It wasn't until later that night that Harry processed what exactly his professors had been talking about. Sure, he had realized that they had been talking about Hermione when he had heard her name mentioned, but Harry had just concluded that Snape was angry because Lupin wasn't supposed to have told anybody. But as he kept thinking, he remembered something that Snape had said; he had asked Remus if he had left Snape out of the story. Harry's brows furrowed as he lay there, staring at the ceiling of his four poster as if it had all of the answers written in the woodwork. Harry tossed and turned, trying to figure out just why Snape had said that, and then it hit him.
How could he have been so stupid? How could he have forgotten that Snape had been at school with his parents and now he was at school with Hermione. 'So, something happened with Snape and Hermione, but what?' Harry tried to think of all of the possible things. At first he had thought that Hermione might have possibly done something horrible to Snape, but quickly dismissed the thought. No matter if he was Seventeen or Seventy, Snape was still her professor, which meant she respected him. He then began to wonder if maybe Snape had done something horrible to her, but again, that thought was quickly dismissed. Something in the way Snape had asked the question pointed to something deeper and potentially more embarrassing for Snape, then he remembered.
It was the middle sixth year, and Harry had begun taking Occulmency lessons with Snape again. It was getting late and Harry was tired as anything, but Snape kept pushing him. At the moment, Snape was moving around in his mind and Harry had to throw him off, but no spells were coming to mind and he was too tired to put up his mental block, so he did the one thing he could think of. Harry raised his wand and shouted, "Legimens!" Harry hadn't expected anything to happen, and apparently, neither had Snape, because just before he put up his mental wall's, Harry saw Snape in the back corner of the library, Hermione's normal spot, sitting quite close to some bushy haired girl, studying obviously. He hadn't had a chance to see the face of the girl, her face was down and her hair was covering the part that Harry could have seen, but before she could raise her head, Snape had put up his mental walls and Harry had left his mind. Harry didn't understand why, at the time, Snape was furious about him seeing that memory, but now it made sense.
The girl had been Hermione. That's why Snape had been so angry, something had happened between him and Hermione, just not what anyone would have thought. Anger coursed through his veins, not only was Hermione not with him, but she was flitting about with her two professors and spending time with his parents!
Seething, Harry tried to calm his mind and get some rest; Lord knows he would need it, for tomorrow he would talk to Snape if it was the last thing he did.
Hermione walked into dinner the next day sulkily. It was the full moon that night and she was worried about Remus. He had been gone all day to accentuate the point that he had gotten sick, and Hermione was missing him like crazy. It didn't help matters that she had a meeting with Snape tonight, at least, she thought she did. He hadn't really said anything when she had asked him to come again tonight. 'Oh well, with or without him, I'll be able to get a lot more done tonight now that Remus is occupied.' She grabbed her seat next to Lily and placed a piece of chicken on her plate and began stabbing at it angrily. Hermione had no idea how she had suddenly gone from sulky to angry, but she had, and she was taking it out on some poor chicken leg. It seemed that Lily had taken notice of this because her hand was soon on Hermione's shoulder. "Hermione, are you alright?"
Hermione put her knife down as she had now mutilated the poor chicken beyond repair or recognition. "Yeah I'm fine, just worried about Remus."
Lily nodded and pulled Hermione into a quick hug. "Hey Lil, I think I'm going to go to the library and get a head start, I'm not really that hungry anyway."
Hermione grabbed her pack and walked out of the Great Hall, missing the worried look from Lily and the other boys. She quickly walked into the library, not bothering to nod at the librarian, and quickly settled down at her table. She had returned to her sulky state as she saw the sun start to go down in the sky from one of the windows by her table. Sighing, she put her pack down at the table and gathered some more books for their project, not taking near as much time as she had the previous day. When she got back to the table, she put down the armful of books and looked at her watch. Severus should be here any minute. Deciding to not wait for him to arrive, Hermione sat down and pulled out her parchment, quill and ink, and grabbed the book from the top of the stack, searching the index for Jamie Schaffer. Two minutes later she saw someone walking towards her table and knew it was Severus. Without a word he sat himself down, took out his quill and parchment, and took the book from the top of the stack. Hermione looked back up at him, "Hello Severus."
She watched as Severus simply looked up at her for a moment, and then returned to his work. Hermione sighed and tried to concentrate on finding new information, but her brain just wouldn't focus. All she could do was watch the sun fall outside, ushering in the full moon. She wished there was something she could do to help Remus. The full mood was just coming up and she knew that he would be transforming. A shiver ran down her spine as she thought of all the pain he must be in. She was pulled out of her thoughts when she heard Severus clear his throat from across the table. "If you don't mind, I suggest you stop day dreaming and get back to work."
Hermione began to blush slightly out of embarrassment, but kept a stern look on her face, "Forgive me, but I have other things on my mind at the moment."
Severus let out a short laugh, "Worried about your poor boyfriend? Don't worry; he has his friends to help him tonight."
Hermione looked at him, a shocked expression coming over her face. "How do you know about him?"
Snape's lips curled into a familiar sneer as his voiced dripped with sarcasm, "Oh, you haven't heard? I would have thought they would have been bragging to you. Last year you friend's thought it would be funny to lure me into the shrieking shack just as Lupin was transforming, if potter hadn't suddenly grown a conscience, I wouldn't have left."
Hermione covered her mouth in shock and horror, surely Remus hadn't known about it, he couldn't have. "I'm so sorry Severus; they should have never done that."
"You think so?"
Hermione felt horrible for the boy sitting across from her. He had been put through so much already, and she knew that they only got worse from there; she knew what he would become, eventually, that is, unless he already was. Hermione had to hold back tears, tonight was not a good night for her emotions. She felt a lump rise in her throat and she quickly hid her face behind one of the bigger books, pretending to copy down notes. It just would not do for Severus to see her crying. No doubt he would throw another insult at her, besides, Hermione hated to cry in front of anyone. She quickly pulled herself together and got back to work, their project was due in a couple weeks after all, and they had so much work to do.
Hermione looked at the clock a bit later and found that it was almost curfew. "Severus, it's almost curfew, just so you know."
She watched as he looked at the clock and began to pack up without a word. "How about same time tomorrow again."
"Fine."
Hermione watched as he finished up packing and left the library once more, she didn't know why, but she wished that he was a bit more social. It was driving her mad that he would hardly talk, even though she understood his desire to get everything done in a timely order, it would still be nice to have a civil conversation with him while she still had a chance. God only knows that once she gets back home everything will go back to normal, and she will be nothing more than the Gryffindor know-it-all.
Home, she had completely forgotten about home. What with classes and Lily and Remus, she had forgotten that she eventually would have to leave, that is, if she could leave. She started thinking about Harry and Ron, wondering what they are doing without her, if they are even passing their classes. Laughing a bit to herself, she found that she didn't really miss them as much as she probably should. Sighing she began to clean up, and resolved to go to Dumbledore to find out how things were going with her time turner before bed, it wasn't as if Remus would be waiting up for her tonight.
