The next day while the girls went to school with fights and struggles the whole way he made his way to the hospital to collect Sebastian to take him home
after spending a few hours with Kate explaining the situation to her in the hopes even though she wasn't awake she'd still understand
"I feel so guilty…" he sighed looking down at Seb (Sebastian) in his capsule as he walked down the hall
"Guilty?" the nurse from yesterday asked confused
"Taking him home without his mum, it just doesn't feel right" he stopped to face her
"Sebastian needs his Mum but he needs his Dad too and he's okay to go home keeping him in the nursery isn't really the kind of socialization he needs right now" she smiled sadly at him
"What if I can't do this without her?"
"You're his Father, the only person who is perfect for this job because we aren't sure when Kate will wake up" she shrugged
"But she will wake up right?"
"Yes but it could be weeks even months it depends on when her body heals enough to be ready, the doctor will be thinking of taking her out of the coma in two weeks so until then we can just pray and hope she'll recover herself enough to meet her little boy" she placed a hand on his arm
"How are you so nice and optimistic I mean you only just met me yesterday" he grinned
"I'm a nurse it's my job to be optimistic" she laughed
"Thank you for assuring me that I can do this" he looked down at Seb who was asleep before up at her again
"You don't need assuring Mike you'll do great if you have any problems just call the hospital and ask for me anything I'm willing to help" she smiled
"I better go, get this one home"
"Sure" she nodded
"Thanks again"
"All part of the service" she smiled down at Sebastian before moving back as Mike left the hospital.
A Month Later…
Making his way through the hospital corridor on a beautiful sunny day Mike smiled down at the one-month old who was snuggled in his capsule his son little Sebastian although it had been an amazing experience getting to be there for him he still felt guilty about the fact that Kate wasn't around to see it.
Stopping in the doorway of her room he got the shock of his life when he emerald green eyes were staring back at her
"Kate?" he said surprised moving into the room
"Hey…" she said in a croaky voice
"Your awake" he moved to her bedside placing Seb's capsule on the end of the bed
"I…" she began saying when he placed a soft kiss against her lips his hand moved up and brushed against his cheek
"You have no idea how glad I am too see you awake" he moved back from the kiss.
A whole month,
A whole month without Kate by his side helping raise Sebastian,
A whole month of changing dirty nappies alone,
A whole month doing the midnight feeds alone,
A whole month of watching Sebastian grow older alone,
A whole month of Kate not getting to meet their son,
A whole month of a few sleepless nights when Sebastian was so restless he wouldn't sleep,
A whole month of watching Sophie struggle without Kate,
A whole month on having to rely on his 14 year old sister for her help,
A whole month since he'd taken up a shore posting not wanting to leave his family ever again,
A whole month since Kate had surgery,
A whole month of sleeping alone,
A whole month of hospital visits praying each day she'd wake up and here he was a whole month later kissing her tender lips with the feel of her kissing him back.
"When did you wake up?" he smiled moving back towards Seb who was asleep
"This morning they didn't tell me much just that I'd been in a coma" she shrugged
"Yeah you were pretty bad had surgery" he pointed to the hair that was growing over the healed wound
"I was wondering why half my hair was missing" she grinned
"Kate I…" he began saying
"Is that…" she looked at the capsule
"Mummy meet Sebastian" he carefully took him out of the capsule and placed him in her arms
"He's so big" she said sadly looking down at him
"You've been out for a month Kate" he sighed taking up residence in the empty seat pulling it closer to her bed
"A month…" she teared up
"Yeah"
"Can you please…" she motioned for him to take Sebastian
"Sure" he said confused taking him before sitting back down watching her brush her hands across her face
"I've missed a whole month?" she asked through the tears
"Oh Kate I didn't…" he sighed sadly
"I can't…" she began pulling at her hair
"Kate stop" he said carefully placing Sebastian back in the capsule and placing it on the chair he was previously sitting in
"A whole month of not getting to bond with our son" she mumbled when he moved forward wrapping his arms around her
"There's plenty of time to bond with him Kate he's only a baby he doesn't know any different" he answered stroking her hair
"A whole month Mike" she gripped his shirt
"But you're here now and our little boy he needs his Mother"
"How am I supposed to connect with a baby I never got to hold after his birth?" she sniffled when he moved back
"Because you're his Mother and no matter if you got to bond with him you have a chance to see how truly extraordinary he is now you can bond with him still there's plenty of time" he assured her wiping the tears off her cheeks.
"You chose my name…" she smiled sadly at him
"Yeah I did" he laughed softly continuing to brush his hand across her cheek while he looked down at her
"I want… Can I…" she struggled
"You'll be okay?" he asked nervously moving back to pick up Sebastian again
"I want a proper look at him" she nodded when he slowly placed him down in her arms
"He's waking up" he whispered looking down at them watching a smile form across Kate's face when her eyes were met with Sebastian's emerald green ones
"He has my eyes" Kate moved her hand when he gripped his tiny hand around her pinkie
"A strong grip too" Mike laughed moving the capsule off the chair to sit back down
"What was he like? When he was born?" she looked across at him
"Well... Pretty much the same just not as big and chubby" he grinned
"How'd you cope?"
"I coped alright I mean the sleepless nights were a bit tuff but Cleo helped out when she could"
"You let your fourteen-year-old sister take what should have been your responsibility?" she grinned
"Well no, but you know what Cleo's like" he rolled his eyes.
"And Soph, how's she coping?" Kate smiled down at Seb who was now wide awake studying the woman looking down at him
"She's been struggling without you around but she's been her usual self as always her nose is in a book"
"Hmm" she grinned across at him
"What?"
"Oh nothing she remind me a bit of her Father but with his boat"
"Speaking of which" he cleared his throat moving the chair closer
"Am I about to like what you're going to say?"
"I took a shore posting a month ago, went over Maxine's head to the BRASS" he answered watching her eyes widen
"You what?"
"I didn't want to go back out leave you and the girls, leave Seb" he looked down at Sebastian who was still looking up at Kate
"So you finally did it, Might Mike Flynn took a shore posting" she grinned
"Yeah, I don't know why I left it so long you were right"
"Come again?"
"You Kate McGregor were right" he smiled when her hand moved across and brushed against his cheek she noticed the ring on her wedding finger
"Ah…" she gave him a questioning look
"About that, Cleo may have given me your journal it's how I knew about what to call Seb"
"So you saw about the whole marriage thing…" she said awkwardly pulling her hand back he quickly grabbed it and slid the engagement ring off her finger
"Kate…" he smiled moving out of his chair he knelt next to her bed
"Mike…"
"I've been waiting a whole month to ask you this is person but after almost loosing you for god knows what number it'd be I knew it was the right time, Kate McGregor I love you; god I love you so much so I'll ask with all of my heart will you do me the honour of marrying me?" he asked hopeful still holding her hand
"Yes" she nodded with tears in her eyes
"Yes?" he asked with a smile getting ready to slip it back on her finger
"Yes Mike Flynn I'll marry you" she repeated when he pushed the ring on her finger he shifted to stand moving down he placed a passionate kiss against her lips a small gurgle pulling them away from their embrace their heads resting together as they looked down at Sebastian
"He's a cheeky bugger isn't it?" she laughed
"Anything that focuses the attention off him is just something he will not accept" Mike grinned turning her head to face him again she smiled at the way he looked down at their son
"Mike…"
"Yeah?" he asked looking at her their lips centimetres apart
"I love you" she smiled placing her hand against his cheek again
"You have no idea how good it is to hear those words" he rested his forehead against hers
"I love you" she repeated with a cheeky grin
"And I love you" he kissed her softly Sebastian cooing breaking them out of their embrace once again
"Bit of a attention hog isn't he" she laughed looking back down at him
"He deserves to be, he just wants his Mum" Mike kissed her forehead.
