Shizuka went to bed as soon as she was home from the dance. She still couldn't stop recalling the event of what happened that night. The lively situation, the dance, the gentle words came out of Lucifer's lips. So Lucifer is going to tell me something? I'm wondering what does he want, she contemplated. But this could endanger our friendship. Does he...
"Hi Shizuka-chan! Still haven't go to sleep yet?"
"Hi Athena."
She saw there are many of her deities surrounded her bed. Since she was a child, she was in close relationships with the deities served by her family, but along the way, she decided to make acquaintances with more entities to help her during her missions. Most of them were not directly formed contracts with her, but they became her friends. That makes her easier to summon them. "It's quite uncommon for you guys to coming out this late. Where are the others?"
"Oh, Artemis is busy with her businesses at the moment. She's been having some issues with guys who were annoying her followers", Aphrodite replied in laid back. "Such a militant protector."
"Well, don't blame her. She adores her followers very much", Athena responded.
"But at least she could be more relaxed. What's wrong if some girls in her patronage are having some sexy time with the guys? I'm sure it will be fine."
"You better keep those words to yourself, otherwise you'll anger her."
Shizuka could only shook her head at listening to their banter. Athena and the goddess of love weren't known for getting along with each other. She tried to sleep as she wrapped herself in her blanket, trying to make herself comfortable.
"Getting trouble with sleeping, dear?", Hecate asked.
"Actually, it's not like that. I just can't wait for tomorrow to come. I will get to visit Lucifer."
"You really do? What is your business with the King of Light?", Thoth tilted his head slightly in confusion.
"He told me that he wants to talk to me. I'm kind of excited."
Thoth and Hecate looked at each other. Worries were visible in their faces. All of them knew of her closeness with Lucifer, but still, they couldn't help but concerned with her safety. "You look different, Shizuka."
The little girl had finally sitting on her bed. It was time for them to know. "I know that, and it must be clear enough for you to see. Actually... I'm in love with Lucifer."
A moment of silence, and then sudden tension between the deities occurred. Some were doubtful, while the others were being silent. Nevertheless, all of them had opinions over her sudden confession.
"Shizuka, are you sure with your feelings? Tell me!", Athena asked her while she shook her shoulders.
"I'm absolutely sure about that. I can't deny my feelings anymore."
"But we just want to make sure, little one. Demons with complicated past and personality like Lucifer can be deceiving", Thoth spoke calmly, but his face showed great distress like Athena.
"I'm not lying. Lucifer didn't charm me either. I love him, deeply. I can't wait to show him my feelings. Is that a wrong thing?!"
Aphrodite immediately come to her aid. She hugged her firmly and calmed her down. "Come on, knock it off! Why can't you just stop tormenting this girl? Give her a break!"
"Easy for you to say so, goddess of love. I remember you were used to be harsh on Shizuka", Ostara suddenly appeared. Aphrodite could only grunted in silence.
Athena approached the girl, tried her best not to disturbing her already agitated emotional state. She was just concerned, "We are very sorry for being so overprotective. We didn't mean to put you into debating. We know what Lucifer is like."
"Well, so do I!"
Hecate raised her eyebrows at her sudden snapping. She knew that Shizuka was highly sensitive when it comes to what she believed in, so the deity walked towards her slowly. "Would you please leave us alone? I need to talk to her."
Thoth and the others hesitated, but they complied.
"Hecate!", she immediately cried in her arms.
"I'm here, dear. It's alright."
"Hecate, why did they went against my own feelings for Lucifer? Is it wrong that I fall for him?", Shizuka questioned the goddess.
Hecate took a deep breath, "I don't think so. They wouldn't act that way if there's no clear reason. Actually, we are worried about you. You told us that you know him. Has Lucifer ever told you about himself and his past?"
"He had."
The goddess widened her eyes. Lucifer opened himself to this girl? Shizuka must be so special to him, but why? "I see."
"From the way you look when I mentioned Lucifer, I have a feeling that you were used to know him."
Hecate looked at her in desperate. She loved this young girl like her own daughter, and she would do everything in her power to protect her from danger, even if it meant she had to sacrifice herself. But for now, she must kept silent. Shizuka couldn't know this now. "I'll tell you about it later. For now, rest", Hecate ended their talk by covering Shizuka with her blanket.
Hecate took a last look at the sleeping girl, and rejoined with Thoth, Aphrodite, Ostara, and Athena outside of her bedroom. "She's asleep for now."
"Okay. Well then, what are we going to do?", Ostara questioned them all.
"I think it's best to keep an eye on both of them. But this time, we must not interfere too much into her relationship, unless it's necessary. Shizuka has been way too close with Lucifer, started from the moment they knew each other. This will be tough", Athena responded.
"I agree. It is going to be dangerous if we get in Lucifer's way. None of us will survive his anger if we keep her away from him", Thoth spoke. "I believe that's why you went into hiding every time Lucifer is around her, isn't it Hecate? You don't want to provoke him."
Hecate nodded. "I don't want to keep them away from each other either, since Shizuka's so close to him. I don't know why, but I have a strong hunch that perhaps, Lucifer had started to change."
"How is it possible?", Aphrodite raised one of her eyebrows. Confusion was visible on her beautiful face.
"Shizuka told me that Lucifer had been telling more about himself to her more often. Lucifer had definitely started to open himself up to other people, but I never thought he would be honest towards a pure hearted girl like her. I can tell you all this, they are drawn to each other."
"Artemis definitely wouldn't like it her favorite girl is in love with Lucifer. I mean, I know that Lucifer is kind to Shizuka, but that wouldn't stop Artemis from protecting her innocent friend", Aphrodite commented.
"That makes the situation even more complicated than we thought then. I'll suggest that we wait until we know what Lucifer wants from her", Ostara advised. "This is the best way to keep our little girl safe. I just hope that Lucifer wouldn't do anything that might hurt her feelings."
In the meantime, Homare was reminiscing over her interactions with Lucifer while preparing herself to visit him. She remembered it all, started from her first meeting.
"Lucifer, there are few people that I would like to introduce you to", Mephisto beckoned her and her two comrades to enter his office. "Allow me to introduce you to Homare Todo, Lund, and Strom. They are some of the elite exorcists in the Order. I picked them specially to be your bodyguards."
Homare could sense the King of Light gazed at her, examined her entire appearance. She knew that he wasn't going to do anything odd, but just wanted to make sure of some things. But from the moment she saw him huffed, she knew Lucifer was upset.
"Samael, you told me that you chose them for me", Lucifer questioned his younger brother in annoyance. "I don't mind with these two men, but I don't trust this young woman."
Homare was in shock, and Mephisto raised his eyebrows at Lucifer's sudden comment in wonder, while the other two men stood next to her stayed silent. Nevertheless she knew that they had similar surprised expression that they were trying so hard to conceal. "Pardon, Lucifer-sama?"
Lucifer hated it when it comes to repeating his words for the second time. "My apologies, Todo-kun, but like I said, I don't trust you. Pardon me for being blunt, but I am only working with men because I deem that they are more logical. I found women are quite hard to deal with. Not to mention, I am still not sure about your competence in your work."
Homare replied, tried to hold her anger, "Lucifer-sama, with all due respect, I understand that you mistrusted me since this is our first interaction meeting each other, but I can assure you that I am different from those women. I am more than competent to be one of your bodyguards. I can help you with many things."
Lucifer approached her, his movements was graceful but still intimidating. Homare never thought she would be standing face to face with this tall demon. For a second, she was thinking on running away, her entire being warned her that she had done a terrible mistake for challenging him. But still, she wouldn't let him patronizing her. She's an exorcist, for goodness sake! "During my experience, I have been dealing with opportunistic women, who are only trying to get close and use me to get what they wanted. What makes you think that you are different, Homare?"
Homare hardened her gaze at him, "I can help you to learn about our kind."
Bingo. Just as she suspected, Lucifer was slightly surprised, shown from how he widened his eyes. He was silent as he stared back at the King of Time. "I have made my decision. From now on, you, Homare Todo, will work for me along with your comrades as one of my bodyguards. Whenever I need you, you must come directly to me and... assist me with my needs. After all, you promised me your help, and I will looking forward to what you want to show me. That is all for now", his large cloak billowed as he left the room.
Mephisto smirked, "Wow, you can handle this situation quite nicely, Homare. My apologies for his behavior. My older brother has been through many things. Please excuse him."
"No need to feel sorry, Sir Pheles. It's fine."
"You should have been more careful, Homare. You have just challenged the most powerful of the Demon Kings", Lund warned her.
"I agree. You're lucky that he didn't think to obliterate you right on the spot", Strom added.
"You two don't have to worry about me. I'm still in one piece, after all."
"We wouldn't like it to lose a good friend like you", Lund spoke simply, and she snorted.
The next day, Lucifer asked her to meet him directly. It was his first day of work. "Welcome, Homare."
"Lucifer-sama", she bowed to him. "I heard that this is going to be your first day of work from Sir Pheles."
"Yes. I have made enough preparation for my meeting soon."
Homare was confused. "Oh? Alright. Then, I believe you must have another reason to summon me."
"I need your advice on dealing with humans that I'm going to meet. I am aware that humans like you who are living in this era is different compared to those in my time. Do you have any suggestions in mind on how should I face them?"
"In my opinion, Lucifer-sama-"
"Call me Lucifer, to make it simpler."
"In my opinion, you need to make yourself approachable, Lucifer."
The King of Light was puzzled. "Approachable, huh? Alright. I can try to be friendly. Do you have any examples?"
"Um... How if you show people your demonic traits? Just to convince them. Nowadays humans are getting more logical. Rare of them to believe the existence of demons. Especially, we are getting distant from your kind, so to speak, if not for us exorcists available to protect them in times of need."
"I thought from my face it's already apparent that I am a demon."
Homare took a long breath. "Lucifer, that's not what I meant. If people look at your face, you looks just the same as any other human man. I think it's best for you to show them your tail."
Damn, she had never see him this enraged. "Showing my tail?! Are you out of your mind? No, absolutely not! I will not show my tail in front of many people!"
"Lucifer, please calm down! It's just a suggestion. You asked me my advice, and I gave you one. What's wrong with it anyway?"
"Homare, if you asked me to do so, that means you wanting me to get naked", Lucifer huffed as he shook his head. Homare widened her eyes. "Let me explain this to you, Homare. We demons know etiquettes, like you humans. We have swore to never show neither our demon hearts nor our tails."
"Okay."
"If we show our demonic traits to other beings, it would put us into harm. We will become vulnerable. Do you want to know what happens if we get attacked when our tails and demon hearts are seen? We'll die. Not to mention, I don't like it when people see my tail. I feel weak."
Homare was surprised to say the least. For the first time, Lucifer shown how fragile he was, shown from the way he was crossing his hands, but he became stoic again. "What happens that makes you feel this way, Lucifer? Just tell me. From the sound of it, it's like you are afraid."
"Watch your tongue", Lucifer hissed, made her taking a step back away from him. "Whenever I show my tail, I feel like I was bare. Just like any other tails, mine is extremely sensitive. Just the slightest of touch makes me uncomfortable. You can imagine how painful it would be if I sitting on my tail, got it stuck when I want to close the door, and especially when overly curious people trying to touch it. The last one I mentioned would be the worst case that could possibly happen."
"I can see why it matters so much for you. You are obeying the rules, especially now you are possessing a comfortable vessel."
"Yes. I'm glad that now you understand. I can't promise anything, but I will consider your words", he ended their talk.
Homare also remembered when they were during at meeting with the prime minister. She had never seen him so angry. He almost turned these humans into smallest of atoms. He did calm down in the end, but the stress clearly took a toll on him. What comes after was even more surprising.
"I am sick to see all your attitudes! You called yourself benevolent, yet you are ignorant towards those in need. I'm going out of here, and I will save that little girl!"
At the time, Homare was in shock. This particular Demon King... This occurrence seemed to show something far more paradoxical about Lucifer. He valued the life of other beings! Was this a trick or something? Of course she knew that as the official envoy of Gehenna and the direct link between humans and his father, he would start working right away, but this was too much to think.
There was one time when she asked her father about Lucifer. Saburota told her that if anything, he was nothing but unpredictable. A force of calamity, people say. Saburota told her to stay sharp. No one knew what could possibly make Lucifer mad.
Homare was even more surprised at the next fateful event. The little girl whom Lucifer had saved was coming to the mansion for a visit.
"Hello, I'm looking for Lucifer?", a soft voice was heard from the front door.
Homare for the first time saw him smiling, so softly.
"Wait for a moment, Homare. I'm going to open the door, meanwhile you stay here", Lucifer told her.
Homare widened her eyes. He smiled. Who could possibly made him making that expression? It's not that she questioned his ability to change his demeanor, but all this was too sudden. She could hear their conversation outside of the room.
"Ah, Lucifer! I'm so glad to see you! I'm not interrupting anything, am I?"
"Actually I am talking with my bodyguards right now, but it's alright. Nothing urgent. I'm happy that you are here to visit me. You are the first actual person to visit me casually."
Homare couldn't ignore her curiosity anymore. "Lucifer-sama, who's coming here?"
As he turned his back to her, the young exorcist hold her breath sharply. There's a little girl behind him. The little girl was shy to say the least. When Homare tried to see her face closer, she backed away, hiding behind one of Lucifer's legs.
"Oh Homare. I see that you have coming out of the room. I was about to call you here", Lucifer spoke, ruffled the little girl's hair.
"Lucifer-sama, who is this girl?", Homare questioned him, her whole body shook.
"She's the little girl I saved that night when we went home from the meeting", Lucifer held that girl reassuringly.
The little girl was calling him. "Lucifer?"
"Come on, don't be shy", Lucifer caressed the little girl's back. Then he gazed at Homare, "Homare, allow me to introduce you to Shizuka. She's... my new friend."
"H-hello."
Homare took a closer look at Shizuka. This girl was the strangest person she had ever met. Red hair, green eyes... these physical traits were definitely almost nonexistent in Japan, unless a person like her was a mixblood. She had heard from Mephisto about Lucifer saving someone that night, but she never expected that person to be this young. "How old are you, Shizuka?"
"I'm 9 years old. How about you?"
"16."
Lucifer spoke again, "I know what's inside your mind. To me, she's so fascinating. I have never seen someone like her before. I saved her when she was being chased by the ones who tried to hurt her. Luckily I got there in time to stop them. Shizuka will also be helping me with getting to know about you humans' best potentials."
"Wait, Lucifer. Are you telling me, this girl is a pure hearted human?", Homare creased her eyebrows.
"Yes, she is."
Homare have heard of how rare a pure hearted human to demons before. Lucifer seemed to be interested in this little girl so much, and she didn't like it one bit. Suddenly she was struck by headache.
"Homare, are you an exorcist?"
"I thought from my uniform it's already obvious. Why are you asking?", Homare gritted her teeth. Her patience was running thin.
"I want to be an exorcist like you when I'm older. I think demons are fascinating and I want to help Lucifer with his peace mission", Shizuka smiled innocently.
Homare could see how pleased Lucifer was with her words. This little girl... she didn't like her. She had unusual appearance, too innocent, and not to mention too gullible to be an exorcist. "Sir, I'm sorry, but I need to go."
Lucifer was surprised. "What's wrong, Homare? Do you feeling unwell?"
"I need to clear my head for sometime. It's spinning."
"Alright, you can go", Lucifer gave her his permission as he frowned. He looked at Shizuka in sad smile, "I'm sorry about that. She's not usually like this."
"Am I doing something wrong, Lucifer?", Shizuka questioned him innocently.
"No, you're not! Don't worry. Perhaps she's just tired."
"I want to have more friends."
"Don't worry. I know you can. Just be patient with her", Lucifer smiled reassuringly.
Homare stumped her feet as she walked away from the mansion. That young girl... how dare she stood beside Lucifer! All this time, Lucifer had never make that expression whenever he was with her.
Wait a minute! Why did she felt this way? Lucifer was her master. She shouldn't be acted that unbecoming. Not to mention, why did she jealous towards Shizuka? She's just a little girl. Somehow when she saw them together, the sight boiled her blood.
Shizuka... that girl was definitely odd in almost every way. How uncommon to see a girl like her being that casual towards demons, especially one as dangerous as Lucifer. From her appearance, Homare could see that she would be most definitely beautiful when she grow up.
Oh damn. I can't believe this. Am I just having a crush on Lucifer!?, Homare thought anxiously. No, no way! It's highly uncalled for of a bodyguard like her to fall in love with her master. She was supposed to keep him safe in duties, not having feelings for him! How complicated this situation was putting her into.
Sometimes she hoped for a normal life like that red head. Seeing her getting closer to Lucifer made her burning with jealousy. Her prediction was right. Shizuka was getting even more beautiful, and now it's apparent that Lucifer was interested in her, more than a friend would. Homare was getting tired with Lucifer constantly talking about her. Shizuka, Shizuka, Shizuka... Could she just had a peace of mind just for a moment?
Soon Homare see that Shizuka worked hard with her dream of being an exorcist. That girl also showed her potential in missions, shown from how easy it was for her to summon Hecate. Not many people can summon such a high class demon effortlessly. Homare was surprised when she knew from Lucifer that she was a witch. She witnessed when Shizuka defending herself from being slapped by Suzuki. This girl was a force to be reckon with, another reason for Homare to understood why Lucifer liked her. When Shizuka said she had already considered her as a friend, for the first time she had another person who want to accept her wholly, despite her imperfections. Shizuka have such a big heart, Homare learned a lot how to treat people better from this girl. So this was why Lucifer liked spending his time with her. Lucifer was right; Shizuka was able to help people change, and even though they were different in many ways, Shizuka was willing to understand her struggles and her past.
The outcome of her interactions with Shizuka was startling to say the least. Lucifer was getting closer to her too. There was one time when they were on a mission together, Homare and her two comrades have to defend their master from harm done by one of their opponents. The situation was getting heated, and Homare was injured gravely from one of the attacks.
"Just give up, pitiful exorcists. You will never be able to defeat us. Otherwise, we'll crush you all, starting with this young woman", one of the demons was stepping on her leg, kicked her knees with immense strength, Homare could feel her joints dislocated. She yelled in pain.
"You, get away from her."
The demon was trembling when they heard Lucifer's cold words. Homare wasn't expecting to see their master would come to her aid. The King of Light held her bridal style and handed her to Lund and Strom.
"Lucifer-sama, why-", Homare tried to question him.
"I can see you're badly injured, and I will not going to stand it. Now please, stay with your comrades." Lucifer then gazed at both men who hold both of her shoulders, "I want you two to take good care of her. Give her first aid. From her injuries, if she doesn't get first treatment, she would be likely suffering from necrosis."
"Of course, Sir. What are you going to do?", Lund inquired him.
"I'm going to take this into my own hands. Don't interrupt my fight. You will see how dangerous it would be if you interfere. It would be the last thing I need to see one of you to defy my orders", Lucifer responded. Then he gave the demon a blank stare. Homare knew that if he gave them that look, he's definitely pissed. "How dare you hurt these humans, and even more, beating one of my bodyguards. You will know how frightening it would be to fight against the first of the Baal."
And the fight was on. Homare was frightened to see his anger. He put everything he had into his fight. No wonder he was known to be most hostile of the Demon Kings. This was also her first time to see his mad side. He smirked devilishly as he was about to obliterate their opponent. In just one blast, the demon was no more.
Homare was in shock when she saw him walking towards her. His face was tainted with demon blood, and he was trying desperately to calm himself down. "Homare, are you alright?", he panted.
"I'm alright, Sir. But you're injured."
"Oh, don't mind me. Do you forgetting this? I'm a demon. I can heal myself quickly. Let me help you."
Lucifer knelt and started wrapping bandages on her wounds. How surprised Homare was to see him being this gentle. Lucifer looked so different compared to him during the previous fight.
"Lucifer-sama, you don't have to do this."
"Shush it. You are injured, and I don't care a lick of what's inside your mind. I'm still going to help you. You have done well to defend me, and it's time for me to return the favor."
Homare observed him finally done tending her wounds. "You look different now."
Lucifer raised one blonde eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"You are not the same cold demon I used to know when we first met. You are starting to change."
Lucifer snorted. "Well, I think there's no denying that anymore. I think I have started to change since I received this mission from father."
"I see."
Lucifer's face turned serious. "Homare, I know this is going to be too much for me to ask from you, but I need your help."
"What is it?"
"I need you to help me dealing with my trouble making nephew, Asmodeus."
Homare widened her eyes and cleaned her glasses. "Wait, do you mean son of the King of Time? He's here? Since when, Lucifer?"
"Since two weeks ago. I am trying my best to watch over him while he's here, but my missions are taking a toll on me. I don't think I can do this on my own anymore. Please, watch over Shizuka. Let me know when something happens."
"Lucifer, from your voice, I can sense you are afraid. What is going on?"
Lucifer's face turned grim. "It's not in me to say this, but yes, I am afraid. My nephew is planning on something, but I can tell that it's not going to be good. Homare, no matter what happens, I want you to stay silent. I don't want to make her worried about me again."
"Lucifer, this isn't right. You know you can't hide this from her forever. Sooner or later, she'll find out."
"I know. I'll try to find a good timing to explain everything. But for now, please, do it for me."
Homare was overwhelmed with fury when she saw Lucifer was hurt in protecting Shizuka when she faced Asmodeus along with their group. For the first time, she had something to avenged for, the lives of her friends, the ones meant so much to her. And it hurt her so much to see them traumatized. She was with both of them the whole time during their recovery.
"Lucifer, why did you keep your distance from us?! You can't do this!", Homare clenched her fist.
The King of Light was just silent, not responding to her angry tirade.
"Do you know, I hate to see you like this! I can't believe you would distancing yourself from all those close to you. Lucifer, won't you say anything?"
"What can I say? It's clear enough. You're right, I'm a coward. I ran away and refuse to face my responsibility. I failed you all."
"You didn't! How many times should I tell you that??"
Homare realized something. She did in love with him. The pain was excruciating to see him being this broken, and she wanted to do everything she could to help him recover. She was surely delighted to see him heal so quickly, but it seemed, everything she did would never be enough. When she heard from Mephisto about Lucifer's confession that he falls for Shizuka, she felt like her heart tore up in pieces. No matter what happens, Lucifer would only give his attention to that young, innocent, and lovely red haired girl. A girl who was more attractive compared to her.
"To me, you did not fail."
"How so?"
"I can't voice it right, but I know that you have done the right thing. Shizuka didn't deserve to have that horrible memories of your fight. She needs you, Lucifer." Actually she questioned why did she defending the girl. This girl was definitely the one who stole Lucifer's heart; she didn't deserve to have him. Then she realized, it was unfair of her to think about Shizuka that way. She's her friend. She needed her now. "I'm going to see her. I'll tell you how it turns out after I get back."
Of course she knew about their fight. It was the first time for her to see Shizuka debating with him. At first she thought that their friendship would be over, but what happened was entirely opposite. Instead, they were growing even closer to each other. Lucifer told her many things about himself, like his past, and even more, Lucifer gave her affectionate gestures!
Am I making a right decision? I know that it's going to be unlikely for him to take this well, but I want to let him know, Homare mused. Oh well, what comes after could be think about later. It was time for her to tell him her feelings no matter the outcome.
Homare soon walked out of her family's mansion and head to Lucifer's place.
Meanwhile, Lucifer was walking around the bedroom, waiting for Shizuka to arrive. He was getting giddy with each seconds passing. The feeling of being nervous added to that, and knowing that he was waiting for her makes him a bit excited.
The sound of knocking was heard from the door.
"Oh, come in!", he permitted. How surprised he was to see that it was Homare.
"Hello, Lucifer-sama. Am I interrupting something?"
Lucifer was a little disappointed, but he didn't show it on his face. He must stayed professional. This was his bodyguard, after all. "No, not all Homare. Although, I was surprised to see you. What a coincidence."
Homare saw that this could be a chance. It seemed he was in a good mood today. "I'm sorry about my sudden arrival."
"It's alright. Is there something the matter?"
"I want to have a few words with you, if you allow me."
Lucifer was kind of expecting what she wants to say. It must be important, but he noticed something was off. She had never looked this... antsy before. Of course, he had seen her acted stern, calm and collected, but nervous? Never. He nodded.
"I know we have known each other for six years since I was assigned to work for you as a bodyguard along with my fellow comrades. I have to say, it was a pleasant experience."
"I am glad you feel that way. During our duties together, I found you to be quite an enjoyable company. Is there something else you would like to share?"
"I found you to be different than what I have learned about you during my time in studying before becoming an exorcist. You are able to show you can change, and I found myself to take a liking on you."
Lucifer was getting uncomfortable. There was something hidden under those words and he shifted awkwardly. He never thought to see her coming to where he sit and placing her hand on his cheek. Just before she gets closer to his lips, he put a stop to this. "Homare, what are you doing? What is the meaning of this?"
"Lucifer, I am in love with you."
Lucifer was in shock. This was just his imagination, right? She was in love with him?! His bodyguard? He suddenly had a headache. He was struck with annoyance. This was why he didn't work with women. In the end, things like this would happen. Damn it. "Are you sure with your words? I know how charming a demon like me could be sometimes. We are able to put other beings especially humans under our spells."
"Yes, I am in love with you, Lucifer. I have been feeling this way since you saved me from that demon during our mission that time. Is it wrong to let you know my feelings?", Homare spoke in agitation.
The King of Light shook his head. "No, it's not wrong at all. I understand that you humans can express love, different than us. But Homare, I am sorry to say this : I can't return your feelings."
The hurt and agony in her heart were excruciating. He turned her down so abruptly. Even though he had tried to be as gentle as possible to voice his answer, it's undeniable that she was broken from his rejection. She knew that she would be rejected, and she was just wanting to make sure of his feelings, but knowing that he definitely wasn't interested in her crushed her heart. "I understand. May I know the reason?"
Lucifer took a deep breath. "I like you Homare, but I would rather keep our relationship professional."
"There's another thing, isn't it?"
Lucifer smiled at her sadly, guilt apparent in his eyes. "I am in love with someone else."
Homare thought of the possible person. "It's that red head, isn't it? My friend?"
"Yes, Homare. It's apparent, isn't it? I am sorry, but I have fallen in love with Shizuka. I didn't mean to hurt you."
"It's alright. Shizuka is much better than me after all. I can see how you like her so much, and it's clear from how often you mentioned her every time we talked", Homare replied truthfully. She hated to admit that she was lost from a girl five years younger than her, but she will move on. What mattered now, was to make sure that these two would be happy with each other, whatever happened between them both next. Besides, she adored the young witch. "I will not going to stand in your way to get her."
"Now, what are you going to do?"
Homare took her bag and headed to the door, "I will go home for now. I want to have some time alone. Nevertheless, thank you for your willingness to listen to my feelings. I hope you don't mind if I take my leave."
"I see. Homare, I can understand if you don't want to work for me anymore."
"No, I still want to work for you. It's just... I will take a break for a few weeks. I hope you will be able to talk with Shizuka. Believe me Lucifer, I know what it feels like to hold your feelings for someone in a long time."
Lucifer could tell that she spoke from experience. Holding her feelings for 6 years was surely quite a long time, and more importantly painful. He should have been more sensitive with her feelings. He only gazed at the door as she left.
In Shizuka's house
Shizuka was preparing herself to go to the mansion. She was aware that her familiars, along with the other deities who became her friends were standing before her.
"Shizuka, you have make up your mind, isn't it?", Helios asked her. He had heard of everything that happened, and he just hoped that everything between her and his king was alright. Besides, he wasn't known for being an assisting deity in ancient times for nothing. Behind him, Athena was fuming. She was most definitely not pleased.
"Yes Helios. No matter what, I will go there. I hope you can accept my decision. Besides, Lucifer would never hurt me."
"Shizuka, I really don't like the sound of this. I feel like this is too rushed. But I know that even if Hecate couldn't stop you, then none of us could. Well, I think you will owe Artemis an explanation. Be careful, young one", Athena wished for her.
"I will. By the way, wish me luck."
She took her leave. When she walked to the mansion, she never expected to see Homare was covering her face. How shocked she was to hear her sobbing when Shizuka approach her. "Homare, why do you cry? What happened?"
"It's okay. I'm fine", she sniffed.
"Homare, you clearly aren't okay. If you are okay, you wouldn't be crying here out in the open. Just tell me, I'm here for you."
This girl! Couldn't she see that I want some time alone?, Homare gritted her teeth, but no matter how she hated her for the bad luck that fallen upon her, she couldn't find it in her to lash out at this witch. Her best friend, and her former love rival. "Don't mind me. I will be alright. You better get inside the mansion. He is waiting for you."
"Oh, um... Okay. Is it okay that I leave now?"
"Yeah, don't worry about me", she tried to smile as best as she could. She watched Shizuka walked away in awkward. She might have lost in love, but she was sure everything would work out in the end. She had dealt with things more difficult than this before, and she won't let this affected her in finding a new love. Besides, people say that time heals almost everything. "Shizuka, you have no idea how lucky you are. I hope you don't feel shocked to hear Lucifer's words soon."
Lucifer glanced at the knocking on his door, and how it brought happiness to him to see that his best friend and crush are here. "Shizuka, I am so glad you arrive."
"I saw Homare was crying out there when I was on my way to get here. From the looks of it, I think she's just came out of your place. Did something happened?"
Lucifer shifted awkwardly. "Well, she was here to tell me about something. Turns out, she developed feelings for me. She told me that she loved me, but I turned her down."
"Well, I think she couldn't take it so easily when we talked briefly before. How exactly did you rejected her?", Shizuka raised one suspicious eyebrow. She knew how blunt he could be sometimes.
He gulped, "I told her that I can't return her feelings. I don't feel the same as she was, and I would rather keep our relationship professional, considering that she is my bodyguard."
Lucifer was frightened to see her standing so quickly in front of him. "Lucifer, I can't believe it! You did that to her?! At least you could be more delicate. Being rejected is painful, you silly!"
"It's not my fault if I want to be honest! I would rather say what's inside my mind directly instead of lying of what I feel! Do you forget that?", he became defensive.
"It's not what I meant. Lucifer, it's so heartbreaking to be rejected. That's what people feel when they are fail, especially in love", she shook her head in annoyance. "Never mind about it. I will talk to her again so she can feel better."
Lucifer had never felt this blue. "I am sorry. I have tried to be gentle when I told her. I never thought she would cry."
"Nevertheless, that hurt. I bet it. So, what would you like to talk about? You did want me to come here."
"First, how is your day?"
"I have just came out of my house. My familiars were seemed to be in a state of unease. But that can be handled. How about you?"
"Nothing too interesting, besides of what happened before you got here, and our rather... lively talk."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to ruin the mood."
Lucifer became nervous. It was clear she's still fuming. This time, he would make the situation better. "Well, I do promise to tell you something."
"Yes! What is it?", her interest peaked.
"I hope you would not be shocked."
She nodded, her mind filled with excitement, anxious, and fear.
"I have been wanting to tell you this since we met. I know that when I met you while you were still a little, you are special. For the first in my experience living in this world, you're the first human that wasn't afraid of me. Instead, you figured me as a friend, something that means so much to me."
"I would never think of you as something less", she smiled at him.
He returned her loving gesture by ruffled her hair. "And that's why I chose to stay. The next thing I know, I found myself liking to teach you so many things, sharing my knowledge with you about the history of both our kinds. I assume that makes me your teacher too in some sense", he smiled mischievously. She laughed and nodded. "I also became your protector, and as the time went by, I watched you grow up. You have taught me many things as well. You taught me how to be more compassionate and understanding towards other beings especially humans. In this case, you showed me how to be selfless", Lucifer bowed and blushed, took another effort to continue. Was she ready for another confession from him? "Do you still want me to continue?"
"Yeah, just spill it out. I-I... I'm glad you leaned many things from me."
Lucifer took a deep breath, tried his best to calm himself. "I feel something different about you started from your fifteenth birthday. When I saw you that time, you mesmerized me. I realized, you have becoming a very lovely young woman, Shizuka."
"Lucifer...", she murmured, unbelievably shy as a blush shown on her cheeks.
"Started from that, I feel like something emerged inside of me. It's like my cold heart, truly beating for the first time. I became so emotional. Just to let you know, at first I hated this feeling. I didn't want it to weakened me and making me fragile. Every time I tried to ignore it, the stronger it gets the more often I think about you. But the entire opposite happened. I have never felt this strong in such a long time. What makes it even crazier, I like the way it makes me feel about you. So, I decided to embrace it and accept the feeling."
"L-Lucifer, what?", Shizuka's eyes widened.
"I know this is shocking. It's so rare for a demon like me to feel this way, but you meant so much more to me than I originally thought it would be. And how afraid I was to see you that time when we dealing with my nephew. I am worried to think what would happen if you get hurt again. Yet, when you were in a state to recover, you showed me your strength. You hold something more than meets the eye. You are innocent, but I think this nature of yours is your greatest strength. I have never felt this grateful to meet a human girl like you. You are seeing me as I truly am.
"You have no idea, how strong my urge is to punish the ones who mean harm on you. Not just that, I want to hold you in my arms and making you feel okay. I want to see you happy. I'm willing to give you my everything, showing you that I can be different than those demons you have seen. Shizuka... I love you."
Shizuka held her breath. Her childhood best friend was confessing his feelings for her! This must be the reason why he rejected Homare! She couldn't imagine how hurt Homare must have been, knowing that Lucifer was in love with her. She felt pity for her friend, and dumb for not realizing it much sooner. She saw him walked towards her and squeezed her hands gently. "So this is the reason why you rejected Homare? Lucifer... you are in love with me?"
"Yes. I have been wanting to tell you this for a long time, but... many things got in the way. I am ashamed of myself when I rejected Homare, but I promise I will do what I can to make it up to her. I am not going to deny my feelings, and I will not hide this from you anymore. I want you to know, I love you with all my heart, my maiden", Lucifer caressed her cheek. "But, I know that you are in love with another man. I will accept whatever your answer would be."
Shizuka suddenly cried. She was too overwhelmed with her own feelings. This... this sounded too good to be true!
"Are you alright?", he suddenly worried, afraid that he might hurt her feelings.
"I'm okay. The thing is, I never thought you would have feelings for me. I'm too meek and gullible."
"I would never think of anything less about you. You are the kindest, strongest young woman I have ever met."
Shizuka intertwined their hands together. "Lucifer, when we talked about the person we have thought so much. In my mind that time, actually I was about to tell you, that the man I have fallen in love with... it's you!"
The King of Light was puzzled. "Wait... so that means, you're reciprocating my feelings?"
"Yes! I was afraid to see your face that time, because you seemed to be broken after I told you that. I'm sorry if I make you feel hurt."
"No, it was my fault. I have misunderstood this the whole time! I didn't listen fully to what you wanted to say, and I took conclusions too quickly. Oh in the name of Gehenna , I hate my ears!", he groaned in embarrassment, realizing his mistake. Shizuka kissed him on the cheek, something that he never thought she would do. He was stunned.
"Then I guess both of us are clueless. But know this, my king, I am in love with you too."
Lucifer brought their foreheads together. "You have no idea how much this makes me so ecstatic. You are making me happy since we met, and even more when I know you love me", Lucifer smiled lovingly at this gorgeous girl before him. He showed her his demonic form. "You have seen both sides of me. I am a beast. I can hurt you."
"I know you wouldn't hurt me. You are the one I trust the most. The man I love", she hold his clawed hands.
"I see. But I might not going to be a typical type of lover."
"Yeah, but I have never been in a relationship either. We are even", she smiled.
"Then, do you want to be my lover?"
"Are you kidding me? Of course you know my answer. Yes! Yes, I want to be your lover!", she hugged him tightly. They laughed together with realizations of their feelings for each other. "Although, I think we would have to be gentle with Homare. I feel bad for her."
"I'm sure we can find a way", Lucifer assured his lover.
"Is this your demon heart? It's beautiful", she admired his look. She put her ears closer to his chest. The soft beating of his heart was so calming.
"Yes. I know I look frightening, but this is who I am."
"I'm not afraid. In fact, you really are the most beautiful demon I have ever seen."
Lucifer smiled, and reverted to normal. Then he remembered something. "Shizuka, there is something that I would like to try."
"What is it?", Shizuka suddenly became nervous.
"Well, do you remember the scene we saw on that movie when we watched it together that time?", he scratched his hair. "It's alright if you don't want to. I wouldn't force you into doing it."
"Actually, I am curious too. But, I have never done this before", her face blushed so much as she thought about the idea.
"Neither do I, but I promise, I'll be gentle", he whispered while caressing her cheek. Lucifer held her face in his hands, shifted in embarrassment as he tried to find a good angle. He didn't want her to feel uncomfortable. Lucifer smiled awkwardly at her, then lowered his head slightly and took her lips in his. Shizuka gasped at first, but she relaxed and returning the kiss, wrapped her arms around his back. His left hand was on her cheek while the other was on her waist. His tail wrapped itself around her and he brought her closer to him.
The kiss made him feel so many emotions inside. It felt like a hollow part of him was finally filled. His loneliness and solitude was gone, replaced by something far better; he was filled with love for the beautiful girl in his arms. She was his light, the one who points the way out when he was wandering alone, lost in the dark and clouded by madness. Ironic for him to think, he was used to hate humans, but now he fell in love with one of them.
When their lips were apart, she was in tears again.
Lucifer was nervous. "Is something wrong?"
"I-I'm okay. It's nothing", she touched her lips. The aftertaste of his lips on hers was still there, and it made her feeling so adored. "It's just that.. you were so gentle, you surprised me. I never thought you would be the one who gave me this, my first kiss."
Lucifer nuzzled her face and ran his thumb over her lips, "I have been wanting to give you this since our dance. Do you like it?"
"Yes, I like it very much", she buried her face in his broad chest. She could hear their hearts beating in the exact same rhythm. When she saw his eyes, those bright green eyes were filled with adoration.
"I am glad to be the one who give you your first kiss. You have me tamed. Shizuka Lovegood, you are the most beautiful young woman I have ever seen. I love you, Shizuka, unconditionally. My lovely maiden", he kissed her cheeks. "And to be honest, I like our first kiss. It was a very pleasant feeling. I have never felt this good in a long time. I understand now why your kind like doing this so often. Do you want me to kiss you again?"
"Yes, please Lucifer", she replied earnestly.
Lucifer pulled her closer to him, wrapped his arms around her and kissed her lips softly. God, she drove him insane. The soft, sweet taste of her lips... He was afraid he wouldn't last much longer from this sensation. She was so addictive. She was divine. He hummed in approval when she returned it and deepened their kiss.
Shizuka had never felt this cherished by someone before. She couldn't believe it. She shared a kiss, with the incredibly handsome demon who was her longtime friend. The one who had always been there for her. He was willing to do everything in his power to make her happy, and this alone was enough. He was so tender in this kiss, it brought tears to her eyes.
Outside the room, Mephisto and his siblings watched the whole thing.
"Oh my goodness, they finally kissed!!!", Iblis shouted in excitement.
"Iblis, calm down! You will ruined it", Azazel scolded his younger sister. "Lucifer is so lucky."
"These two will definitely be a great couple", Mephisto crossed his arms and shook his head while chuckled.
Lucifer stared deeply at her afterwards. He kissed her forehead and wiped her tears away. "You are tearing up from your eyes again."
Shizuka sniffed."These are just happy tears. Lucifer, I have been lonely my whole life, and then everything changed since you came. You make me so happy. I wouldn't trade this for anything. I love you, my King of Light."
Lucifer laughed, "I used to believe that this world is a cruel place. But then, I think this world is not so unfair after all. I finally got to meet you. Although, I do hope that we meet each other much sooner. If we do, perhaps things would be different. You made me waiting for quite a while."
"Perhaps we were meant to meet each other in this time, don't you think?"
"Indeed."
But before he managed to give her another kiss, the door opened.
"Congratulations!!!"
The couple were surprised. "What the-?"
"Congratulations, big brother! You did it!", Astaroth praised him.
"Wait a minute! You all have been watching us this whole time?", Lucifer was horrified. Behind him, Shizuka was blushing deeply. Of course, they never thought all of them would be coming inside the room.
"Of course we do. We even watched both of your kisses! Damn, that was romantic!", Iblis winked at the flustered couple.
"You did it, Lucifer. I bet you must be satisfied now. You finally got her attention", Mephisto wrapped one of his arms around his shoulders.
"I am. I have never felt this lucky, to be in love with someone so kind and pure hearted as her."
"But you do realized you are in love with a human girl, right?"
"I do, and I don't care. I would not let anyone hurt her ever again. She's my girlfriend now."
Suddenly Shizuka widened her eyes. "Oh god, I just realized something. Lucifer, I think it's highly possible for the Order to find out about our relationship! What are we supposed to do?"
"Dammit, you're right. I think it's best to hide our relationship for now."
"But the press? I don't think you can run from them either", Amaimon reminded the two. "Especially there is still the last night of the festival, which is tonight."
"Oh my, you're right Amaimon", Shizuka shook her head in confusion. She glanced, "I guess no matter what, many people will find out. Lucifer, do you still want to come with me to the festival?"
"Of course. I wouldn't let you go there alone. Besides, both of us have already been the center of attention. I'll be with you."
"I love how reliable you are", Shizuka smiled, as he nuzzled. "By the way, I felt your tail wrapped around me during our kiss. It's tingly."
"Oh, sorry for that", he scratched the back of his neck. "Instinct, I guess."
"Is it common for demons to do that?"
"Oh yes. We are usually showing our tails to the one we are close with. But we are wrapping our tails around our lovers as sign of affection", Lucifer dragged her closer to him with his tail.
"It's so soft. I have been wanting to tell you this, I like your tail", Shizuka touched his tail, to his surprise. The simple pet of her hand on his tail made him quivered, and surprisingly, he liked it! He tried so hard to calm himself down from being overexcited. "Sorry, does it hurt?"
He flopped backwards, wrapped his tail around her hand. "It's nothing, don't worry."
Shizuka continued petting his tail, and he made a sound unknowingly, almost similar between the sound of a growl and a soft sound of whimper. "Lucifer, you just purred!"
Lucifer smiled in awkward, "I am sorry. I can't help it. Please... Continue."
"I never thought I would see the King of Light purred", Shizuka laughed and ruffled his hair.
Lucifer flopped back closer to her neck and nuzzled her gently as she caressing his tail. "Well, this is the first time for me being pampered. I think I can get used to this."
Mephisto and his siblings laughed while they watched the interaction between the two. I am glad for you, brother. It seemed you have found someone you can truly open yourself to.
The new couple went to the last night of the festival. Shizuka for once hesitated. And Lucifer for sure could see that she's worried. "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
When they walked side by side, tried to look for their friends, many people in the crowd were staring.
"Hey, that's Lucifer, right?"
"Why did he hold that girl so closely to him?"
Lucifer held her hand along the way. Poor Shizuka. She was not quite used to be the deer in the headlights. He saw many paparazzi are taking their pictures.
"Hey you witch, what are you doing, standing beside him?!"
Great, not this girl again!, he gritted his teeth. Meanwhile, Izumo, Ryuji, Renzou, and the others who were looking for them were staring with wide eyes. The way he hold her... was most definitely not the way between friends would do.
"Lucifer-sama, why did you choose a frail girl like her? There are many others who are much better than her!", Suzuki complaint in rage. Behind her, so many of his fangirls nodded in agreement.
"That is none of your concern. Besides... she is my lover now."
Everyone who heard it was in sudden silence. This was a joke, right?
"That is right. She is my girlfriend. I think there's no use for hiding this from all of you. Perhaps this could be a proof for our romantic relationship", Lucifer talked calmly, and he gave Shizuka a surprising kiss.
Of course, many of those girls were screaming at the sight. They were filled with jealousy at Shizuka. Just as one of the girls were about to snatch the couple away from each other, a woman was coming to prevent this from happening.
"Know your place, girl. No one disturb my master and his lover!"
"Homare?!"
"Hey love birds! I was walking around the academy for sightseeing while I took my break, then I see you two are attracting the crowds. Surely you would not think I am going to let you stuck in this whole skirmish, right?", Homare spoke in a more relaxed tone. Lund and Strom were behind her. "I called these two for helping me clearing out these people. Mephisto ordered me to do so."
"I see. Thank you for all your help", Lucifer spoke his gratitude.
"But truthfully, I don't think the kissing in front of them is necessary. You could attract more attention to you", Homare scolded the two. "You really want to show them how you are in love, aren't you?"
Shizuka immediately stricken with guilt. "Sorry for that. Homare, we didn't mean to be ignorant. I feel bad for you. I know we should have been more concerned with your feelings, and we are-"
"Oh, just never mind that. I'm perfectly fine. In fact, Shizuka, do you know that Mephisto and your friends matched you both together?", she raised her eyebrows in amusement.
"What?", Shizuka was stunned. "Lucifer? This is not a joke, right?"
Lucifer scratched his head and smiled at her in desperate.
"Homare, is this true?", Shizuka asked her friend.
She lowered her head, "Yes, it's true. I found out the reason after I asked Mephisto myself. Lucifer had been struggling with confessing his feelings for you. That's why your lover here asked for their help."
"Homare, I... I don't know what to say."
"Hey, it's okay. Like I said, I'm fine. Just so you know, sometimes I am jealous of you. You are so much better than me. Smarter, more beautiful, and most importantly... you have a pure heart and soul. I can see why Lucifer loves you so much. And I am okay with that. Of course, it feels hard to be rejected, but one thing matters to me now, is to see you both happy. Besides, from when you two meet each other, I know you would be inseparable", Homare hugged her firmly. "Lucifer, I trusted my best friend in your hand. I know you can keep her safe."
"Of course."
"But don't you ever, ever, hurt her feelings!"
"Have I ever did that?", Lucifer smirked in amusement.
"Yeah, when you got yourselves into that fight with her."
"And when you're ignoring me", Shizuka added to that.
"Oh, you're no fun, love", Lucifer raised one of his eyebrows at his lover. "Alright, I won't."
Soon they saw her gang coming towards them. All of them panted.
"Shizuka, Lucifer!"
"Guys!", she ran to meet them all. Izumo and Shiemi hugged her instantly as soon as she gets closer.
"I told you these two are becoming something more now!", Renzou nudged Konekomaru and Ryuji.
"So Shizuka-chan, you and Lucifer, huh?", Ryuji chuckled when she blushed sheepishly.
"Yeah, I guess now it's apparent, isn't it?"
"We are not surprised at all."
"I heard from Homare that you guys are helping Mephisto and his siblings to encourage Lucifer, so he could confessed his feelings for me."
They stunned. All the Exwires suddenly find it hard for them to gulp.
"Yeah, we are helping you both to get closer. Poor King of Light here is lovesick, but you're so clueless to his feelings. The reason we took part here as well", Konekomaru explained the whole thing.
Shizuka smiled at them. Her best friends. They took care of her in the best way. In some sense, they were right. She should be more sensitive to people, especially Lucifer, now that he's her boyfriend. "I see, thank you. You're really helpful."
"You really should be more aware of your surroundings, girl", Shura walked to their way.
"I know, I'll work harder on that."
Soon she heard some callings from the family members of her friends.
"It's a reunion, I guess", Lucifer laughed together with them."It's good to see you."
"It's a pleasure to meet you again, Lucifer-sama", Souji greeted him.
"It's good to see you and your family again. I assume that you are visiting to see your daughter?"
"Yes, I am here for my dear treasure Izumo-chan!", Tamamo quickly hugged Izumo, to the girl's dismay.
Shizuka laughed at Izumo who was debating with her mother. She knew for sure that actually Izumo loved her family, despite how dysfunctional they looked like. She was surprised when someone tapped on her shoulders.
"Hey Shizuka!", Kinzou wanted to hug her, but Lucifer growled instantly that suddenly scared him. "Wow, easy Lucifer! I just want to meet her and my idiotic brother."
"You would know better than to keep your hands to yourself, boy. You and Renzou are the same like two sides of a coin."
"So what was going on between both of you? Care to tell, Shizuka?"
Renzou facepalmed in annoyance. This older brother of his was so clueless! "Brother, I suggest you leave them alone. Demons are known for being possessive to their lovers."
"Really?!", Kinzou bawled his eyes out. "I thought you were the one going to be her boyfriend! You are so close with her. I saw that when you and your friends were in Kyoto."
"Brother, no! No matter what, she's my friend. I wouldn't want to anger Lucifer here if I were you", the pink haired boy tried to counter his teasing, afraid that Lucifer might be angry hearing about it. "Besides, I don't think she would like me. She's always good to people around her, so it's hard to know if she actually liked someone."
Lucifer just chuckled to see the bickering between two brothers. He saw the fireworks display were started, the sign that the last festival night was over. "Well, now that is a one impressive way to end the event."
Shizuka intertwined their fingers and stared deeply at her boyfriend.
"What?"
"It feels so right, standing here with you. I never thought I would finally have a boyfriend, and it's the demon who saved me."
Lucifer smirked mischievously. "Do you expecting for another guy?"
"Nope. I like you here with me", Shizuka brought herself closer to him. "I bet the news about our relationship would be spreading right now."
"Indeed, but we can face it together. And I believe, your parents need to know about this."
Shizuka suddenly widened her eyes. "I haven't tell you about what happened to me personally, isn't it?"
He picked up her words quickly. "Something happened before we become this way, isn't it?"
"Yeah. Actually, I was cursed by Aphrodite."
"A curse? Shizuka, I don't understand", the King of Light raised his eyebrows. Now he's livid. How dare someone hurt the one he loved! "What did she do to you?"

Lucifer let out a deep breath. "Well, at least what she was used to say isn't true. Someone is able to love you. I would never be tired to say that", he smiled and peppered her face with loving kisses.
