A/N: Wow! I can't believe we're 23 days in and we've only had 2 songs that have been done on the show! Honestly, I listen to so much Darren Criss I was SURE that this prompt challenge was just going to be me re-writing already existing scenes because I'd get all of his Glee covers. I'm impressed this is only the second one! I also was able to come up with an original concept for this and not have to just write about the episode it was in, so points for that. Enjoy!
Song: I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You: Black Kids (as sung by Darren Criss)
Lyrics: "He's got two left feet and he bites my moves. I'm not gonna teach him how to dance… the second I do I know we're gonna be through. I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you."
Summary: Kurt comes back to Lima to visit his family… and he brings Adam with him. Can Blaine play nice knowing what happened last time Kurt was home? Obviously AU, Klaine-Centric, set in season 4- post 'I Do.' Kind of OOC for all the characters.
Rating: T- Language, Mentions of Sexual Situations… just general college stuff. Remember, at this point, Kurt's in college and Blaine is a senior in HS. When you're young you use a lot of harsh language, you can't express yourself correctly, you get jealous… it's all a part of growing up. Although they're both adults in this situation, the tension would still be there and they may not be able to express feelings to each other in great ways.
It's not like Kurt had meant for Blaine to be there… he just was. If he had gotten to choose he wouldn't have let Blaine come within 100 feet of Adam. But, if he wanted to see any of his old friends or even his own family members Blaine and Adam would have to come face-to-face. It shouldn't have been as hard as it was, Kurt told himself. If he and Blaine were truly over, if he actually loved Adam, this would just be a passing moment. He would walk Adam into a room full of New Directions faces, introduce him to his family, and Blaine would just be a passing blob, a face in the crowd. There was no reason that he and Adam would even have to talk. But, Kurt knew, things would never be that simple. So that's how he found himself sitting in a corner with Sam and Artie talking about how things in Ohio were going with Adam sneaking away to get a moment with Blaine.
"You're Blaine, right?" The older man put on his best smile as he slipped to the side of the ex-Warbler and pouring himself a drink.
Blaine simply looked up, a slight scowl on his face. "Yea?" He had been trying to avoid Adam the entire night. But, every time he tried to get Kurt alone just to talk somehow the British wonder was always right there. It left Blaine wondering if Adam was actually felt threatened by him. After all, the two weren't boyfriends if how the night of the Schuster wedding went down just a few weeks prior was any indication. "What do you need?"
"Just wanted to introduce myself. My name's Adam." The blonde man held his hand out, Blaine just starred at it.
"I know who you are."
"uh-huh." Adam brought the soda he had poured to his lips and took a long drink. "I just want to try and play nice, Blaine. For Kurt's sake. I know how important you… you were to him." The way Adam tossed the word were, his tongue rolling the word around as if Blaine was in the past, as if Kurt felt nothing for him, made the younger man feel uneasy.
"Yes, I know I'm important to him. He made that abundantly clear a few weeks ago on Valentine's Day." Two could play at this game.
Adam's eyes narrowed and he looked across the room to ensure Kurt was still engrossed in his own conversation before leaning down to whisper directly into Blaine's ear. "Look, I know you're still hot for my boyfriend. I just want to be able to get along a little bit so he doesn't feel uncomfortable. Do you think we can do that?" Blaine couldn't help but snort.
"Boyfriend?"
"You have a problem with that?"
"I just think you might want to check your expectations with your 'boyfriend,' because I really don't think he feels the same way." Blaine watched as Adam's eyes flickered between him and Kurt, a blush creeping up on his as he thought about the implications of what the younger man had said. "I'm just saying, Adam… there's things you're never going to know about him. So why not quit while you're ahead?"
"I suppose that's all the things you know?"
Blaine simply poured himself some more coke and smiled. "Something like that." Then he walked away, joining Tina by the karaoke machine to go over what song they were going to sing together before the night was over.
Safely back in New York Adam felt it was finally appropriate to broach the subject that had been on his mind the entire weekend in Lima. "What happened on Valentine's Day? The question seemed to catch Kurt off guard, his eyes widening slightly before regaining his composure.
"What do you mean? I went to that wedding for my old glee club director. We talked about that."
"But what happened, Kurt?" Adam took a step closer to his… boyfriend? A friend with benefits? Lover? Random hookup? He wasn't quite sure what they were at this point. "What happened while you were in Lima?"
"Someone said something didn't they?"
"So, something did happen?" He watched as blue eyes filled with guilt, refusing to look into Adam's own gaze. "It was Blaine wasn't it?"
"He told you."
"He thought I knew."
Kurt took a deep breath, aching to talk but not being able to find the right words to express his inner conflict. "We—we aren't—Adam…" He paused for a moment. "Adam, we aren't dating."
"I thought we were."
The look in the older man's eyes flashed Kurt back, to a memory that felt like a lifetime ago. He was suddenly there again, a junior tucked into a coffee shop, unsure of himself and where his relationship was going. "We sing flirty duets. You know my coffee order? Was I supposed to think that was nothing?" Hazel eyes met blue, each starring into a melancholy gaze that matched their own. "Wow… I really am clueless…" Kurt was snapped back to reality by the slight sniffle of the man now in front of him. He wasn't a teenager anymore, he realized suddenly. This wasn't a coffee shop in Lima where he was unknowingly falling in love. No, this was New York City—the Big Apple. He was here in his own apartment with a man who admired and liked him, who was ready to take that next step in their relationship… and Kurt couldn't do it. He couldn't shake the ghosts of Lima.
"I'm sorry…" With that Adam was gone, taking with him the last thing that had been Kurt's in New York and not 'KurtandBlaine.' Kurt ran a hand through his hair before opening his computer to the skype account that had been long since forgotten. His mouse hovered over the green circle for a few moments before he clicked. No turning back now.
"How's the boyfriend?" The screen lit up; the question almost immediate. The answer was stuck on the tip of Kurt's tongue as he stared into the darkened screen, chocolate eyes obscured by the dimmed light of the room on the screen. "Or… is he not the boyfriend?" The yes squinted and studied Kurt's face. "Okay, so he wasn't the boyfriend….. you okay?"
"Yea, Blaine. I'm okay." Kurt sighed, falling against his bed, the laptop balancing on his stomach. "I just think we need to talk."
"You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to say that."
A/N: So, this started as one idea and then just shifted into something else entirely by the end. I guess that's just how the cookie crumbles. Also, I KNOW I'm behind updating my fic Amnesia… I promise that the next chapter is coming shortly. See you next time!
