved the way Daxton just fit in Jay's lap and how he felt so perfect on her chest as she fell asleep last night. It scared her though. Drew needed her full attention right now and she was terrified they'd do something accidentally to hurt him.
Drew finished reading the book and set it down, "Did you like that Daxton?"
Jay smiled and bounced Daxton in his lap, "I think he did."
Drew laughed, "Babies are fun."
Hailey reached out and tickled Daxton's stomach, "Careful, Jay. He ate a little bit ago."
"He's fine," Jay turned Daxton and held him up, "You're good, right? Are you happy?"
Drew crawled out of Hailey's lap and looked at Daxton's face, "Do you think he misses his mom and dad?"
Hailey smiled sadly, "He probably does," she rubbed Drew's back, "They cared about him."
"My parents didn't care about me," Drew said quietly and poked Daxton's nose, "But I think I'm forgetting them, so it's okay."
Jay made eye contact with Hailey and took a deep breath, "Want to talk about it?"
Drew glanced at him, "About forgetting?"
Jay shrugged, "Whatever you'd like," he tilted Daxton back in his arms and cradled him in his lap.
Drew bit his lip and rubbed his arm, "I don't know. It gave me a really bad dream last night."
Hailey nodded, "You were really upset."
"Sometimes I can't find you in my dreams, like last night," Drew whispered, staring at Daxton.
"It's hard to remember what's real and fake, isn't it?" Jay asked quietly.
Drew nodded and scratched his arm.
Hailey set a hand on his arm and shook her head.
Drew blinked and looked at her, "Sorry."
"Don't be," Hailey said softly, "Do you know where your stress ball from Dr. Charles is?"
Drew nodded and walked to his bed. He pulled the ball out from under his pillow and squeezed it tightly.
"Good job," Jay smiled.
Drew smiled back and returned to his spot on the carpet between them. He played with the ball and hummed softly.
Daxton yawned in Jay's arms.
"Big yawn," Hailey whispered with a smile.
Jay chuckled and looked at her, "Moms say that."
"She is a mom," Drew said.
Jay's smile widened and he nodded, "Yeah, she is."
Hailey blushed and kissed the top of Drew's head.
Drew squeezed his stress ball, but he still looked happy and not as tense as a few minutes before.
"Are you excited for swim lessons?" Jay asked Drew.
Drew shrugged, "I don't know. Why can't you guys teach me again?"
"Because these people will be much better at teaching than us," Hailey said, "And you'll be able to make friends."
Drew groaned quietly and tipped his head back.
Jay bit his lip, "Drew?"
He sighed and looked at Jay, "I know, I know, I need friends."
Jay nodded slowly, "Yes, but remember, we're not doing this to punish you."
"I know," Drew mumbled and gripped his ball tightly.
Hailey smiled sadly, "We care about you."
Drew laid back on the carpet, "I know."
Jay chuckled at him, "Then what are you thinking right now?"
"That life is hard," Drew sighed.
Hailey laughed and squeezed his free hand, "Yes, it is."
Jay looked down at Daxton and smiled. He carefully set the baby on Drew's stomach.
"Hey!" Drew laughed, "What're you doing?"
"He wants to help you feel better," Jay said.
Drew rubbed Daxton's head, "He'd be a good brother."
"Oh really?" Hailey smirked, "You were pretty upset with him this morning."
"It was a misunderstanding," Drew shook his head.
Hailey laughed, "Gotcha."
"So you want a brother?" Jay asked, a smile tugging at his mouth.
"Eh," Drew sat up carefully and held onto Daxton, "Maybe. I like how it's just us right now."
Hailey nodded, "And that's okay."
"Did you buy me yet?" Drew asked.
"Buy you?" Jay repeated.
Drew nodded, "Yeah. I want you to buy me."
"Sweetheart, you can't buy people," Hailey said softly.
Drew sighed, "Yes you can. I've learned about it from other kids. Foster kids get bought and then they're not foster kids. You go see a judge and the judge makes sure you're with good people and then those people buy you."
"Oh!" Jay exclaimed, "Adoption."
Drew nodded quickly, "Yeah! I want you to adopt me."
Hailey's eyes widened and she could feel her heart beat faster. She tried talking, but nothing came out.
Jay had a similar reaction. He felt like a bucket of cold water was just dumped over him and he was frozen in his spot.
Neither adult was upset by the statement, but shocked. They had said since the beginning that they wanted to adopt Drew, but hearing him say it out loud made it a new level of real.
Drew looked between them. He bit his lip and squeezed his stress ball tightly, "Is that okay?"
Jay nodded and swallowed. He still couldn't talk, so he simply hugged Drew and Daxton against him, reaching out to pull Hailey close as well.
Hailey breathed, "Oh my god," in Jay's ear and closed her eyes against the tears she felt quickly building.
Drew laughed softly, "Dad, I can feel your heart on my face."
Jay weakly chuckled and looked down at him, "You can?"
Drew nodded, "It's really fast."
Jay smiled a little, "I…I'm really happy right now."
"Did I make you happy?" Drew asked.
Jay laughed, "You made me very happy."
Drew turned and pulled at Hailey's shirt, "What about you?"
Hailey wiped her eyes and looked down at him, "I'm very happy too. Thank you."
"Good," Drew said with a smile, "So when can it happen?"
"Um," Jay blew out his breath, "We'll talk to Grace about it, okay?"
Drew shrugged, "Okay."
Hailey took Daxton from him, "And soon you'll have your own family too," she gently threw him up in the air a little and caught him, smiling as he laughed.
"He likes that!" Drew said and sat up on his knees to watch.
Hailey smiled, "He does!" she did it again and laughed herself at Daxton's soft giggle.
"Hey, you told me to be careful with all the motion," Jay warned with a smirk.
Hailey sighed, "I know, but one more time," she tossed Daxton up and held him close once he was back in her hands, "See?"
Jay put his hands up, "Fair."
Hailey lightly bounced Daxton on her knee, "Are you happy too? You're not going to be sick. No, you're a happy bouncy ba-" her words faltered as the baby spit up down his front and over her fingers.
"Ew!" Drew laughed and stood quickly, "That's super gross!"
Hailey blinked and breathed, "Jay."
Jay tried not to laugh, "Yeah?"
"I need a towel," Hailey whispered, "Now."
"I got it," Drew ran out of the room.
Jay smirked, "Maybe you should try taking your own advice."
Hailey glared at him, "Can you help?"
"Yeah, yeah," Jay chuckled and carefully grabbed Daxton, "Let's go clean you up, big boy." He walked out of the room and passed Drew in the hallway.
Drew quickly gave Hailey the towel, "Here you go."
"Thank you," Hailey sighed and cleaned her hands off.
"That was pretty much the definition of icky," Drew said.
Hailey laughed and nodded, "You are completely right."
Jay sat on the stairs as he watched Hailey and Drew play with Daxton on the couch. Grace was going to be at their house any minute to take Daxton to his official foster family and Jay was secretly bummed that he couldn't stay just one more night. The afternoon went by fast. They'd given Daxton a bath in the sink to try to get rid of the spit-up smell and then ate a picnic lunch in the backyard on a blanket. Grace called to say she'd be there earlier than she'd originally thought, so Hailey and Drew wanted to get in last minute playtime with the baby.
As jealous as Drew had been at the beginning of the day, he admitted a few more times that he liked having a baby around. It calmed Jay's nerves about wanting to add to their family, but was the complete opposite for Hailey and just confirmed to her that now wasn't the time.
There was a knock on the door and Jay reluctantly opened it, "Hey, come in."
Grace smiled and stepped inside, "Thank you so much." She set the baby carrier on the ground, "How'd it go?"
"Daxton puked on Mom," Drew laughed and ran over to hug Grace tightly, "Hi."
"Hi, buddy," Grace smiled and held him close.
Hailey laughed and walked over with Daxton, "Yeah, it was hilarious."
Grace laughed as well, "I bet."
Drew tugged on Jay's hand, "Ask her."
"Ask me what?" Grace asked.
Jay chuckled, "Um, well, we are all in agreement that we'd like to adopt Drew."
Grace smiled, "Really?"
"Please," Drew begged to her, "Please let them do it."
"I have no problem with it," Grace squeezed his shoulder, "But it doesn't happen overnight and will take a few months."
Drew groaned, "Just another reason that life is hard."
"Apparently that's his new saying," Hailey explained softly to Grace and rubbed Drew's back, "It's okay, we expected that. Dad and I will take care of it and we'll work super hard to make it happen, okay?"
"Fine," Drew mumbled and scratched his arm.
"Hey," Jay warned and shook his head.
Drew blushed and put his hands in his pockets.
Grace raised her eyebrows and looked between Jay and Hailey, "Wow," she whispered, "Nice job."
Hailey smiled slightly and passed her Daxton, "Here's your little friend."
"Hi," Grace smiled and hugged Daxton to her shoulder, "I found you a nice home."
Jay stared at the ground and sighed.
Hailey noticed and reached over to squeeze his arm.
Jay glanced at her and shrugged.
Hailey nodded her head the smallest amount.
"Bye," Drew went on his tiptoes to wave to Daxton, "Be good."
Hailey laughed, "I think he will be, he was very good here."
Jay nodded with a smile, "That's for sure."
"Great," Grace said while kneeling down and setting Daxton in the baby seat. She stood holding it, "I will get back to you about the necessary paperwork for this guy," she smiled at Drew, "But it's actually very similar to that packet I gave you…gosh, when even was that? A while ago."
Hailey nodded, "Thank you so much."
Grace looked at Drew, "I want you to understand though that things can come up or happen and this is not a promise, okay?"
Drew bit his lip and nodded.
"Good," Grace let out a breath, "I'm going to work very hard to make this happen by Christmas."
"Christmas?" Drew whined and sat on the steps, "Not fair."
"You'll stay here, but I'm warning you," Grace said.
"I know," Drew mumbled.
Grace nodded and looked at Hailey and Jay, "Anything else?"
Jay shook his head and passed her the diaper bag, "Thank you for trusting us with him. We had fun."
Hailey smiled, "Definitely."
"I'll keep that in mind," Grace winked and walked out.
Jay followed her with the pack-n-play to her car while Hailey turned to Drew, "How about you go spend some time outside while I get a snack for you?"
"Can I bird watch?" Drew said, already happier than the minute before.
"Of course, but stay in the yard," Hailey called out as Drew ran past her to the backyard.
Jay returned inside and closed the door, "Back to normal."
"I think we're okay with normal for a bit," Hailey said softly, but still pulled him against her, "I know you wanted to keep him a little longer, but this is for the best all around."
"I know," Jay sighed and rubbed her back, "Besides, now that Drew's going to officially a part of our family…"
Hailey nodded and set a hand on his cheek, "We need to focus on him. Once he's ours, maybe we can start a discussion on future kids. Deal?"
"Start?" Jay asked, "Why can't we have it now?"
"I-what?" Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Jay, we need to focus on Drew, you practically said it yourself."
"Yeah, but we could open conversations now and close them later," Jay argued.
Hailey shook her head, "No, I can't do this," she turned away, but Jay grabbed her hand.
"I don't want to fight," he said softly, "Please, Hailey."
She closed her eyes, "I don't want to fight either, but…we can't just expand our family from two to four in a day, Jay, we need to plan and prepare."
Jay gently turned her to face him again, "That's understandable."
"Then what's the but?" Hailey asked.
"But we were meant to do this," Jay said softly.
Hailey sighed and set her hands on his shoulders, "Yes, I will not disagree with you on that, but like we've said from the very beginning, we need to get a handle on Drew first. I want to feel confident and solid with him before I add another member to this home."
"Even a dog?" Jay asked with a slight smirk.
"Drew doesn't want a dog," Hailey smiled.
Jay shrugged, "He doesn't know. He's asked for one, but he's also glad we don't have one."
Hailey hugged Jay again, "It doesn't feel right right now to have another child, please believe me."
"I think I got caught up in the moment," Jay whispered.
"I know you did," Hailey laughed softly, "And that's okay; honestly, I did too. I loved seeing you with Daxton."
Jay chuckled, "Did it make me hot?"
"Oh," Hailey smirked, "For sure. I really wanted to show you last night, but our room was a little packed."
Jay laughed and kissed the side of her head, "Maybe tonight we can try."
Hailey nodded, "I am not opposed to that in the least."
Jay smirked and kissed her nose, "I'm looking forward to that."
A/N: I really hope this is okay and isn't too all over the place. Honestly, I had a really rough day and was struggling to find the motivation to write. As a heads up, I'm going to be out of town and won't be writing or have access to a computer to write for about a week and a half starting this coming Sunday, so that's why I kind of pushed through and wrote this chapter. I'm planning on getting at least one more chapter of this and maybe another chapter of a different story or a one-shot before then? We'll see…fingers crossed. Anyways, thank you for your reviews and kind words! I hope you liked this chapter as well :)
Also, I just went through and named all the chapters...let me know what you think!
