Jaiden wasn't entirely sure what she was doing. As soon as the Brotherhood had entered the room, she had simply drawn her dagger and let her instincts take over. The next few minutes were just a blur to her.
She found herself near a side door battling Hector's pets with Rapunzel at her side. The animals snarled and spit, showing their teeth. What even are those things? she found herself wondering.
Whatever they were, one lunged at her. She kicked it away and jumped after it with her dagger, but it easily sidestepped.
She heard Rapunzel cry out in pain and whirled around. The other animal had sunk its teeth deep into her leg.
"Rapunzel!" Jaiden heard Eugene shout as the princess fell to the ground. Jaiden ran forward at the animal biting her and plunged her dagger into its back leg. It jumped off of Rapunzel and dragged itself away, whimpering.
The other one growled and bounded over to its friend. Jaiden ran to Rapunzel and found Eugene already at the princess's side.
"I'm okay," Rapunzel was insisting, although her face was screwed up in pain.
Jaiden glanced at Eugene and saw that he had the same idea she did. They helped Rapunzel to her feet, and half-helped, half-dragged her out of the throne room. Her bitten leg was completely limp.
"Don't waste your time on me," Rapunzel argued as they helped her sit with her back to the wall. Jaiden shut the door and slid her dagger through the handle so it wouldn't open. "Varian and Lance need help!"
"So do you," Eugene said, getting down on his knees next to her and examining the wound.
"Well, you can help me later!" Rapunzel said. "Get back in there!"
"No," was Eugene's entire answer.
"I can't walk," Rapunzel said, speaking slowly as if to a small child. "What else are you going to do?"
Eugene hesitated. He didn't want to admit it, but she was right. They didn't have any supplies to clean or bandage the wound with.
Then Jaiden stepped forward and said, "Make it so you can walk."
Eugene gave the girl a sidelong glance, but she wasn't looking at him. She kneeled by Rapunzel and looked at the wound.
"Jaiden?" Rapunzel asked quizzically.
Jaiden looked up. "I can fix this. Just…trust me."
She was aware that was kind of a lot to ask, seeing as she'd met these people this morning. But Rapunzel just cocked her head to the side and said, "Okay, Jaiden."
Grateful, Jaiden smiled at her and placed her hands on her leg near the wound. Shutting her eyes, she began to recite words she knew Rapunzel was very familiar with.
"Flower, gleam and glow, let your power shine…"
Jaiden's hair began to glow with a pulsing golden light.
"Make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine."
A warm feeling was welling up inside of her, similar to the python sensation she had experienced with the decay incantation, but less wild.
"Heal what has been hurt, change the fates' design…"
With a breath, she released the warm feeling. It left her gently, less like a snake, and more like an eagle.
"Save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine."
She felt the eagle sensation swoop around the room, as if brushing everything with the tips of its wings.
"What once was mine."
She called the eagle back to her. It came much more willingly than the snake. Her hair faded and she opened her eyes.
She found Eugene and Rapunzel staring at her. She shifted uncomfortably and glanced down at where the wound used to be. It was completely gone, vanished without a trace.
"You...you just used the healing incantation," Eugene said in astonishment.
"Yes, I think she is aware of that fact," Rapunzel quipped, gingerly moving her leg back and forth. "I've never actually had that incantation done on me before. It was weird."
Eugene snorted. "I could've told you that, Blondie."
Jaiden grinned. She and Eugene helped Rapunzel to her feet. She took a few steps and admitted, "Well, it definitely worked."
"Ready?" Eugene asked, one hand on the door. Jaiden pulled her dagger out from the handles and Eugene prepared to fling the door open.
Just then, something crashed through the wall beside them. Jaiden was sure she leapt three feet in the air. She whirled around and her heart sank.
Through the hole in the wall, they could see into the throne room, and the very one-sided fight that was taking place in it. Varian and Lance were backed up against a wall, surrounded by the Brotherhood. And the warriors weren't alone.
The Queen stood in front of them, looking daunting with her sword on her back, her left hand firmly clutching the Mind Trap, and the other extended toward the wall she had just blasted open with a rock. When she saw the three standing in the hall, she smiled threateningly.
"Well, well, well," she said in a dangerously sweet voice, "look what we have here."
"Scatter!" Eugene shouted. They all dashed off in different directions, and not a moment too soon. Black rocks began shooting up all around them, chasing all three of them at once. Jaiden ducked and dodged the sharp rocks, trying to keep an eye on what else was happening in the room but mainly focused on not dying.
She heard shouts, but didn't stop to look. Instead, with absolutely no plan in mind, she charged at the Queen.
The Queen didn't do anything for a second, most likely unsure why Jaiden was charging her head-on. Jaiden herself wasn't sure, she just knew that the Queen wouldn't want to spike herself with the black rocks.
The Queen's split-second hesitation that cost her. Jaiden jumped at her and they both fell to the ground. Jaiden snatched at the Mind Trap in her hand, but the Queen managed to keep it just out of reach.
Then Jaiden reached out again, this time using her dagger to help her. She pried the Mind Trap out of the Queen's hand and with the dagger, flung it away.
It landed on the ground six feet from where they were. The crack in the corner deepened a tiny bit, and the Brotherhood paused as the light in their eyes flickered.
Jaiden saw Eugene stumble to a stop near where it landed. She shoved the Queen back down to the ground and screamed, "Eugene!"
Eugene glanced over, saw what had happened, and didn't hesitate. He swooped down on the stone and raised his sword above it.
"No!" the Queen shouted, but it was too late.
Eugene brought his sword down on the Mind Trap, and a bright blue light blinded them all.
Before her eyes adjusted, Jaiden felt the Queen shove her away and shout in outrage.
She opened her eyes and grinned in triumph as she saw the two halves of the Mind Trap lying dark on the floor.
