Chat Noir slipped back into his window without being seen. Even on nonpatrol nights, he liked to go out and feel the wind in his hair. He detransformed and Plagg headed straight for the camembert. Adrien sighed. His house felt so stifling.
He went into the bathroom to brush his teeth for bed when his appearance shocked him. Hadn't he detransformed already? His mask was gone along with the suit but the tail was still attached to his body. He grabbed it, thinking Plagg was playing a joke on him.
"Ow!" it was attached?! The tail move on its own, swaying.
"Plagg?! What's going on?" Plagg drifted into the bathroom leisurely stuffing his face with cheese.
"Wow," Plagg blinked, getting a closer look. "I feel like this has happened before…" Adrien waited for him to fix it. "But I don't remember." Plagg shrugged and Adrien sighed. Very helpful.
He texted the only person he could talk to, Marinette. She'd figured out his identity a few months ago. It had grown awkward between them since she now knew he was in love with her. And he had to come to terms with the fact that the love of his life was so close by.
She didn't respond after 20 minutes and he groaned into his pillow. Of course, she wouldn't be awake this early in the morning. He tried to lay on his back but his tail was uncomfortable. He flipped to his stomach. At least it should be easy to hide. He'd talk to her tomorrow and settle things. Maybe he just needed sleep.
Marinette woke up that morning to a text from Adrien. Her heart raced with excitement but when she opened it, her heart dropped. 'We need to talk'. Was all it said. She was confused. She didn't respond seeing as she would see him in just a few minutes. She walked into her bathroom, her back was incredibly sore. I must've slept wrong.
For once she wasn't going to be late and had time to shower. She took off her shirt and let out a gasp.
"Marinette, are you okay?" Her mother yelled.
"Uhhhh, yeah! I just… fell in the toilet," she tried to laugh it off.
Wings were protruding from her back. Ladybug wings. She spun around, trying to look at them in the mirror. The polka-dotted hard covering was nowhere to be seen but the membranous underwings had sprouted from her shoulder blades. They were translucent but black in color. She skipped the shower and ran back to her room, finding the largest shirt she had.
"Tikki! What is this?!" Tikki zoomed to her aid, eyes widening.
"Oh no…" Tikki tapped the wings. Marinette shivered and they extended.
"What, is it serious?" She tried to pull them back but she wasn't used to the new muscles.
"It's happened a few times but we'd have to find a guardian to fix it, they keep all the information." Tikki looked at the clock worriedly.
"It's so cold…" Marinette shivered. It was winter but she never got this cold before, especially in her heated house. She struggled to pull on her shirt, hoping it was baggy enough to keep the wings hidden.
She threw on another jacket and would talk to Adrien when she got to school.
"I'll go find a guardian to fix this, there aren't many, but… nevermind," Tikki rushed out the window and Marinette made her way to school. Her wings were chaffing on her back uncomfortably as she walked to the school.
When she arrived Nino and Adrien were walking inside together. He was wearing a winter hat which wasn't unusual for the temperature. She ran up to them. "I'm gonna have to steal him really quickly," Marinette gave a tight smile as she grabbed Adrien's hand and pulled him away.
"Marinette, you didn't answer m-" She pulled him into an empty classroom and locked the door.
"I have wings," she rushed out breathing heavily. She tore off her jacket and extended her wings, he could tell even from underneath her shirt they were there.
"That's why I tested you," she tilted her head. He took off his hat and ears twitched atop his head. They were fluffy and black. He also untucked something from his pants. A tail waved behind him. Her eyes widened as they stared at each other in shock.
"The tail showed up last night but when I woke up this morning the ears appeared," the bell rang and he pulled his hat back on, tucking the tail away.
"Tikki went out to find a guardian, hopefully, she'll be back soon with answers," Marinette said as she pulled the large jacket back on. They walked to class and sat down.
Marinette couldn't shake the cold. She shivered in class, struggling to stay awake as the teacher talked.
"Adrien, you know hats are prohibited," the teacher announced. They both swallowed as he began to pull the hat away.
"Marinette, " a small voice whispered to her. Tikki had phased through the floor and into her lap. She had found something. Marinette put her pride aside and made a distraction.
She threw herself from her seat. "Ow!" Everyone turned their attention to her. "I think I need the nurse," she threw a look in Adrien's direction and he nodded.
"I'll take her," he got up quickly and they ran out of the room together. They went outside where they wouldn't be bothered.
"Tikki what did you find?" They both gazed into her purse.
"I found someone. Theyre not exactly… what I had in mind, but we don't have a choice." Neither of them knew what she meant but they didn't have any other option. She led the way, they followed after her as quickly as possible without being seen.
She led them to a house and they looked at each other. It wasn't exactly what they had expected. It looked normal. Marinette knocked on the door. A man opened the door and blinked at them.
"Um… can I help you?"
"We uh… heard you were a guardian," He looked at them confused and tried to shut the door. Adrien put his foot in the door.
"You must have something here, a scroll or ancient texts," Adrien's words made the man's eyebrows raise.
He thought for a moment before answering, "...come in." if anything happened he could take on two kids. He led them through a hallway and into a room stacked with books inside boxes and outside.
"You mean these old things? I've never even opened them." Books piled to the ceiling and the kids sighed. They'd have to look through all of them to find an answer.
"Yes, sir. Why do you have all these?" Marinette asked, picking up a book.
"They've been passed down in my family. I wanted to get rid of them but it was my father's dying wish that I pass them down or something. They just sit here. He was always going on about being a guardian for something or other." He shrugged, seemingly uninterested in his history.
"Do you mind if we look through them?" Adrien asked.
"Why not? Take your time," he left them in the room.
They got started looking through anything and everything they could find. Soon it became apparent this would not end quickly. Marinette was struggling to keep her eyes open, curling into a ball to conserve heat.
"It's so cold in here…" She muttered out. Adrien looked at her funny, he wasn't cold in the slightest. Wait if he was getting cat attributes and she was a ladybug.
Adrien got her a blanket and wrapped her up. His fingernails had sharpened into claws and he swallowed. What exactly would happen if they didn't find a cure? He clenched his fist. He didn't want to find out.
Marinette lethargically tried to read books while Adrien ruffled through them quickly, Tikki and Plagg also helping.
"If the powers are used too often… it could have physical effects on the holder!" Adrien finished, looking to Marinette. She was fast asleep. He tried to shake her awake but she was out cold, possibly hibernating.
She was cute when she was asleep. Adrien shook the thought from his head, getting back to work.
Adrien read through the rest of it. He took the book, he knew what he had to do. There had been too many akumas recently. And he had to admit he was using his powers more than Marinette was. That's probably why it affected him first.
"Sir, can you please get me as many blankets as you have and any heating pads you might have?" The man looked at him funny but did as he said. He piled them on Marinette to keep her warm and hopefully wake her up, he would need her conscious to fix this.
"Tikki Plagg once she wakes up, we're doing this," he opened the book to the correct page as they read what it said. It was risky but they didn't have any other options.
"Adrien…?" Marinette opened her eyes after some time. She felt like the princess and the pea but instead of mattresses, it was blankets. They were stacked high on top of her.
He peaked around the blankets and smiled. She gaped at him. "Y-you have fangs… and claws!" she wondered how different she looked by now.
"I know but we have to try something," Tikki and Plagg came up next to her as they explained what needed to be done.
"But… isn't that contradictory? I mean if using our powers too much is what caused this shouldn't we not use them?" She asked.
"Its what the book said and it's worth a shot," She sighed but nodded. Marinette took off her earrings and handed them to Adrien while he gave her his ring. In unison, they transformed.
Misterbug looked back at Ladynoir. Suddenly she was incredibly stuffy under all the blankets. She struggled to get out from underneath them.
"I don't see what this will help," she sighed.
"I think if we use more of the other power as it says in the book it should have a reversal effect," Adrien stated.
"Lucky Charm!"
"Cataclysm!" They used their powers together, holding their hands just inches apart, canceling each other out. Their kwamis shot out of the miraculous and they got pushed into opposite sides of the room. Marinette had the pile of blankets to brace her fall, Adrien was not so lucky. They blinked their eyes open and looked at each other.
Adrien's ears and tail were gone, while Marinette ran rushed hands over her back to find the wings were gone. They stood up and embraced. They hugged tightly, Adrien spun her around as they laughed. They pulled back, both blushing profusely avoiding eye contact as Tikki came out from under a pile of books.
"All you needed was a little balance," Tikki cheered, smiling at them.
"I'm hungry," Plagg grumbled.
The man came rushing into the room, finding it a mess. "What happened?!" He stared at them in disbelief.
"Uh… sorry?"
