Reply: Bonnie was feeling guilty for basically knowing about Clay's plans and still didn't warn the group, so she's slowly trying to redeem herself and get everyone's trust.
Clem could hear the river rushing once she woke up in the morning, she could already see Kenny putting on his shoes, getting his weapons ready. Everyone else was already up, but they let her sleep in.
"What're we doing?"
Lee kneeled next to her.
"We're um... Going to bury Rosie's baby. Then we're going to make sure she's okay for traveling, so we can move out," he rubbed his eyes, clearly still tired.
"I thought we were going to wait until she feels better?"
"I know sweetpea. But we're running out of food, supplies. We gotta look for some. There's a storm coming and this place won't hold."
Clem thought about it. He was right, but did they all have to go look for supplies? Maybe only some of them could go while the others wait.
"I hate to interrupt, but she can barely walk! I vote we wait another day." added Kate, as she helped Rosie to her feet.
"I'm sorry Kate, but this is something we have to do. As soon as we're all ready to go, we're moving out,"
The group went back to ground level via the back door, since they destroyed the deck to protect themselves from walkers.
"Clem mentioned a town on the other side of the river. If we can get to the crossing, we might find something good," Mika was hopeful, in a better mood since losing Derrick. Despite losing him overnight.
"Okay, we can go to this so called town. I see the church from here, let's get a move on," Kenny led the way, following the stream of the river.
Snowflakes were clearly visible as they fell from the sky, and gently landed on the ground.
"Why did Jane leave? It ain't so safe out alone," said Bonnie, who was at the back of the group, making sure nothing got the jump on them.
"She was always acting all weird. Maybe it's for the best," Kenny retorted.
"It's not for the best! She may have a odd personality but she knew her way around the walkers, and that's just less firepower!" said Kate, who was by Rosie's side, who refused to believe her child was born dead.
"We've been managing just fine without her. Don't make it such a big fucking deal."
No one else wanted the situation to get heated so they were just silent. The river crossing was a old wooden bridge. It seemed durable. They all slowly crossed it. The town was a few hundred yards out.
"We can clear out one of the buildings and hold out there." advised Mika, as she looked towards the town, wiping the snowflakes from her glasses. She wouldn't be able to see barely anything without them, so it'll have to do.
"Your friend Kenny's been acting out of it. He's been barking at everyone, and that's not gonna end well," Bonnie told Lee, as she observed Kenny in the distance.
"He's been through alot. I know he's been acting sideways a little. I think once we find shelter he'll be the same old Ken," replied Lee. The last time he ever saw him in a good mood was when his family was alive.
The town was deserted. Several bodies layed on the ground, some of them walkers, but the rest had been put down, or devoured. The stench of rotting, human flesh came to the senses of the group.
"I.. I need to stop. I can't feel... Something..." Rosie sat down on a bench outside a ruined diner.
"Well get better soon, cause we ain't exactly safe out here in the open. Then again, there isn't anything here..." Kenny inspected the diner, once he made sure it was safe, they all moved in.
Clem wandered into the many rooms the diner had. She saw a couple of large boxes that had "Non perishable food" towards the side. She reached down to grab one of them, when she saw a couple of bodies in the next room.
She pulled out her gun, and slowly opened the door. It was a family, she thought. Two of them were sitting in a chair, with a gun in both their hands. There was a small cot next to them, with the bodies of 2 girls, about her age, she believed.
"If Lee hadn't found me, that'd would've been me.." she said to herself outloud. She was definitely grateful.
She took a deep breath and sighed. The scene itself was pretty brutal.
"Clem are you in here? I thought I heard something-" Mika pushed open the door, looking at the family.
"Oh my God..." she looked at the girls, who were holding hands. They were all together until the last minute.
"I found boxes of food, we should bring these back." Clem suggested.
"Y.. Yeah..." Mika shakes herself back to reality as she grabbed one of the boxes. The idea that she never got to see her family again after the outbreak started haunted her the first few weeks, but she got over it.
"Well, we got some food for tonight. That's a plus," said Mike, as the storm was in full swing. It wasn't really heavy, but it was snowing and raining.
"We'll check out the rest of these buildings, see what we can find. I don't think it's a great idea to stay here," said Lee.
"Why not? The river is close, we can scavenge for Food, I think it's a good deal." said Kate, as she tended to a small fire they made.
"Lee's right. We don't know who or what's in this town, and we might not be prepared for it," added Bonnie.
Rosie was sitting in the corner of the room, barely moving. She was pale, and weak. Mike carried her over to the fire, but she seemed to be in and out of it.
"Were you bit?" Asked Kate, as she examined her for bites or scratches.
"No... I'm... Just tired..." she hunched into a ball and started to sleep. They checked her for vital
signs, and she was still alive, just tired.
The next day, Lee and Mike headed into the buildings next to the diner. They didn't have any trouble clearing them out, most of the walkers in there were either already dead, or unable to move.
"What's the plan from here?" we've been talking about it but we don't have anything solid,"
"We should keep moving. Stay out of the cities, that's the deal. Maybe even find another community if we can." Lee was hoping they'd find another community. Ridgedale kept them alive for 2 years, until Clay changed.
"I don't man... I think we're the only ones up here. I mean it's like what, 30 degrees? That's pretty cold," Mike wiped some of the growing vapor from one of the windows.
"We'll pack u-" Lee's sentence was interrupted by a gunshot. He ran towards the exit but was stopped by Mike.
"The hell are you stopping me for?! Clem's out there!"
"If it's someone not friendly, we got the jump on them from here. Cmon!" the pair went to the second floor, and they positioned themselves on the windows, facing the street where the diner was.
They were a group of men and women, about 6 of them, with weapons. They weren't familiar, but they were checking every building within sight.
Kate went out the back of the diner, to flank them.
"What the hell is she doing?!" exclaimed Mike.
"She's onto something.."
The group saw her hiding, so they started firing rounds, which initiated a firefight between them. Since they were facing the diner, their backs were facing the pair, which gave them the advantage. They took down most of them, but the rest went into hiding.
"We gotta go Rosie!" exclaimed Mika, as she tried to pull her to her feet, but she wasn't budging.
"I can't... I'm too tired..." she moaned. Nobody knew why she was suddenly feeling so weak.
"That's her wish. Meanwhile, we gotta take out these assholes!" said Kenny as he was taking cover behind the counter, as they Begin to fire more rounds at them.
A bullet managed to graze him in the cheek, causing him to let out a yell of pain. Mika broke one of the windows, as she repeatedly fired back, hitting one of them in the throat. Clem was taking cover behind her, she didn't want to get hit too, but she wasn't just going to sit there and watch her group go down.
"Now Bonnie!" exclaimed Clem. She then came out of the back room with a assault rifle, and fired at the remaining men, eliminating any threat. The plan was to have them pinned down, then she'd come in to do the rest.
"Are you okay?!" asked Clem. Kenny's cheek had a large streak of blood from the bullet, but otherwise, he was okay.
"Yeah.. Fucker almost got me back there.. Now we gotta find out who these fuckers are.."
Clem and Mikaela helped Rosie back on her feet as the rest of the group reunited in the center of the street.
They seemed to be well armed, since they had weapons you'd only find in the military or something. One of them had several bullets, but was still moving around.
Kenny reached and roughly grabbed him from the throat.
"Who are you fuckers?! Answer!"
"We... Sanctuary..." he said with extreme difficulty.
"Huh? Sanctuary? Where?!"
"Down the... Railroad... East... You'll see... The sign..." he started to cough up blood, which usually meant he was in his last moments.
"Who's there?? Why you telling us this?!"
He took several deep breaths, and died.
"I'm guessing yall heard that?" he asked, still on his knee.
"Yeah. A sanctuary. If there really is one, I doubt they're friendly. I mean they did fire at us," said Mika, as they began to destroy their brains so they wouldn't turn.
"It's worth a shot. Rosie ain't doing so good, and neither will we if we stay out here any longer. I say we go for it," added Bonnie.
"What do you think Clem?" Lee asked her. Everyone's opinion counts, in the end.
"We should check it out. It might not be bad,"
"So down the railroad? I didn't see a railroad," commented Kate, as they gathered their supplies.
"We'll look for it. We just head east. If he wasn't lying, that is."
"What if its a trap? I mean what if they attack us?" Asked Rosie, who was feeling better.
"We'll handle it. Plus, we got these new guns to our disposal. Let's move out." The group continued into the town, taking out some walkers along the way.
The storm had passed, the sun was shining. The weather wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. They didn't know if they were still in South Carolina or back in Georgia, but they believed that the railroad would lead them back to Georgia, where it all started.
"You know Lee, I don't know if we could trust those guys.. But I guess you have the final word," said Bonnie.
"I asked for a opinion, and everyone seemed to agree with the idea of us checking it out. Don't worry, if it's trouble, we'll handle it, like always." he reassured her.
They walked for a while, until they stumbled upon a old hiking trail.
"These trails usually have maps. Keep a eye out," said Mike as he took a sip from the gallon of water they had. It was about 95 degrees, and walking with all the gear wasn't helping. The sudden change in weather wasn't nice either.
Bonnie found a old post with a map on it.
" This map says there's a old railroad, about 10 miles east, like the man said,"
"Does it say where we are?" Asked Clem.
"Nah. It does say that we're about 150 miles from Atlanta, and about 70 from Macon,"
"Isn't that where we were before?" Asked Clem, looking at Lee.
"Yeah. We know there's nothing there. We should just follow the trail, and stay away from Atlanta."
The group began to follow the path that had been marked on the map. It told them to follow the train tracks.
"This reminds me of the train we rode in to Savannah," said Kenny. He lost his family right before that, so it was a bad memory.
"I don't remember Georgia being this damn hot," panted Mike, who's shirt was drenched in sweat.
"You start feeling it once you have to walk around everywhere with no AC." Kate was on foot most of the time, so she was used to it.
"I really don't re-" Several bullets rang out, but they were off to the side. Someone was shooting at someone else or something else.
"Watch your backs.." They all pulled out their guns as they slowly approached the source, and the gunshots got louder. It was a group of people, who were cornered by walkers.
"We should go..." Rosie tried to slowly slip away but was pulled back by Mika.
"If you were the one cornered would you want to be left to die? I don't thinks so!" She pulled out her knife and began to take down the walkers with the rest of them. It took some time, but they managed to kill them.
"Thank God, you saved our asses." said one of the men, who was out of bullets.
"Are you guys friendly? We ain't taking a risk." Kenny was pointing his rifle at them, but Lee motioned for him to put it down.
"I mean, we're barely surviving out here. We barely got out of Marietta alive, we lost people back there. It's just us," said a woman, she had bright green eyes and light skin.
"Since we saved you, mind telling us your names?" Asked Bonnie.
"I guess so. I'm Lakela, this is Calais, Isaac, Brendon, Amanda and Dalvin." They appeared to have a pretty sturdy group, they seemed strong and they had good weapons.
"What're you guys doing deep in the woods? There's nothing out here," Asked Mika.
"Ever since we left Marietta, we've seen signs of a Sanctuary, somewhere along the way. We've been following the trail for a while," said Amanda. Her short frame wasn't the best, but she was still alive, which is all that matters.
"We're heading there too!" piped up Clem. The rest of the group just looked at her.
"If what she's saying is true, maybe we can team up to get down there alive? Extra company usually keeps the biters off us," said Brendon, who was wearing a old baseball cap, like Clementine.
"How can we know if as soon as we turn around you'll shoot us in the back?" Kenny seemed distrustful of the new group.
"If we wanted to do that, we would have by now. So cut the bullshit," said Calais. His 6'5 frame was certainly intimidating. It kind of reminded Clem of Derrick.
"We shouldn't waste time. I'm sure those weren't the only walkers in the area, and I don't want to count them out," Dalvin reached for their duffel bag, as they stepped out of the woods and went back on track on the railroad.
Lee felt confident. He always kept it to himself, but being so low on group members made him nervous, but the addition of new men and women certainly increased their survival chances.
Lakela walked up to Lee, who was leading the way along with Clem.
"I'm guessing your the leader here?"
"That sounds kind of like a dictatorship. We all vote on what we have to do. That's how we've made it so far."
"I don't know much about you all, but seeing how you have a girl and all, must mean you know what you're doing. Let's just hope this sanctuary is still around,"
"That's what we thought about Marietta.." said Dalvin.
"My babysitter was from Marietta. Did it get bad too?" Asked Clem. She remembered Sandra. The plan was for them to get to Marietta when the outbreak started, but she died within the first few days.
"The military locked it down after Atlanta got bombed. They set up refugee camps. They were around for a while, but then they got overrun, all of them. We were sort of going in and out of the city, but on our last run we got boxed in by a herd, which made us just run." said Dalvin. He always carried a sniper rifle with a night scope attached.
They all walked for the next few hours of sunlight that was left, which forced them to set up a small camp in the woods, next to the railroad.
"Since we're traveling together now, can we at least get to know each other?" Asked Amanda.
Dalvin and Brendon looked at her.
"There isn't much to it. We've found each other on the road, and we're still here. That's what matters," said Rosie. She was feeling depressed and sad after losing her baby.
"I was a teacher, up at UGA. I met Clementine when it all started. We've been together ever since." added Lee.
"Oh, I thought you were...?" Lakela began to put two and two together.
"I met Lee in the early days too. He's one tough bastard, though." Kenny smacked him on the back as he complimented him.
Bonnie threw in a old log to keep the fire going.
"I worked at the old Save Lots by Atlanta. Pretty far, I guess. I was with a old group, I was the only one who made it out," she was referring to Clay's group. She didn't really know if she was the only one still alive, but she didn't feel like giving out details at the moment.
"Feels like shit. Losing people and ending up on your own, barely surviving," added Brendon. He wiped his face with a cloth, trying to wipe some tears.
"I was a student before. A incoming college freshman. I didn't even get to see my dorm," added Mika.
"Weren't you in high school?" Asked Clem.
"You said it. Was."
"What's his deal?" Kenny motioned over to Dalvin, who was walking around the perimeter, rifle in hand.
"He's the big guns guy. He'll keep the walkers at bay," said Calais.
"Everywhere we've been he's always been the lookout. He's pretty good with the rifle." said Lakela. She sighed, but felt happy for some reason.
"Me and Lakela, we met since the start, like you and the girl. I was driving my way out of Macon when traffic got jammed. I went out on foot and i found her," said Amanda. She had a small scar on her shoulder, most likely from a injury.
They shared some of their stories for the next few hours, into the night.
" What do you think we'll find at this "Sanctuary?" Asked Mike. Dalvin let him borrow the rifle as it was his turn for watch.
"A shelter, where you don't have to sleep with your gun next to you. Somewhere where we can be safe." said Amanda. She was wearing a golden necklace with a star at the bottom.
"We just need a break from it all, that's it." added Kate. If they hadn't left with Lee and his group, her and Mike would most likely be dead, so they felt grateful.
They kept going their way the next morning. It wasn't as hot in the morning, so they left as early as possible. Lee was usually leading the way, Kenny walked up beside him.
"What do you think about these new people?"
"They seem alright. Why, worried?"
"I don't know man," he shrugged. "Alot of people have tried to wrong us damn every time."
Lee chuckled.
"Like Calais said, if they wanted to kill us, they would have. They're part of our group now."
They walked for a few more miles and they stumbled upon a old town. Maybe not a town, but they're were several buildings in the area.
"Seems like a good place to find food, maybe ammo." Dalvin took his rifle and loaded it.
"No, not the rifle." replied Lee.
"Why?"
"I wouldn't have a problem if it had a silencer, but you kill one you'll attract 20 of them. Keep it to close combat, use guns only if you have to." He told the whole group. They had to save ammo best way they could.
"It'll be quicker if we separate. Me and Dalvin got the corner one." Lakela motioned him over as they quietly entered the building.
"Me and you over there, we can check out that tower. It'll give us a good view of what's ahead too," said Brendon as he took out a machete from their pack.
"It's Mikaela, but whatever," she rolled her eyes as she head over.
"Me Kate and Mike can go get the other one," Rosie recommended. The building seemed empty, but you couldn't be too sure.
"That leaves all buildings occupied then.
Kenny went towards the railroad with Bonnie, not far from the group.
"I guess that means we hold down the area make sure nothing gets by?" Asked Calais.
"Yeah. Shouldn't be hard." Calais, Lee and Clem sat on the sidewalk next to one of the buildings.
"Sometimes it gets too quiet. I don't like it." said Clem. She had a pistol on her waist, but she rarely used it. Only in emergencies.
"I feel that. Always gotta keep your guard up." said Calais.
"the last time I was-" Lee's sentence was interrupted by the shuffling of a few walkers, coming from the railroad the way they came.
The trio got up, Lee and Calais taking most of them out. One of them slipped by, approaching Clem. She nervously pulled out her knife as it reached for her. She kicked it in the knee, knocking it to the ground, then killing it.
"Damn.. That was nice.." Calais congratulated her. Lee assured she was fine, as they shared a quick message.
"If they get too close, just do that. You did good."
They could hear gunfire coming from one of the buildings, specifically the tower. They ran in and saw that Brendon and Mika were cornered. They helped clear them out, but they only way out was by going up, to the roof.
Lee pulled out the rifle from the holster on his back and began to fire on the Walkers, Calais helping him. Once they were clear, he went back outside.
"We cleared them out, you can co-" a Walker was on the roof, unknowing to them, as it grabbed Mika, causing her to stumble around the roof.
Kenny and Bonnie came running, and several walkers were coming in on them.
"Fuck...Go!!" Lee told Calais to run upstairs to help, as he carefully aimed at the walker.
"Brendon's there!" exclaimed Clem. Brendon was trying to pull off the walker, but it seemed focused on what was already in it's hands.
Lee got a head shot, but it almost made things worse, as all its dead weight was on her, causing her to step off the roof. The walker fell to the ground, splattering it's guts over, while she was hanging onto the ledge for dear life.
"Don't let me fall... Please..." she cried out, as her grip wasn't stable.
"They're getting closer, cmon!" Kenny and Bonnie provided cover fire for them.
She lost grip in one of her arms, but Brendon managed to reach out and grab her hand. He nodded at her as he pulled her back onto the roof.
"We could use some help down here!" exclaimed Dalvin, who was now using his rifle.
"I thought you were gonna watch me die." said Mika, who was still catching her breath.
"We're a team. I'm not letting anything happen to any of us." he smiled at her as he handed her a weapon, they opened fire on the remaining walkers, clearing the area for the moment.
