Jay set a soccer ball on the ground and kicked it lightly to Drew, "Now kick it back to me."
Drew smiled and kicked it, "This isn't hard."
Jay shook his head and passed it back, "Not at all."
"This is better than when I play in school," Drew said.
Jay laughed, "Cause you're not running?"
Drew shrugged, "Probably."
They continued kicking it back and forth until Hailey stepped outside, "How's it going?"
"Good!" Drew yelled and kicked it harder to Jay.
Jay lunged, "Whoa," he laughed and stopped the ball with his foot, "Careful."
"Sorry," Drew laughed.
Hailey smiled and sat on the porch steps, "You have a good kick."
"Thanks," Drew said while running to the ball.
"Kick it with your toes this time," Jay demonstrated, "It'll go in the air."
Drew smiled and kicked the ball, "Hey! It went up this time."
Jay laughed and hit it with his head, "Nice job."
"Oh, do that to me!" Drew bounced on his feet.
"Jay," Hailey warned, "Not hard."
"I won't," Jay shook his head and backed up.
"Jay Halstead," Hailey stood.
"I got it," Drew smiled.
Jay kicked the ball sending it through the air…right into Drew's face. Drew stumbled backwards and landed on the ground.
Hailey ran over to him, "Are you okay?"
"Bud, I am so sorry," Jay said quickly and knelt next to Drew.
Drew sniffled and rubbed his face, "I…" he spit into the grass and his eyes widened at the blood, "Oh no."
"Crap," Jay grabbed his chin, "Mouth open."
Drew shook his head and held his hands over his mouth.
Hailey sighed, "Jay."
"Shut up, Hailey," he whispered and tried pulling Drew's hands away, "Let me see, Drew."
Drew started crying and shook his head faster.
Hailey sat behind him and gently pulled at his hands, "Shh, shh, you're okay," she held his hands in his lap and kissed the back of his head.
Jay opened Drew's mouth, "Did a tooth come out?"
Drew ran his tongue through his mouth and shook his head.
Jay noticed one tooth that was sticking slightly out and bleeding. He lightly touched it, "Just one wiggly one."
Drew pulled back, "Don't."
"Let's go get a popsicle and a washcloth," Hailey stood with him and led Drew inside.
Jay sighed and sat on the grass, his head in his hands. He felt horrible and didn't know how he could make it up to Drew. He thought for a few minutes before taking out with phone and calling Will.
He picked up on the second ring, "Hey, I'm at work, but-"
Jay groaned and ended the call, tossing his phone into the grass.
Inside, Hailey had Drew seated on the counter and was looking inside his mouth, "You're going to be okay."
Drew sniffled and nodded before putting the popsicle back in his mouth.
Hailey took the bloody washcloth and threw it in the laundry room. She went back to the kitchen and helped Drew to the ground, "You've lost a tooth before, right?"
Drew nodded, "I don't like it though."
"Why?" Hailey leaned against the counter.
"It's scary. It's my body, I don't like when it comes out," Drew shrugged.
Hailey laughed softly and nodded, "Fair enough."
She looked out the window and saw Jay still sitting in the grass. She sighed and walked out, "Hey."
Jay ignored her and continued staring at the ground.
"Jay," Hailey said and walked toward him, "It was an accident. He's fine. We can handle a wiggly tooth." When Jay still didn't acknowledge her, Hailey knelt in front of him, "Jay, I'm talking to you," she reached out and set a hand on his leg.
Jay's head shot up, but his eyes were dark against his paled skin and he blinked in an effort to register her.
Hailey shook her head, recognizing the look, and hugged him tightly against her, "I'm here. It's Hailey – your wife. Jay, we're in the backyard."
He breathed shakily against her shoulder and gripped her shirt.
"There you go," Hailey whispered, "Doing such a good job for me," she rubbed his back, "Do you need my heartbeat?"
Jay shook his head and slowly sat back, "Sorry," he whispered.
Hailey set a hand on his neck, "Don't be. I shouldn't have left you."
"Don't blame yourself," Jay rubbed his face, "It was just a small one."
Hailey sighed and ran a hand over his hair, "What caused it?"
"I hurt him, I did that, Hailey. I-I," he groaned and put his head in his hands again, "I can't hurt kids. I need to be more careful."
"It was an accident," Hailey whispered.
"I've had too many accidents," Jay snapped.
Hailey set a hand on his back, "Breathe right now. You need to breathe. Don't slip away from me again. Drew's inside right now; he's completely fine."
Jay shook his head and started breathing harder.
"Look at me, look at me," Hailey said softly and tilted his head up, "Relax."
Jay bit his lip and stuck his hands in the grass.
Hailey ran her hands over his arms, "Keep breathing."
"I'm trying," Jay whispered.
"You're doing a good job," Hailey smiled.
"I-I-I'm not," Jay stuttered.
Hailey shook her head, "Don't think like that."
The backdoor opened and Drew walked out, "What's going on?"
Hailey glanced behind her, "It's okay, can you go wait inside please? We'll be there in a minute then we'll order dinner."
Drew came closer, "What's wrong?"
"Drew," Hailey turned completely around, "Go inside."
Jay closed his eyes and rubbed his face.
"Dad, are you okay?" Drew asked.
"Now," Hailey said harshly.
Drew swallowed and hesitantly walked back to the house before changing his mind and staying still outside the door, "Dad looks upset."
"Please go inside," Hailey repeated quietly.
Drew stared at Jay for a minute before going back into the kitchen.
Hailey turned back to Jay and set her hands on his knees, "Breathe."
"I scared him," Jay mumbled.
"You didn't," Hailey shook her head and rubbed her thumb under his eye, "Focus on you right now. Drew is fine."
"What about all those other kids I've killed?" Jay asked under his breath.
Hailey swallowed against the lump in her throat, "Jay, you can't let those past accidents distract you from the now."
Jay returned his head to his hands and groaned.
Hailey gently took one of his hands and set it over her heart, "I know it's not your favorite thing, but we're doing this right now. Breathe with me."
Jay weakly laughed and shook his head, but still matched his breathing to Hailey's.
"There you go," Hailey smiled, "We can do this. We can move forward."
"We can," Jay breathed.
Hailey nodded, "Together."
Slowly, Jay felt like he could move again and shakily stood with Hailey's help.
"I've got you," Hailey whispered and walked with him inside, "Want to nap?"
"No, no, I should talk to Drew. I need to apologize," Jay said as he opened the door.
"I don't know if now's the right time," Hailey set her hand on his back and walked into the kitchen with him. She closed the door behind her, "You're still really tense. I don't like when you push yourself this soon after an episode."
"Hailey, I hurt him," Jay said quietly, "I can't ignore that."
"I know," she whispered and held out a chair for him, "But drink some water first."
"I'm fine," Jay shakily walked into the living room.
"You're not," Hailey followed him, "And that's okay."
"I need to apologize," Jay said again.
"You need to take care of yourself," Hailey reached out and tried to steer him toward the couch.
Jay shook her hands off of him, "Hailey."
"Shh," Hailey stepped forward and set her hands on his shoulders, "Look at me and breathe."
"I can't until I know he's okay," Jay said quietly.
Hailey shook her head and helped him sit on the couch, "He is. Please believe me."
"I'm okay."
Hailey and Jay turned to see Drew standing on the stairs.
"Drew," Hailey said and stood.
"Hailey," Jay breathed and set a hand on her arm, "Please. You don't need to protect me."
Drew walked down the stairs and came in the living room, "I'm okay, Dad, but you don't look okay."
Jay nodded slightly, "You're right, I'm not."
"Why?" Drew sat in the recliner.
Hailey sat back down on the couch and rubbed Jay's arm.
"Um," Jay swallowed, "Well, like I told you before, I saw some really horrible things while I was a Ranger and seeing you hurt because I did something wrong made me remember those horrible things."
"I'm sorry," Drew whispered.
Jay shook his head and moved to sit on the coffee table in front of him, "Do not apologize. It was not your fault at all. Bud, I'm the one who's sorry, I kicked the ball too hard and hurt you. I'm so sorry."
"I'm okay," Drew repeated, "I'm not lying."
Jay chuckled, "Thank you."
"Can I hug you?" Drew asked quietly.
Jay nodded, "I think I need that."
Drew hugged him tightly, "I'm sorry bad things happened to you."
Jay squeezed his eyes closed and set his hand on the back of Drew's head, "Thank you."
Someone rang the doorbell and Hailey jumped up to answer it. She looked through the peephole and raised her eyebrows as she opened the door, "Will?"
"Hey," Will stepped inside, "Jay, what the hell?" he walked in the living room, "Are you okay?"
"What are you talking about?" Jay chuckled.
"You called me," Will sat on the couch, "And then hung up before I could say I was leaving work."
Jay thought and slowly shook his head. He patted his pockets, "My phone's not even on me."
Hailey crossed her arms, "Are you serious?"
Jay nodded, "I don't know where it is."
"You had it outside," Drew said.
Jay shrugged and walked in the backyard. He returned a minute later looking through his phone, "I…sorry."
"Can you please explain?" Will asked.
Hailey caught his eye and shook her head.
Will looked toward Jay and noticed his still shaking hands, "Oh."
Jay blushed and returned to his spot in front of Drew.
"Hey, I'm sorry," Will said softly and reached forward to lightly punch Jay in the shoulder, "Let me know if you ever need to talk."
Jay nodded and rubbed the back of his neck.
Drew looked between them and decided to break the silence by saying, "I have a loose tooth," he showed Will.
"Awesome," Will held his chin and looked, "Can I pull it out?"
"No," Drew stepped back, "Definitely not. It needs to come out on it's own. I hate it though. It's so gross. It's like my body's falling apart in front of me. I don't want to be a fossil."
Hailey laughed softly, "You will not become a fossil if your teeth fall out. All three of us have lost teeth before."
Jay nodded, "All of them."
Drew's eyes widened, "All of your teeth fall out?"
"Yeah, there's twenty that will come out," Will said.
"Oh no," Drew rubbed the side of his face, "Are you telling the truth?"
Will chuckled, "I am."
Drew sighed and slid down on the chair, "But I've only lost four."
"That just means you have sixteen left," Jay smiled a little.
"I'm too nervous for this," Drew groaned and covered his face with a pillow.
Hailey laughed, "There's nothing to be nervous about."
"Maybe we can pull that one out and the tooth fairy can come tonight," Will said.
"She's never visited me before," Drew mumbled.
Jay's eyes widened, "What?"
Drew sat up and shrugged, "Ms. Isabetta said the tooth fairy couldn't visit us."
"Well the tooth fairy comes here," Jay said and looked to Hailey.
She nodded quickly, "Definitely."
Drew bit his lip to hide his smile, "Really?"
"Oh yeah," Hailey said, "She'll be here, but you need to lose the tooth first."
Drew put a hand over his mouth, "I don't think I want to lose it yet."
"I used to pull Jay's teeth out," Will laughed.
Jay rolled his eyes, "That's true."
"But he would pull mine out too, so it was fair," Will said.
"My dad pulled mine out," Hailey smiled. She looked at Jay, "All good memories."
He smiled a little and squeezed her knee, "Good."
"Please don't do that to me," Drew said, his eyes wide in fear.
"No," Jay shook his head and lifted Drew onto his lap, "Only if you're okay with it. I promise."
Drew held up his pinky.
"Oh, a pinky promise," Will whispered, "This got serious."
Jay chuckled and linked his pinky to Drew's.
Will left before dinner, leaving Jay, Hailey, and Drew to eat their spaghetti by themselves.
Jay watched amused as Drew tried avoiding his loose tooth as he ate. "You're struggling," he chuckled.
Drew blushed, "I don't want to eat my tooth. The tooth fairy won't come if I swallow it."
"She'll come still," Hailey said and passed him a piece of garlic bread.
"But what will my proof be?" Drew asked, "What will I give her in return?"
"You'll have a hole in your mouth," Jay said through a mouthful of noodles.
Hailey rolled her eyes at him and gently kicked his shin.
"That sounds horrible," Drew bit into his garlic bread. He chewed until his eyes grew wide and he whined.
"What?" Hailey looked at her piece of bread, "Is it burnt?"
Drew quickly spit his food onto his plate, "It came out."
Jay looked at the plate and spotted the small white tooth on top of the chewed up bread, "Would you look at that."
Tears quickly formed in Drew's eyes, "I'm not okay."
"Okay, we can help," Hailey hurried to the sink and dampened a washcloth. She came back to the table, "Put this in your mouth like earlier."
Drew rubbed his eyes and sucked on the washcloth.
Jay used his napkin to pick up the tooth, "Pretty cool, Drew."
"It's not," Drew whined.
"It's okay," Hailey said softly and rubbed his back, "Hold onto the washcloth."
Jay brought the tooth to the counter and set it in a safe spot, "We'll put this under your pillow tonight."
"That's gross," Drew shook his head, "And I'll lose it!"
"We can put it on your nightstand," Hailey said, "Stop talking though, let the washcloth clean your mouth."
Jay smirked and shook his head.
Drew left the washcloth in his mouth and scratched his arm.
Jay looked at him and raised his eyebrows, "You know better."
Drew groaned and held back onto the washcloth.
Jay nodded, "Thank you." He took Drew's plate, dumped it off, and put more food on it before giving it back to him.
Hailey sat back at the table, "This is exciting, Drew," she smiled, "I'm so happy for you."
Drew blushed and swirled his fork around in the sauce.
"It is exciting," Jay said, "You're growing up."
Drew mumbled through the washcloth and sighed.
"We can't hear you," Hailey laughed softly.
Drew set the washcloth on the table, "I don't want to grow up. I like being little."
Hailey smiled sadly, "You're still seven though, you do have a long way to go."
Drew smiled back and started eating again.
Before bed, Drew insisted on writing a letter to the tooth fairy and set it on his nightstand with the tooth. He quickly fell asleep, leaving Jay and Hailey scrambling to figure out what the tooth fairy would do.
"How much would you get?" Hailey asked.
Jay pulled his pajamas on, "Fifty cents."
Hailey raised her eyebrows, "You're kidding."
Jay shook his head, "No. We'd get one of those fifty-cent coins per tooth. Once I got two knocked out at once so I got a special dollar coin."
Hailey laughed, "Of course."
Jay chuckled and sat next to her on the bed, "How much did you get?"
"A dollar," Hailey said and continued looking through her phone, "What do we reply to his letter?"
Jay shrugged, "What'd he say? Just explaining that he has a new home?"
Hailey nodded, "He said he was excited to meet her and that he hopes she has a good work day."
Jay laughed, "Always polite."
Hailey smiled before sighing and setting her phone down, "I'll just wing it."
"Pun intended," Jay smirked.
Hailey rolled her eyes and laughed, "Oh shush.
Jay chuckled and kissed the side of her head, "You're a good mom."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled and stood, "I'll give him a dollar for this tooth then four more singles for his other ones and I'll write a reply."
"Going all out," Jay followed her into the hallway.
Hailey blushed, but still had a small smile on her face as she hurried downstairs and returned a minute later with five dollars in her hand, "Wish me luck."
"Good luck," Jay chuckled softly and stood in the doorway of Drew's room watching him sleep as Hailey swapped the tooth for the money and quickly wrote a reply on the letter.
She snuck out of the room and let out her breath, "That was scarier than a sneak and peak."
Jay laughed and led her back to their bedroom, "You did good though."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled and turned off the lights.
Jay hesitated before getting into bed and glanced to the closet.
"I got it," Hailey said softly and grabbed his weighted blanket. She carried it to the bed and got under it with Jay, "I can be the big spoon tonight."
Jay shook his head, "It's okay," he turned and held her in his arms, "Just stay here, please."
"No where else I'd rather be," Hailey whispered and reached up to kiss his chin, "I've got you. Always." Her hands were soft as she rubbed them up and down his arms and lightly traced his chest as he fell asleep.
Hailey and Jay were startled awake just past 6am when they heard Drew yell, "She came!"
Jay chuckled and rubbed his face, "Oh god."
Drew ran into their room with the money and the letter, "Look what I got!"
Hailey propped herself up on her elbow, "That's so cool, bud."
Drew climbed on their bed, "Dad, Dad, look at this."
Jay smiled and read over the note Hailey had written taking in the extra swirls, dots, and stars she had added, "You're pretty lucky."
"I know!" Drew's eyes were wide with excitement.
Hailey smiled, "Want to lay down with us for a little bit before we all get up for work?"
"Sure," Drew squeezed his way between them; holding the letter above him, he stared at it, "This is the coolest thing I've ever gotten."
Hailey smiled and hugged him to her side, "I'm so happy that you're happy."
"She finally came," Drew breathed and shook his head.
Jay smiled as well and lightly kissed the top of his head, "I'm glad that she did."
Drew nodded and hugged the letter and money to his chest, "Thank you," he whispered.
A/N: Okay, I really like this one :) I hope you do too! It ended up not being as fluffy as I had originally planned, but I'm still really happy with how it turned out. I'm hoping to get one more chapter out before I leave on Sunday! Fingers crossed :)
