Finn was officially discharged, and everyone was ecstatic to have him home. He went back to work, though they told him he could take more time off to rest. He laughed and told them he had had enough rest for a lifetime.
Ben had made good on his promise, and as soon as Finn arrived home, he presented an impressive bike to replace the one that was still a wreck in Ben's car. The reminder of where Ben's car was brought them back to the tasks at hand.
The very next morning, they were driving to Putt Putt Automotive in Ben's rental, Finn in the passenger seat, Rose right behind him in the back. Finn fiddled with the transparent blue crystal that now rested in his pocket. It may have been Rey's, but if it had claim on her soul, what claim would it have on her body?
"Are you sure we're here early enough?" he asked again.
Rose nodded. "The shop doesn't properly open until 8, but the doors are unlocked as long as someone's here to help, at least while I worked there. Plutt never wanted to lose out on someone's money."
"Why did you end up leaving?"
"Scholarships. My grades were good enough that most of the tuition was covered, plus what I got since Paige worked for the school. She was earning enough to support the both of us for the basics until I graduated." She shrugged, though neither man was looking back at her. "After she died, I was gifted the rest of my tuition for my degree due to the tragedy. I'm technically at Maz's as a charity write-off."
At that, Ben glanced back at her. She held back her emotions, simply stating facts. It hurt his own soul to hear her words. He had seen her go through immense tragedy and emotional turmoil, some that he had caused. He made a silent promise to himself that he would keep an eye out for her, that he'd make sure she was taken care of.
"Well, here we are," Ben announced, pulling up right in front of the closed garage doors.
"When does Plutt get in again?"
"He's not even in the shop until noon. He spends the mornings at Sheri's over on Main. Never go there for breakfast. He takes up an entire table for himself, and he stinks up the whole restaurant."
"Noted, Rose. You get to drive the rental home. Are you up for it?"
"Only as long as you get out, too. No one gets left behind, ProSo."
Ben nodded and exited the car, already heading to the fenced lot beside the shop filled with cars. Finn waved to Rose as he headed into the main office. Rose waved back and clambered over the center console and into the driver's seat.
Finn took a deep breath and headed inside. The door was unlocked, though the lights weren't on yet inside. The tv attached to the wall was playing static, and the storewide radio was on a morning talkshow discussing what baby crocodiles were called. Crocklets apparently were the species specific term, though hatchling was also acceptable. Finn turned his focus towards the counter and the office doors. The cash register stood beside an ancient pc, but neither were on nor attended. The doors behind it were closed: one with a window to the dark garage, one claiming to be a restroom, one unmarked, one stating "EMPLOYEES ONLY", and one ajar though dark inside. Finn glanced around the small room, the waiting area, the windows, the entrance, and deciding that there were no other options, he stepped behind the counter and nudged the open door so he could see inside. It was a supply closet, sporting a mop and a bucket and several packages of toilet paper and paper towels and orange cleaner. He shut the door, waiting until he heard the click of the latch.
He suddenly realized that he was being silly. "Hello!" he called. "Anyone here?"
The "EMPLOYEES ONLY" door opened, and flesh Rey flashed a smile and a wave as she closed the door behind her.
"Good morning. How can I help you?"
"Yeah, uh, I've got this, uh, weird thing going on with my...trunk? I was wondering if I could get a quote of how much it'd take to fix it? Maybe have you check it out?"
"No problem, Sweetheart," Rey nodded, flipping the lights on. "It must be a really big problem if you're here before we're even open."
"Oh, sorry about that, I mean, I can come back?"
She shook her head. "No, you're here now. Show me your car, and I'll see what I can do for you, Hun'."
He nodded and led her out to the car. Rose ducked her head as they came out, and Finn made a comment about how he was sure they'd get snow early this year, making Rey look to the sky.
Rose pushed the button to open the trunk, and it sprung open as they reached the back of the car.
"Well, ain't that strange. All by itself, huh?" Rey asked, already leaning in to check the mechanisms and latches.
"All by itself," Finn agreed before trying to shove her into the trunk.
Rey slipped past him, grabbing his arm, and throwing him into the trunk instead. "What do you think you're doing?" she growled.
"Saving your skin." Finn scrambled out of the trunk, brandishing the little crystal. "Plutt is keeping you hostage."
"What in the world..." Rey glared at him, backing away, pulling a long wrench from her work pants, easily wielding it like a club. "I'll give you 10 seconds to get out of here."
"No! Rey! I'm here to rescue you!" He stepped towards her.
"From my job?" She spun the wrench like a baton.
"Are you getting paid?"
"That's none of your concern!"
He finally came even with her and pushed the crystal against her arm.
She gasped and jumped away, dragging Finn along with his grip on the stone. She jerked her arm, making him lose grip on the stone, which was firmly attached to her right bicep. She glared at Finn and rose her arm to swing the wrench at him. She froze mid-swing.
"What the Hell, Finn," Ben called, coming around the building and holding out his hand to make Rey freeze. "I thought you'd have this under control."
"She's strong!"
"Of course she is. She's a mechanic." Ben laughed and came even with them, gently touching the stone and brushing her bare bicep. He looked to her face. He knew her face so intimately already, where each freckle was, where her cheek would dimple when she smiled, where her eyes would squint when she focused. He looked back to the storefront and waved his hand, a glamour forming of Rey at the counter. "I don't know how long that will keep Plutt fooled." He turned his focus back to flesh Rey. He waved a hand over her forehead, and in a swift motion, he caught her unconscious form in his arm, shifting her into a bridal carry, resting her head against his chest, and stepping back to avoid her wrench from falling on his feet. "You wanna grab that, Finn?" He asked, taking Rey to the back seat, a nod of his head to open the door, and set Rey into the seat. He carefully buckled her in and adjusted her head so it was slumped against the seatbelt as if she had fallen asleep on a road trip.
Finn stared at the wrench, wondering what he'd do with it. He dumped it in the trunk and closed the lid.
"Rose, I need your help," Ben called, waving to her and already striding back over to the car lot. Rose scrambled out of the car to follow him.
His car, absolutely mangled, sat near the entrance.
"I need this running. What needs to be repaired?"
Rose set about analyzing the car's condition. "Can you even get in the drivers side?"
Ben waved his hand, and the door reshaped itself.
"And the chassis."
He nodded and the frame reorganized itself with more concentrated movements of his fingers.
She popped the hood and leaned over the engine. She started barking out instructions, and Ben corrected each with a motion of his hand.
"That should be it," Rose announced. "Try to start it up."
Ben nodded, slipping into the driver seat, and he suddenly realized that he did not have the keys. "I'll be right back."
He dashed back to the shop, waving briefly to Finn who was looking around anxiously.
"It's a quarter to, Solo!" He shouted. "We need to get going!"
Ben waved. "You take Rey to Maz's! I've got Rose!"
He ducked inside, pausing at his glamour of Rey busy at the counter.
"I need the keys to the navy BMW." He decided now would be as good a time as any to try it out.
"You got it, Honey," Rey said with a wink, turning to grab a pair off one of many hooks behind her. She tossed them to him, and Ben waved his free hand, toning down her sickly sweet southern pet names. It felt so wrong to hear her talk like that.
He dashed back out, taking note of Finn turning out of the parking lot. He skidded to a stop at his own car, Rose still fiddling with things in the engine.
"Let's start her up!" Ben called, and was already jumping in and jamming his keys into the ignition. It revved beautifully, and then it died. "No!"
"Oh, of course, Plutt's stuck nonsense in here," Rose sighed, leaning back in. "Give me an hour. I'll be able to get this straightened out."
Ben groaned and slammed the door shut. "We don't have an hour!"
"Then use your magic hands to fix the complex mechanics of a BMW engine, ProSo!"
"Fine! Fine! Just tell me what to do!"
Rose started back in, getting her hands straight into the engine, trying to dismantle the sabotage Unkar Plutt had fixed deep inside the engine to create reasons to force repeat customers.
A car turned off the main road and parked itself in front of the building, and Ben peeked out the gate to see if he should be worried. He was worried. It was his mother exiting the car. What was she doing here?
He dashed to her. "Mom?"
"Ben?" She stopped and stared.
"What are you doing here?"
"Maz invited me down for Thanksgiving next week, and I had some extra time, so I came early."
"But what are you doing here?"
"My check engine light came on as I came off the highway. This was the closest shop."
Ben ran a hand through his hair. "Mom, just head back to Maz's. I'll explain later."
"What are you worried about? There's even someone inside," Leia gestured to the window where Rey was fiddling with the computer. "Is that Rey?!"
"Yes, no, kind of. Mom, I just need you to be as far away from here as soon as possible."
"What are you doing here?"
"Trying to get my car."
"Trying to? It's been a month. How has it not been repaired yet?"
"Just go!"
"Alright, alright, I'm leaving, but if I end up on the side of the road because you're being a delinquent-."
"I know! It'll be fine. We'll get your car taken care of, anywhere but here!"
Leia frowned at him but finally got back in her car to head out. Ben relaxed, barely, and headed back to Rose.
"Maz invited my mother for Thanksgiving," he informed, trying to adjust his plans to accommodate his mother's arrival.
"What was she doing here?" Rose asked, waist deep into his engine.
"Check engine light came on. Do you mind checking out her car when we get back to Maz's?"
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, ProSo."
Ben paced between the lot gate, where he could see the road and the parking lot, and his car, where Rose was getting his car in working condition.
A car came into the parking lot, and Ben stood at the gate, watching their movements.
The car parked, and a man exited and headed inside. Ben watched the man interact with Fake Rey, making sure that things were playing out properly. He hoped he had given the glamour enough intelligence that she wouldn't draw too much unwanted attention. The pair exited the building to check the car. Rey squatted in front of a tire, checking the treads.
"We're ready to go, ProSo! Start her up!"
Ben obeyed, dashing over to try again. He shoved the keys in the ignition. He held his breath, waiting for the car to start, and he relaxed once it rumbled to life.
"Get in, Rose! Time to go home!"
Rose hopped into the passenger seat, beaming.
"Thank you. I really appreciate it," Ben said, turning to exit the scrap lot.
Just as he flipped around, a large rusty work truck pulled into the parking lot. Unkar Plutt squeezed out of the truck and waddled out to the vehicle waiting for the garage door to open.
Ben swore.
"Just go, Ben!" Rose squeaked. "He can't hurt us at Maz's, right?"
"He hasn't noticed us, yet, Rose. Stay still."
The garage door finally opened all the way, and the Fake Rey was waving for the man to drive his car inside. Plutt waved to Rey and waddled into the building. The moment he was out of sight, Ben punched on the gas, and the car left skid marks on the parking lot as he turned into the road.
"Did we just do that?" Rose whispered. "Did we just steal a car?"
Ben stared at the road for a moment before bursting into laughter. "It's my car! No, we didn't steal my own car!"
Rose laughed in return.
"Don't relax yet. We still need to get to Maz's." Though Ben's voice was solemn, his face was as bright as Rose had ever seen him.
They turned into the long driveway, making sure to park to the side so that his mother's car could get out when she needed to. He and Rose took note of the rental pulled all the way to the backyard gate as they headed into the front door. The front room was a strange combination of company. There was Maz, of course, pouring mugs of hot cocoa. Leia already was cradling a steaming mug. Finn had Flesh Rey leaning against his shoulder, still unconscious. Real Rey had her place on an ottoman in front of the empty fireplace. Paige and Han were hovering near Real Rey. Poe Dameron was accepting a cup from Maz and backing into an overstuffed chair. Bebe the cat perked up when Ben and Rose entered and dashed to greet them.
"Poe?"
"Hello to you, too, Solo," Poe nodded, blowing on the steam escaping his mug.
Ben worriedly looked to his mother.
"No, not her. Someone who should have been dead a long time ago."
Leia raised an eyebrow at Poe but quickly turned back to Ben. "You told me that you'd fill me in on what was going on."
Ben glanced at Poe, but he took a mug and a seat and started into laying out as much as he could about their plan to consolidate Rey and her body and to free her from Unkar Plutt.
Leia nodded along. "I see. And you're going to Luke for this?"
"I can't go to anyone else."
"When are you planning on going to Luke?'
"Over Thanksgiving break. I hadn't planned on you joining us. It gives me the time to get up to him and back before class starts up again."
Leia gave a mischievous smile to Maz. "It sounds like we'll have to have Thanksgiving early then."
Maz nodded, already hobbling to find a notepad to start on a shopping list.
"What are we going to do with Sleeping Beauty here?" Finn asked.
Ben nodded and stood. "I think we can keep her up in the green room with the plants. She'll be out for a while." He picked her up again and easily carried her up the stairs.
"He is packing some muscle," Rose sighed.
"Rose!" Finn groaned.
