Chapter 26-The Bridge
Bellamy, Wells, Jasper, Westley, Athena, Harper, and Monty were in a tent loading the guns. "There's 5 to a clip. Let's go. We need to get these guns on the wall," Wells says. He may not agree with this, but he knew they had to do it. "Why just five?" Monty asks. Murphy comes into the tent.
"We're running out of gunpowder," Athena says.
"We're so dead," Harper says.
"Don't worry, I got your back," Wells says. Harper smiles at her friend.
"We need as many rounds done by dawn as we can. It would be nice if Raven would help," Athena says as she looks at Murphy, Harper, and Wells.
"She's worried about Billy. She can't work if she's distracted. She's helping in the dropship," Murphy says. Finn comes in.
"It won't matter how many bullets there are if no one's left who can shoot," Finn says. They all look at him.
"What do we need to build a bomb?" Finn asks.
"Depends on what you're trying to blow up," Athena says.
"How about a bridge?" Finn asks. Athena looks at him.
"What are you talking about?" Westley asks.
"Drax says he crossed a bridge on his way back here from the grounders' camp. Sound familiar?" Finn asks.
"Yeah, so what?" Bellamy asks.
"So the virus is fast. He's already getting better. Blowing the bridge won't stop the attack, but the longer we can delay it, the more of us will be able to fight," Finn says.
"Even if Drax is telling the truth- and that's a big if- that bridge has survived a nuclear war and ninety-seven years of weather," Bellamy says.
"It won't survive me," Athena says. Athena leaves the tent.
Billy opens his eyes and sees Raven helping and Emma sitting beside him. "What you thinking about?" He asks his sister, who looks at him.
"How are you doing?" She asks him.
"I still feel like shit," Billy tells her.
"Lincoln's leaving, and he wants me to come. I don't know what to do," Emma says. Billy smiles as he looks at Raven then back at his sister.
"If it were me, I would go. Emma, Lincoln loves you. I say you should go. I would miss you like hell, but I know you would be safe and happy. But it's your choice," Billy tells his sister, who smiles.
"Rest," She tells him. He nods as he closes his eyes once more, and Murphy comes back.
Athena pours hydrazine in a glass jar as she wears a spacesuit. She closes the jar and takes off the helmet. "Ok, you can come in now," Athena says. Bellamy and Wells come in. Finn comes in after. "Boom," Athena says to Bellamy, making him jump a little.
"That's cute," He says to her.
"Relax. It needs an accelerant," Athena says. She picks up a jar of gunpowder. "Gunpowder," She says. She grabs a tin can and sets the hydrazine in it. "Container of hydrazine," She says before she grabs the gunpowder. "Put the gunpowder around the hydrazine," She says as she shows them and puts metal over the top of the can. "Hit the bull's eye. Win a prize," Athena says.
"That's the rest of our gunpowder we won't be able to make any more bullets," Bellamy says.
"Tonight we need a bomb," Wells says.
"We can worry about bullets tomorrow," Finn says.
"If we do this and it doesn't work, we'll all be dead tomorrow," Bellamy says.
"Then let's make sure it works. To be safe, you need to be at least 200 feet away to make the shot," Athena says.
"No problem," Bellamy says. "Which one of you plants the bomb?" Bellamy asks.
"I will," Wells says.
"I'll help," Finn says.
"You two won't pick up a gun, but blowing people up, that you two are ok with?" Bellamy asks.
"We're blowing up a bridge. There's not gonna be any people on it," Finn says.
"Finn, we have one bomb. We need to use it to kill as many of those bastards as possible," Bellamy says.
"They don't know we only have one bomb. If we did, why would we waste it on the bridge? I'm talking about deterrents, peace through strength," Wells says and Finn nods.
"The appearance of strength you mean," Athena says as she takes off the suit.
"Yeah," Wells says.
"Men who built the A-bomb thought they were peacemakers too. How'd that work out for them?" Bellamy says as blood starts to come out his nose. Wells, Athena, and Finn look at him.
"Don't touch anything," Athena says. Bellamy wipes the blood.
"Who else can take a shot?" Finn asks.
"Appreciate the concern. Make sure the bomb is packed and ready to go in ten minutes," Bellamy says as he leaves. Wells follows him out. Bellamy walks over to Jasper. "Jasper come here," Bellamy says.
"You need me to go with you to the bridge again?" Jasper asks.
"Stay back," Bellamy says.
"I need you to take the shot," Bellamy says just as Wells comes over.
"I can do it, Bellamy," Wells says.
"No, I can do it," Jasper says.
"Don't you have jobs," Bellamy says to a few of the hundred.
"If you miss. If that bridge doesn't blow, we're all dead. You got that?" Wells asks. Bellamy leaves. Wells looks at Jasper. "You sure about this? I can do it," Wells says.
"No, completely sure. I made a mistake, Wells. This is my chance to make it right," Jasper says.
"Ok, I'm with Jasper. Every step of the way," Wells tells Jasper, who nods. "Fine, Finn," Wells tells him. He nods. Wells looks at two of the hundred. "Don't just stand there, get him in the dropship," Wells tells them. They nod as they help Bellamy, who fell down.
Inside the dropship, Murphy, Octavia, Raven, Charlotte, and Emma were taking care of everybody. Drax was helping Connor. They brought Bellamy in. Octavia started to help him. Billy started to cough, and Emma and Raven started to help him.
Finn, Wells, and Jasper go into the work tent. "It's gone," Finn says.
"Monty, where's Athena?" Wells asks the teen.
"She left a while ago," Monty says.
"The bomb. She's planting it herself," Wells says. They start to leave and run. Monty stays.
Late in the night, everybody was sleeping except Murphy, Emma, and Raven. Octavia had left to get some sleep. Raven looks at Murphy. "Drax," She says. Murphy looks at her and nods. Murphy walks over to Drax and wraps his hands around his throat. Drax opens his eyes, but Murphy increases the pressure killing him. Murphy lets him go and walks away. Emma and Raven nod. About an hour later, Clarke was helping Bellamy. Billy gets up. Clarke and Bellamy were talking. Clarke was walking outside.
"Where are you going?" He asks her.
"Getting everybody inside. Just in case," Bellamy says.
"No. We don't need more people getting sick. I know the plan. Murphy told me. They can do it. If the bomb doesn't go off in half an hour, everybody comes inside," Billy says. Clarke nods.
The Bridge.
Athena was at the bridge. She was sick, but she kept moving. She drops her gun and falls. "Thank god," She says. She grabs the hydrazine and gunpowder. Drums start as the others run through the woods. Athena makes the bomb and seals it.
"Athena!" Wells yells.
"She's still holding the bomb," Jasper says. Wells and Finn were about to run. "No, she's got this," Jasper says. They nod.
"Line up the shot," Wells tells him as he and Finn run down the hill towards Athena. Finn and Wells get there just as Athena was about to shoot. They grab her and start to run. "Is the bomb ready?" Wells asks. Athena nods. They get in cover. Jasper starts to aim.
"Shoot, Jasper, Shoot!" Finn shouts. Jasper shoots once and misses. He shoots a second time and misses. He shoots three more times and misses all of them. Finn and Wells look up.
"You call that shooting?" Monty asks as he comes out of the woods with a gun.
"Monty? Last time was a fluke. I panicked," Jasper says.
"So what? You still made the shot, right?" Monty asks.
"Twice," Jasper says. "How many rounds?" He asks as Monty hands him a gun.
"Three, you got this," Monty says. Jasper shoots once again and misses. Wells and Finn start to move Athena. "Did you not hear me say you got this?" Monty asks. Jasper shoots again and hits the bomb blowing up the bridge.
Back at the dropship, everybody looks at the mushroom cloud. "They did it," Bellamy says.
"I told you," Billy says.
With Emma
Emma walks into the cave, and Lincoln looks at her. "We had to stop the attack," Emma says.
"Look, there is so much more you don't understand. The mountain men, they'll come, and they'll kill us all. We have to get out of here while we still got the chance," Lincoln says.
"The mountain men? You mean the drawings in your book?" Emma asks.
"Yeah. Now let's go. We got a lot of ground to cover before dark," Lincoln says.
"I'm not going with you," Emma says. Lincoln stops and looks at her. Emma reaches in her bag and holds out Lincoln's journal. Lincoln grabs it.
"You'll die here," Lincoln says.
"Maybe," Emma says.
"Why?" Lincoln asks.
"You just said they're my people. I'm sorry," Emma says. She kisses his cheek. "Good-bye, Lincoln," Emma says before she leaves.
The Dropship
Everybody was waiting for Jasper. "There! It's them, open the gate!" Monroe shouts. The hundred clap as they come in the gate. Finn brings Athena into the dropship, and Clarke follows. Billy walks over to Emma and hugs her.
"Why did you stay?" He asks her.
"Because we're family. These are our people," Emma says Billy nods.
"Once all this is over, we'll find him," Billy says.
"If we live," Emma says.
"We will, I know it," Billy tells his sister, who nods.
Monty sits with Athena. She opens her eyes and looks at him. "Hey," She says. Monty looks at her.
"You scared the shit out of me," He tells her.
"Sorry," She says.
"Don't ever do that again," Monty says.
"No promises," Athena says. Monty laughs and kisses her head. Athena smiles. She grabs Monty's face and kisses him. She smiles when she sees his face. "I'm gonna rest," Athena says. Monty nods as he leaves a huge grin on his face. Billy was looking at the 15 graves when Bellamy came out.
"15," Billy says.
"How did Drax die?" Bellamy asks.
"I had Murphy kill him. You have a problem with that?" Billy asks.
"Nope," Bellamy says. Billy nods as he leaves and walks into his and Raven's tent, where he sees her sitting on the bed looking down.
"What's wrong?" He asks her.
"You almost died," Raven says.
"Hey, I ain't going anywhere. I'm with you till the end," He tells her. Raven nods.
"I love you," She says.
"I love you too," He tells her. He kisses her and pushes her back on the bed.
