Kramer's Party

JOSH POV

I let out a sigh as I parked my car and got out, along with Jess, just outside the large mansion, from which loud music could be heard. A party was already clearly in full swing.

"Maybe you'd better stay in the car." I suggested to her, concerned.

Jess shook her head. "We're partners, remember? Wherever you go, I go."

I presented an invitation to one of the bodyguards at the mansion's gate, allowing Jess and I to enter.

"So, what are we doing here?" Jess asked as we walked up the rain-soaked path.

I explained, "We've come to see Gordi Kramer."

"Kramer?" she gasped. "The bigwig tycoon from Kramer Construction?"

"His son." I clarified.

It was true, she was referring to Charles Kramer, some major rich man with apparent mob connections who was head of a construction company, but the man we wanted to see was his hard partying son.

"You think maybe he's the Origami Killer?" Jess asked.

I shrugged. "For now, I just have a few questions that need answers."

I decided that it was best not to tell her that he had been a suspect, due to an interesting and unfortunate incident, which was partly the reason I was here. I shook my head as we walked up the path, glancing at Jess.

'It was stupid to bring Jess here. I don't do well with partners. All that, just to get my hands on that stupid envelope...'

Shaking my head again, this time to clear my mind, I entered the mansion with Jess right alongside me.

Inside, the music was even louder, the place was packed with people, and Jess looked around in amazement.

"What a joint! Kramer must be loaded!" she shouted over the music. "Whatcha think he paid for all this shiny crap?"

"We'll discuss Kramer's decor another time." I replied, amused. It was clear that she could get used to living a life of luxury like this.

Jess shuddered. "Are we gonna be here long? This place gives me the creeps."

'Which is partly why I was worried about bringing you.' I thought, before replying. "I'm gonna go find Gordi Kramer. You stay here till I come back, okay?"

Jess nodded. "Okay. Just let me know if you need me."

With that, she found a space not occupied and sat down while I looked around, trying to find Gordi, but it wasn't easy, and if the large number of guards were anything to go buy, it certainly wasn't likely he was in this room.

Continuing to look around, and finding the party-goers less than helpful, I soon found myself facing two bodyguards. They were a little more important than the rest and blocking the only path to a staircase. I was beginning to put two and two together. Gordi had to be up there.

"Hi, I'd like to see Gordi." I said to them.

They both glared and one spoke sharply. "Gordi isn't seeing anyone. Beat it."

"Look, Cinderfella, the clock's just turned twelve and I don't wanna turn you into a pumpkin." I snapped back. I was really in no mood for this, after everything that I had endured already.

"You're real smart, fella." he scoffed. "Bet you won't be so funny with my foot up your ass."

I turned away, annoyed, my mind racing.

'If I want to see Gordi Kramer, I'm gonna have to go about it some other way.' I reflected. 'Hmmm...maybe I'll see if Jess has any ideas.'

With that, I made my way back over to her. Seeing me approach, Jess spoke up.

"So, did you find Gordi?"

I nodded. "He's upstairs, but he's got two goons blocking the way."

Jess looked over and then back at me. "Do you want me to handle them?"

I had to admit, I was intrigued and amused.

"Hey, what are you gonna do?" I joked. "Knock them out with a pair of high heels?"

Jess rolled her eyes, but replied seriously. "Leave it to me. Just be ready to go as soon as they leave the stairs."

"Wait, Jess!"

But she didn't respond. I watched anxiously as she approached the two goons and began dancing seductively. It was clear that they were having a hard time resisting her. Then suddenly, she collapsed. The goons panicked and left their posts, checking on her, frantic, and I took my chance, sneaking past them and heading up the stairs. As I did so, I couldn't help but be impressed.

'Wow, that was a lot more than I expected.' I admitted to myself. 'Nice work, Jess.'

Following the path and, noting a new noise, the noise of a TV, I followed it and entered what turned out to be Gordi Kramer's room.

Gordi Kramer was a young man, late twenties to early thirties, with slicked back black hair, black eyes, clean shaven and pale, dressed smartly, but in rumpled clothing. He was seated on a large sofa, watching some ridiculous cartoon on a massive TV, totally ignoring the two girls on the sofa beside him, making out.

"Mr. Kramer?"

He just laughed and raised his hand. "Shh! This is the best part."

"My name is Josh Shelby, I'm a private detective." I introduced myself. "I'm investigating the case of the Origami Killer. I'd like to ask you a few questions."

Gordi ignored me and continued laughing at the cartoon.

I pressed harder. "I'd like to know exactly what happened to little Joseph Brown."

That shook his cool. Gordi's face twisted with anger and he furiously dismissed the girls.

"Beat it, you hear me? Get the hell out of here!"

They did so, startled, and once they left, Gordi turned his attention to me.

"What do you want?" he asked in a calmer voice.

I confronted him with the facts. "A witness saw little Joseph Brown getting into the back of your limousine. That was the last time anybody ever saw him. Now I know you've been arrested and interrogated until your father made a little phone call and the file was closed. I'd like to hear your version of the facts."

"The kid was lost. I just offered to drive him home. The police arrived, I explained the misunderstanding, and I was released. End of story. Nothing to get excited about, right?" Gordi replied.

I quirked an eyebrow. Did he really expect me to believe that?

"I don't know why, but your story just doesn't check out." I told him, making my skepticism clear. "You're giving me the crap now. Tell me something I can believe."

With a dark smirk, Gordi stood up.

"Very well." he said, his voice taking on a creepy edge. "I'm the Origami Killer. I get my victims into my car and I drown them in rainwater. Then I dump them on a wasteland with an origami figure in one hand and an orchid on their chests. I do that because I'm bored, Mr. Shelby, and it's a creative and entertaining way of having fun. Is that good enough for you, or do you want more? This interview is over."

It was then that I noticed those two goons from before.

Gordi gestured to me. "Get rid of this clown!"

With that, they closed in and grabbed a hold of me. But I wasn't about to stand for that. I lashed out and struck the man on my right, right in the face. Using my free hand, I swung around and caught the other on his ear. With both having let go of me, I faced them, ignoring the sick amusement Gordi seemed to be finding in the fight.

They both tried to attack me, but I dodged and struck one of them while doing so, then catching the other and kneeing him in the stomach. The first came at me again and tackled me into the wall, winding me, but I quickly recovered and knocked him down and through a nearby table. I then delivered a hard punch to the second man, sending him flying over the sofa and into a heap on the floor.

"It's a dangerous game you're playing, Kramer." I huffed, gasping for breath.

"Do you know who my father is?" Gordi replied with a smirk. "He only has to lift one finger and you won't wake up tomorrow morning. You're the one who should be afraid, Mr. Shelby. Not me."

I rolled my eyes and left the room, hearing that sick moron returning to his dumb show. I got nothing out of this. I would have to think of a different approach, once I picked up Jess and we left.
