A little shorter chapter than usual, but the ending felt fitting to end the Chapter there, so I did. Sorry if this chapter jumos around a bit, I wrote the interactions as they came to me, and after I realised how long rheu would probably be doing things.
Here's to hitting 400 follows! feel free to Review, as always, I own nothing but the story.
"So, I take it you met Winter, upon your arrival," Weiss asked the rest of her team as they passed the time,
"Very briefly, She was more focused on Chief and the Arbiter," Ruby replied
"Understandable, this is a key moment in Remnant's history."
"Well, I suppose, she seemed quite uptight."
"Well, that's Winter for you, always focused on how she can improve, and how she can better assist Ironwood."
"She needs some outlet of some kind, even we had some outlet during training."
"This is her outlet," Weiss told them, "It was the only way she could branch out from my father, who is ever obsessed with the company."
"Well, if things go how I think they'll go, he may lose the majority of his revenue."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, Dust doesn't work in space right?" Weiss nodded, "And the Chief and Arbiter need a space-worthy vessel to get back to UNSC space, meaning, that they will have to share power generation, propulsion, munitions, and gravity generating capabilities to Atlas. While they do have a monopoly on the tech industry, this will set them on another level.
From what I've seen, Fusion is about 500 times more potent than Dust generators in terms of energy output, so of course, they will switch, And I don't think the Schnee Dust Company will have the rights to those patents anytime soon."
"So what you're saying, is that the UNSC is going to wipe the SDC off the market?"
"Well, not exactly, but, I'd start taking out what you can and keeping it safe if you know what I mean. It won't happen right away, but I can see shortly after they get the manufacturing down, the SDC may not have as many profits the next quarter."
"I see… Well, I could see about opening an account without Father, Winter and Mother would definitely approve."
"Yeah, may have to budget things a bit more too."
"Well, that is something I've found." The heiress began, "Ever since coming back here, I've found all of my dresses and skirts to be too constricting, I think it's a side effect of your training regime,"
"Could be…" Blake said, "I've always favoured mobility in my clothes since the shift in the White Fang's focus."
"Well, we can look into getting you more comfortable outfits when we meet up again for next semester."
The Schnee nodded in agreement,
"So aside from meeting up with old war heroes, and exploring Alien facilities, what have you done during the break?" She asked her team, eager for all the gossip,
"Not much," Yang admitted, "Surprising Dad and our Uncle with people they thought were dead, catching up, playing cards and a few other minor things."
"I take it you haven't had anything worth bragging about happen," Blake asked Weiss, who sighed in disgust.
"Ugh, any time I've had some semblance of free time, I get interrupted by something, 'Help me plan this party.' 'What do you think we should invest in?' I know I want to run the company and undo all the wrongs my father has done while in charge, but… Gods does he make it such a chore. I already know everything to run the company, he is just being hypercritical, when I don't act perfect, even when my actions haven't changed from when he accepted them a few months ago."
"You sure he couldn't do with some cyanide..?" Ruby asked again, sarcasm obvious,
"I don't know… Something to knock him off his high horse."
"Well, if what Ruby said is correct, Atlas' shift from dependence on Dust might do the trick." Blake pointed out,
"Maybe… or he could just spiral into madness at the loss of his power."
"Well, either way, that's a win, right?" Yang asked, not the most informed on these sorts of situations,
"Unfortunately no, he's got enough 'friends' and contacts with the Atlas aristocrats that it might just make my life a living hell, they could bail him out of just about anything, bar treason, and he's not that much of an idiot." The heiress explained.
"Well, whatever happens, we got your back," Ruby said, gaining another smile from her partner.
"Thanks, guys."
"So your Gav plates, work with however much voltage is put into it?" One of the Atlas Scientists asked the AI, currently plugged into a holo-table in the main lab,
"Yes, it's quite similar to a piezoelectric material in that regard, instead of motion, you get a pulse of Gravity."
"Why are they everywhere on the ship?" Another asked,
"There's effectively no direct effect of Gravity on the crew in Space," Cortana explained, "Most of the time ships move at such speeds that by the time Gravity has had enough effect to pull the ship down, it just goes round instead. We Orbit the planet, much like how the moon orbits, or how your planet orbits your sun, it saves on fuel and energy, while providing a predictable trajectory for other ships to rendezvous, or to meet up with other stations in orbit themselves. It gives a feeling not too dissimilar to when in freefall, underwater, or when you are shot up in a car on a bumpy ride, just indefinite, and minus the drag you get from the former two." She projected a model of a dot orbiting the planet, going round in a circle as the planet spinning.
"I see…"
"So, because the Human body begins to drastically lose bone and muscle mass when in microgravity, as it is known, for extended periods of time, It was a must development for interstellar travel. Microgravity works on stations in orbit, close to their parent planet and with the ability to have exercise equipment for extended, scientific endeavours, but not with military personal, and we pretty-much researched everything you could do in microgravity within the 21st and 22nd century."
The Atlesian scientists were amazed at the AI, and the tech it showed, knowing that Remnant would have taken another 300 years to come up with something, even if they were already looking into alternatives for Dust.
"All UNSC ships have to have a standard of 1G of gravity for transit but are allowed to adjust to a destination's levels slowly, to allow the crew to adapt. You not only have to contend with your weight changing between planets, but your blood needs different amounts of force to be pumped at different gravities, so usually, we come out of cryo a week or so before if the Gravity is vastly different from Earth's, so that the crew get used to the new levels."
"I see, it's rare for people here to have the effects of different gravity levels long term. Is this planet also 1G or something else?" Pietro asked Cortana.
"Funnily enough this planet actually has about half of Earth's gravity, which helps you get away with the stunts you can pull with weaponry I suppose, You can't break your fall with gunshots on Earth, not by a long shot."
"Huh, your structures must have to be vastly over-engineered compared to ours then."
"Yup, but we have placed with over 3G within Earth's colonies, and I'm sure the Covenant knew places of quite high Gravity too."
"So we would be 6 times heavier on that planet than we are on this one?" Another scientist asked,
"Correct," the Arbiter answered, "Jumping to those sorts of levels unprepared will surely render you unconscious, unless you are wearing special equipment, and have had specialist training."
"Another thing, about the Fusion Reactors." It asks for Deuterium and Tritium."
"Yes," Cortana replied, "Isotopes of Hydrogen, Deuterium has a proton and a neutron within its Nucleus and Tritium has 2 Neutrons."
"Those will be quite hard to find."
"Don't worry, we only need a relatively small amount, I already made a scan of the Atmosphere, we should be able to take what we need from it, we just need a condenser and filter."
"And I assume you will be helping with those?"
"Yes, they will be simple enough though."
The talks about the various technologies and materials went on for several hours, to the point where the General came in, saying that he would show the Arbiter and Chief, rooms they could stay in, and continue the talks tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Winter went to go check up on RWBY, and was pleasantly surprised to see her sister finally enjoying herself for once, even if she didn't show it.
"Do you plan to stay here with The Master Chief and the Arbiter?" The specialist asked the group, "If not, I'd suggest leaving soon, so you can get back to Vale before it gets too late."
The Spartan and her team looked up at the elder Schnee, before at each other "We probably should." Ruby said, "Don't want to cause Dad and Qrow too much worrying."
At the sound of that name Winter couldn't help an outburst, "You know Qrow?!"
"Yeah, he's our uncle," Yang replied, "How do you know him?"
It took a moment for her to recompose herself, but when she did she replied, "We were… colleagues on a few missions, much to my annoyance."
"He's that bad out on the field?" Ruby asked,
"Yes… he may be a skilled fighter, but he always has trouble focusing on the task at hand."
"I'll keep that in mind then."
"Why, you think you will be working with him?"
"No, but can't pass up any dirt I can get on him." She smiled back.
"Anyway, she's right, we should get going." She stood up, and Yang and Blake stood up shortly after her, "If you ever need something to spike a drink with, let me know." She said teasingly to Weiss, who punched her back,
"Stop it!" She almost wined, but restrained herself in front of her sister, "I'm not going to spike my father's drink."
Her partner shrugged, "Hey, never hurts to ask." They bid farewell as the three made their way back to the air pads.
"Mind telling me what that was about?" Winter asked her younger sister, staring her down.
Said stare no longer worked on the Heiress, but out of being polite, she answered, "She got into a standoff with Father when handing off Chief and the Arbiter to the General, and Father being Father, saw her as nothing but an obstacle in his path. Ruby doesn't particularly like it when people make that mistake, not to mention she has heard enough of him already, to know she doesn't like him."
"I see… so that is the leader you hold in such high regard is it?"
"Yes, it is. She knows how to be a good leader, and challenges us daily, I can say for certain, that I have learned more with her, than I ever did with the thousands of tutors we had when we were younger."
"Despite, her… headstrong approach to things?"
"She can be delicate if she wants to, and the situation calls for it."
"Well, at least you are happy with her."
"Oh! That reminds me." She turned towards her elder sister,
"Oh?"
"I was thinking about opening another bank account, one that isn't under Father's thumb."
"Any particular reason?"
"From what my team told me, the technology that our visitors are going to be sharing, will probably make the SDC drop in the market significantly."
"I see, gather up as much as you can before he steals it back."
"Exactly."
"Mother would be happy,"
"I thought so too."
"I'll see what I can do, if you're setting up one without Father, you will need to do it when he doesn't know, I am your best chance at that."
"Oh, I'm sure Klein could figure something out."
"No, don't worry, something tells me I'm going to be having a lot of free time for the next while."
Weiss smiled,
"Thank you, Winter,"
"Don't mention it."
