Chapter 25: The Greatest Challenger 2 – Ballet of Lights
"Psyshock!"
"Flamethrower!"
Fire and psychic energy clash fiercely as both Pokemon look to overcome the other. The ground was tore apart in the point of clash, leaving debris and boulder around.
Charizard roars as he expels fire over and over, stepping closer and closer as he did.
Cresselia meanwhile opted to keep a steady output, in order to turn this into a battle of attrition.
Tobias immediately knew that this Charizard was dangerous, it had experience that was easily seen on the Pokémon's eyes.
So this approach should let Charizard waste away all his energy before doing substantial damage to Cresselia 'Got that?'
'I understand, Tobias'
"Get closer and use Slash!"
Tobias smirks at that command "Break through with Dazzling Gleam!"
As Charizard breaks off the stalemate, Cresselia is covered in shining energy and charges forward. Not expecting that, Charizard flaps his wings in an effort to get away.
"Dodge and counter with Dragon Tail!"
Charizard smirks as evades the charging Cresselia and retaliates with his tail, slapping the Pokemon away.
"That Charizard must be a veteran to deliver a Dragon Tail like that!"
"Not enough" Tobias mutters as he thinks on what to do "Calm Mind!"
"Now Charizard!" Ash pumps his fist towards Cresselia "It's our chance! Use Flamethrower!"
"Take it!"
Ash's flinches at Tobias' command "What!?"
Cresselia is bathed in flames at her trainer's call. Charizard stares in surprise knowing that the Pokemon would have no problem dodging it.
"Psyshock!"
From the sea of flames comes a pink beam that hits Charizard with enough force to send the Pokemon against the wall of the battlefield… "Char!"
"Charizard!" Ash turns around to look at the crumbled form of Charizard "Are you okay!?"
"Char!" Charizard gets up from the rubble and flies in front of Ash.
'It's a bad matchup!' Ash thinks over what happened 'Charizard has Flamethrower, Slash, Seismic Toss and Dragon Tail! Dragon Tail won't work with Dazzling Gleam, Cresselia is a Psychic Type, so Seismic Toss is a bad choice! Also Cresselia has a powerful Psyshock that grows with Calm Mind!"
It was a difficult call, but Ash had to do it…
"Charizard come back!"
A red light returns Charizard to his Pokeball.
"And Trainer Ash makes the call to switch Charizard!" The announcer looks at the field, curious about the Pokemon that comes next "I have to say! Tobias looked like an unbeatable trainer from the beginning! Can Ash Ketchum actually defeat such an opponent!?"
In the stands…
"It was a tough call" Barry crosses his arms, eyeing Cresselia as it floated in front of her trainer "I don't know what Pokemon Ash has, but…"
"I know, it's a difficult decision" Brock shakes his head "Charizard is one of Ash's strongest Pokemon… If not the strongest, arguably"
In the battlefield…
Ash watches Cresselia as she seemingly analysed him… 'I've got the Pokemon that can beat Cresselia, but I wanted to save him for later…' He pulls out the Pokeball and throws it.
From it comes out a blue frog-like Pokemon that had its tongue tied around its neck "Ninja…"
In the Champion's booth…
"A Greninja! A rare find around here!" Charles Goodshow smiles at Ash's choice "A perfect choice against Cresselia"
"Indeed"
In the battlefield…
'What Pokemon is that one?' The mysterious trainer looks at Greninja warily "It doesn't matter, we'll defeat it"
"Let's see you defeating my Greninja" Ash smiles confidently.
-Flashback-
"Greninja is a must…" Kalos-Ash looks over the options "Arguably one of my strongest ones…"
"Due to your special condition I recommend using the Greninja from your time" Darkrai suggests thoughtfully "A difference in your synchronic rate can lead to a wavering transformation…"
"Transformation?" OS-Ash looks quizzically at Darkrai…
-Flashback End-
"Come on Greninja, use Double Team and run towards Cresselia!"
Greninja's body shifts as copies appears around him "Gre…!"
"Destroy those copies with Psychock and find the original one!"
The copies run towards Cresselia as she shoots the psychic beam from one side of the field to the other, dispelling the doppelgangers.
Tobias smirks at this, but it falters as Ash gives another command…
"Aerial Ace!"
From the smoke created by the doppelgangers, comes out the original Greninja, fists glowing white "Ninja! Gre-ninja!"
Greninja zooms in front of Cresselia and delivers a series of punches at the Pokemon pushing it back. Left, right, kick and a haymaker.
The crowd roars in excitement at Greninja's power.
"And Cresselia is hit! What a fast and powerful Pokemon!"
Tobias meanwhile looked back on what happened… 'Somehow that Greninja was able to withstand Cresselia's Psyshock…'
In the stands…
"Woo! That's a cool Pokemon!" Barry cheers wildly at Greninja's success…
"While Charizard is powerful, Greninja is very fast!" Dawn looks at the field with Piplup cheering along Barry "It's a very balancedteam!"
Brock meanwhile was unmoved by this, arms crossed and eyes narrowed… 'I feel that I lived through something like this in the past… Deja-vu?'
In the battlefield…
"I've got it" Tobias swipes his arm to the side "Cresselia counter with Dazzling Gleam!"
Cresselia is encased in light as she charges at Greninja.
"Don't let that hit you!" Ash warns Greninja "Parry Cresselia with Cut!"
Greninja gets in ready stance and he summons a white blade he uses to stop Cresselia on her tracks. In truth, Greninja was barely holding Cresselia back, slowly being pushed back "Nin… Greninja!"
With a mighty push, he manages to redirect Cresselia's assault towards the left.
"Now get Cresselia with Aerial Ace!"
Greninja presses his advantage and strike Cresselia several times with the Flying-type move "Ninja!"
"Retaliate with Dazzling Gleam!"
Cresselia is covered in the fairy type energy as Greninja approaches her, causing the latter to be repelled.
Greninja flinches at feeling the fairy energy and backs away "Nin…"
Tobias frowns at this turn of events 'Greninja is clearly a Dark type…' he turns to look at Cresselia, who looked weary after the last assault… 'Cresselia… you look pained…'
'Don't worry, Tobias…' It was Cresselia's voice 'If it comes to that… don't doubt to use it'
'I will…' He turns back to the battle at hand 'Calm Mind won't work here… Psyshock is useless… At this rate…'
Meanwhile with Ash, he encouraged Greninja to keep going "We're doing well, Greninja!"
"Gre!"
"Don't let our guard fall though… I feel he has an ace in the hole"
Tobias brushes his hair aside and calls out "Better make this worth it… Use Psyshock!"
Ash looks in surprise at that, as did Greninja and the crowd "But Greninja is a Dark type…"
A smirk blooms on the mysterious trainer "To the ground!"
Cresselia sends the beam right in front of Greninja, creating a cloud of dust that covered the field. That had the consequence of leaving Ash blind to what happened…
"Greninja stay on guard!"
"It won't work!" Tobias' voice is heard through the dust cloud "Cresselia, you know where Greninja is! Use Dazzling Gleam!"
Greninja could not see where Cresselia was coming, but he certainly felt when the Pokemon slammed into him with terrible force "Gre!"
Cresselia did it once, then twice and thrice, with Greninja being hit or barely evading…
Ash felt cornered in this situation. Tobias clearly took advantage of this tactic and left him with little choices… 'I want to save that for later… but there is something I can do!' Ash closes his eyes and concentrates on Greninja… 'You there… Greninja?'
It took a bit before Greninja replied 'Gre?'
'Good you're there bud… I'm going to connect with you… between the two of us, we'll predict where Cresselia is coming!'
Greninja nods in agreement and both enter a trance where everything turns black around them. The ground turns to water. Both Trainer and Pokemon stand back to back…
A drop of water is heard across this meta-dimension…
"Can you hear it?"
"Gre"
Both open their eyes at the same time, back in the real world "To your left! Jump and come down with an Aerial Ace!"
Greninja complies and falls down on a surprised Cresselia with a mighty cry "Gre… Ninja!"
Cresselia's eyes widen at Greninja's ability to dodge her with so little time…
The dust settles and it shows Cresselia on the ground, clearly injured, and Greninja standing a few meters away…
"What a turnaround!" The announcer shouts in shock "I was sure Cresselia had Greninja on the ropes!"
"Now Greninja finish this with Water Shuriken!"
Before Greninja could follow that command, a red light envelopes Cresselia…
"And Cresselia is recalled!"
Tobias silently looks at Cresselia's ball and shakes his head before pulling out another one. From it comes Porygon-Z once again, looking decidedly beaten after his previous bout with Charizard…
"Use Zap Cannon now!"
Greninja snaps to action, dodging the powerful electric type move "Ninja!"
"I know!" Ash looks at Porygon-Z and comes with a strategy "Use Double Team now!"
The battlefield is covered in Greninja charging at Z "Greninja!"
"All of you use Water Shuriken!"
And soon it rained Greninja on Porygon-Z, all of them wielding shuriken made of water that they throw with practised expertise.
Seeing this, Tobias sees only one way "Conversion2 now!"
As the water shuriken rain on Z, the Pokemon is covered in a transparent cube that changed colours until it landed on blue…
Greninja dispels its clones as it lands in front of Ash, expectant about what happened.
"Lock-on"
Greninja steps back as he sees Porygon-Z getting up from the all-out assault. Its eyes shining as it stared at him, analysing him… searching for something…
"It's the end for that Greninja" Tobias smirks seeing this "Lock-on has taken effect, there's no escape and this time, I will not let Z get hit"
In the void…
"This looks bad…" Alola-Ash crosses his arms "I don't know what he expects to do against this…"
Darkrai meanwhile look in deep thought… 'We're all going to die…'
In the battlefield…
"Zap Cannon"
Z shoots the ball of electricity at Greninja, who looked ready to move…
Like a daredevil, Ash grins wildly "Run, Greninja! We'll see who gets who!"
Greninja runs towards the Zap Cannon and jumps around it, taking a dive as the ball makes a U-turn in his direction "Ninja… ninja…ninja…ninja!"
Tobias watches as Greninja runs around the battlefield evading the Zap Cannon… 'It will tire out… But to accelerate the process…' Tobias looks at Z "Use Tri Attack on Greninja!"
Porygon-Z does as its asked and fires the Tri Attack towards Greninja, who manages to dodge barely, through it made the former lose concentration.
That had the consequence of Greninja getting hit by the Zap-Cannon…
The explosion that followed rocked the stadium. Everyone had to hide their faces to avoid getting blind.
When the commotion died down, everyone saw as a figure sat unconscious on the battlefield, its face down…
The referee walks towards Greninja's prone body and raises Tobias' flag "Greninja is unable to-"
He's stopped as the Greninja on the ground vanishes in a pop of smoke…
"What!?" Tobias' confident smile fell at that…
Everyone looked around the battlefield wildly "It can't be! The Greninja that's been fighting was a clone all along!?"
Ash's smirk widens at that comment "Let's show not to underestimate us, Greninja! Use Cut to finish this!"
From the rubble on the center of the battlefield comes out Greninja, completely unscathed and white blade ready in hand "Ninja!"
"Get away Z!"
It was too late as Greninja was right in front of Porygon-Z "Gre…" Greninja poses to strike, but right then the white blade turns dark and is lengthened… "Ninja!" Porygon is hit by the dark blade and stands in place as Greninja zooms behind him, sheathing the newly created blade… "Gre… ninja…"
Just as the blade disappears, a slash appears in Porygon-Z's body as it crumbles to the ground…
The referee this time makes his way to Porygon-Z and checks it thoroughly. It was embarrassing when he almost called a match that was far from over. This time he checked everything before calling the match "Porygon-Z is unable to battle! Greninja wins! Please bring your next Pokemon!"
The crowd cheers at the turnaround.
"I swear! If I didn't see this with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it!" The announcer cries out at the same time as the crowds cheer loudly "And Tobias is two Pokemon down! He has a Cresselia! What other Pokemon can this trainer have!?"
In the Champion's booth…
"An excellent battle" Cynthia smiles at Ash's accomplishment "That Porygon-Z was really well trained and Ash trust in his Pokemon led him to victory"
"Not only trust" Charles Goodshow comments "I think this is as much Ash's tactic as is Greninja's!"
"Indeed…"
In the battlefield…
'It used the rubble that came from Cresselia's battle with Charizard to hide and attack when our guard went down… Ingenious' Silently, Tobias returns Porygon-Z and brings out his next Pokemon…
"What have you brought me out for, Master Tobias?"
Ash blinks at seeing a talking Slowking of all Pokemon… 'He's a mystery guy… and he brings out a Slowking?'
"I need you to battle" Tobias simply replies "This is getting to be a tough battle"
"A new one, that's for sure" The Slowking chuckles mirthlessly "Let's see what this chap has for us"
Ash frowns at Tobias' choice… "Greninja come back" He points Greninja's Pokeball and returns the Pokemon "You did well, I'll need your help later"
He brings out another Pokeball and releases his next Pokemon "Come one out bud!"
"Squirtle!" The Pokemon lands and strikes a pose "Squirt-tle!"
In the stands…
"It's so cute!" Dawn gushes over Squirtle "It has a jacket and a pair of glasses! That Pokemon is totally a contest Pokemon!"
"But a Squirtle is an unevolved Pokemon…" Barry looks at the Pokemon critically "Can it beat a fully evolved Pokemon like Slowking?"
"No need to worry!" Dawn smiles down to the field "I've seen Ash beat impossible odds in the past! I know he can do it!"
"Also Squirtle, even if you can't see it, it's one of Ash's oldest Pokemon" Brock comments with a smile "It'll be an interesting battle altogether"
In the battlefield…
"Start things with Hydro Pump!"
"Rapid Spin to dodge it!"
Squirtle tucks his head, arms and legs inside his shell and starts spinning out of the way of the Hydro Pump. Squirtle spins until he manages to strike Slowking in the chin, staggering it.
"My, my… a troublesome fella" Slowking groused as he nurses his chin "It'll need a more personal touch, Tobias…"
"I agree" Tobias smirks at what's to come "Use Trick Room"
Slowking nods and releases psychic energy that coalesces around the field in a transparent cube…
Ash curses seeing this damn technique "I hate that move…"

So hello again!
BEFORE WE START WITH THE USUAL, I HAVE TO TELL YOU TO PLEASE CHECK OUT MY NEW ONESHOT! IT'S A POKEMON STORY THAT FEATURES ASH, MEW, GIOVANNI AND MEWTWO. IT'S AN ONESHOT SO IT WON'T TAKE TOO MUCH OF YOUR TIME! ALSO IT WORKS WHILE YOU WAIT FOR NEXT CHAPTER! END OF STATEMENT!
You know something curious? You pump out as many chapters as you can, then you simply wither away into a pit of depression and darkness called writer's block. Well for a bit. I mean the last chapter I did was one April 14th. Kinda sad that it took me 15 days to finish this chapter, even if it's not that long. I wrote the battle with Charizard all the way to it defeating Cresselia, but something didn't work with me, so I went back to the beginning and started over. I like this one better, what do you think?
SO let's begin with what we saw today. Charizard fights against Cresselia and comes to the point that, with Calm Mind, the latter would surpass the former vastly. Tactically, a change is completely valid I think, so if you have an issue with Charizard's role here, because I know someone will jump the gun, then tell me and we'll discuss it.
Next comes Greninja Vs Cresselia. It was a given that Greninja would win, and not because of the hype that Greninja is, but due to facts. This Cresselia has two offensive moves, Psychock (useless due to Greninja's dark type) and Dazzling Gleam (Super effective move, but the only way to attack) so you'll see why Tobias felt cornered…
Greninja Vs Porygon-Z is pretty straight forward. Z used Conversion2 to turn into a water type to resist the onslaught of Water Shuriken. Greninja hid in that moment in the rubble that the clash between Charizard and Cresselia created.
After that, the part I'm going to get more trouble for… Squirtle. Squirtle is an interesting Pokemon all around. I like the Pokemon and I wanted it to battle. Don't like it? Make your own story, sorry not sorry. Squirtle goes against a talking Slowking… and no, it's not the one in Shamouti. Just a very intelligent one, that's all. Still a horrible opponent for Ash, I mean… Trick Room, really!?
Anyway, Slowking came into this story at the suggestion of user Dimension Distorter, so thanks bud for the suggestion! An underused Pokemon in the anime for sure!
So that leaves Tobias with an interesting team if you look. So far he had a Darkrai, Porygon-Z, Cresselia, Slowking and Latios (From the canon we know that). A powerful team, that's for sure! But… what about the last member of Tobias' team? Find out soon, it's a Pokemon I choose because… that would be spoiler. Sorry boys and girls.

Not to mention that I like how the battle with Charizard especially using Z as a shield for it own attack. But man... I can't wait to see what Ash going to do about Cresselia as she is the THIRD legend on Tobias's team!

And it would be cool if Ash could use Battle Bond with Infernape if you do plan do include him. And maybe have a way for Ash to Mega-Evolve his Pokémon with Aura or some shit like that. Ash needs every advantage he can get.

ArtemisaDayz: I have this so far loved this. Unova-Ash's snapping reminding me a fanfic short I tried to write about how the events of Kalos finally pushed Ash over the edge. When he got home, Delia took charge and sent Ash to therapy, that Ash needed a professional's help after all he's been through since his first day. Thanks to this, in almost every story I write with Post-Kalos Ash, he's usually hyped on meds. A headcanon of mine since Sun and moon anime came out is that Ash is on meds, including antidepressants while he's in Alola. Now the idea of Alola-Ash casual mentioning this to a room full of his younger selves and them silently freaking out about it wont leave my head. Haha! (Mental health is a serious thing kids! It's nothing to laugh about. "Steven Universe needed a therapist since 2013" well Ash needed one since 1997!). There was more I wanted to say but I forgot. :/
ME: A story where Ash goes to sort his problems sounds really interesting! You better return to give it another try! Ash on meds… well he's on vacation at the start, so what the hell dunno. There is a story called 'Locked Away' that basically tells the story of an Ash that wakes up as a twenty years old man after being in a coma where he dreamed of going through the adventures on the anime series. It's an amazing story that threads the delicate subject of the mind along a compelling story. Recommended!

XD: As always great chapter, the rematch Heracross vs Darkrai is something that I'm almost certain to happen, because Heracross, just below Sceptile, had an impressive performance in the canon. Interesting chosen of Porygon-Z as Tobias's pokemon, although you're right it was the only Sinnoh's pokemon that Ash never met, Porygon as well as its evolutions are banned from appearing in anime for something that WASN'T its fault but Team Rocket's (and in part of Pikachu's). As for Cresselia, its choice doesn't surprise me, other authors also make it Tobias's pokemon.

You know, I never watched the Porygon episode, so I don't know what really happened, just read about it, but yeah, it's stupid to do that. Cresselia is a sure choice, what with being the counterpart of Darkrai.

Flyg0n Things are heating up! I'm really excited by this, and I hope maybe Sceptile and Greninja make a comeback. Given that I recently rewatched the garbage of Sinnoh league and am also rewatching the dumpster fire of Unova and blessed goodness of XY, this retribution is well in order. Ash ought to ask Solgaleo to fight by his side. Or Naganadel or Melmetal. Legendary for a legendary, if you ask me. Definitely looking forward to whats coming. On a side note, I can't fathom how a trainer can be allowed to compete with a legendary? A Darkrai AND Latios? That's just stupid. Anyways... good work.
ME: Actually, DP was quite solid. It showed Ash at his best and worse (At that time, then came XY and plowed through that, but at the time it was a great deal). The gym battles were some of the bests and the league was the only one where he brought the gang, even if he did have questionable choices. Unova… it pains me to say, but it had its moments even if I don't like the series overall. Ash Vs Iris was a god forsaken fan service, but Charizard is Charizard. A trainer participating with a legendary/mythical was weird at the time, but after SM where Ash and Gladion used one each… well it's debatable now. Ash using one makes that argument null, because pot calls the kettle or as we say here 'the dead is scared of the beheaded'.

Meh, Porygon is an ambiguous Pokemon in the franchise. Ash met it so long ago that it doesn't care or remember at all.

You know that we're at 199 reviews! The first one to review this chapter is going to be 200 hundredth reviewer! That only brings nothing more than bragging rights, and that's debatable because, who would brag about a fanfic?
Anyway, take in account that I posted more words in this last month and half than I did in the last two years, so take that in account that I'm kinda running out of juice. I'll try to keep up with this as much as I can, but I won't stop posting!
