Drew sat in the car with his arms crossed, "I don't want to go."

Jay groaned loudly, "Come on, bud. You're going to be late."

Hailey went around the truck and jumped into the seat next to Drew, "It'll be fine."

"I don't understand why you can't be there," Drew sighed and hit his legs.

"Because it's a swim class for kids," Jay said, "Not adults."

"I don't care," Drew shrugged.

"Parents definitely will," Jay rubbed his face, "Let's go. Out."

"No," Drew said.

Jay closed his eyes and stepped away from the truck.

Hailey sighed, "Drew, you're being difficult."

"I don't want to go," Drew whined.

"It's not a choice, you need to learn how to swim and you need to make friends," Hailey set her hand on Drew's seatbelt.

"Don't do it," Drew whispered.

Hailey shook her head and clicked the button to release the seatbelt.

"No, no," Drew fought against her hands as he tried to connect the seatbelt again.

Jay reached in the car and picked him up, "We're going."

"No, no," Drew kicked his legs, "Put me down"

"I will put you down in the pool," Jay said while carrying Drew over his shoulder into the school.

Hailey tilted her head back and counted to ten before grabbing the small bag with Drew's towel and dry clothes and following them.

"I'll buy you ice-cream," Jay was saying as he opened the big doors, "We will go right after this to buy ice-cream."

"I don't want ice-cream," Drew argued and pushed against Jay's shoulder, "I want to be on the ground."

"No," Jay repeated and tightened his hold.

Hailey walked inside with them, "Drew, you're not even giving it a chance."

"It doesn't deserve a chance," Drew said.

Jay ignored him and looked at the two high school students sitting at a table outside the pool, "This is Drew. It's his first day."

The girl scanned the list, "Halstead?"

"Yeah," Jay tried prying Drew off him.

"That's not my last name," Drew said quickly.

Jay sighed, "I know, but you're our foster kid, do you want me to change it back?"

Drew bit his lip and stopped fighting Jay, "Is my real last name Halstead now?"

Hailey shook her head, "Just here. Want to try it out?"

Drew nodded a little and slid off of Jay.

"All set!" the girl smiled, "You're going to be in Coach Nick's class." She turned and pointed to a guy sitting on a bench with two girls and a boy, "He's right there, so go ahead and drop your towel off and then you're good to go! All the classes start in five minutes."

"Thank you," Hailey smiled and took Drew's hand, "Dad and I will watch from the bleachers, okay?"

Drew breathed shakily and nodded. He scratched his arm and stood close to Hailey.

"Want us to walk with you?" Jay asked.

"What do I say?" Drew looked up at them.

"You just say hi and tell them you're name," Hailey shrugged, "That's all for now. You could ask the others what their names are and what they like to do."

"Um…okay, maybe I can do it," Drew said quietly.

Jay raised his eyebrows, "What changed your mind?"

"If my name's Halstead, I have to be brave like you," Drew bit his lip, "Right?"

Jay softened and smiled. He squatted in front of Drew, "You are brave."

Hailey nodded and squeezed Drew's shoulder, "You're brave no matter what your name is."

Drew smiled a little, "I'll try."

"Go get 'em," Jay said softly and nudged Drew's shoulder.

Drew nodded and slowly walked away.

Hailey breathed deeply, "He'll be okay."

"Definitely," Jay stood.

They walked to the top of the bleachers and turned in time to see Drew introduce himself. The kids all waved at him and it seemed to help because Drew sat on the bench next to the other boy. He was still scratching his arm, but they could see there was a small smile on his face.

Hailey swallowed, "Can we," she looked around, "Like yell to stop? Why's he going backwards?"

Jay set a hand on her arm, "We just have to leave it."

Hailey sighed, "I want-" she stood and snapped her fingers, "Drew," she hissed, "Drew."

He wasn't paying attention though and continued listening to the other kids talk.

"He can't hear you," Jay pulled her back down, "Knock it off."

"I'm worried about him," Hailey mumbled.

"He'll be fine," Jay said. He looked down the bleachers and chuckled, "Look who's here."

Will smiled and waved as he walked up to meet them, "Hey you two."

"What're you doing here?" Hailey smiled.

"Drew told me yesterday that you guys were forcing him to make friends and swim," Will chuckled and sat next to Jay, "I realized that you're horrible parents and needed to come for moral support."

Jay shoved him and shook his head, "Jerk."

"No," Will laughed, "I think this will be good for him."

"How did yesterday go?" Hailey asked.

"Good," Will smiled, "It was fun. We spent a lot of time at the park and we made M&M cookies."

"Thank you," Jay said, "He really seemed to have a lot of fun too and those cookies he brought home were delicious."

"Mom's recipe," Will replied.

"Those are the best," Hailey moaned.

"Right?" Will chuckled.

"Oh, look," Jay pointed to Drew being led to the shallow end of the pool, "Good, he should be able to stand," he breathed.

"Now you need to relax," Hailey squeezed his hand.

"Fine, I'll admit, I'm worried he's going to drown," Jay said, "What's wrong with that?"

"Just don't charge down there if he goes under, let him deal with it on his own," Will advised.

Jay rolled his eyes, "Have you ever taught anyone to swim?"

"You gave him one lesson," Will raised his eyebrows.

"Still," Jay shrugged.

Hailey laughed and kissed the side of his head, "Let that boy do his job."

"What is he? Twelve?" Jay asked.

"Based on the full beard, I'll say thirteen," Will joked.

"You're so funny," Jay mumbled, but still had a small smile on his face.

"I know," Will crossed his arms and leaned back.

Drew was the last of the kids to go into the pool and he seemed to be nervous to do so, but his coach said something that caused Drew to jump in his arms.

"That's dangerous," Jay twitched in his seat.

"You've done more dangerous things," Hailey said and pulled out her phone to take a picture, "Look at him, he's having fun."

"How can you tell? He's barely keeping his head above water," Jay snapped.

"You need to cool it," Will said, "Jay, he's fine."

Jay sighed as Drew held onto the wall and waited to be passed a kickboard, "Fine, I'll stop."

"Good," Hailey rubbed his back.

"You two are too much," Will breathed and leaned forward against his knees.

"Shut up," Jay chuckled.

At the end of the lesson, the kids were allowed to jump off the diving board and Drew's group was walking over to it. Jay was on the edge of his seat, silently hoping Drew would say no. On the other hand, Will was ecstatic and had his phone ready to take a video.

"What if he's crazy good at diving?" Will asked.

"He's seven," Jay sighed and played with his hands.

Hailey set her hands on his, "Look, his coach is waiting in the water for them."

Jay nodded and sucked in a breath as Drew climbed the ladder.

"Oh my god, it's happening," Will stood and started recording, "Let's go Drew!"

Drew looked over at them and nervously waved.

Hailey laughed softly, "He's going to do it."

"I don't know if I can watch," Jay mumbled.

Will pumped his fist, "Drew!"

"Why am I getting emotional?" Hailey laughed and stood as well. She blew a kiss to Drew and smiled as his face lit up.

Drew seemed to take big deep breaths before jumping off the diving board.

Jay smiled and stood between Hailey and Will, "He actually did it."

Hailey wiped her eyes and nodded, "He did."

Drew's head popped up and he gripped his coach tightly who brought him back to the edge of the pool. He waited for the rest of the kids to finish and listened to his coach before hurrying over to the bleachers.

Jay was the first to reach the bottom and wrapped the towel around him, "Holy crap, bud, you jumped!"

"I did!" Drew said and held onto the towel.

"I'm so proud of you," Hailey hugged him to her side and kissed his head, "Was it fun?"

"I liked it," Drew nodded.

Will smiled, "You were awesome," he high-fived Drew, "I'm seriously impressed."

"Thank you," Drew laughed and wiped his face with the towel. He looked at Jay, "You said we could get ice-cream."

"Oh, I'm on board," Will smirked.

Jay chuckled, "All right, let's go get you in dry clothes and then we'll head out."

"With Doctor Will?" Drew asked while walking to the locker room.

"Yes," Will answered before Jay could say anything.

Jay shook his head and followed Drew through the door to change.

Hailey ran a hand through her hair, "Gosh."

"You okay?" Will asked, the two of them walking out of the pool to wait in the hallway.

"Yeah," Hailey sighed, "I really am proud of him. I can't believe he's the same kid."

Will smiled, "He's come a long way?"

"In some ways," Hailey nodded, "He still has his moments; getting him in here in the first place was a disaster."

"The friend thing?" Will leaned against the wall.

"The whole thing," Hailey sighed, "He slept in our bed again last night."

Will raised his eyebrows, "Does he do that a lot?"

"Maybe once or twice a week? He has bad dreams and I can't always turn him away," Hailey admitted.

Will nodded, "As his cool uncle without kids, I'll say that's okay, but as a doctor-"

"I know," Hailey breathed, "Not the best decision."

"You just don't want it to become a habit," Will said, "You're not bad parents. He had bad parents before, he's trying to figure this whole thing out. He's calling you 'Mom' and 'Dad' now, though, that's a huge step."

Hailey smiled and nodded, "I love when he says it."

"Think I can get him to say Uncle Will?" Will smirked.

"Might be too many rules around that one," Hailey laughed.

Jay and Drew walked out of the locker room, "Okay, we're ready for ice-cream," Jay smiled.

Will clapped his hands together, "Perfect."

Drew jumped a little and grabbed Hailey's hand, "Let's go."

"Bye Drew."

The four of them turned to see the boy from Drew's swim class waving at them.

Drew blushed and waved slightly, "Bye Matt."

Hailey smiled as the other boy ran away, "He looked nice."

Drew shrugged and stepped closer to him. He used his free hand to scratch his other arm.

"Why're you nervous?" Jay set a hand on his back as they walked out.

"I don't know him well enough to call him a friend," Drew said quietly.

"Not a problem," Will shrugged, "You'll be back next week and can talk to him more then."

"I don't have to decide right now?" Drew asked.

"Absolutely not," Hailey shook her head, "Remember how long you waited until you called me and Dad your parents? It takes time."

Jay smiled at her and nodded, "Absolutely."

Drew took a deep breath, "Okay. I'll keep him on my list."

Jay chuckled and helped him into the truck, "Glad to hear that."
