Alex's P.O.V
"So, vampirism was a form of protection?" I asked her as we walked down the stairs. I hadn't seen that coming.
"What else would it be?" She asked as if it was the only answer.
"I always thought it was a curse," I stated.
"My parents only saw a way of keeping their children alive." She said.
"Yeah, but why stay, if they were so afraid of the werewolves? Why not...leave?" Elena asked.
"Pride...My father didn't want to run anymore. He wanted to fight and be superior to the wolves. Where they could bite, we had to bite harder. Where they had speed, we had to be faster. Agility, strength, senses. And since Ayana wouldn't help, my father put the burden in my mother's hands." She explained
"In her hands? How could she do anything?" Elena asked.
"Because my mother was also a witch," Rebekah answered.
"What?" I asked.
"The witch of the Original Family. The Original Witch?" She said, and we walked into the library. I sat down on the couch. Elena came and sat next to me while Rebekah looked through the shelves.
"Where do you guys keep you're the best vintage?" Rebekah asked me. I walked over to the bookshelf and pulled away three books to reveal a bottle of wine.
"Here try this. It's our family's specialty, circa 1860, Potenza, Italy." I said as I handed her the bottle and sat back down on the couch with Elena.
"But if your mother was a witch, then…" Elena started, but Rebekah cut her off.
"Am I?" She asked. "No, a witch is nature's servant; a vampire is an abomination of nature. You can either be one or the other, never both. My mother did this for us. She did not turn."
"How did you turn?" I asked her.
"Our mother called upon the sun for life, and the ancient white oak tree, one of nature's eternal objects, for immortality. That night, my father offered us wine laced with blood. And then he drove his sword through our hearts." I instantly thought of my dream. The stab wound in Klaus's chest, now it made sense. But the fact that Klaus's father killed him triggered me to have flashes of my father killing me.
"He killed you?" Elena asked in a shocked whisper.
"And he wasn't delicate about it either," Rebekah said. She takes a bottle of wine, breaks its neck off with one motion of her hand, and throws the piece of glass into the fireplace. "We had to drink more blood to complete the ritual." The memory of me killing Erin ran through my head.
"It was euphoric! The feeling of power was indescribable...but the witch Ayana was right about the consequences. The spirits turned on us, and nature fought back...For every strength, there would be a weakness...The sun became our enemy. It kept us indoors for weeks...And though my mother found a solution, there were other problems...Neighbors who had opened their homes to us could now keep us out. Flowers at the base of the white oak burned and prevented compulsion. And the spell decreed that the tree that gave us life could also take it away...so we burned it to the ground. But the darkest consequence was something my parents never anticipated...Hunger. Blood...had made us reborn and it was the blood that we craved above all else. We could not control it...And with that, the predatory species was born…" Rebekah explained.
"So, why did Mikael start hunting Klaus?" Elena asked her.
"When Nik made his first human kill, it triggered his werewolf gene. With that, he became my father's greatest shame." Rebekah stated.
"Yeah. Elijah told me this part of the story. Your mother had had an affair with one of the werewolf villagers. Klaus wasn't his son." Elena said. Just like I wasn't my father's daughter.
"She tried to make it right. She put the hybrid curse on Nik to suppress his werewolf side, and then she turned her back on him. But Mikael's greatest weakness as a human was his pride. As a vampire, that was magnified. He went on a rampage and killed half the village. Then he came home and killed her." She explained.
"Mikael killed your mother?" Elena whispered again.
"He said she broke his heart so he would break hers. He tore it from her chest as Nik watched. After our mothers' death, we sore to stick together as one...Always and forever." Rebekah said and I touched my locket. For Eternity.
"Just the three of you?" I said and Rebekah looked at me. We shared a look, she seemed offended but ashamed at the same time.
"Always and forever...even though he locked you in a coffin for ninety years?" Elena asked and I looked at her. You're playing fire right now, Elena.
"We're vampires. Our emotions are heightened. I'm stubborn, Elijah moral, and Nik...Nik has no tolerance for those who disappoint him. Over a thousand years as a family we've all made that mistake at least once. I've made it several times." She said.
"But you still love him?" Elena asked as she stood up from the couch. I didn't say anything, knowing where Rebekah was coming from.
"He's my brother. And I'm immortal. Should I spend eternity alone instead? You've heard the story, it's time to go." Elena opened her mouth to argue. "I said leave, Elena! I don't know what you're up to, but I'm no longer playing along." Rebekah yelled.
"I'm just looking for one good reason why we shouldn't wake Mikael," Elena said and I looked down. She already told us why.
"And I've given you a thousand! But you will anyway. I know you both," Rebekah glared at me. "Want him to help you kill my brother, I'm not stupid." She sneered.
"It's no secret that I want Klaus dead. He has a hold over Stefan's life, and over ours." Elena argued and Rebekah towered over her.
"Do what you need. Wake Mikael at your own peril. But make no mistake, if you come after my brother, I will rip you apart. And I get my temper from my father. Now leave!" She yelled at Elena and Elena walked out of the door. Rebekah looked back at me and I just sat there, letting the silence between us thicken. My phone vibrated and I looked at it to see it was Klaus again. I ignored it for now and looked back at Rebekah.
"What happened to Kol and Finn?" I asked her.
"Why do you care?" Rebekah asked me.
"I stayed and listen to your stories for answers. So far all I know is that we shouldn't wake Mikael - which I completely understand from personal experience. The other thing I learned was that Elijah, Klaus, and you have made a promise that lasted for a thousand years, but it excludes Kol and Finn because you never mentioned them in your story." Rebekah didn't seem happy that I was bringing them up. "Not to mention when I asked you about it a few seconds ago you looked ashamed. But their names were in the cave meaning they were your other siblings, or at least part of your family, with whoever Esther is." I paused for a second and asked, "Actually who is she because you didn't mention her as well?" Rebekah didn't answer and I waited for her to snap at me, or do something, but she didn't. "I'm not leaving 'till you answer me," I told her.
Rebekah and I stayed like that for a long time. Staring each other down waiting for the other person to blink. My phone buzzed for the second time within five minutes, and I knew it was Klaus calling me. I didn't answer him, but it seemed to get Rebekah's attention.
"That's probably Klaus," Rebekah said. "I would answer if I were you, he doesn't like to be kept waiting." I sighed at her, knowing she was right and that I wasn't going to get any answers out of her. I picked up my phone which told me I had missed Klaus's two calls. I stood up and began to walk to my room when Rebekah spoke up. "You still care for him." I turned to her.
"What?" I asked her, wondering what she meant.
"About Klaus." She clarified.
"I don't care about Klaus." I declared.
"You can deny it all you want," Rebekah smiled. "But in the end, he will always run back to you, and if anything these last 90 years have proven just that." I looked back at her confused.
"And why does this prove I care about him?" I asked her.
"Because you let him run to you...Because you want him in your life." Rebekah said. "I can see it in your eyes whenever his name is mentioned and I'll never understand why you would care for someone like my brother." She then turned around and I watched as she walked back to the drink cart.
Soon, I made my way up the stairs, not wanting to be in the same room as Rebekah anymore, and walked into my room. Buzzing for the 3rd time tonight, even though it was the 4th time he called me, I looked down at Klaus's name on my phone and realized that maybe he could answer some of my questions. I answered and held the phone to my ear.
" Hello, love. " He seemed cheerful.
"We found the cave where your family story is literally carved into the walls," I told him and he hummed.
" I'm assuming you have questions, " Klaus said.
"A few, Rebekah answered most of them when she explains your family's past," I replied. "Who are Kol and Finn? Rebekah mention Elijah and you, but not them." I heard Klaus sit down on a chair or a bed.
" Finn is our oldest brother and Kol was the second-youngest since my youngest brother was Henrik, " Klaus answered.
"Then why didn't Rebekah mention them?" I asked.
" Well, Finn always hated our vampiric ways. When Mikael would be searching for us, Finn would always try to lead him to us. "
"So you daggered him," I said.
" It was the only way to keep Mikael from finding us. As for Kol, he was always the most reckless and ego-maniac of us all. He never had control and would kill hundreds of people, to the point that if he continued he would catch Mikael's attention, so I daggered him as well. " Klaus explained.
"Ok," I said. I was unsure about Mikael begin the only reason Klaus daggered his siblings. "Then who's Esther?"
" Our mother. " He answered. " I'm assuming you know the story from there. "
"Why me?" I asked him suddenly.
" I'm not sure I understand what you mean, sweetheart? " He asked me.
"Why be obsessed with me since the 1920s?" I asked him as I sat down on my bed and sighed. "I'm not special or important. Why not go find some other girl and be with her?
" Well, darling that's because no other girl could compare to you. " He answered and I felt my cheeks go red. " Was there anything else you wanted to talk about? "
"Mikael." I bit my lip before continuing. "I'm assuming you don't want to talk about him or even think about him, and I get that, I really do. And after what Rebekah told me about him today, I know the last thing we should do is wake him up." I admitted. "Sad thing is, Stefan and Damon are too wrapped up in Elena to remember what our own father was like. To remember that our dad was exactly like Mikael." I bit my lip again, trying to gather the right words to say to him. "I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you can convince me, Klaus, not to wake up Mikael...I will do my best to stop my brothers." I offered.
" Well- " His voice sounded more vulnerable. " He doesn't just want my family dead, he wants all vampires wiped from existence. " Klaus said.
"Do you have anything else?" I asked him. "Because my brothers won't believe that. They'll just think you're saying that in order to get me on your side and I can compare Rebekah's story to our lives, but it probably won't work. Damon and Stefan aren't exactly the people who learn from their past." Klaus didn't say anything and I frowned. "Please, Klaus. If you know anything. Tell me. I'm trying to help you." He still didn't say anything and I sighed sadly. "Well, goodnight Klaus," I said to him, crestfallen that he wouldn't answer.
And just as I was about to pull the phone away from my ear, Klaus whispered in a subdued voice, " Goodnight Alexandria. " before he hung up the phone.
