"Mai, do you know where this box was before you kicked it?" Naru asked. "I did not kick it I tripped on it." The girl protested. "But yes I know. I already had a look at it before." Naru got up from the floor. He then extended his hand to help his assistant. She took his hand. "Ok, let's take some boxes that were near this one." Naru lifted the box of candles.
Mai and Naru gathered the team and headed back to the base. As soon as they got back Mai and Naru started to examine the boxes they brought. The boy was trying to use his power again. "Stop it. You're not supposed to use it." Mai scolded. "It's not like I can even if I want to." Naru told her slightly irritated that he can't control it.
"So, can any of you tell us what happened?" Ayako asked annoyed. Mai and Naru made them almost run all the way back. "Ah, so you don't know either?" Madoka added as she appeared behind the miko. "Naru saw something when he touched one of the candles. We brought some of the boxes that were nearby." The brunette explained as she handed Ayako one of the boxes. "It would be nice if you could help look us through it."
She then took a box herself. Inside she found another box. This one looked fancier. It was very well decorated. Mai opened it. "Naru…" she said. The boy was however still distracted by the candles. "Ey, Naru." She said louder. She had to repeat the action three more times before she got her boss's attention. Naru looked at what his assistant was so desperately trying to show him. Inside the box was a knife. Well, it looked more like a dagger, to be honest. An extremely old one. I wouldn't be that shocking but the object had a very dark stain on it. Probably a dried fluid. And as both Mai and Naru were thinking, probably blood.
"Let me touch it." Naru blurred out. His hand was already just an inch from the box when Mai closed it with all her might. "Like hell." She then quickly got up and handed it to Lin. "Don't give him anything else either." She stated looking at her teammates the turned back to Naru. "And give back the candles." Once she succeeded in getting the item back from Naru she sat back in her spot. "So what was in the other boxes?"
Ayako huffed. "Rocks, you gave me a box full of stones." She then took one out and threw it to the girl. Mai successfully caught it. "Hey, that's not a stone. That's quartz." She stated. Naru turned sharply. 'Quartz can..'
"Why do you know that?" The miko asked astonished. "We covered it in one of my classes some time ago." The girl answered as she threw the crystal back. "You remembered something from your classes?" Monk teased her which made her pout. She crossed her arms and looked the other way. "It interested me. Did you know that quartz can store energy?"
Thanks exactly what Naru was just thinking about. "Put them together with the candles and the dagger." He ordered. "So who has the last box?"
John raised his hand. He and Masako were looking at it together. "We didn't want to interrupt your conversation but you might want to come and look at it." The ex-priest said. Upon looking into the box Naru saw a jar. Old japanese jar. But the jar itself wasn't that interesting. What was interesting, and another big surprise, were the uncountable seals on it. Around half of them torn in two still holding onto the item and some more in the box. "Well, let's see what comes next." He whispered.
The rest of the day passed by, nothing happened. The team got their dinner and headed to their rooms. Mai got ready to head to bed. She jumped onto the futon. "Masako, take the one next to me." The girl yelled making the medium head over. "Why are you so energetic?" Masako asked. "I don't know. Am I?" Mai wondered. Her friend smiled at her. "No, having a second thought, you are always like this."
"Ok, girls, that's it. I'm turning the light off. I'm tired and want to sleep." Ayako cut in. "I'm not as young as you anymore. Mai looked at her in shock? disbelief? Anyways, she was surprised. "What the hell did Bou-san tell you again? Something about being an old hag? I need to tell him to stop. Geez, Ayako you are just a few years older than us." Mai laughed and the priestess smiled softly. "It's my job that makes me feel old." She joked. "Now, I'm really turning it off."
It was time to sleep. Sleep and dream.
Mai opened her eyes as soon as she closed them. However, she wasn't in the room anymore. At least to the same one she was just a moment before. This room was also dark, but there was one source of light. Well, many of them, spread on the floor. Mai was floating right under the ceiling so had a good look at … yeah… what was that. She noticed that the source of light she saw were in fact candles, placed on the floor in a circle. Then she noticed a weird pattern on the floor that was being surrounded by those candles. She tried to focus on it and remembered it as good as she could. That's when she suddenly heard a scream. "Please! Stop!" A man was being dragged onto the pattern.
"He wasn't looking very alive." Mai remembered Naru's words. She knew what was coming next. The person pulling him took out a knife… no wrong… the dagger. Instantly a chanting started. Mai turned to see the room filled with people. No one was stopping what was about to happen. They chanted.
Mai blinked. The view changed. She was no longer floating above the people's heads. Right now she was looking that man right in the eyes. The dagger above his head. "Wait, noooo!" She screamed. Her voice different than usual. Deeper. It was too late. He swung with all his might. Mai felt the piercing pain. Her heart…it was hurting. Her vision gut blurry. Then everything went dark.
Next, her eyes snapped open. Darkness. She couldn't see a thing. But she could feel. She felt something soft under her and over her legs. She then slowly reached to her left. There she felt another person. Was she back? She reached to where she left her phone and yes, it was there. She was back. Mai turned on the flashlight and dashed to her bag pulling the first pen she found out of it, which was also the only one she had. She then started drawing the pattern she saw in her dream on her hand. Her notebook was left in the base so she had not much choice.
"Meow~" Yoru rubbed against her. He, however, did not get Mai's attention. The cat then jumped up successfully snatching the pen out of Mai's hand. "Yoru!" She yelled. But did not bother going after the cat. She was almost done anyway, this should be enough. Also, she could wake someone up.
Still a little bit sweaty from her dream Mai retreat onto her futon. Closed her eyes. Only to have them opened again. This time there was no scenery. Just pitch darkness. Another dream? But why, why did it feel so weird, so different. She turned at the sound to footsteps. Mai saw two figures approaching her. As they got closer Mai's eyes started to fill with tears. "Mom? Dad?" She whispered as now, they were just two feet away. The pair smiled brightly. "Mai, my girl. Look at you, so grown up." Her father said. A tear rolled down the girl's cheek. "Why, why are you here?" She asked. "It doesn't matter. We're are so happy to see you. Finally, the three of us are together." Her mother extended her hand. "Come with us. Stay with us a little longer."
Mai was about to reach for the hand when she noticed the vision getting hazy. Then everything quickly got dark. Next, she could feel herself being shaken. "Mai, Mai!" She heard a voice calling her. She got up. The room was still as dark as before. "What is it, Masako?" She asked sleepily. "I felt it. For the first time here. I felt a presence. It was here with us. A very dark presence."
Mai got scared at her friend's words. She slowly lay back down. "Was it so strong that it woke you up or weren't you asleep in the first place?" Mai asked grabbing her friend's hand. Masako too got back to a laying position. "I don't know. I think Yoru woke me up but I also think it was strong."
Mai smiled trying to calm the medium. "Then let's tell Naru about it in the morning. For now, let's sleep. I had a bad dream."
I love the name Yoru but my keyboard just loves to make a 'Your' out of it while I'm not looking. -_-
