Since I had my campsite verified as my new, official home, I kind of knew I would be spending a lot more time out in the weather. Through rain, thunder, and lightning, I've seen it all from the comfort of my site, as if all of my furniture was covered by some invisible tarp of something. I thought I had seen all that nature had to offer... until one particularly chilly day. I had invited Jill, Rosie, and Jack over for the day, expecting the typical teen baby fare.
"Hah... It's f-freezing cold out t-today, isn't it?" I asked.
"Yeah. It's really cold, even with my coat on!" Rosie said.
"I w-wonder why that is..."
"It is the first week of winter," Jack explained. "We're bound to have some chills throughout the week."
I began to shiver, promptly zipping up my jacket. I definitely didn't want to get a cold anytime soon. My gaze turned up towards the dark skies above, and something in particular caught my eye. It was a little white speck, falling closer and closer to the ground. Another one came down, then another, and then another. Soon, a lot of them were falling down. I just stared at them in awe. "Whoa..."
"Hmm?" Jack asked. He looked up too. "Oh, it's snowing!" he said with a smile.
"Wha-huh now? Snowing?" I asked in confusion.
Rosie and Jill just stared at me, their mouths wide in disbelief. Jack sighed, "Oh, Charlie... Don't tell me you've never seen snow before..."
"Well... No, at least not in real life," I told him. "It's always warm where I'm from... We never got snow before."
Jill came over and patted me on the back. "It's alright, it seems like now is the perfect time to show you." She dragged me out into the open to admire the white flurry. It was a true spectacle to behold. All the snow falling down in front of me shimmering with beauty. Some even landed on my nose. I wiped it off, smiling.
I looked over at Rosie and saw her tongue sticking out. "What are you doing?" I asked, confused.
"Catching snowflakes with my tongue," she explained. "You try it!"
I stuck my tongue out, and, sure enough, some snow fell onto there. I wasn't sure why it was a snow tradition, but I enjoyed it. "Hmm."
"Fun, huh?" Rosie asked. I nodded.
"Hey, Charlie!" I heard. I turned around and saw Jill... waving her arms and legs around for some reason. "Come make snow angels with me!"
"Snow... angels?"
Jill explained, "You just wave your arms and legs like this, and when you get up, it looks like an angel!"
"Ohhh..." I understood. I sat down in the cold stuff and started making a snow angel. It was actually super fun. I just wanted to lay there for the rest of the afternoon, making snow angels. After a while, I got up to admire my frozen masterpiece. "How's it look?" I asked.
"It looks great, Charlie!" Jill said.
Then, I heard Jack and Rosie yelling from across the yard. I wasn't sure what they were doing, but it looked like they were running around like maniacs. I paid little attention to them. From behind me, I heard Jack yell, "Look out, Charlie!"
"Huh?" I asked, bewildered. I turned around, and before I could react, I was pelted in the face with a ball of snow. I wet my diaper from the pure surprise. "Ack..." I muttered, my face completely freezing.
"You okay?" I heard Jack ask. I looked up and saw him with a scarf. He wiped the snow off my face.
I muttered, "Yeah, it's fine..."
"Rosie and I were having a snowball fight, and I guess she threw one your way by mistake," he explained. "Your face is probably frozen by now."
"Well, my face is, but my diaper definitely isn't!" I joked. We both laughed for a bit. "Anyway, you were talking about a snowball fight?"
Jack murmured, "That's right, you've never played one before... Well, you just grab some snow..." He grabbed a big clump of snow. "...pack it in..." He packed it into a sturdy snowball. "...and just chuck it!" Jack wound up his pitch and threw the snowball, beaning Rosie in the shoulder. "Just like that."
"You think you can get away with that throw that easily, don't ya?" I heard Rosie from a few yards away. She came running up, shrieking at the top of her lungs like a Spartan warrior, and dunked a giant snow pile onto Jack. "Ha! Take that!" She ran off, laughing to herself.
Jack shook the snow off and said in a serious tone, "So she wants a snow war, huh? I'll give her a snow war. Come on, Charlie."
"Okay. You too!" I called out. "Come on, Ji-"
Jack covered my mouth with his hand. "Are you crazy?"
"Hmm?" I asked, muffled.
"Trust me, you do not want her in this."
"O... Okay..." I was confused, but I obeyed Jack and kept away.
