Chapter 19
~.~
This takes place when Ruby (Eret and Becky's daughter) is six months old.
(Eret's POV)
I wake up to the sound of my wife sobbing.
"Honey, are you alright?"
"Hurts."
"What hurts, love?"
"Right side."
"Gods. I'll call 911. I'm here, love, and I'll do everything I can to help you."
Penny jumps up on the bed, pawing Becky's left arm. But Becky is in too much pain to respond.
(Normal POV)
Soon, paramedics arrive, and they speed off to the emergency room, Eret, with his daughter in his arms, and Penny at his side, riding along with them. He calls the Thorstons on the way, being careful with his wording.
They soon arrive at the hospital, and Becky is wheeled off to the operating room, leaving a very worried Eret behind.
One of the nurses in the OR is familiar to Becky.
"M-Monica?"
"I'm here. I'll be right here when Eret can't be. I won't leave you. You just squeeze my hand and go to sleep. He'll be there when you wake up. I promise."
"Alright, Rebekah, you count backwards from ten, okay?"
"What about anesthesia awareness?"
"We'll make sure that doesn't occur to you. Now, count backwards from ten, and when you wake up again, it'll be all over. I promise. Okay?" Becky nods and the anesthesiologist places the mask over her mouth and nose.
"Ten…nine…eight…"
That was as far as she got.
Meanwhile, Eret is pacing with his daughter in his arms. Penny follows him.
"Penny, please lay down."
Penny does as she's told.
"Eret!" He turns and sees his in-laws rushing towards him.
"How is she?"
"I don't know. They just got her in there a few minutes ago. I've been pacing ever since." Ruby stirs, sensing her father's nerves.
"Shhh. It's okay, Ruby. I'm here, my little love."
Soon, Eret's parents and sister arrive.
"Here, Eret, I'll take her." Ruby, Eret's mum, says.
Soon after, a doctor comes out of the OR.
Eret immediately goes up to him.
"I'm Rebekah's husband. How is she?"
"She pulled through just fine. She's going to be alright."
"Oh, thank goodness. When can we see her?"
"Soon. I'll have a nurse come get you when you can see her."
"Thank you so much."
"You're welcome."
~.~
(Eret's POV)
Soon, a nurse comes by and lets me see my wife with Penny. Ruby, my daughter, is with my mum.
"Call me if she needs anything. Or if you need anything."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." The nurse leaves and I sit at my wife's bedside, holding her hand.
Before long, she starts to wake up. Penny wags her tail.
"Eret?"
"Hey, love. How are you feeling?"
"Hurts."
"Shhh. The pain will pass. You pulled through beautifully, my love."
"I did?"
"You wouldn't be here talking to me if you didn't."
"So I'm okay?"
"Yes. You are most certainly okay."
"Monica was there."
"Was she?"
"Yeah. She said she'd be there when you couldn't be. I'm glad she was. When you can't comfort me, she does. God does."
"That's right, love. God comforts you through your guardian angel. And I'd like to think He helps me comfort you, too."
"He does?"
"He sure does. Sometimes, when I can't find the words to comfort you, I pray. I prayed while I was pacing tonight."
"Thank you. It's over."
"Thank the Lord for that. You survived, and you never have to go through that again. I promise."
I kiss my wife's forehead and she falls back asleep, glad it's over.
And so am I.
