In the weeks after the events on the night of the eclipse Imani had gotten a letter from Illvemorny about going to do some talks and classes on the Dark Arts. Another letter asked to go to their ministry and file some paper work. Imani would also use that opportunity to stock up on some potions ingredients she'd been a little low on, how often would she get an extended time away from her family to safely go witch shopping?
Imani spoke with her dad about going and taking some weeks off. She'd cleared it with the school, she'd make up for it when she came back. Illvemorny sent a letter as well which helped.
"So where are you going?" Stiles asked. He stood in the doorway to her room watching her pack a bag.
"I'm going to do another little road trip around America."
"How long will you be away?" He asked looking down briefly. Imani got the sense he didn't want her to leave.
"Stiles I'll be fine. I'll be gone a couple of weeks. I also heard some friends from England were wanting to see America and we're going to make a trip of it." Imani said. Lying through her teeth. Although she hoped her friends from Hogwarts had gotten her letters and were planning on coming over in future.
"Are your friends coming here?" Stiles perked up interested to meet the people that helped his sister out. Her adoptive brother he'd heard so much about in their sibling talks.
"I don't know, depends on their free time." Imani said looking up at him smiling. "Listen next time I'll bring you along. I couldn't take you this time because of school. Dad would shoot me if I tried." Imani chuckled. Stiles at last cracked a smile laughing a little at her joke. With that Imani zipped up her bag that contained her muggle possessions, she'd need to pack her witch ones later when no one was looking on from her door frame.
The first days of her 'road trip' Imani spent at the ministry catching up on a bit of paperwork covering what'd happened with the Darach and Alpha Pack. Reporting who was dead and who was still alive. Imani had searched for Jennifer once recovered from her concussion. Sniffing around in her snow leopard form she tracked Jennifer's blood to the Nemeton but didn't get the sense she'd used it again to save her. Instead she found a lot more blood. Following it she eventually found Jennifer's body with her throat slashed open. It could've only been done by a werewolf. The only werewolves who would willingly kill someone in such a manner was Derek and Peter. Knowing Derek was with Scott that night it left Peter. Imani didn't approve necessarily but at least Jennifer wasn't coming back. Imani also deduced that Kali had been killed by Jennifer when she didn't see the werewolf around Beacon any more and how the twins acted free and a lot more relaxed now that they were out from under the thumb of the other alphas and Deucalion.
The paperwork and interview with the head of the American Aurors took longer than Imani thought but the upside was that Imani had gotten a small office. It was small compared to some others but it was hers and she wouldn't be in very often anyway, besides it had the perk of being able to be locked. The head auror was impressed by how she handled everything considering no one knew of her being a witch in Beacon Hills. He did give her some pointers about how to help from the shadows and be more of a help. Imani appreciated it. She even got to have a couple of duels with other aurors who were in the building. They were impressed with her stories from Hogwarts and Voldemort. Imani won all the duels she faced proving her worth and ability to not only herself but to the aurors present.
"So do you think Beacon Hills will calm down now that the Alpha pack have been disbanded?"
"I'll speak frankly. I don't think it will. The trance my brother and his friends went into leaves a mark, and the Nemeton got power back thanks to the Darach. I've got a feeling it's only just started." Imani explained. The man walking with her down the corridors of the ministry nodded his head.
"Any idea on what might be coming next?" He asked
"No. For the moment it's quiet. I expect once I get back it won't be." Imani replied. Wishing she had different answers.
The principal of Ilvermorny Agilbert Fontaine contacted her a few days into her 'road trip'.
"Miss Stilinski-Potter? A letter arrived." A young wizard said after knocking on her office door. She got up from her desk and opened it.
"It's Imani. My last names are a mouthful." She said smiling politely and taking the letter. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." He said and continued his rounds.
Imani went back to her desk seeing the Ilvermorny crest in wax. Turning the letter over she saw very neat cursive writing in a navy blue ink. She smiled knowing this to be about her taking classes. She opened it.
Dear Ms Imani Stilinski-Potter,
I hope you have had some time to think over my proposal of your teaching a few classes at Ilvermorny school of witchcraft and wizardry. I know the students would have a lot to learn from you, and would be excited to learn from someone close to their ages.
Many thanks,
Headmaster Agilbert Fontaine of Ilvermorny school of witchcraft and wizardry
Imani was happy to receive the principal's letter and wrote a reply quickly agreeing with his proposal and that she had free time at the moment and was able to teach and lecture at his earliest convenience. The next day a familiar knock came upon her door.
"Miss Imani? A letter came for you today." The mail wizard said. Imani opened her office door smiling.
"Thank you." She said and saw the same crest and the same ink and handing writing.
Dear Ms, Imani Stilinski-Potter,
I'm pleased to invite you over the tomorrow to Ilvemorny. I'll grant you a tour of our campus before showing you where you'll be teaching our students. We've organised a room for you to stay whilst you're with us.
As is tradition we're offering you an opportunity to sorted into one of our houses. Thunderbird, Wampus, Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie.
Thunderbird represents the soul
Wampus represents the body
Horned Serpent represents the mind
Pukwudgie represents the heart
Many thanks,
Headmaster Agilbert Fontaine of Ilvermorny school of witchcraft and wizardry
Imani arrived at the imposing castle. The size matched that of Hogwarts. Two people were waiting outside for her.
"You must be Headmaster Agilbert Fontaine." Imani said. She was dress neatly for the occasion. A white button up shirt, sleeves rolled to her elbows, blue blazer, black smart jeans and her favourite gryffindor converse.
"Ms Imani Stilinski-Potter. It is an honour. This is professor Eulalie Hicks." Agilbert replied gesturing to a aged witch to his left.
As they walked into the main entrance hall Imani smiled it was similar to Hogwarts but also very different. As her eyes adjusted to the candle lit room she saw all the students gathered on upper levels. By the stairs she noticed what must've been the professors whom she nodded in greeting to. Agilbert and Eulalie stood next to them. Before her stood four wooden statues and a on the floor a beautiful Gordian knot. The statues were of the animals each house represented.
"Beautiful craftsmanship." Imani whispered.
"Thank you." Agilbert nodded. "This is how we sort our students. Each person stands on the Gordian knot and the statues will respond if they would like you in their houses. If more than one responds the choice is up to you. I've already told them that you're a guest and not a student. But the students and admittedly myself would like to see which house you would be sorted into."
"I understand and am interested myself." Imani said smiling. A small creature came forwards. Imani recognised them as a Pukwudgie.
"Would miss like me to take her luggage to her room?"
"Yes thank you." Imani said handing her bag over. The Pukwudgie walked away and all but disappeared.
Imani turned back to the statues and knot on the ground.
"All you need to do is stand on the Gordian knot. Before you do I'll tell you a little about each house. First the Thunderbird for the soul and favours adventurers, Second the Wampus for the body favours warriors, Third the Horned Serpent for the mind favours scholars and Fourth the Pukwudgie for the heart favours healers." Agilbert explained.
At the mention of the houses students stood taller or moved forwards slightly. Imani noticed they were stood near their respective house statue.
"It's a different sorting technique to what Hogwarts has." Imani admitted.
"How do they sort students?" Eulalie asked. Imani smiled.
"A talking and singing hat." Imani simply stated remembering the sorting hats song every year. A few students giggled.
"Don't dis the hat." Imani said as she stepped onto the Gordian knot. Imani felt the same butterflies in her stomach that she had when she walked up and sat on the stool before the sorting hat was placed on her head. All the students hushed.
Imani looked at all the statues waiting for one of them to move. It didn't take long but it felt like a century. The first to move was the Thunderbird which beat it's wings powerfully and the students behind it cheered. It was however closely followed by the Wampus's roar. The Wampus students cheers joined in. But the statues weren't finished. A gleam caught Imani's eyes as the Horned Serpent's carving on it's head glowed. Imani was shocked she was just expecting one statue to move. The cheers of the Horned Serpent students were heard. Imani looked back at Agilbert surprised and the mans face reflected his own and his eyes were drawn to something behind Imani. Turning back Imani saw the Pukwudgie statue had raised it's arrow. More cheers joined and the cheers turned into a roar of noise. Imani's eyes were wide with surprise.
"Woah." She breathed. Agilbert stepped forward effectively silencing the students.
"This has only happens once a generation. You've been chosen by all four houses." Agilbert said quietly.
"I'm flattered." Imani said. She turned her gaze on all of the statues trying to get a feel of each one and turning Agilbert's words over in her head. 'Thunderbird: soul, Wampus: body, Horned Serpent: Mind, Pukwudgie: Heart.' Imani could barely make up her mind. She was glad she wasn't a student. Thinking carefully she remembered the Thunderbird had been the first to move, she felt drawn to that house more than the others. Not that she didn't like the others, she felt for each of them. But the pull to Thunderbird was stronger. She'd been told by Sirius, Remus, Arthur and Molly Weasley on different occasions, that she had spirit. Imani smiled at the memories.
"I choose…" Imani said and the students shuffled before deafening silence fell. "Thunderbird." Imani stated confidently. The students of Thunderbird cheered loudly.
Agilbert stepped forwards smiling.
"I can't tell you how rare that was. You indeed are a special witch." He said. Imani smiled a little in thanks.
"Thank you."
"The last person for that to happen to was President of the MACUSA." He said. Imani's eyes widened. "You my dear are destined for greatness." He quietly said. Imani was now beginning to feel uncomfortable, she rubbed the back of her neck. She thought that greatness had already happened. Surviving multiple Voldemort attacks.
"Students back to your classes please." Agilbert called noticing this. Soon the hall was empty apart from herself and Agilbert.
"Now for the tour. If you get lost find one of the Pukwudgies they'll point you in the right direction." He said Imani nodded relieved. The tour ended with her room and she got settled before making her way down to the food hall. Similar to Hogwarts it had four long tables down it and at the head a long table for the professors and headmasters. Imani noticed an empty seat near the headmaster at the professors table. She made her way down the hall to her seat.
Dinner was delicious although she felt Hogwarts food was just a little better, although that might have been her being biased. She also had a chat to a few professors. The charms professor she had a good conversation with, Charms having been one of her favourite subjects. She was also happy to Creature Care as a subject and spoke to the professor saying Hogwarts had it under a different name 'Care of Magical Creatures'. She was also happy to speak to the transfiguration professor. She was glad to hear almost every subject had a house winner at the end of the year along with a house cup. She made a mental note to refer that to Hogwarts.
The next few days were very busy for Imani. From planning what she was going to teach to the students and what age classes she would be taking to actually teaching them. The headmaster was happy over all with her plan and how she didn't want to talk in depth about Voldemort himself or her and her adoptive brother Harry. This wasn't talks about her life but about how to defend yourself. She'd thankfully been allowed to keep her phone so she could stay in contact with her family. She gotten some very strange texts from Stiles.
'Wake up.' These two words are what most of the texts contained.
'Sorry I missed your text bro do you need to talk?' She texted back. Confusion and worry seeping into her head.
'Sorry sis wrong person.' or 'typo I meant to send something else' is what usually was replied back.
Imani was sure something wasn't right but the money coming in for the talks was good. She also needed to get away from Beacon Hills for a little while, and she missed being able to be a witch without hiding it.
"One day Gaz. One day I'll be able to walk through my door, wand held proud and brew a potion in the kitchen." Imani said petting the owl as she sat at a desk in her rooms. She had two a entrance room that had a desk and a sofa with a window that framed a beautiful view. Then there was a considerably size bedroom with en suite coming off that. Gaz meanwhile loved being around other owls and divided her time between Imani's rooms and the school owlery.
Sighing Imani turned her attention back to the next days talk. The kids had finally learned she'd ignore any questions pertaining to her personal life. However when she turned back to her parchment and quill Imani frowned. Her words didn't make sense. Putting her quill on it's holder she sat back staring at her writing. It was her handwriting that was obvious but the letters were jumbled, words back to front and sentences twisted and rearranged.
"What in the wampus?" She whispered. Imani rubbed her eyes thinking she was just tired and was seeing things. Opening her eyes tentatively she lowered them to her parchment breathing a sigh of relief when the words were how they were supposed to be.
"Oh thank Merlin." She sighed leaning against her chair. "Well Gaz if that's not a sign that I should take a break I don't know what is." Imani said standing and stretching. As soon as she finished her phone buzzed with a text. Picking it up Imani opened it, seeing it was from Stiles.
'WAKE UP!' It read like all the others. Imani was getting more and more concerned. This wasn't just a typo. She decided to ring him.
"Come on Stiles pick up." Imani whispered feeling anxious and just wanting the ringing to stop and hear her brothers voice.
"Hello?" Stiles voice came on the other end.
"Stiles!" Imani nearly yelled relieved.
"Imani? Hi." He said unsure of why she sounded that way.
"I just wanted to check on you. You sent a text saying wake up. Well I'm awake what do you need?" Imani said trying to cover up the fact she was so anxious.
"I'm fine. Sorry did that happen again?" Stiles quickly answered. To quickly.
"Yeah I did. I don't mind. Just checking." Imani said trying to sound calm about it, but her body was tense. She started pacing around the sofa.
"Yeah I'm good. Just been having weird dreams lately." Stiles admitted he didn't even know why he said it. He wanted her to have a good time while away. For all he knew she was with her friends and he'd just ruined a catch up moment. He didn't even remember sending the text. It was like his school book. He was currently by his locker and Scott was stood next to him.
"Weird dreams? How are they weird?" Imani asked suddenly changing tone. Curiosity took over.
"Um you when you're having a dream and then you wake up but you're not sure if you actually did wake up? And that you might be in another dream?" Stiles asked trying to get what he thought into actual words. Imani thought it over.
"Yeah I know those. Not fun." Imani said having gotten a couple recently but not as severe as the ones she had when Harry was entering Voldemort's mind on accident.
"Woah really?" Stiles asked stunned.
"Yeah I had a couple during high school." Imani said. "So you're having those?"
"Yeah one way to tell is you can't read in dreams. I've been having trouble reading…" Stiles trailed off again not knowing why he was saying this. Scott was even giving him a strange look. Stiles turned away.
"Yeah I know that trick. Maybe the stress of school and what happened has gotten into your head? You know… loosing dad for a bit." Imani said just trying to set Stiles at ease. She knew what was happening was related to what happened in the vet clinic. But she couldn't say anything, as far as Stiles knew she knew nothing. Imani also knew the stress of that wasn't helping.
"Yeah maybe." Stiles said sighing. He kept forgetting that she didn't know anything but he wanted to keep it that way for as long as he could.
"Listen when I get back which should be soon anyway. How about you and I have a day of just sibling catch up?" Imani said.
"Yeah that sounds great." He responded. Finally sounding more relaxed.
"Great I'll let you know the day I'm coming back. But if you ever need to chat just call alright? Even if it's to check if you're having a dream. If you can't read than you can't dial me right?" Imani said smiling. Stiles chuckled a little.
"Yeah you're right. Thanks Imani." He said.
"All good bro." She said and the two hung up.
Scott was stunned at the change in Stiles when he spoke to Imani. They really did have that sibling connection. Her words alone got him to ease up, and even smile. Scott internally thanked Imani for her words, how she gave Stiles the time of day and didn't brush him off. Even when she was on holiday.
As soon as Imani hung up from Stiles she rang Deaton's number. Imani's heart rate had picked up again.
"Hello?" The man's voice came on the other end.
"Deaton." She said and he knew it was her.
"One moment." he said to step into a more private area. "What can I do for you?" He asked.
"It's Stiles. I think what you said would happen, is happening." Imani said. "The sacrifice is affecting them."
"How do you know? What's happening?" He asked wanting to know symptoms.
"Stiles kept texting me 'wake up' but claimed it was for someone else or a typo but it kept happening. When I rang and asked he said he's been sleeping badly and he never really knows if he's in a dream. The only way he knows for sure is if he can read something. But he's been having trouble reading as well."
"I see." He said
"And Deaton. Jut before he rang me I had trouble reading something I'd written." Imani admitted. That changed Deaton's demeanour.
"What?" He asked.
"In the trance I was in. I was connected to Stiles. I saw through his eyes. So I think there's a bleed effect of what's happening to him. I didn't sacrifice myself so I'm not effected like them. But whatever is happening to Stiles I can sense it." Imani tried to explain.
"Alright. When are you coming back?" He asked.
"I've got to finish up a few things. But I'll be coming back soon. Let me know if anything worsens." Imani said.
"I will. If there's an emergency can I call?" Deaton asked. He didn't know where she was or what she was doing. He just knew she was away from Beacon Hills for a little while.
"You can and I'll be there in seconds." Imani nodded. "Thank you Deaton. Bye." She hung up. Imani let out a breath and flopped onto her sofa.
"Heads up Gaz life's going to be crazy when we get back." Imani said looking up at the ceiling.
