Despite her last cast, Jupiter did not have much trouble walking, or escaping the floor she was currently staying in. She already had a crutch, and despite her Grandfather's wish for her to leave the hospital only when all of her casts were off completely, Jupiter had mastered the use of it nonetheless. She hopped along quickly, naturally. She was glad that the rubber end made little sound on the tile of the hospital as long as she didn't hit it a certain way.
It was a stroke of luck that her Mother had bullied the staff to allow her to wear regular clothing. The only indication that she was a patient was the plastic bracelet on her arm, and she hid that well enough in her hoody's sleeve. She was tall for her age, so when she left the pediatrics wing she could be any other visitor if a little young to be wandering around by herself. She acted calm, and confident, because of it, most people didn't notice her beyond to look at her for a second as she hopped past.
And though she hadn't much time to look around at the hospital other than the areas that were relevant to her injuries and physical recovery, it wasn't hard at all to find the area she was looking for. She had been barely gone for half an hour before she found it. Medical areas… Always an easy way to hide the planet-side operations of Keepers. It wasn't obvious. That was the beauty of the design. The design of almost all buildings that had some sort of medical nature, had one such area, usually located on the most secluded floor if it was larger. If not, a back supply office that no one ever seemed to use. A place that most people would overlook because of its excellent cloaking device. Even better then Seraphi's memories. I can barely see the outline of one of the entrances. No one noticed what wasn't supposed to be there. In this hospital, it was in the basement, just past the radiology department and in the cafeteria.
Jupiter felt her breath let out in relief, glad one of her guesses for the location had been spot on. There, on the far wall, away from the buffet-style kitchen, a little bit past the small dining area. On either side, the bathrooms hugged the wall, probably so the Keepers could drag humans into an isolated space to Mind Wipe them when they got too close. She could see the way the crown molding on the wall had Oros writing. Stylized sweeps and swirling lines. The language of the Entitles. Jupiter took a breath, and the part of her that was closest to the woman she had been, felt nostalgic at the sight.
The wall looked like a display of the hospital's achievements, older looking, not fit to be in the front lobby but still important enough to keep in a place where it would be visible to a lot of visitors. She knew that the generic wall art on the far right was what held the access key to enter the Keepers' Hall proper, spotting the odd pattern that matched the fingertips of the Keepers, hidden within the boring landscape. And meant that she was right, not much had changed in the last hundred or so years since her first life had passed.
Jupiter stared for a second at the symbol of the Keepers on the wall, indicating that this was the central, most guarded area. It seemed random, it seemed to be a simple plaque among many symbolizing the achievements the hospital had achieved over the years, but Jupiter knew what it was. The symbol for the Keepers for the House Abrasax had changed only slightly- instead of incorporating Seraphi's symbol of the Orous Red Hawk in its center, it was now the Gilded Woman of Balem's personal symbol. Otherwise, the stylized circles surrounding it were the same.
She turned her gaze away from the wall, not hurrying, glad for the fact that the hospital had little security on this floor. Probably on purpose, to minimize the Keepers from being noticed, she realized with a grin. Better for her. Because most Keepers were careful, of course, but none of them ever were prepared for someone knowing about them in much detail outright.
Jupiter counted carefully, as she made her way across the room, towards the vending machines that were lined up along the walls leading to the Keepers' Hall entrance. She stared at the colorful display of candy bars and snacks, taking out three crisp twenties to play her part before she moved away and placed the bills into the machine to give her the appropriate change. A dozen Keepers were in the room, with five or so regular people who had probably missed the lunch rush. Most of the Keepers were probably S assigned- security and eraser personal, playing the part of the cafeteria workers and trained to keep an eye on the entrance. One was posing as a bored-looking woman, flipping through a magazine on the table nearest to the vending machines, a half-eaten lunch in front of them. They looked like a visitor to the hospital, regular clothes and a get well card next to the magazine- and the Keeper who was using the human face probably slipped away once and a while to change their face and props to avoid suspicion.
Jupiter bit her lip, grabbed her change, and started slipping the smaller bills into the vending machine. She turned her back on the Keepers, palms sweating. She had to be very careful. If she got caught, she would be hit with a memory wipe. It probably would be a weak one depending on what happened- no more than a minute or so. But she was scared of what even a mild one would do to her memories of Seraphi, and her developing brain chemistry.
"That's a lot of snacks, sweetie," said a female voice.
Jupiter let herself jump, and turned to face the Keeper that was assigned to be next to the doors. S class are allowed to talk to Terristals for the sake of security, was the random memory that hit her. Still playing her part, Jupiter took out a large canvas bag her Mother had packed her clothes in from the front pocket of her hoody. She gave the Keeper an annoyed face.
"I was sent by my family to get snacks," she huffed, as she looked at the Keeper, "My cousin is getting his gallbladder removed. I don't even know what that is."
The Keeper gave her a smile.
"Oh okay, just be careful of the soda machine- It ate six of my quarters."
"I'll buy the drinks from the cafeteria then, thank you, ma'am."
The Keeper went back to the magazine. And Jupiter turned her back on them again. She picked snacks at random, watching in the reflections of the other machines as the Cafeteria staff looked at her from across the room every few minutes or so, and how the Keeper right behind had moved their hand to their hip, seemingly casually, but Jupiter knew it was probably ready to grab its memory wiper at a moment's notice. Carefully, Jupiter stuffed all the snacks into the tote bag, hitched it over her arm, and hopped her way to the sealed drinks sold in the cafeteria. The Keepers who worked as the cafeteria workers kept their gaze periodically on her as she picked up a few water bottles and apple juice. Jupiter herself kept her gaze wandering around and made herself look bored. She was looking for something specific. And it had to be near the Keepers' Hall. It always is…
She paid for the drinks. The Keeper manning the cash register was staring at her boredly, even as the rest of them seemed to lose interest. She was just one human of many, and evidently she didn't seem too suspicious. She gave the Keeper a smile, and then calmly started to make her way back towards the entrance to the Keepers' Hall. The Keeper playing the woman looked up and gave her another smile as Jupiter slipped into the bathroom.
Jupiter frowned as she went straight to the center stall. She had barely slide the lock home when the door opened again, and Jupiter recognized immediately the shoes of the Keeper that had talked to her. She didn't gasp. Didn't panic. She just sat on the toilet, scrunching her nose slightly at the germs there were probably on the seat. The Keeper made their way to the last stall, the small click of the heels they had projected missing. Jupiter ran in her options. The Keeper was just keeping an eye on her, but Jupiter couldn't linger in the cafeteria. She needed to keep looking around the basement. Maybe it was in the radiology department just before the cafeteria...
"Sam," said a voice, urgent.
The Keeper in the stall stood, quickly, evidently startled.
"Yes?"
"Mom needs you on level five. Something might be wrong with the operation. Can you hurry?"
"Yes."
The toilet flushed. The Keeper washed their hands and left the room.
Jupiter knew she still wasn't alone. Carefully, she stood, and flushed the toilet, using her crutch to press down the lever. Carefully grabbing the tote to pull over her arm, Jupiter left the stall. The woman who had spoken was another Keeper, Jupiter noticed quickly. The face they were using was frowning, but they made no rapid movements, and their hands were not near their hips. Jupiter hoped her way to the sinks, ignoring them, and with some difficulty managed to wash her hands.
"What are you doing here?" said the Keeper, and Jupiter swiveled quickly in surprise.
She stared at the face about to lie, when the Keeper did the familiar gesture. It looked over its shoulder and turned back to Jupiter with a sweet, familiar chirp. No. No why would you do this for me!? You lied to another Keeper about security, you talked to directly to a Terrestrial without permission!
This is bad.
