Chapter 20
Kaili had been in a drug-induced coma for the past week or so, allowing the surgeons to perform reconstructive surgeries. This included a natural-looking prosthetic hand, multiple skin grafts to correct the scar on his face, and follicle transplants so his hair could grow back normally. After that week, they started him on physical therapy and gentle exercise. Between the sessions, he slept. The days started to blend into each other.
The first thing he heard that morning was a familiar voice calling his name. "Kaili?"
Kaili's eyes blinked open. "Shang?"
"Hey brother." Shang squeezed Kaili's prosthetic hand, and was relieved to feel Kaili could do the same. "Are you almost ready to go back home?"
"I'll be ready when the doctors clear me. They've been really great." Kaili smiled. "So have Kim and Ron. They brought me a combo meal from Bueno Nacho, and it was actually pretty tasty! I can see why Ron practically lives there."
Shang chuckled.
A doctor walked in to administer a check-up. He asked a few questions, tested how Kaili's prosthetic worked, and checked the healing of the skin grafts and progress of the follicle transplants.
"Well, Kaili, everything looks good. You're free to go back home tomorrow. I understand Mulan and Shang will be coming with you."
"There's one more thing we have to do before we leave…" said Kaili, a smile crossing his face.
"This isn't the wedding I expected I would have." said Kim. Mulan was pinning Kim's hair into a half-up bun. She tucked purple and yellow orchids into the bun, and gave her a bouquet that matched.
"I'm marrying my childhood best friend, with a legend as my maid of honor… but without my family present." KIm dabbed a tear, hoping not to mess up her makeup. She had hoped that her family would be at her wedding, but since the chapel was on GJ premises, civilians weren't allowed.
"I know, Kim." Mulan tried to comfort her friend. "Who knows, miracles happen every day. Like the portal that brought the dream team together in the first place…"
"The pendants…"
"How you and Ron came to my aid, back in my time…"
"Witnessing you and Shang marry despite all the odds…"
"How you sang at the Li-Fa wedding…"
"All we've accomplished, we've accomplished as a team… as friends." finished Kim.
"Kim!" whispered a young female voice with a Western accent, coming from outside the door. It was Joss, who had since been inducted into the College Agents' program.
"What is it Joss?" asked Kim.
"I got a surprise for you."
Kim smoothed the sparkling, trailing skirt on her white dress one more time. The sparkles on her dress were purple and gold, scattered across the skirt and sweetheart bodice. She stood up and draped the sheer veil over her face.
When she heard the ushers telling everyone where to sit, Kim walked out… and was met with the best surprise ever.
"Dad! Mom! Nana!"
"Kimmie-cub!" Kim's family pulled her into a group hug
"How did you get in?"
"Dr. Director gave us special permission." explained Nana. "She couldn't let her best agents celebrate alone."
Dr. James Possible walked Kim down the aisle, joyful tears flowing. Ron got weak in the knees when he saw just how beautiful his bride looked.
"Hang in there, Ron." whispered Shang. "If I can handle the sight of Mulan in armor, Kim in a wedding dress shouldn't be a problem."
Ron lovingly moved the veil back, revealing Kim's brilliant smile. "I love you KP…"
"I love you too, Ron…"
Mulan let a quiet "awww!" escape her lips.
The GJ chaplain had decided to do a blended ceremony, with a mix of Jewish and Christian traditions. Out of the corner of his eye, Ron saw his parents and his little sister Hana seated in the chairs.
After all the traditions were fulfilled, the chaplain turned to the audience: "I proclaim this couple… Husband and Wife!"
Kim and Ron kissed, as they had so many times before. But somehow, this kiss was better than all the others. They were entering the next chapter of their lives.
After the ceremony, Mulan, Shang, Mushu (who was back to his usual size), and Kaili wished Kim and Ron all the best.
"Hey Kim?" asked Mulan.
"Yes?"
"If you and Ron decide to have children… promise you'll tell them about our adventures."
"Oh, our kids will have the best bedtime stories!" Ron boasted.
Kim smiled - that was her husband! - but then her eyes glistened with tears. "I know you guys have to leave soon."
Mulan hugged Kim. "I'll never forget you, Kim… I promise that we'll be back someday."
Shang ended up pulling Ron into a strong hug, along with Kaili. Kim and Mulan joined, followed by Mushu and Rufus.
It was time to say goodbye. But the team knew something special, a truth that would keep them going despite the distance and time. Goodbye was not forever. Farewell was not the end. In their hearts and memories, there, the dream team would always be.
A shining wind opened a hole in the scenery. Behind it was the Li-Fa family compound. Mulan, Shang, Kaili, and Mushu took one last look back, one last goodbye. Then the hole sucked them in - and closed.
"I can't believe they're gone…" said Kim, looking at where the Portal had brought their friends home.
"But never forgotten." reassured Ron.
Kim sighed. "Well, we can chalk it up to experience."
Ron sat and listened. He was confused. But when Kim spoke again, it all made sense...
"We never would have had these adventures if it weren't for the dream team. No matter what happened to us, we acted as one. And because of that, our teamwork is assured."
***THE END***
