"Mama!"
A woman with long silver hair and vibrant golden eyes turned away from her painting of a large dog howling at the moon. Her eyes narrowed playfully and her lips spread in a gentle smile as two familiar heads of black and blonde hair rushed in. Well more like one rushed and the other followed.
The blonde launched himself into the woman's arms arm buried his face in her stomach. Quickly, with reflexes that came with being a kunoichi, she caught him and put her paintbrush away.
"Naru-chan." She said in a singsong voice. "It's been a month now, you should know better than to shout and run inside."
The blonde, Naruto, just grinned sheepishly at his supposed mother. "Heh? I guess I forgot with Jack chasing me?" He said and warily looked at the child behind him.
The black haired child, now identified Jack, scowled in the most aloof manner possible. His face barely moved but his eyes said it all. He was very irritated with the blonde. "Mother," He said, his voice devoid of any emotion. "The troglodyte is pestering Kagome. May we please return him now?"
Jack held up a pot of soil and shook it ever so slightly to make his point. "Even Audrey agrees." A small pumpkin with a mouth full of seed-like razor sharp teeth popped out of the soil and nodded vigorously.
"See. We voted."
The mother shook her head and made a mental reminder to have her second eldest play with Jack. The boy needed to loosen up. "Jack, Naruto is a member of this family. And he lives here now, which means he's not a troglodyte."
"Hn."
"Hn isn't even a word, teme!"
"Hm?"
"I know you heard me!"
"Hm."
"Why you-"
"Hn."
"That's not what I was going to say and you know it!"
"Hn."
The two continued two "bicker" back and forth. The woman just watched in exasperation and awe as Naruto somehow managed to understand those monosyllabic responses. Naruto looked ready to throw down and Jack looked more bored than ever.
She completely blamed her eldest.
"Alright boys, how about I tell you a story." She interrupted them. "Then you two have to make nice."
Their reactions couldn't be anymore different, Naruto cheering and Jack sighing. Opening her arms, Jack climbed into his mother's lap and sat beside his "brother".
"Once upon a time…"
The world was divided in two.
Humans and demons.
The humans were small and uniform in shape and size yet so uniquely different. The demons were otherworldly, in beauty and power, each one wielding power no human could possess. For these demons had yokai or demonic energy. The demons saw themselves as superior but still treated the humans as equal for they understood that as one is born alone, one shall die alone. They all bled red and would one day join the Earth all the same.
But humans could not accept this. When one is faced with something they cannot have or understand, they lash out.
The peace ended when a human and demon bore a child together. A hanyou. The humans wanted this child for their power and to use as a weapon. The demons wished to nurture the child and help them embrace their demonic heritage. War broke out. The child was killed and the war became feircer as both sides blamed the other. As time went on, the reason for the war was forgotten and hanyou became the object of hate. For neither side could stand the other, such a union was met with scorn and the product a source of much hate.
The war continued for years, humans trying desperately to attain the power of demons while the demons withdrew to their own lands and hoarded their power.
Until one day, a young goddess decided that humans should have the chance at such power. She gifted the world with chakra, the energy meant for humans. But still the demons were blessed with it, their bodies more accepting to this flow of energy.
Enraged by this, the humans made a plan.
Feigning a treaty, the humans invited the demons to a grand feast. The feast lasted ten days, with food and revelry as the "peace" was ushered in. Unbeknownst to the demons, each day a child was stolen and sacrificed by the humans in the name of the goddess that gave them chakra in hopes of gaining their power. It wasn't till the tenth day, when the high lord of the demons was looking for his daughter and her playmates at the behest of their parents that was he scheme was discovered.
The lord watched in horror as the humans set forth ten bundles on a pure and lit it aflame. The humans didn't know, but demons are beings of emotion. The pain and suffering, the anger, of the children became a palpable stain in the air as their bodies burned. Their collective youkai formed a new entity, a creature a pure hatred and pain. It sucked the chakra from the humans closest to it and grew larger in size as did it's lust for revenge.
Ten tails emerged from its back and wiped the humans of the face of the earth. Only those scattered amongst the demons were spared. But they too, became victims of its wrath.
All but one.
This human lived amongst the demons and saw them as friends. He learned and studied with them. He understood that all would end one day now matter the species.
He was known as the Sage of Six Paths.
The sage was able to separate the creature into nine separate pieces and breath new life into them. Each new life took on its own form and identity.
The first and strongest was the Kurama, the nine tailed fox.
The second was Gyūki, the eight tailed bull.
Third was Chōmei, the seven tailed beetle.
Fourth was Saiken, the six tailed slug.
Fifth came Kokuō, the five tailed horse.
Sixth was Son Gokū, the four tailed monkey.
Seventh was Isobu, the three tailed turtle.
Eight was Matatabi, the two tailed cat.
Finally came Shukaku, the single tailed tanuki.
These tailed beasts learned to care for humanity under the love and guidance of the Sage. But after his passing, the each went out into the world and grew to despise humans as they were attacked for their power. The humans forgot what happened and once again sought to possess the power of demons out of greed.
The tailed beasts were captured and sealed within humans so that they may be controlled. Till this day this practice continues.
The art of creating a jinchuriki.
As time passed, the humans eventually forgot about true demons and cared only for the tailed beasts. The demon race went into hiding and decided to blend in with the humans to avoid another tragedy like the false treaty.
But still they practice their arts and wait for the day they can no longer hide and are needed by humanity.
For humans can be foolish but can demons.
It's all a matter of waiting.
Jack sat in contemplative silence as his mother finished her story. He knew his family's history but never the history of his people. He looked over at the dozing blonde and thought about what his mother said. He'd never cared much for humans, the noisy things. But what she said...
They all were the same in the end…
"Mother…" Jack said softly. "I will give the troglodyte a chance.
The boy slid out of his mother's lap and turned to leave, his pot of soil gripped firmly and in his hands. A thought struck him and he leveled his mother with an even yet curious look. "What about the mikos, mother?"
His mother's eyes tightened ever so slightly at the corners before she smiled. "That's for another time. Off to be now." She said as she adjusted her grip on Naruto.
The boy nodded and let his feet carry him out the room.
He had a lot to think about.
