Chapter 20: In my daughter's eyes

Callie's POV

This pregnancy had started beautifully: our baby was doing well, Arizona was so happy to carry our child and Sofia was so excited to meet her little brother or sister.

We announced the news to Sofia the same day we had passed the three months of pregnancy. That night we ordered pizzas and started eating them in the living room.

"Sofia," I began, "Mummy and I have some news to tell you."

"What's going on?" Sofia asked us, obviously a little panicked by what we were going to tell her. "Are you going to divorce one more time?"

"No darling," Arizona reassured her, "we're not getting a divorce. Don't worry, if we decided to get married again, it's because this time we'll stay together for the rest of our lives. Stop being afraid, Sofia."

"What we want to tell you," I continued, "is that we may have to move to another house."

"Why should we have to move?" replied Sofia, indignant. "This house is great, we can even barbecue here."

"We'll have to move for a simple reason," I explained, ""because in a short time, we won't have enough room."

"You're going to get separate bedrooms again?" Sofia wondered

"Not at all baby," Arizona tried to calm her, "we're gonna need an extra room because our family's gonna get bigger"

"Indeed," I explained, "we're going to have another baby."

When Sofia heard the news, she was extremely happy. The very next day, she had started looking on the Internet for cuddly toys. She had even moved some of the furniture in her room to make room for it.

She also insisted on coming with us to the first ultrasound. In the car, knowing the emotion that Sofia's first heartbeat had created in us, we were extremely impatient.

We arrived in front of the small clinic where the gynecologist we had asked to take care of this pregnancy was practicing, alongside Addison. We entered the examination room and began the ultrasound.

"So," the doctor said as he began to apply the product to Arizona's belly, "I guess I don't have to give my usual speech."

"No, you don't have to!" Arizona replied with a smile

"That's fine with me." The doctor continued, starting to look at his screen. "Well, we have a fetus with the placenta."

"Is everything all right?" I asked, worried.

"Everything is fine," the doctor said while smiling at us, "your child is fine, he is healthy, his dimensions are perfect."

"Are you sure everything is fine?" Sofia insisted. "I don't want my little brother or sister to have any problems, so are you really sure the baby is okay?"

"You know darling," I said to my daughter, looking her in the eyes to reassure her, "the three of us are doctors. We're also scared that it won't go well but right now, science tells us that everything is fine. In situations like that, when we are afraid or anxious, focusing on reality is helpful. Right now, the reality is that our baby is fine."

"If you want," the doctor suggested, "I can make you listen to the heartbeat."

He pressed the sound button and by that time nothing else mattered but that steady beat. It was so loud, so regular. Our child had not yet been born, but he was already with us, he was already completely part of our family. He surrounded us and embraced us. We knew that every beat was going to bring us closer to the day we would finally meet that baby.

"The baby is really making noise." Sofia noted with a smile. "Do babies always make so much noise?"

"No, they don't all make so much noise." I replied, simply happy. "This baby is really loud; he is really strong."

"What if it's a superhero?" Sofia wondered. "What if we call him "Super-NotYetHuman"? That is a nice name, isn't it?"

"It's a great name, sweetie." I nodded

"Do you want to know the gender of your baby?" The doctor asked.

"Of course," Sofia immediately answered, "I want to know."

"You're going to have... a little boy!"
