DEGRASSI: GLORY DAYS - S01E20 - WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

DISCLAIMER: I DON´T OWN DEGRASSI

1. Int. Michelle´s House. Evening

Michelle is getting ready to go out and is dressed to party. She´s in the kitchen making an omelet for herself and drinking a beer, while dancing to "I Say a Little Prayer For You" by Dionne Warwick playing from the radio. She sings in to a spoon.

Michelle:

The moment I wake up

Before I put on my make-up

I say a little prayer for you

The doorbell rings and she looks surprised. She puts her microphone spoon down and goes to see who it is.

We cut to her opening the door. It´s Trish, who looks like she´s been crying.

Michelle:

Oh, no.

Trish:

He said that he doesn´t have a daughter anymore.

Michelle:

Come in.

We cut back to the kitchen. Trish is sitting at the kitchen table, while Michelle saves her omelet from being burned by transferring it to a plate.

Michelle:

Do you want half of this?

Trish:

I´m not hungry.

Michelle:

How about a beer? It could help to calm you down.

Trish:

That wouldn´t be the worst, I guess.

Michelle drinks the rest of her beer and gets them two fresh ones from the fridge. She opens them and hands one to Trish before sitting down with her. Trish takes a sip and makes a face.

Trish:

So that´s what beer tastes like.

Michelle:

The taste grows on you. I wasn´t crazy about it in the beginning either.

Trish:

I´m sorry, I came here like this.

Michelle:

I´m glad you did. It proves that we´re friends now. Kat isn´t the only one you can count on, when you need it, you know?

Trish:

I´ve been wandering around thinking and driving myself crazy. I´m pretty sure, I´ve been kicked out.

Michelle:

You can stay here for as long as you want. It would be nice to have someone here. Things get lonely sometimes.

Trish:

It´s only for a few months, until I leave for college.

Michelle:

Well, mi casa es Su casa.

Trish:

Thanks. Are you going out?

Michelle:

I was going to a club, but we can stay here and talk, if you want.

Trish:

Actually, I´m thinking that a night out would be a good way to get my mind off it.

Michelle:

You know what they say, you can´t party on an empty stomach. I can´t eat that entire omelet myself, anyway. What do you say?

Trish:

I say, I´m glad I have great friends in you and Kat.

Michelle:

Cheers.

They toast and drink. Trish makes a face again. It´s clearly not her favorite drink.

OPENING CREDITS.

2. Int. Cab. Evening.

The two girls have got into the cab in the backseat. The cab driver is a woman in her forties.

Cabbie:

Where to?

Michelle:

16 Phipps Street. A club named David´s.

Cabbie:

You´re sure that´s where you want to go?

Trish:

Have you heard of it?

Cabbie:

It´s already the most notorious club in the city. Have you seen the types, that go in there?

Michelle:

That´s why I wanted to go.

Cabbie:

Suit yourself.

The cabbie starts driving.

Trish:

What kind of place are you taking me to?

Michelle:

It´s Toronto´s first punk club. They have punk bands on until midnight, then it´s a gay disco for the rest of the night. I´ve never been to a punk show before, I hear it´s totally crazy.

Trish:

I´ve been to one.

Michelle/Cabbie:

You?

Trish:

In Seattle with that girl Courtney.

Michelle:

Do you remember what the band was called?

Trish:

The Vaginal Warts.

Cabbie:

You kids today!

She shakes her head at them. Michelle seems impressed with Trish´s unexpected worldliness.

3. Ext. Restaurant. Evening.

Sandra comes out from her shift at McDonald´s. Mike is standing by his car, waiting for you.

Sandra:

You´re still allowed to come in, even if you don´t work here anymore.

Mike:

It still has the stench of my defeat on it.

Sandra:

Are you gonna be in that mood tonight?

Mike:

I´ll try to cheer up.

They kiss.

Sandra:

What´s with the bad mood?

Mike:

It´s official. I´m flunking Senior year.

Sandra:

Are you giving up already?

Mike:

It´ll take a miracle. We´re talking a B average in my finals. We both know that´s not gonna happen. I told my dad.

Sandra:

What did he say?

He lifts his short to show her the welts down across his side. Sandra winces.

Sandra:

Does it hurt?

Mike:

It still stings.

Sandra:

You can´t let him do this to you.

Mike:

Where else am I gonna live?

Sandra:

I´m afraid, he´ll seriously hurt you.

Mike:

You and me both. What do you feel like doing?

Sandra:

Nothing too crazy. I´m a little beat.

Mike:

We could go to a movie.

Sandra:

We haven´t seen "Smokey and the Bandit" yet.

Mike:

You have yourself a date.

They get in to the car.

4. Ext. David´s. Evening.

Trish and Michelle are waiting in line. They stick out like a sore thumb among the punks, Rastas and hippies.

They reach the front of the line. The doorman is a bald guy with skull tattoo and lots of tattoos all over his arms. He´s holding a magic marker.

Doorman:

Hands.

Michelle:

We´re old enough!

Doorman:

Yeah, right.

They stretch out their arms and he puts an X on the back of the hands. They head inside.

Trish:

What´s with the X?

Michelle:

It´s to show that we´re not old enough to drink.

5. Int. David´s. Evening.

They reach a table, where two punk girls are sitting. One of them has a huge mohawk.

Girl #1:

5 bucks each.

Michelle and Trish get their money out and pay.

Michelle:

How do you get your hair to stand up like that?

Girl #2:

Copious amounts of hairspray. Are you thinking of getting one?

Michelle:

I prefer being able to get into my car.

Michelle and Trish walk in to the foyer. They´re impressed by the sight of a winding staircase leading upstairs, encircling an old fountain. In the middle of the fountain is a replica of Michelangelo´s David sculpture.

Trish:

They didn´t have anything like this in Seattle!

Michelle:

Must be where the name comes from.

Axel and Mira come up to them. Michelle fakes a smile for him.

Axel:

We were starting to fear, you wouldn´t show up.

Mira:

Who´s your friend?

Michelle:

This is Trish. Trish, this is Axel and Mira.

Trish:

Hi.

Michelle:

We´re getting something to drink.

Axel:

We´ll be right here waiting for you.

Michelle and Trish leave them.

Trish:

They seem nice.

Michelle:

Whatever they ask you to do, say no.

Trish:

What do you mean?

Michelle:

Trust me on this.

They head in to the venue itself.

6. Int. Cinema. Evening.

Sandra and Mike are waiting for the movie to start with the others. Sandra is looking very comfortable, but also very tired. She´s almost about to nod off, when Mike notices something.

Mike:

Check it out.

She comes to and looks at what he´s pointing at. It´s Harvey sitting a further down, next to a pretty girl about his own age.

Mike:

Looks like Harvey´s got a side project.

Sandra:

Since when are you a gossip girl?

Mike:

It´s just good for him, is all I meant.

Sandra:

It´s good, that he´s cheating on Michelle?

Mike:

He told me, they´re not exclusive.

Sandra:

They can do it with other people as they please?

Mike:

I guess so.

Sandra:

Is that what you want?

Mike realizes, that he´s stepped in it. She stares him down for several seconds, until he comes up with an answer. The woman sitting next to him is looking at him too.

Mike:

Why would I want anyone else, when I have the best girlfriend in the world?

Woman:

Nice save.

Sandra looks like she forgives him. He eases up.

7. Int. David´s. Evening.

Axel, Michelle, Mira and Trish are standing by the fountain.

Axel:

I´m disappointed in you, Michelle.

Michelle looks uncomfortable

Michelle:

Why?

Axel:

You never told me, you had such a gorgeous friend.

Michelle eases up.

Mira:

You could be a model, if you wanted to.

Trish:

You´re nice to say so, but I´m no one special.

Michelle sees what they´re trying to do. They hear music starting up from inside. Michelle takes Trish´s hand.

Michelle:

We should go inside.

Axel:

We´re going to the bathroom first.

Mira:

Are you coming?

Michelle:

Nah. Maybe later.

Mira and Axel leave them.

Trish:

Are they going there to do drugs?

Michelle:

You deciphered his clever code.

Trish:

Why did they ask you to come?

Michelle:

I´ve done Cocaine with them a few times. It´s not something I´m proud of.

There´s a few moments of awkward silence.

Trish:

A friend of mine in Wasaga Beach tried it. He said it was the best feeling, he´d ever had.

Michelle:

I can´t lie. It´s a great feeling the first times you do it.

Trish:

Maybe we should join them.

Michelle:

Trust me, you don´t want this. You´re the glimmering light among the misery, the one of us with a great future to look forward to.

Trish:

It doesn´t feel that way.

Michelle:

It will again. Chemical happiness isn´t real happiness.

Trish:

I smoked weed in Seattle. That´s a drug.

Michelle:

Then I´ll see if I can score some weed. As long as you´re not putting anything up your nose or in your arm.

Trish:

You´re acting like a cool mom right now. It´s cute.

Michelle:

It´s only because I care about you. Can I ask you something?

Trish:

Shoot.

Michelle:

Why did you come to me in stead of Kat?

Trish:

I knew she´d want to spend hours talking. I love her, but that´s the last thing I need right now.

Michelle:

Does that make me your "fun friend"?

Trish:

I´ve never thought of you as boring.

They smile at each other.

9. Int. David´s. Evening.

A concert is underway. "The Ugly", a punk quartet, are rocking away on stage. They´re playing a cover of "Pretty Vacant" by The Sex Pistols, while the true punks are going crazy in the mosh pit in front of the stage.

We cut to Dave Claypool, Michelle and Trish are passing around a joint and looking on in amazement.

Michelle:

How many black marks do you think, they´ll have tomorrow?

Dave:

Hundreds. It´s the decline of civilization happening in front of us.

Michelle:

It´s has to be a crazy adrenaline rush.

Dave:

Are you thinking of going up there?

Michelle:

Maybe.

Trish takes a puff of the joint and coughs. She hands it off to Dave.

Dave:

Are you okay?

Trish tries to focus.

Trish:

That´s some good weed, you got there.

Michelle:

Are you high?

Trish:

As a kite!

All three of them start laughing. A bouncer comes over to them.

Bouncer:

You can´t smoke that in there!

Dave looks freaked.

Dave:

Sorry, dude.

Bouncer:

Unless you give me a puff.

Dave eases up. He hands the joint to the bouncer.

Dave:

Keep it.

Bouncer:

Have a good evening.

The bouncer takes a puff and leaves them.

Dave:

This is an awesome place!

They see that one of the punks has climbed on stage. He does a stagedive and crowd surfs a short distance, before he´s led down. Michelle´s jaw has dropped in amazement.

Michelle:

I have got to try that!

Dave:

Let´s go.

Michelle:

Now?

Dave:

There´s no time like the present.

Trish:

You guys go. I´ll stay here and try to realign.

Michelle looks her in the eyes.

Michelle:

Watch out for strangers, okay? I want to get you home in one piece.

Trish:

I can handle myself.

Michelle:

If some creep hits on you, come and find us. Dave can pretend to be your boyfriend.

Dave and Michelle head towards the stage.

Dave:

How do you know, I didn´t come here to score?

Michelle:

You´re hanging out with me, your best friend´s ex. I´m persona non nookie to you.

Trish is almost knocked over by a guy headbanging like crazy with his friends.

10. Ext. Cinema. Evening.

Mike and Sandra come out of the cinema with the other movie goers.

Sandra:

What did you think?

Mike:

It´s Burt Reynolds and fast cars. How can it fail?

Sandra:

We can´t complain, that we weren´t entertained.

Mike:

Where to now?

Sandra:

I´d like to go home and sleep, if that´s okay.

Mike:

You´re making me entertain myself?

Sandra:

If everything else fails, you always have mr. Handy.

Mike:

I knew, I shouldn´t have told you that.

They head towards the parking lot.

11. Int. David´s. Evening.

The band finishes a song and walks off stage. The crowd begin yelling for an encore.

We cut to Trish, still standing by herself. Michelle and Dave, both drenched in sweat, come up to her.

Michelle:

Did you see my dive?

Trish:

You´re nuts, you know that, right?

Michelle:

Bonkers and proud of it. We´re getting some fresh air outside. You wanna come?

Trish:

I need to use the girl´s room first.

Michelle:

Come out when you´re done.

12. Int. Hallway. Evening.

Trish is at the back of the queue to the ladies room. Mira comes up behind smile when they see each other.

Mira:

What did you think of the concert?

Trish:

Pretty crazy. It was only my second punk concert.

Mira:

That´s still one more than me.

Trish:

That was your first?

Mira:

It won´t be my last. This is real mother-effing rock n´ roll again!

Trish:

The music is still, shall we say, growing on me. But I love the whole culture and how free it is.

Mira:

Do you?

She closes one nostril with her finger and inhales through the other one.

Trish:

Who doesn´t these days?

Mira:

You´ll like the stuff I´ve got.

Trish regrets her lie already.

13. Ext. David´s. Evening.

Michelle and Dave are outside the club. Michelle wrings her hair and a little sweat falls on the ground. She tries to straighten it out. Dave smiles at the sight of it.

Michelle:

You don´t have to tell me, I´m disgusting.

Dave:

I´ll never call you disgusting. I probably smell worse than you do.

Michelle:

We smell natural. Where´s the harm in that?

Michelle smells her armpits and makes a face.

Michelle:

A little deodorant wouldn´t hurt.

Dave:

Then we wouldn´t blend in!

They laugh together.

14. Int. Bathroom. Evening.

Mira and Trish are waiting for one of the two stalls to be free. You can clearly hear someone snorting drugs from one of the stalls. A toilet flushes and a teenage girl comes stumbling out. Mira takes Trish´s arm and leads her in. Mira sits down on the toilet.

Trish:

I do actually have to pee.

Mira:

Me too,. One thing at a time, right?

She gets a make up mirror and a small baggie with a little cocaine in it out of her bag. She puts some on the mirror.

Mira:

Do you have a money note?

Trish:

Sure.

She gets a one dollar bill out of her wallet and hands it to her.

Mira:

Roll it up.

Trish:

I just thought you´d want to do it, since it´s your blow.

Mira:

I don´t care.

Trish rolls it up tight.

Mira:

Not that tight. We have to be able to snort through it, remember?

Trish loosens it a little bit and hands it to Mira, who´s prepared a line for them each.

Mira:

They might look small, but this is great coke. This will be the wildest high, you´ve ever had.

Trish:

You can make mine smaller, if you want more for yourself.

Mira:

No, it´s cool.

Mira snorts her line. She hands the mirror and the dollar note to Trish. Trish looks apprehensive.

Trish:

I´m only gonna do half of it. If it´s as strong as you say, I´d rather not risk getting sick.

Mira:

Suit yourself.

Trish snorts half of her line. She immediately looks very high and leans back against the stall door.

15. Ext. David´s. Evening.

Michelle and Dave have started to dry off.

Michelle:

Are we ready to go back in?

Dave:

Did you mean it, when you said "persona non nookie"?

Michelle:

You know, Harvey would hate it.

Dave:

He doesn´t have to know everything, does he?

They move in close to one another.

Michelle:

I can keep a secret, if you can.

They start making out.

16. Int. Mike´s House. Evening.

Mike comes into the kitchen. The light is on, but it´s eerily quiet.

Mike:

Mom?

He steps into the living room. He sees Tom sitting in front of the TV. Tom stands up and comes toward Mike, looking menacing.

Tom:

Your mother gave me lip tonight. She thought I was being hard on you. Do you think, I´m being hard on you?

Mike:

What did you do to her?

Tom:

You don´t answer a question with a question! Am I being hard on you?

Mike:

What do you want me to say?

Tom hits him hard across the mouth with the back of his hand.

Tom:

Answer my question!

Mike:

Yes, you´re a hard-ass! Where´s mom?

Tom:

Upstairs.

Mike rushes out of the living room.

17. Int. Mike´s House (upstairs). Evening.

Mike comes into his parents bedroom. His mother Diana is lying on the bed. She sees him come in and tries to hide her face.

Mike:

Are you alright, mom?

Diana:

I´ll survive.

Mike:

Let me see.

He sees that her face is swollen in many places. She´s clearly taken a beating. Mike is enraged when he sees her.

Mike:

Did he do this to you?

Diana:

You know how he gets, when things don´t go the way he wants them to.

He leaves her.

We cut to Mike´s room. He gets his baseball bat.

18. Int. David´s. Evening.

The band comes back on stage and the crowd cheers. The singer steps up to the microphone,

Singer:

You want another one?

The crowd cheers loudly.

Singer:

This is a song from a great band called "Dead Kids". It´s called "Sonic Reducer".

The band start playing.

Montage - Music: "Sonic Reducer" by Dead Kids, played by The Ugly.

We cut to Trish and Mira in the stall. Mira does half of what´s left of Trish´s line and hands it to Trish. Trish (who´s looking wasted enough as it is) does the rest of the line.

We cut to Dave and Michelle looking for a place to have sex. They find a relatively private place behind a dumpster and start making out..

We cut to Mike entering the Living room with his baseball bat. Tom only looks at him mockingly and easily dodges Mike´s first swings.

We cut to Mira and Trish, half walking, half staggering into the venue. Mira grabs Trish´s hand and leads her up front. The two girls start dancing very close to each other and Mira´s hands are soon fondling Trish´s back. Trish doesn´t seem to mind at all.

We cut to Dave and Michelle having very intense sex up against a wall.

We cut to Mike´s House. Mike swings at Tom, who manages to grab the bat. He kicks Tom in the stomach and approaches him with it.

We cut to Mira and Trish. Mira panics when she realizes that she´s holding an unconscious Trish up. She gently lets her fall to the floor. Axel grabs Mira´s arm and pulls her away.

19. Ext. Street. Evening.

Dave and Michelle have just finished having sex. Things are now awkward between them.

Michelle:

I know. We shouldn´t have done this.

Dave:

Trish is probably looking for us.

Michelle:

I´m the worst friend in the world!

Dave:

We better get back and find her.

20. Ext. David´s. Evening.

Dave and Michelle are coming back towards the entrance. She sees Axel and Mira rushing out.

Michelle:

Have you seen Trish?

Mira:

Not since you got here.

Axel and Mira leave in a hurry.

21. Int. David´s (Foyer). Evening.

Dave and Michelle come in. They see the bouncer from earlier carrying an unconscious Trish out. Michelle begins to panic.

Bouncer:

Move out of the way.

Michelle:

That´s my friend. What´s happened to her?

Bouncer:

It looks like a drug overdose.

Michelle begins to cry as the bouncer brings Trish outside. Dave comforts her.

22. Int. Hospital. Night.

Trish is rushed into the emergency room with Michelle in tow. One of the paramedics stops her from going further.

Paramedic:

Here to and no further, miss. We have to let the doctors do their job.

Michelle:

Is she gonna be okay?

Paramedic:

I can´t say.

Michelle is left looking helpless, as Trish is wheeled in to the emergency room.

Mike:

Michelle?

She turns to see a bruised and battered Mike approaching her. He has one of his arms in a sling, a black eye and is slightly limping on one leg.

Michelle:

Jesus! What happened to you?

Mike:

I got in a fight with my dad.

Michelle:

It must have been a big one.

Mike:

He didn´t think I´d fight back.

Michelle:

Is he in jail?

Mike:

He´s being operated on. I smacked him in the head with a baseball bat.

Even with everything Michelle has experienced this evening, that remark shocked her.

Mike:

He´s had it coming. Why are you here?

Michelle:

A friend of mine had an OD. Some days, you should have stayed in bed.

Mike:

Amen.

They look at each other with sympathy.

CLOSING CREDITS

Author´s note: This one was about as dark as it gets. I wanted to throw in places that actually existed in Toronto at the time. David´s was a real club located at 16 Phibbs Street. It was how I described it here, based on what info I found online. It´s not entirely historically correct, since we in the timeline are in May 1978 and the real club burned down on New Year´s eve 1977. The Ugly was the name of an actual band that played there, but since they never released anything, I had to choose famous Punk songs of the era for them to play. CBGB was a legendary Punk club in New York, for those of you who don´t know.
