I was writing a Jo/Lindsay friendship one shot thing and realized how much I've missed writing Jo and how it's been a long time since I wrote this story. Thank COVID-19 for making me unemployed and bored and made me think hey I could get back into my fanfiction stories. So here I am, I actually didn't think this story stunk like I did some other stories I've looked back on, so I decided why not finish this one at some point in my life. Here's some much needed JoDAMN story continuation. If you fans are still about. I've grown older a bit since I last wrote this so I think my writing is sort of better.
Chapter 19:
Adam looked at Jo nervously, afraid of hearing the last thing she remembered. He glanced over at Ellie for a moment and sighed slightly, This was not going to be very good, he thought to himself. "Hey Jo, do you even know where you are at right now?"
Jo looked around, "How did I get to the hospital? My head is absolutely killing me. Ellie, hey," she smiled slightly seeing her daughter there.
"Hi mom, I was so worried about you, so was Adam, he's been looking after you, I've been keeping him company. What's the last thing you remember?" Ellie asked, she knew Adam didn't have the heart to ask.
"Well, I remember getting pissed at our landlord for letting someone into our apartment without proper I.D., and I just remember things getting dark when I got to the apartment, and now I wake up and here I am." The girls both heard a huge sigh come from Adam, Jo eyed him suspiciously. "Remind me to file a complaint on the landlord for not doing his job."
Adam nodded, "Sure I'll put it on a Post It for you."
Ellie stood up, "I'll go let the doctor know that you're awake mom."
Adam tensed up when Ellie left the room, Jo looked at him, "How long have I been here for?"
"About a week, Jo I want to apologize for everything that happened, I accused you of being into Don, we got into a fight and you went and got hurt by my crazy one night stand with Stacy. I can't forgive myself for everything that happened, I hate how insecure that I can be."
Jo frowned at Adam, "Can we not talk about that right now, I have a killer headache to deal with your rambling right now. No offense."
He frowned and nodded, "Oh yeah, none taken," he ran a hand through his hair.
Moments later Jo's doctor came in to examine her, asking her questions of what she remembered and everything, he wrote on his clipboard and smiled, "Well I'm glad everything is alright, well except for the headache. I'll give you a prescription and then we can fill out the release forms so you could get back home."
Hours later Adam bought Jo back to her apartment, even though he insisted it would probably be better if her and Ellie still stayed with him. She didn't want to argue since that was what got them into trouble in the first place. Adam has started to feel more tense and nervous around Jo the longer he spent near her. Ellie could sense it and she didn't necessarily like it either. The doctor told Jo that she should get some rest and not dive back into work so quickly, he knew how stubborn she could be, it wasn't the first time he had to take care of Jo in the hospital. Jo went into her bedroom and closed the door.
Adam plopped down on the couch, "I hope that she doesn't stay mad at me for long."
Ellie looked at her friend in concern, "Hey, she's just not feeling well Adam, I'm sure after she gets some rest in her own place she'll feel better in no time. You told me that you guys can't stay mad at each other for long. Plus she's probably really confused right now."
Adam nodded, "Yeah waking up in a hospital bed after a week of being in a coma is a very confusing time," he thought back at the one time he was little and ended up in the hospital due to his dad's abuse. He was confused and super scared and he had no idea what he could do at the time.
"Earth to Adam," Ellie waved in Adam's face, his face looked super pale and Ellie was concerned. "Did you go to a dark place in your mind? I haven't seen you so pale before."
He didn't want to talk to Ellie about it, she was already concerned enough for her mother. "Hey would you be offended if I left to go do some things? I can come back with dinner, if that's okay."
"Sure as long as it's pizza you bring back and you don't look so pale when you come back."
"Deal," Adam got off of the couch, "Let your mom know that I left but will be back."
"Yeah, of course Adam," she walked him to the door. "I'll take good care of her until you return, I promise."
"Thanks," he smiled softly at Jo's daughter before leaving.
Once the door closed, Jo emerged from her bedroom. Ellie looked at her mom, "Aren't you supposed to be resting mom?"
"This is me resting," Jo shrugged. "So where did Adam go?"
"He went to go do a few things, he said he'll come back in a few hours with pizza. Are you doing alright mom? Adam was really concerned about you being mad at him."
"I'm not mad at him, things are just a little fuzzy right now and I don't like it. I'm slowly remembering what led me to come back to my apartment in the first place. Apparently me and Adam had a fight about me liking Don, which doesn't make sense, why would I like Don when it's pretty obvious how I feel about Adam," Jo sat down on the couch. "In the hospital he told me that he doesn't like how insecure he can be. I just don't know what to do, how can I get Adam to not feel that way?" she ran fingers through her hair. "Wait, what happened with Stacy? I completely forgot I was trying to find her that day me and Adam had that fight, I thought Stacy put those thoughts in his head."
"Oh that well, they didn't really tell me anything, all I heard was Stacy was no longer in the picture. Everytime adults talked I was asked to leave your room in the hospital. And as far as Adam being insecure, you just have to show him how much he means to you. I mean you do love him after all."
Jo nodded, "That I do."
Ellie smiled, "He was pretty worried that you would forget he and you were dating, I'm glad that's not the case. Oops mom," she suddenly remembered. "I was supposed to tell Tyler you were out of the hospital, he was too shaken up to come visit you."
"I could see why he wouldn't have come, he already doesn't like showing much emotion as is on a normal basis. He has been pretty busy in his college studies too. Do you talk to your brother often? I know I never seem to call him at a good time."
"Yeah I talk to him almost once a week, not much going on in his life besides school, I can't help but feel bad for him," Ellie sighed, and got up, "Let me go call him, he'll be happy to know you are alright." She went into her own room and Jo smiled at how similar Ellie was to herself.
Jo felt an intense throbbing in her head, she already took her medicine before they got home, but she tried to ignore it, she went to the kitchen to get some water. Before she could get the glass she groaned, holding onto the counter as she suddenly felt really dizzy. She closed her eyes for a moment trying to stand more upright. Jo ended up sliding down to the floor, images flashed through her head moments about that day coming to her apartment and Stacy being there. She seen flashes of Stacy keep on hitting her in the head, and then she remembered being prodded with a needle.
She opened her eyes and seen Ellie rush into the kitchen, kneeling down next to her. "Mom, mom are you okay?"
Jo nodded, "Yeah I just... I felt dizzy so I thought sliding onto the ground was a better choice then falling onto it. I-I'm okay now though, thanks." She let her daughter help her up. "So what did Tyler say?" Jo asked, pretending she was alright.
Ellie looked at her mom suspiciously, she knew her mom wasn't okay but she knew better than to push it. "He said he's glad you're feeling better and was wondering if he could come over for lunch tomorrow. Mom why don't you go sit down and I'll get you a snack to munch on and some water."
"Yeah, thanks," she smiled at her daughter and walked back to the living room sitting down on the couch. Jo hated feeling weak, like she wasn't capable of things, she had to work through the pain, Jo Danville would not be a fragile woman who needed protecting.
Adam had went to the lab to update everyone, but first he had to go see the therapist in the building to make an appointment for him. He still had images of Stacy shooting herself in front of him, and he, and mostly Mac thought it was a good idea to set up some therapy sessions. Adam wanted to prove to Jo that he wouldn't be so insecure anymore, he hated having self doubts, but that's what happened when getting abused by your father since his childhood. He had a lot he needed to work on, for himself.
He headed up to the 35th floor and headed to Mac's office, he seen his boss doing paperwork. Mac looked up and waved him in after noticing him.
"Hey Mac, Jo got released from the hospital and I just scheduled some therapy sessions for myself like you suggested, I'll need the next several Thursdays off."
Mac nodded, "So how is she doing? She go back to her place?"
"Yeah, I tried to convince her to stay at my place like she had been doing but she wanted to be at hers, and I know you can't exactly argue with her. I'm glad she has Ellie to help her out when I'm not there."
"You really got a good connection with Ellie, don't you?" he smiled at the younger man. "I'm proud of you Adam."
Adam smiled, "Thanks boss, well I should get going thought I would keep you updated."
"Thanks, and let Jo know that I better not see her in for work anytime soon. We know how she is with resting."
"Yeah, she's almost as bad as you with that," Adam laughed and walked away. Mac just shook his head, he finished up with his paperwork, he could finally go have a nice dinner with Christine. He was glad things were going well with their relationship, he wanted to propose to her but he wasn't exactly sure where he wanted to do it at. Or how he could bring himself to ask. Mac thought of someone who could help him out, he dialed the number of his old friend and partner. He leaned back in his chair, a moment later the woman answered.
"Detective Bonasera."
"Hey Stella, it's been a while."
"Mac Taylor, you're telling me. So how are things?" she asked, and Mac started to tell her all that was going on.
Adam had ran into a few other people in the lab, everyone asking him questions about Jo, and he slowly got tired of being ambushed with questions. He sat at his desk, hands running through his hair, he looked up as Lindsay came in.
"Hey Adam, I heard that Jo was released from the hospital. That's good that she's doing okay. Danny said she seemed to remember you two were dating, so that's a good sign," she smiled at him, who nodded with a slight frown on his face.
"Yeah she seems really irritable though, but you can't exactly blame her. I hope she'll be in better spirits when I get back to her place. I think she would love a girl day, she would be pretty happy to see you."
Lindsay smiled, "It's been so long since me and her hung out, you have been keeping her all to yourself pretty well."
Adam blushed, "I can't help that she likes being around me so much. But you just have to ask her to hang out more." He suddenly felt his phone go off, he seen the called I.D. as Jo so he picked up, not expecting to hear Ellie's voice in a panic.
"Adam, mom, she's... she's looking paler than you were, she has a fever and started throwing up. She might be reacting bad to the medicine, I-I called for the ambulance and I'm trying to remain calm. Like she told me to do whenever I'm in a mood to panic."
Adam didn't like what he was hearing on the other end of the line, "Just stay calm and I-I'll meet you at the hospital."
"O-Okay Adam, I hear the ambulance now, I'll see you at the hospital," she responded and hung up.
"Lindsay, I have to go, Jo has a fever and is throwing up."
Lindsay felt her heart drop, "Adam, I'll drive you to the hospital okay?"
Adam nodded, "Let's go."
They arrived to the hospital as soon as they could, Ellie was pacing in the waiting room and Adam and Lindsay came up to her. Ellie threw her arms around Adam, "Adam, I'm so scared. She started feeling dizzy so I told her to rest I gave her some fruit and water and then it all happened so fast."
Lindsay frowned, hoping that Jo would be alright, especially for the girl's sake. She sat down on the uncomfortable chair, jumping up as soon as the doctor came out, "How is she?"
The doctor frowned, "She could be better, her fever is at 102.3."
Lindsay glared at him, "I can't believe you let her leave the hospital earlier today, why did you think she was going to be okay? What were you thinking? Obviously you sent her home too soon, she's not invincible you know."
Adam let go of Ellie and came up to Lindsay, "Linds, hey, it's going to be okay, she's strong remember?"
Lindsay shook her head, "This ass should have kept her under observation longer, apparently he's not so thorough on his patients," she huffed.
The doctor put up his hand, "She was in the best shape once she left, maybe she wasn't resting like I suggested. She's going to be alright though, just got to keep her until her temperature settles down. "
"You better hope that she's going to be alright, or I'm going to find a way to have you fired for this."
Adam rested his hand on Lindsay's shoulder, "She's going to be alright Linds," he told her, mainly for himself to remain strong during this. He didn't want to keep having this feeling of losing her. "Can we go see her now?"
The doctor nodded, sending the three of them in the direction of Jo's room. Ellie frowned, she was tired of seeing her mom in a hospital bed. Jo shifted once she heard them come in, she wasn't expecting to see Lindsay here, she couldn't help avoid eye contact with Adam, she didn't want to see the look of concern on his face.
"Jo," Lindsay went to go give her a small hug. "I'm sorry about that quack doctor, letting you out before you were ready."
Jo hugged her back, "You know I can't stand the thought of being in a hospital. You know I would have fussed until he let me leave. You know me, must stay strong."
Lindsay nodded, "Yeah, I wish you would realize one day that you are human Jo."
"I do realize that I am human Lindsay."
Ellie finally had calmed nerves enough to sit down in front of her mom, "I was so worried about you mom, but I remember what you told me about remaining calm."
Jo smiled, "I'm proud of you for staying calm Ellie," she reached out for her daughter's hand. "I love you sweetie."
"I love you too mom. I always worry about you."
Jo nodded, she always understood her daughter's concern for the kind of job she had, one day Ellie wouldn't have to worry about that, but she still had about ten plus years before she retired. If it didn't kill her first. "I know, kiddo. I wish you didn't have to worry about me so much, but it comes with the job," she paused before adding, "Even though this time wasn't necessarily my job that got me injured."
At those words Adam's face fell, he didn't know if she was just telling Ellie that she could get hurt even if she didn't work as a CSI, or if she blamed him for what happened, just like Mac did when it all happened. Either way it didn't make him feel good about himself. Jo could sense the thoughts in Adam's head, so she looked at him, frowning mostly out of guilt of her words.
"Oh Adam, please don't take it the wrong way. I'm just saying that because it's just, we live in a city where shit happens no matter what kind of job you have. There's always a chance that you could get hurt."
"I know you didn't mean it like that Jo," he lied, he of course had his doubts.
Lindsay and Ellie could both feel the tension, Lindsay spoke up, "Jo, do you mind if I borrow Ellie and go find something to eat?"
Jo sighed, she didn't trust herself to say something stupid when they left, but she didn't want Adam to think she didn't want anything to do with him, that wasn't the case at all. "Sure, I don't mind at all." Jo smiled as the two girls left and then she turned to Adam. "Please sit down Adam, you're making me antsy just standing there."
He just nodded, nervously sitting down in the chair, "I seem to keep on doing the wrong thing."
The older woman frowned reaching over for his hand, "I'm sorry if I seem aggitated by you, I promise I'm not, I'm just so out of it. I hate feeling fragile Adam, like I can't handle taking care of myself. I did perfectly fine in my life, I mean I'm still here aren't I?"
"Yeah, but people are allowed to worried about you Jo, it shows they care. And like it or not I'm always going to be worried about you," he smiled softly at her and she smiled back.
"That's just something I have to deal with, I'm sure I'm bound to handle it. I just don't want to feel fragile, so please don't treat me like I'm broken once I get out of here."
"Can I just promise to try not to treat you that way?" Adam asked, if he did it's just because he couldn't help it.
"Fine, so I have been meaning to ask since Ellie doesn't know much details, what exactly happened with Stacy?"
Adam told her the story about how when Jo was out of it that he tried to calm Stacy down, but she ended up shooting herself in front of him and died almost instantly. Jo could sense just how shaken up Adam was by that.
"Adam, I'm really sorry to hear that, I can't imagine what you've been feeling this past week, and I come across as a bitch since I woken up."
He squeezed her hand, "You don't need to apologize, Mac suggested I go to therapy and I just made some appointments today. It's going to be a long process but at least I'm getting help."
Jo nodded, "I'm glad you can get help, admitting you need help is a big step, something I don't think I can do. I've always felt the need to remain strong no matter what is thrown at me."
"I mean I can't blame you for always seeming strong, I wish I had that trait like you do."
Jo shook her head, "I'm glad you don't have that trait, every guy I dated before always acted tough no matter what happened to them. It's a nice change being with someone who is okay with not being okay all the time. I don't want to change you for anything in the world, you can work on not being so insecure, but please always show emotion, don't become a stiff like me. I should be getting some rest, humans rest right?"
Adam laughed, "Yeah they do. And you're not a stiff, but you could loosen up just a little bit. Oh and I almost forgot, Mac said he doesn't want to see you in the lab anytime soon."
"Of course he did, he's definitely the most stiff man I met," Jo smirked before closing her eyes. Adam looked at her and smiled, he was sure that they were going to be okay. Things were going to be alright as long as Jo and Adam had good communication and didn't let anything get in the way of their love.
