Jane twists the ring sitting snugly on her finger … like a noose. She allows her eyes to shift to the documents before her. The name feels like a slap to her face—Janet Volturi.
Oh, how she hates that name! She's hated it since the day her father had begged her to marry Aro Volturi—the man buying out her father's company.
Over the years, she has wondered if it was simply her bitterness toward her father that kept her from loving Aro.
For a moment, she allows her mind to drift to the day she'd learned of her husband's numerous affairs…
She'd been shocked by her own lack of response that day. Instead of feeling dejected by his infidelity, all she had felt was rage … blinding rage. She'd told herself that her anger was directed toward her father for ruining her life.
The sudden ring of her cell phone brings her out of her reverie. Glancing at the name flashing across the screen, she grimaces.
James Bright.
She's been on the fence with him lately, wondering whether she shouldn't have forged this partnership with him. Momentarily, she regrets taking advantage of him, but shakes it off.
It's for the greater good after all.
