Azulaang Drabbles

Chapter 21: No Hard Feelings

Appa, the Sky-Bison was really great at two things in life. The first and most well-known was his ability to fly. He could go for long periods without stopping, and could transport multiple people easily. In the years after the war, Aang was constantly aboard him headed towards the latest problem.

The second and much less known talent he possessed was his ability to listen. His hearing wasn't enhanced or anything, far from it, people just tended to talk to him. A few of his favorite moments were like when he listened to Toph admit she had a crush on Zuko, when Sokka debated on what to get Katara for her birthday, and when Zuko regaled him over good days that had long passed. The one he listened to the most though, was his oldest companion, Aang.

Who, by the speed at which he was babbling now as well as how quickly they left the Waterbender's house, had some serious things to get off his chest.

"Ugh. I don't even know what I'm supposed to feel bad about! She acts like it's my fault that Azula kissed me! I don't know why she got so upset. I mean, it's not like I like Azula like that!" Aang laughed uncomfortably to himself.

Oh, so that's what had happened. Aang had been unusually quiet after they left the Fire Nation Palace, but Appa had just embraced the silence as they flew. He groaned at Aang.

The Airbender shook his head in the negative. "What? No, there's no way I like Azula! I mean, she is kinda cute, but totally scary too! And I mean, her eyes are captivating, but how many girls have eyes like that? And she can shoot lightning, which is kind of awesome if you don't count that she almost killed me. So no, I can't like her like that! You're saying crazy things, buddy..." He trailed off and gradually became quiet as he stared at the endless expanse of clouds.

Silence reigned for a brief moment before he started up again. "...So what if I do like her? It's not like Katara is my girlfriend or anything. She's made that really clear." From his tone, Appa could tell his friend was bitter about that. The bison snorted, as if allowing him to continue. Emboldened, Aang went on. "That's right! She's not my girlfriend! If she doesn't want me, then why can't I be with someone who does?"

The flying beast roared his approval, and Though he couldn't see the Airbender, he could feel a big grin on the monk's face. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

At this question, the Sky-Bison moaned in agreement, before changing course for the Fire Nation Palace and speeding up. This didn't go unnoticed by the Avatar, who leaned down and hugged the huge creature.

"Thanks, Appa. You're the best!"
