"Now!" Port proclaims over the loudspeaker. "The moment you've all been waiting for! The one-on-one finals!"
The crowd cheers. Standing onstage, among various other competitors, are Yang Xiao Long, Penny Polendina, Pyrrha Nikos, and Sun Wukong.
"Barty," says Port, "why don't you explain the rules?"
"Uhh, it's quite simple, Peter," says Doctor Oobleck. "Instead of a bracket system, each round of the finals will be determined at random right before the match takes place."
"Much like any good hunt, there will be no time for preparation," adds Port.
"Yes, yes," says the Doctor. "Now, let's see who our first match will be."
On the various large screens throughout the Colosseum, the fighters for the first match are being selected. The first is Mercury Black, a young man with spiky gray hair. The second is none other than Yang Xiao Long.
"Yang Xiao Long and Mercury Black!" Port announces.
Aris cheers from the audience, "Burn 'em to ashes, flamethrower!"
All the other combatants leave the stage, Yang and Mercury remaining there for the fight.
Spotlights shine on Yang and Mercury, held in the air via gravity Dust. The crowd cheers and applauds.
"You better not go easy on me," Yang taunts.
"Heh, you wish," Mercury scoffs.
The fighters raise their fists as Port starts the countdown. "Three...two...one! Fight!"
BGM: Ken Stage (Street Fighter II) - Super Smash Bros. 4
Yang's fist collides with Mercury's foot as the fight begins. Mercury jumps back and sends a kick Yang's way. The fiery fist-fighter leaps over his head and retaliates with a shot from her gauntlets. The brawlers exchange blow after blow, block after block, dodge after dodge.
Mercury jumps back again, as does Yang. The latter of the two sends a volley of fiery shotgun projectiles at Mercury, who dodges with ease. He retaliates with a jumping kick towards Yang's face. The blonde brawler blocks with her forearms.
She follows it up with a flaming fist, only to be dodged and hit with a bicycle kick from Mercury. Yang recovers and goes in for a flurry of punches, only to be blocked and knocked over with a kick to the leg.
A Street Fighter-esque brawl ensues, Yang and Mercury locked in fierce combat, fire flashing and gunfire echoing through the Colosseum. Yang knocks Mercury away before attempting to pelt him with another torrent of bullets. The gray-haired fighter backflips away, almost falling out of the arena in the process. A sort of gunshot from his heels propels him back into action, however.
Yang blocks a flurry of kicks from Mercury before being knocked away. As she recovers, Mercury lifts one of his legs and begins firing bullet after bullet, spinning in a circle all the while. Bullets begin circling the fighters as they resume their battle. It's as if they're brawling within the eye of a hurricane.
Mercury slams Yang to the ground one final time, the bullets following up his attack by slamming down into her body. A cloud of dust is kicked up, and it seems that Mercury is the victor.
BGM: Guile Stage (Street Fighter II) - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
As Mercury begins walking away and dusting off his shoulders, behind him ignites a wall of flame. Yang Xiao Long is not quite done yet.
Her eyes gleaming scarlet, Yang rushes Mercury and begins obliterating him with punch after fiery punch. Mercury is barely able to keep up.
Yang finishes him off with an uppercut and then a powerful slam to the ground, Mercury's Aura completely shattering as a result.
End BGM
A buzzer sounds as Mercury falls. "What a way to kick off the finals!" Port declares.
Yang exhales and raises a fist into the air, a smile on her face. "Yang Xiao Long is the winner!" Oobleck announces.
In the audience, Yang's teammates, team JNPR, and team AMPR all cheer joyously. "That's how it's done!" Aris exclaims. "No one can quench the flames of Yang Xiao Long!"
Down on the stage, Yang wipes her forehead as Mercury gets up. "Better luck next time, bud," she says as she walks away towards one of the exits.
Behind her, Mercury seethes, "There's not gonna be a next time, blondie!"
Yang whirls around as Mercury jumps at her, a foot raised for a kick. Yang retaliates with a blow to Mercury's kneecap.
Around her, the crowd gasps and...boos? Probably just booing Mercury for his actions.
Not so.
Several Atlas soldiers arrive in the arena, their weapons aimed at Yang. "Stand down!" they order as a confused Yang raises her hands in surrender.
Yang raises her eyes to one of the big screens. A replay of the incident is shown, but it's not what happened.
The screen displays Yang walking up to a defenseless, wounded Mercury, and taking out his right kneecap with a single, fire-fueled punch.
