Chapter 34
STEVE'S POV
He didn't sleep at all that night, instead, watching Kayden as she slept. Steve rarely needed to sleep, he could go a very long time without it. It was something he refused to give up when he had changed. He enjoyed sleeping, it was the only time he had a break. He kept his focus on the soft rise and fall of her chest as she slept.
He was scared. The fact that he was, irritated him. Fear was always a good thing, but he didn't want to be scared of losing her. Just like Peggy. It was still raw in his mind, and he hadn't even grieved her properly. He didn't want to go through it again. Things had been so good since they had defeated Ultron, until The Accords. He wanted to go back to it, but knew that was selfish of him. He needed to focus on here and now. Things weren't that bad. She was alive, and so was he. Things would be different now, but that didn't mean it had to be terrible.
As the sun began to rise, Steve closed his eyes, giving the illusion that he was asleep. Kayden shifted just a few moments later, and he heard her breathing change. She came out of sleep slowly, but he knew the moment she was fully alert. It never took her long to come to that point, being the predator that she was. That and he was sure she never wanted to be caught unaware again.
"You didn't sleep," she said flatly, and his body shook in a silent chuckle.
"No..." he admitted.
"I told you I wasn't dying," she muttered, pushing herself out of bed.
He didn't move, knowing her routine. She went into the bathroom to take care of business, and when she came back, she crawled back into bed with him. He moved his arm so that she could slide against his side. He ran a few fingers through her freshly brushed hair, making her sigh. He continued the motion for several minutes, letting it relax them both.
"You know me," he finally said.
"The man who can hide everything from everyone but me," she mused.
"Yes," he answered, not denying it. "That and perhaps it's nice to be myself..."
"I'm honored to be that person you can do that with," she whispered, pressing her head against his chest.
"Same to you," he smiled, glancing down at her. "How are you feeling?"
"Fine," she replied. "Hungry."
"Of course you are," Steve chuckled. "Well, come on then. I don't need you starving."
He got to his feet, and got ready for the day while she changed into something a little more comfortable. When he walked out of the bathroom fully dressed, he crossed the room and grabbed her. She instantly leaned into him, and he pressed his lips to hers.
Seeing Kayden on her feet, and feeling more sure of herself than yesterday helped ease the worry in his heart. She would be okay. They walked down and met up with everyone, and he leaned back and watched as she allowed Wanda, Sam and Clint hug her. Scott had gone on his way the other night, and Steve knew it was only a matter of time before others would move off too.
"Where is Scott?" Kayden asked, as they sat down to eat something.
"He left last night," Clint replied, leaning back.
"Ah," she replied, and they all happily dug into their breakfast.
KAYDEN'S POV
After breakfast, I found myself walking out to the balcony. Clint had quietly excused himself after, and I was worried. He looked at me with a smile, and bumped his shoulder on mine.
"You leaving too?" I asked, and he sighed.
"Well...I thought about it, and I don't know when I'm going to see Laura….my kids….so I figured I would take my chance. We aren't as big a threat as you and Cap, D. It would be better if you two fell off the face of the earth for awhile. Go somewhere nice...where they can't capture you. This isn't over...grab the peace that you can."
"You know it too then, huh?" I asked, leaning against the railing.
"I think we all do. It's why we're all splitting," Clint replied. "Wanda said you made a point, before. When the Accords first came up. The stone in Vision's head. You said there are more...and that who ever is after them, they won't stop."
"No, I don't think so," I agreed quietly.
"Well then," Clint hummed, glancing at me. "Don't think about us. Worry about what you need to do, and we'll do the same. Grab some peace, D. Cap...Cap deserves it too. He needs it."
Turning toward him when he hopped off the railing, I let him pull me into a hug. I hugged him tightly, and kept what ever emotion that wanted to spill over locked in. He gave me a tight squeeze, before finally leaving me. I watched him until I couldn't see him anymore. When I was alone, I looked down to see that Steve was standing outside alone.
T'Challa had arrived, only for a short time, so I watched him walk out to talk to Steve. I didn't hear much of his conversation, but I knew what they were discussing. We did need to leave. If we were going to go to Alaska, or stay somewhere around here, that remained to be seen.
Standing there for a moment, I thought over the trip to Alaska. Steve wasn't going to want to go hide in Alaska. Even being a fugitive, he was going to still want to do something. He helped people, it was just who he was. It was easy for me to want to go and hide away for however long I needed. That's what I was used to doing. Hiding away if it got bad. We hadn't truly had to deal with that since I met him and the others. Now things were completely different.
"Now who's thinking too hard?"
Turning around in surprise, I looked at Steve as he came to join me. Sighing in irritation, I turned back toward the railing and looked over the jungle. He came to stand beside me, his arm coming around to pull me against him.
"Care to tell me?" he asked, and I looked down.
"Asking you to hide away from the world while there are still people that need help is wrong," I sighed. "I can't ask you to do what I would have done. You help people, it's who you are. Hiding is what I do, not what you do."
"What are you saying?"
"We're not going to Alaska," I answered, turning toward him. "We'll go somewhere else, figure out what we can do from there."
"Well I'm glad you decided on staying. I have a few things we can do to pass the time."
Turning my head in surprise, I looked right at someone I didn't think I'd see so soon. Natasha stood there in the doorway, giving me a slight smile. I wasn't sure what went across my expression, but I saw hers shift only the slightest. It was enough to have me leaving Steve's side and going over to her. She reached out to me the moment I reached for her, and I hugged her tightly.
"I am so glad you are okay," I murmured.
"I heard you weren't for awhile. I'm glad to see you standing," she replied, and we leaned back from each other.
"I had a great man and group of people come to the rescue," I answered. "I am back to normal for the most part."
"Good," she said softly. "I'm sorry I wasn't there."
"I think we've all had our fair share of problems," Steve added, walking over.
"Yes," Nat nodded, as we let go of each other. "We have. So are we ready to go undercover?"
"I think so," I nodded, and Steve did as well.
We left after Sam and Wanda were ready to go. We'd figure out what needed to be done once we were in the air. Part of me was excited to see what would happen next, and the other part was wary. We'd be on the run, not being able to stay in one place too long. It was something I had done before, and I knew Nat was good at disappearing.
"Ready?" Steve asked, coming to join me.
"As much as I can be," I mused, looking at him.
Reaching out, he pressed his fingers to my cheek and sighed softly to himself. Shifting my stance, I leaned into him quietly and gave him a kiss on the cheek before stepping back. We loaded up the jet, and soon, were saying good bye to Wakanda.
"Thank you," I said quietly, as T'Challa pulled me in for a hug. "For everything."
"I am glad we were able to help you," he murmured. "You are always welcome here. All of you."
"Thank you," Steve nodded.
Leaving the secret nation was pretty cool, and I sat quietly next to Wanda as Steve took over flying. I had no idea where we were going, but I knew we'd all be all right.
