Chapter 24
Practice makes Perfect
Elizabeth woke up the next morning to the sound of rain outside, one of her favorite sounds. She was excited for what was going to go on that day. This was her day,she was going to the merchantile to finally get the stuff to finish the recipes that Molly had given her. Nothing was going to stop her today from getting to visit .
She fixed herself some eggs, bacon and toast for breakfast. She brushed her teeth, got dressed and was all ready to go. She headed down the street headed for the merchantile and went inside. She started to look around and knew that she needed to get a bunch of things. She gots lots of veggies, potatoes and milk. She also got a roast, chicken, some ground meat and a couple of other odds and edds. She was paying for her groceries when Clara,Frank's daughter came in and she was looking for noticed that 's delivery boy,Jesse was watching Clara as she shopped. It looked like he might be a little sweet on her. She remembered what Abigail had told her about Jesse, how he was part of the Garrison gang, and he did 6 months of prison time when they were caught trying to rob a bank.
She paid for her groceries, carried what she could and headed for home. had arranged Jesse to deliver the rest of her groceries this afternoon. Elizabeth was so anxious to spend this rainy afternoon at home by herself. As soon as she got into the house, she put all of the groceries away. Before she got cooking, she decided to call her mom.
"Hi mom,are you?" She hadn't talked to them in awhile or anyone in Hamilton for that matter.
"We're doing good sweetheart,we miss you so very much! Your father isn't here right now,but I will definately tell him that u called.
They talked for about an hour. Elizabeth hung up her cell phone and realized how much she missed her family in Hamilton. She then remembered that she could always take a trip back home for a visit. Maybe she thought she should take up her mother's offer to come home for Thanksgiving, which was a few short weeks away. She was planning on giving the children the day before and the day after the holiday off of school,so that would mean that she would have 5 days of vacation to spend at home. That would most definately be something that she would have to think about. This did make her feel a little better.
She heard a knock on the door, she went to go answer it. It was Jesse, with the rest of her groceries. It was almost dinner time, so she thought she would try her luck with the chicken pot pie. After all she wanted to make it before but she didn't have the ingredients. She cut up all her veggies, made the gravy, but making a pie crust was very challenging. The first time that she made the dough,it was to dry,and the second time that she made it,it was to wet. By the 4th time, she seemed to get the hang of getting it just right, where she could roll it out. She put it all together and got ready to put it in the oven. However she did remembe to cut slits in the top of the crust so that the steam could escape. She set the timer and kept an eye on it so it wouldn't burn. Soon delicious smells started to fill the house,so she took it out and let it rest. If she tried to eat it right now,she would burn her face off ha ha. She decide to wait for about 15 min,and then she cut into it. It wasn't horrible but the veggies were still a little crunchy.
Oh! she thought,I didn't give the carrots and potatoes a chance to get a head start on cooking before I put them in the crust. Molly did show her how to do that, and she had forgotten that detail.
"Ok,let's try this again. Practice makes perfect. Can't ever try this too much ha ha."she said out loud. She cut the carrots and potatoes in small cues and put them in the gravey to let them cook for a litte she put the in the pit. Yet again...mouth watering smells filled the more, she took out the pie and let it rest for a little bit. She then took out a portion and gave it a was really yummy! She wanted to try the recipe for bread that Molly had given her,but it was kind of late to start another project today.
She was finishing up her dinner and started to clean up when she heard a knock on the door. She got up to go shee who was her at dinner had stopped rainy but it was still kind of drizzling.
"I'm coming",she said as she hurried to the door, and was surprised to see Jack standing there.
Jack couldn't help but start to laugh at her had no idea what he was laughing at. Elizabeth looked so adorable. She had flour in her hair,on her nose and all over her clothes.
"May I asked you something? She nodded. Did you get any flour in the bowl at all?"
"Um oops ,I guess I didn't."Elizabeth looked down at herself and couldn't help but laugh at herself too. She looked back at Jack
"I actually came to ask you something, but if you don't want to,it's ok. Would it be ok if you went to church tomorrow, because I'm going too?" Jack asked,he seemed to be stuttering a little bit
"Yes,I'll be there." Elizabeth was trying not to laugh. She knew he wasn't making sense with his sentence,so she decided to be patient with him.
"No wait, that's not what I came out wrong. What I wanted to say is,would you like to go to church with me tomorrow?"Jack was nervous but this time he got his point across.
"Jack I would love to go to church with you." She had always wanted to go with him,but of course she couldn't ask him. Plus she didn't know if he liked her company or not.
"Good,he said softly,I'll come by for you about 8:15 if that's ok? She nodded in complete agreement with him. Alright I'll see you tomorrow morning then."
"See you then,Elizabeth said as she closed the door,I'll see you then."
