JOSH POV

I grunted as I felt myself finally waking up. I had been dealing with so much, all on too little sleep that I meant to just catch a few quick winks at my desk, only to actually fall asleep. Straightening up and yawning, I also stretched, but remained seated in my chair at my desk, on which, I had a case file for the Origami Killer.

I looked through it again. There wasn't much. But then, with a shrug, I pulled open the drawers of the desk, perusing the contents. My gun, an old badge from my days on the police force, a bottle of liquor, which I kept for special occasions. Also, my new inhaler, which I quickly used, before standing up.

'Okay, quick wash-up and then try starting again from the top.' I told myself.

With that, I moved around my desk and across the main room of the apartment in which I stayed, entering the bedroom and cutting through to the en-suite bathroom. I washed myself up at the sink and then dried off, examining my reflection briefly as I considered my next move.

I was then caught off-guard by the doorbell suddenly ringing. Confused, I made my way back quickly to the door and answered it and was stunned to see Jessica Riley standing there.

She was wearing her hair in a low, loose ponytail and was clad in dark skinny jeans and a black jacket, under which a black turtleneck was visible. She wore simple black boots, no jewellery, and only light makeup.

"Um, hey, sorry, but you left your card, asked me to call if I remember anything?" she greeted me hesitantly.

I tried to recover from my surprise. "Um, yeah, yeah that's right. Come in."

I stepped back and let her into the apartment. She stepped in and I saw her looked around, clearly taking it all in.

"Can I take your coat?" I offered.

She started, but then smiled. "Oh, thanks."

She removed the jacket and handed it to me and I hung it up on the stand next to the door.

"Have a seat." I said, gesturing to the seat on the other side of the desk from where I usually sat. "Can I get you a drink?"

She shook her head. "Ah, no thank you. I...I really need to say this. Right now."

So, accepting that, I made my way around to my seat and sat down.

"So, what did you want to tell me?"

She took a deep breath. "I remembered something. The morning after Johnny disappeared, a letter arrived for his father. He read it and then just left. I never saw him again after that..."

"And you think that letter could be connected to what happened..." I finished for her. "I take it that you didn't see what it said?"

"No, he took it with him, but... Well, I don't why, but I kept the envelope." she explained.

As she said this last part, she pulled said envelope out of her bag and set it on my desk. I picked it up and examined it.

"Hmmm, mailed from the Carnaby district... No signs of any possible fingerprints or DNA... Old style typewriter, going by the font... All looks normal, except for the address..." I muttered.

Jessica caught the last part. "The address?"

"Oh, it's nothing, just thinking aloud. Still...this could be an important clue, you never know." I said, putting the envelope back on the desk. "Thanks for your help, Jessica. I'll let you know if it leads anywhere."

"Wait." she said suddenly. "I can't just sit around, knowing that my son's killer is out there. I want to help you."

I shook my head. "No, absolutely not. This is serious, Jessica. This man is a killer and I-"

"In that case, I'll be taking this back." she snapped.

I stared as she grabbed the envelope and stood up.

"This was a stupid idea, I should've known." she remarked. "If you want this, you have to take me on board, too. That's the only way that I can accept it."

She then turned and began to leave and I leapt to my feet.

"Wait." She stopped and I approached softly. "You're really something, Jessica Riley, I'll give you that. You've got a deal."

"So, are we partners?" she asked seriously.

I nodded. "Partners."

With that, we shook hands and I knew now that I had Jessica coming along on my investigation. I could only wonder what I'd now gotten myself into.
