Switch Up! A Tale of Multi-Verse Ash Ketchum!

Chapter 24: The Greatest Challenger

Pikachu looks up to Ash from his position on the ground. This would be a challenge, Pikachu knew that much, but Ash never backed down from any challenge. None of the Ashes did that. Pikachu would not fail his partner… any of them.

Seeing Ash so confident made Pikachu grin in anticipation. He still wanted to give that Latios a piece of his mind…

Meanwhile, Ash throws his Pokeball, ready for this battle to start "I have someone who wants another crack at that Darkrai" Ash mutters as he brings out his first Pokemon "Heracross I choose you!"

The single horn Pokemon comes out of the Pokeball and his eyes immediately zero on his opponent. A glint shines on the Pokémon's eyes at seeing that Darkrai again.

-FLASHBACK-

"I want Heracross" Kalos-Ash states as he presses the button "He should have another go at that Darkrai"

The screen flashes and shows different Heracross…

"What's this?" Alola-Ash looks closer at the screen.

Darkrai replies for their benefit "This screen shows the several iterations of Heracross. From the one that performed in the Johto League to the one that existed just after his capture…"

"So that means I can get the Heracross of my time?" Kalos-Ash questions the Dark Type Pokemon.

"That's correct"

-FLASHBACK END-

"A choice that will make little difference. After all, type advantage is not everything in a battle!" Tobias swipes his arm to the side "Especially with my Darkrai! Start with Ice Beam!"

"Dodge it and move forward, Heracross!"

Heracross steps aside from the Ice Beam and flies towards Darkrai "Hera!"

"Now get it with Megahorn!"

Green energy covers Heracross' horn as he sails towards Darkrai.

"Raise your Ice Beam!" Tobias commands, with Darkrai complying.

Heracross sees this coming and rolls to the side without prompt from his trainer to avoid each attempt at freezing it. This leaves Heracross right in front of Darkrai, leading to a super effective hit on the Pitch-Black Pokemon.

"That's gotta hurt!" The announcer comments, wincing at the pain the attack must have caused.

"Now that it's close! Use Dark Void!" Tobias smirks at seeing the chance to use his favourite combo.

Darkrai releases a black sphere at Heracross who couldn't even dodge from the close proximity.

"No Heracross!" Ash curses his arrogance at getting one hit in "Use Sleep Talk quick!"

"Cross!" Heracross charges up a beam of energy on his horn that he releases at Darkrai, also point blank.

That took Tobias by surprise, and he couldn't do a thing as Darkrai sailed back towards the wall of the battlefield "Darkrai!"

Darkrai comes out of the wall and flies slowly towards Tobias "Dar…"

"It's still asleep, but keep your distance! Use Dream Eater!"

Darkrai's shade shots off from his body and phases through Heracross, whose eyes widen in pain. Darkrai also felt rejuvenated from the move's secondary effect.

"Now finish it with Dark Pulse!"

"Heracross use another Sleep Talk!"

Darkrai charges the dark energy and shoots it as a beam, while Heracross, still asleep, flies towards Darkrai, its horn shining brightly.

Dark Pulse comes onto Heracross, who pushed forward with Megahorn.

"Come on Heracross! Just a little bit more!"

Heracross pushes through the dark type energy and comes closer and closer to Darkrai.

"Don't let it come closer, Darkrai!" Tobias shouts at his Pokemon.

The type advantage helped greatly in this instance as Heracross pushes one more time and break through the Dark Pulse.

"What!?"

"Heracross breaks through Darkrai's assault! Is this his chance!?"

In the stands…

"Woo! Ash is doing great!" Barry jumps from his seat cheerfully.

"Indeed" Brock smiles at Ash's tactic "He prepared Heracross for this battle. Sleep Talk is a great counter to Darkrai's Dark Void!"

"And now he has Tobias on the ropes!" Dawn add her two PoKé.

In the battlefield…

It was at that moment, that Heracross' eyes snap open "Hera!" The Pokemon woke up, though not unscathed. Hell, he looked to be barely standing…

"You're awake, Heracross!" Ash smirks at this "Now let's end this battle! Use Reversal!"

Spiralling energy coalesces on Heracross' arm "Hera… Cross!" Heracross slams its arm onto Darkrai, who couldn't move away.

"Darkrai!"

Darkrai's body rolls backwards until it rests in front of Tobias, completely unconscious…

Tobias takes a step back, understanding the clear declaration that the trainer in front of him made… A smirk blooms on Tobias' face at seeing both Trainer and Pokemon staring at him defiantly… 'Can this be… an interesting battle?'

"Darkrai cannot continue, Heracross wins!" The referee announces, raising the flag on Ash's side "Choose your next Pokemon!"

"Incredible!" The announcer cries out in surprise "Tobias' Darkrai, the Pokemon he used to singlehandedly defeat not only the Gym Leaders, but also his league opponents until now has been defeated!"

In the Hall of Origin…

"Ash did it!" Victini cheers wildly, jumping from one spot to the other "He's gonna win!"

"I wouldn't be so sure about that…" Marshadow appears from behind Victini "Tobias' team is still an unknown. Also he has Latios as well… It can go either way…"

Next to the Swords of Justice, Zacian and Zamazenta talk among themselves "That was a fine strategy" Comments Zacian "A fine chap that one"

Keldeo groans at the use of the British slang.

"It was a wicked show" Zamazenta nods in agreement.

"Still, that Heracross looks knackered" A new voice comments.

Keldeo's eyes twitch at seeing Calyrex descending near them… 'Another brit?! Come on!'

In the stands…

"He did it!" Dawn cheers along Piplup, who looked happy at the end result.

Brock nods as well, pride radiating from him "He did, I can't believe it, but Ash may have a chance"

"Hey what's happening to Heracross!?" Barry stands up, startling the other two.

In the battlefield…

Ash happily stares at Tobias, who recalled his unconscious Pokemon.

"Hera…"

But his attention is called by his Pokemon, who staggers to the floor, breathing heavily…

"Heracross!" Ash runs to his Pokemon whose breathing turns erratic "Calm down buddy" He pulls out a Pokeball and recalls the Pokemon. Then he turns to the referee and tells him "I forfeit Heracross and I want someone to look at him"

The referee, who was next to Ash the moment he stepped in the battlefield, nods in agreement and calls out "Trainer Ash forfeits his Heracross! Nurse Joy please come in!"

A Nurse Joy rapidly walks towards Ash and takes the Pokeball "I'll take care of Heracross"

"Thanks Nurse Joy"

"It seems that Heracross overexerted himself while dealing with Darkrai's overwhelming power! A noble call by Trainer Ash!" The announcer calls out.

Ash returns to his box while the referee stands in his spot "Trainers bring out your Pokemon!"

Tobias pulls out a blue and yellow Pokeball that Ash doesn't recognize, but it gives him the idea that this Pokemon is not Latios…

In the stands…

"That's a Quick Ball!" James comments in surprise "I haven't seen one outside of a store!"

Jessie and Meowth look undaunted by the comment "So?"

"I wouldn't waste a Quick Ball in a slow or common Pokemon!"

In the battlefield…

From Ash's Pokeball comes out a trusty partner of his…

"Char!" Charizard roars as he shoots a Flamethrower to the sky.

Silently, Tobias throws the Quick Ball and from it comes a rather bizarre Pokemon…

It was fuchsia and blue, mainly. Its body somewhat resembled a Porygon to Ash, but its form was completely different… It looked less stable…

Ash pulls out his Pokedex and analyses the Pokemon…

"Porygon-Z – Normal Type: The evolved form of Porygon and Porygon2, its behaviour is noticeably unstable, which is apparently due to the incompetence of the engineer who updated its programming"

"An evolution of Porygon, huh?" Ash looks warily at Tobias' choice. He knew little to nothing of the Pokemon… "Be careful with that Pokemon, Charizard" Ash warns his Pokemon, only to receive a Flamethrower at his face… "I get it, you'll beat it…"

-FLASHBACK-

"I want Charizard also" Kalos-Ash looks through the different Charizard versions and comes to the one that actually resides in the Alola timeline… "This will be awesome…"

"Just choose and let us mourn for our future demise…" Darkrai mutters pessimistically.

-FLASHBACK END-

In the stands…

"Ohoo… Ash brought out the heavy guns…" Brook comments with a smirk.

"I didn't know Ash had a Charizard!" Barry hangs from the railing in surprise "I'm gonna fine ya for not tellin' me Ash!"

"Is Ash's Charizard strong?" Dawn looks to the older man curiously.

Brock's smirk turns wider "Let's just say that Tobias will be grateful if Ash only takes a Pokemon or two…"

In the Champion's Booth…

"Ah! I remember that Charizard!" Mr Goodshow comments in excitement "I remember as it defeated a powerful Blastoise despite type advantage!"

"So this will be an interesting battle?" Cynthia looks at Ash with approval "I'm just glad that this Tobias didn't blitz through the league with just one Pokemon… it would make everyone look bad"

"Yes, there's no fun on that"

In the battlefield…

"Start this with Lock On, Z!" Tobias starts the battle confidently.

Z, as Tobias called the Pokemon, zoomed in front of Charizard, who steps back at the weird Pokémon's presence. The Virtual Pokémon's eyes shine brightly as they lock onto Charizard.

"Don't let it get away, Charizard!" Ash shouts to one of his oldest Pokemon "Use Flamethrower!"

Charizard's maw is filled with flames that he spews on Z "Zard!"

Z is pushed back by the flames, but seemed to resist well enough.

That, put a smile on Tobias' face "Very well, I'll show you that all my Pokemon are dangerous to battle. Z use Zap Cannon!"

The Virtual Pokémon's limbs converge in front of its body, forming a ball of electricity.

"Don't let that hit you Charizard!" Ash tells his Pokemon "Fly away now!"

Charizard replies with a roar and takes to the sky, getting ready for Z's attack.

Z's eyes meanwhile zero on Charizard, as it moved… its pattern… the Virtual Pokemon analysed everything. Based on that, it made a trajectory that predicted its course should the Flame Pokemon dodge.

With all the calculations done in less than a second, Z fires the Zap Cannon towards Charizard who, as the trajectory predicted, swerves to the side to avoid the attack.

Thanks to the power of Lock On, Charizard shrieks in surprise as the Zap Cannon stop above him and falls down with a thundering crack.

"Rah!"

"Charizard!" Ash cries out in surprise "How did it do that… Right Lock On!" The Pallet Town Trainer curses himself for such carelessness.

"That's one of Z's numerous traits that make it a fearsome Pokemon" Tobias tells the Pallet Town trainer, passing a hand through his long hair "But I've got to show you the main reason it is in my team… Z use Conversion2!"

"Covnersion2!?" Ash looks warily at the Porygon-Z that soon was covered in a transparent energy cube that shifted through many colours until it landed on dark brown "What did that do…?"

"For those who don't know the power behind Conversion2, it changes the type a Pokemon is to resist the type of moves the rival Pokemon uses!" The announcer looks down to a piece of paper he's been given by an assistant "Such ability is legal!?"

'A move that Charizard used?' Ash thinks frantically as he sees Porygon-Z flex its limbs…

"Z use Tri-Attack!" Tobias commands his Pokemon "Shake things a bit for Ash"

Charizard growls at that and looks to Ash. Ash sees the look and nods "Okay let's do this… Charizard dodge to the side and fly towards Porygon!"

The Flame Pokemon soars towards Porygon-Z and strafes to the side with a turn.

"Now get it with Slash!"

Charizard's claws glow white as he strikes the Porygon, but to his and his trainer's surprise, the claws bounce off…

"What!?"

"Char!?"

In the stands…

"Slash bounced off Porygon-Z's body!?" Barry flinches at the sound it made "What happened!?"

Brock strokes his chin in thought "Porygon-Z changed types for a better match against Charizard's moves… the only move it saw was Flamethrower" Here he gives a shrewd smile "If Ash guesses that Porygon-Z is in my territory, he'll be fine…"

In the battlefield…

"This is Brock's typing…" Ash smirks at making sense of Tobias' tactics.

"Now that it's close! Use Lock On again!"

The smirk vanishes from Ash's face "Oh not again!"

Z registers Charizard's movement like last time and readies for an attack.

"Use Tri-Attack!"

"Fly away again!"

Charizard flaps his wings and flies away from Porygon-Z, turning to the side at the border of the battlefield, the three beams following after him.

Ash watches Charizard fly around the stadium outpacing the beams, but he knew it was not something that would last long… 'I need to do something…' Just in that moment, he saw Porygon-Z, who seemed to be following Charizard with its eyes…

Charizard roars as his pace starts slowing down…

"That's it!" Ash realizes after watching Z. He turns to look at Charizard, who was flying right behind Tobias… "Charizard fly towards me!"

Charizard makes a sharp turns to the side and flies in Ash's direction, trusting his trainer to lead them to victory…

"Oh and pick up Porygon-Z while you're at it!" Ash smirks at Charizard, who returns the smirk.

"What is this!?" The announcer looks at Charizard in shock as he picks up a surprised Porygon-Z "Charizard has picked up a passenger! What will Charizard do!?"

"Z no!" Tobias flinches at Charizard's actions "What is it planning?"

"Now use it as a shield!"

Charizard stops flying and turns towards the three beams still coming at him. The Flame Pokemon smirks as he holds Porygon-Z in front as the beams reach him.

In the void…

"Nice strategy" Brock crosses his arms "I didn't see that coming…"

"And that is Ash's strategy" Oak concludes with a smile "You have to expect the unexpected…"

In the battlefield…

Porygon-Z struggled in Charizard's grasp after it was hit by its own technique.

"Get away, Z!" He calls out to his Pokemon, despite knowing that it had no way of getting away from the physically stronger Charizard.

"Charizard show it what we do to rock type Pokemon" Ash pumps his fist to the sky "Use Seismic Toss!"

Charizard's grip on Porygon-Z tightens as he flies to the sky and creates momentum by spinning. In one of the spins, Charizard rushes to the ground and slams Porygon-Z with tremendous force…

Tobias' eyes harden at this 'This is not going as planned…'

Z for his part rose from the ground heavily damaged by Charizard's last move…

"Return, Z"

Z vanishes in a beam of red light and Tobias glances at the Pokeball for a moment before picking a new one… "You took me by surprise… better take all the advantage you can because it ends now…" And he throws the Pokeball, a pink Pokeball…

Ash didn't like one bit the Pokemon that came out of that Pokeball…

In the stands…

"Ain dat a…!?" Meowth nearly drops his tray at the identity of the new Pokemon…

"Yes, I think it is…" Jessie looks on with envy at the new Pokemon… "I want one…"

"That's a Heal Ball!" James looks starry eyed at the ball in Tobias' hand

Both Meowth and Jessie deadpan at James… He looks sheepish…

In the Champion's booth…

"Maybe we should regulate which Pokemon one can enter into a league and which can't…" Cynthia looks at the Pokemon in surprise… "But I believe Tobias is a special case…"

"It doesn't seem fair" Charles Goodshow pouts like a kid "At the age of that boy, the rarest Pokemon I had was a Copperajah! And it was because it wasn't from Kanto and nobody knew it!"

"Nevertheless, I have faith that Ash will give us an interesting battle out of this one…"

In the battlefield…

'He has Darkrai, Latios and now this…' Ash stares with a frown at the new Pokemon 'He really was made to stop me…'

Indeed, because in front of him floated Cresselia, the counterpart of Darkrai…

This just got a little more difficult…

-BREAK-

Hello again!

Today we start the last battle in this story, Ash Vs Tobias!

Many things happened… among them, Heracross taking revenge on Darkrai.

Besides Sceptile, Heracross was the other Pokemon that battled it and lasted longer than a few seconds. So Ash took that Heracross gave him the chance to battle it once again… And he did it! Also Heracross overdid it and spasms on the ground because of it. So there's that….

Then comes the battle of Charizard! Yes BABE! OF COURSE CHARIZARD IS HERE! To be honest, the moveset Charizard has is a bit of a mix of several iterations. Somehow, they thought that making it forget Seismic Toss was a good idea (Fak iu BW!). SO he'll have a bit of a mix of moves.

So, Tobias' Porygon-Z, a choice made by reviewer Toa Solaric. Thanks for that suggestion! It was a Pokemon Ash never formally met and it helped him complete the Sinnoh Pokedex as well. It's an interesting choice due to the moves it can have. Conversion2 is a move that can tide a battle sideways and I hate it when I see it in competitive! So thanks for your suggestion! The moveset was changed a bit, but you'll see why in next chapter most likely.

So Charizard uses Z (For short, because writing Porygon-Z is a bother due to the '-' in it) as a shield for its own Lock-On-Tri Attack. And then, guessing the typing it changed, used Seismic Toss to finish it… only it didn't and Tobias recalled it, bringing out a Cresselia of all Pokemon!

Now, the Cresselia is a Pokemon suggested by Shazim62202116, so cheers for you! You'll see how your Pokemon does in the next chapter!

Onto reviews!

Toa Solaric: This is... it! The fight that we've been waiting for! Not to mention I like how Kalos Ash standing up to Arceus after learning the truth about why he kept losing every seasons and the consequences of their actions on the multiverses now! I'm waiting to see what you choose for the rest of Tobias's team and see how Ash gonna to beat him with a mix team.

ME: I've also been waiting for this! I have in my mind what to do and I know it will be epic! Well congratz because one of Tobias' members is a Pokemon you suggested! Adaptability is a great ability and mixed with Tri-Attack is a dangerous combo. I changed Trick Room to Conversion2 to further confuse Ash, and because of something you'll see in next chapter or the other.

Reader0007: the hype is real!

Oh, maybe that's one of the reason why ash is like this. You said that gameverse and animeverse must be balanced. Ash is based of red, and while red is the strongest badass edgelord:ash is ... seems less impressive, but funny and quite lovable.

ME: Yeah it is! Onto the other review, it is actually. Ash is the opposite of Red in many aspects, positive and negative mind you. Red is not perfect and neither is Ash, but they balance each other.

Shazim62202116: looking forward to this

ME: You'll forward to next chapter as your Cresselia is battling! Thanks for the suggestion!

Lightningblade49: my guess is Pikachu, Charizard, Sceptile, Greninja, Nebby(Solgaleo) & one surprise, given he can select any of his Pokemon from any time period he could technically get a super experienced version of his released Pidgeot, Haunter etc. My guess is Tyranitar from the Larvitar he hatched in Sinnoh.

ME: Truthfully, I can't tell you that as it would be spoiler, but you know now that he's using at least Pikachu, Heracross and Charizard. The rest is anyone's guess…

Kazotskye: Yo if one of Ash's Pokemon is Shuckle and he uses that busted tactic that kills anything imma laugh at every god damn Pokémon's pain.

ME: Hope not, it would make no sense as there is no drama in that! I felt like Chris McLean right there… Anyway, Ash will use Pokemon under his ownership. Sorry.

Chrono Phoenix: I'll predict Ash's four strongest Pokemon Pikachu, Charizard, Sceptile, and Greninja. As for the remaining 2 slots I'm interested to see who will be chosen.

ME: Can't tell ya, it would spoil everything. But you got two out of four so far! Not bad!

Hall Gowrt: Harsh but you are challenging my hero, he is gonna WIN! OFFICIAL F to you ARSE-SUES GOOO ASHHHHH! GOOO ASHHHH! Alright team guessing... pika-GOD-chu, char-DAD-zard, gren-F-ninja... now I would say snoring guy but he is used too much in other Ash V Tobias battles! was gonna say Inferneous Shit but a 40-60 on that, SCEPTER is overused too but a 70-30 here...I think LYCAN-LEAGUE-WINNING-ROCK is a must, as his trump card! Alright now I am to consider those mons which evolved during the course of this fic... so random three choices here coz I don't remember which, No Normal-flying types, GOODRA OR GARCHOMP as the dragon, GLALIE and BAYLEAF... that's it! AND HOPE YOU SWITCH UP THAT FROG'S moveset... no Slash too bored of that... and let him have a random low ass Z-move for fun's sake!

ME: I cheer along you my friend! GOO ASH! Okay, love the names, but it would be spoiler if I say anything. Also Z-moves are not possible due to this being Kalos-Ash (Doesn't know how to) and because in the last battle Ash's Z-ring was destroyed to allow Pikachu to learn Pika Papow… Pika-Pika Thunder.

ZerothMask: Oh Unova. The Gen 5 games were the peak of what Nintendo/Game Freak could do and were my favourite games. For once, everyone felt like they had an absolute role. But alas, the anime absolutely sucked. Period.

Damn. This is getting intense and hype! Heh. Didn't you'd include the Galarian legends. Though, I thought they were Scots? Doesn't matter, still entertaining.

Great work, congrats, and good luck!

ME: Gen 5 Anime had everything to beat all the past seasons. A great base game, interesting lore, compelling enemies and a challenging gym challenge. But they ruined it like Homer did in Trash of the Titans (Leaves like Ray Patterson with a Jazz song). Thanks! I'm also hyped and I'm the writer ha ha!

I didn't include them at the time, but the joke of Unovan (Yanks) vs Galarian (Brits, scots, whatever) was too tempting. Also I'm Argentinian! I dunno about foreign slang beyond what I see on the tv and the internet. But thanks for the clarification.

OC-Trainer-Gray: Good, that was what I was referring to, I just happy there's a time where Ash has the changes.

ME: He will keep them… if he wins…

Scribe0magic: Ummm what about the manga? that's based off the games and follows them more than the anime as the anime is separate to the games. As for the multiverse felling the effects, well... take into count all of the other fanfics where Ash does win the League. By the logic I saw it would mess with the balance of the multiverse as well, which just isn't true.

ME: For the sake of not going on a long winded explanation that will probably take a thousand words about the multiverse of Pokemon, its causes and consequences… a wizard did it.

XD: Amazing league final you've given us, and you're right this end of the battle is better than the one we all expected. Also, very clever of you to introduce Let's Go, Pikachu's Pika Pika Thunder because it always hits, its power (102) is greater then Thunderbolt's (90), and, taking advantage of than Charizard lost the Mega Evolution, its damage goes x0.5 to x2. I can't wait to meet other 4 Tobias's Pokemon that you've chosen and how will Kalos-Ash deal with them.

ME: I love that even if you're a guest, you sign your review. That way I can talk to you properly. Anyway, thanks! That was my logic. I mean, if you had to make Pikachu learn a new electric type move it never used, which one will you teach it? Maybe Magnet Rise or even Wild Charge… but there aren't any moves that would make an improvement on Pikachu. So I choose that, and seeing the similarities, I opted to keep Electroweb.

Blizzardblaze174: This is a great start to the finale of what was originally a comedic fun fic! It still is, but this has serious implications for the universe! It's rather nice how Arceus gave Ash a final chance to prove that he can win, and break the stupid imbalanced cycle created by us and the writers!

ME: Thanks! When I first started this, even I took it like a joke story, but it got serious with time. Still a fun and relaxing story read overall as it doesn't need too much focus to enjoy. That's what Ash wants to prove… will he make it?

Guest #1: Is Tobias's team is gonna be Darkrai and Latios those four? Yveltal, Rayquaza, Lunala, Dialga, Latios, and Darkrai would be a crazy team.

ME: Hope not! It would crush our favourite trainer! As you've seen today, not every Pokemon Tobias has is a legend.

DarklighterUSA: You think you could have two different endings, one where Ash wins and the other where Ash gets his ass handed to him?

ME: Nope, the ending is already decided…

Guest #2: Oh shit just got real!

ME: Yeah it did!

Guest #3: Great chapter! I love the reasoning behind why Ash has to always lose. It makes so much sense. I also like how he challenged Arceus. It helps make this battle more interesting and important. I can't wait to see what kind of team both trainers will have. Keep up the good work!

ME: Thanks! I actually I'm proud of the reasoning as well. Of course, this is a challenge to decide who lives and who doesn't. With his life on the line, Ash always acts to survive. Well you got Ash with Pikachu, Heracross and Charizard, and Tobias with Darkrai, Porygon-Z, Cresselia and Latios, so there's that!

Guest #4 (Or as I suspect, also Guest #3): Tobias's potential team is gonna be hard to beat no matter what it is, I wonder what other 5 Pokémon the Ashes picked. I'm betting Greninja, Sceptile, Infernape, Naganadel, and Solgaleo.

ME: Of course, and by the end of this chapter you realize how dangerous it is!

Saludos!
