Chapter 20

The New Light (Part 1)

It was a very snowy day in Russia.

A small machine was flying about through a forest. It had eight pyramids connected to a spherical core. It looked like an inverted Rubik's Cube. It had an optic that showed an eye. It kept flying about until it spotted something buried beneath the snow. It was a body. It scanned the body. The shell came off and was being lifted through a field of light.

"Found you." It spoke.

The field expanded with great force. A white haze flowed into the body. The snow turned to flesh and clothing. Hair grew back, muscles and skin were reformed, various organs began to fill in all the gaps, and a spark was lit to ignite a soul in this empty vessel.

It was a boy.

The boy breathed in the cold air. He coughed harshly, almost as if he had not been breathing for a while. The machine floated towards the boy's face.

'After all this time. I've finally found my Chosen.' The machine thought, 'Well, better introduce myself.'

The boy had white hair and silver eyes. The boy looked at the machine that came to him.

"Uh… Hi?" The machine spoke.

The boy, upon seeing the machine, appeared… confused. He began to look around.

"Uh… you must be very confused by all of this." The machine said, "Ahem. I'm a Ghost. Actually, I'm your Ghost."

"And… me?"

"You? Well… you've been dead for some time so you might see or hear things that you may not understand once you see or hear them the first time." The Ghost said.

"Dead? Me? I…"

He looked back.

"So… do you remember anything?"

"Me? Remember what?" The boy asked.

"Oh you know, like uh… your name?"

"Name… yes… I… I do have a name." The boy said, "Misha. Yes… Misha."

"Ok Misha, Uh… what do you want to call me?" The Ghost asked.

"You? Well… I… I do not know." Misha said, "How about…"

He looked up to the sky. It was… full of stars.

"Orion…"

"Orion? Hm… I like that. Yeah… let's go with that!" The Ghost said.

A howl could be heard.

"Oh no… Grimm!" Orion said, "We aren't safe here. I need to get you out of here. Hold on!"

Orion vanished.

"Orion?"

"I'm still with you." Orion spoke.

"Then where—?"

"Look, let's just get moving." Orion said, "Oh no… they've spotted us! Run!"

He looked to see black wolves rushing towards him. He quickly rushed into the forest. He fell over. A black wolf jumped over him and landed in front of him. He turned to see two other wolves surround him.

"We're surrounded!" Orion exclaimed.

A three-sided shuriken goes straight into the head of the wolf in front of Misha. The wolf began to freeze as some kind of seemingly blue ice began to cover its body. Then…

BANG! BANG!

He turned to see the other wolves blasted by some kind of ice blast. The wolves fell apart into pieces of ice. He saw a person… no.

He saw a machine looking at him.

The machine… it looked oddly feminine and was about the same size as him. The machine girl had white-blue eyes. Her face had a mouth, but not a nose in sight. She was wearing clothing over her body. She had a cloak that covered much of her left side. She had a good over her head. She was holding a weapon of some kind. It had a handle on the side and a trigger to the back. It was as big as a grenade launcher. Floating next to the woman was some kind of fish. It had six eyes that seemed… robotic.

"Who are you?" Misha asked.

"That's none of your concern." She said, putting the gun to her back, "I'm just a drifter."

Her mouth lit up when she spoke. There was some chatter coming from a radio. She looked down to her left.

"Yes… they're right here." The girl said.

Orion appeared.

"Who do you think she's talking to?" Orion asked.

"Beats me." Misha admitted.

"Understood…" The girl said, "I'd be careful about everything in this world. There are dangers even you don't know about. Dangers that can come from just about anywhere."

"Why did you save me?" Misha asked.

"I don't have time to explain that." The girl said.

"What do you mean you don't—?"

"I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain." The girl said, "I suggest you and the Little Light find a safe place to go to."

"Uh… I'm a Ghost actually." Orion said.

The machine walked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"There's a place just to the south. Follow these coordinates and you'll find a village." The machine said, "Go there. You'll understand when you make it there."

She walked past him.

"Wait!"

He turned to her…

Only to see that she was gone.

"Huh… I got these coordinates that she gave us… it leads to the village she mentioned." Orion said.

"What was she?"

"An Exomind. Self-aware war machines built long ago by humanity." Orion said, "No one knows how they were created or even why they were made in the first place."

"And this village she spoke of?"

"Hm… yes… it's the Village of the Light."

"Village of the Light?"

"A community living near a Shard of the Gardener and a home for Risen just like you." Orion said, "Which reminds me, once we get you back to the village, there is one thing we're going to have to do."

He looked to the broken pieces of the wolves. Orion did the same.

"Can't we just stay here with the murderous wolves?"

Misha snickered and looked to Orion.

"No, Little Light."

Orion sharply turned to Misha and tilted down.

"Don't do that."

The two went south towards the coordinates.

Later…

The two kept walking until they spotted a vehicle moving in. It stopped. He noticed an emblem on it. It looked like a tricorn with an oval in the middle.

"What's that logo?"

"It belongs to the Village of the Light, which means this transport can take us there." Orion said, "Don't worry, we can trust these guys."

He decided to get in the vehicle. The vehicle began to make its way to the village. He closed his eyes and slept.

Elsewhere…

A tree with a spiraling trunk stood tall, sheltered by the Shard. Up to the top, the tree spirals outward. An aura of light moves around the tree. A man in white with a white mask stood before the Shard. He had heard the Shard of the Gardener sing a happy melody. The light surrounding the tree funneled into the hole at the top and down into the ground before taking the shape of a man wearing a cloak. The man looked to the projection.

"Yes. It has been a long time since the Guardian laid down his life to protect us all." The man said, "He truly was a soldier of the Light. A man who went by many names. The Young Wolf, Irae's End, Hero of the War, the man who avenged one of humanity's finest Risen. A mentor to the Saint of Twilight. And most of all, my dear friend."

He held up a broken helmet and a dead Ghost.

"He told me he had a son who was born with silver eyes." The man said, "On the day he died, he told me never to lose hope, that one day, someone will succeed him. Funny enough, he said that if his son gets resurrected by a Ghost, maybe he will be the next Guardian. I still believe him."

He looked at the helmet.

"And perhaps… perhaps he is the one to succeed him."
