Chapter 28: Happy

Nessie's POV

I was so happy right now that I felt like I was going to explode. We were going to get married. I could not believe it. Jacob and I were going to get married. The words made me swell with happiness. Nothing could erase the grin on my face.

Jake nearly crushed me against his chest. "I love you Ness. I love you and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you,"

"I love you too Jake," truer words had never been spoken.

"You've just made me the happiest man on Earth," he said. "There is nobody I am ever going to love as much as I love you and our son,"

"What about if we had another baby?" I asked him.

"Do you want another baby?" he asked me. "I was kind of afraid that after giving birth the first time you would not want more,"

"I would love to have more. But maybe once we get out of all the messes we are currently in. If we survive the next month unscathed that is,"

"We will," I could hear the determination in his voice. "But let's not worry about that right now. Not tonight at least,"

He was right. I was happy right now and nothing was going to ruin that happiness for me. "You looked really nervous Jake,"

"I was," he admitted. "I was afraid that you were going to say no,"

"Oh Jacob,"

"I'm serious," he said. "What if you'd said no and ran off? Maybe it was irrational but there was apart of me that was afraid you'd reject me,"

"As if I could ever reject you," I said. "Does everyone know?"

"By everyone do you mean the entire family?"

"That is exactly what I mean,"

"Then yes. Everyone knows. That's why Edward and Bella chose to be our protection detail while we were here tonight. They wanted to hear your reaction to my proposal. They were confident you'd say yes,"

"You know you're really cute when you're nervous Jacob,"

"Well from the way I felt I must have looked adorable," he laughed.

"Quite," I admitted.

"You know what's funny? A few months ago I was just a normal human girl. In just a few months I discovered the existence of vampires, shapeshifters, and hybrids. My life has been completely turned upside down. But I wouldn't have it any other way,"

"I know the feeling," he said. "Before I first turned I was just a normal human with no knowledge of our world. I'd heard all the legends of our tribe from my father but I'd never actually believed him. I thought he was just a superstitious old man. We'd all been taught the stories of our ancestors but we didn't believe the elders. Needless to say it wasn't easy when we started transforming. At least you didn't have to morph into an oversized wolf to find out the truth. That was scary,"

"I'll bet. I just wishbI could remember, you know? I want to remember everything from the very beginning. It's kind of frustrating when you guys show me pictures and tell me stories from my childhood and I can't remember any of it,"

"I'm sure you will Nessie. Give it time. Or maybe you just need a really good whack to the head,"

"Should I go look for a baseball bat and let you take a swing at me?" I laughed.

He laughed with me. "Believe me if I could do that without risking serious brain damage to help you remember I would,"

I guess did it really matter if I remembered my past or not? I was happy right now. I was happy to have my family, my fiancee, and my baby. Did it matter if I never remembered the first nine months of my life?

"I think someone is getting sleepy," Jake said. I smiled when I saw my son let out a big yawn. His eyes were starting to look droopy.

"Well it is way past his bedtime,"

"Maybe we should go home. We can continue celebrating there,"

Jake called the waiter over and asked for the bill. As soon as he was in my arms Jr. fell asleep. I tried not to move him around to much as I buckled him into his carseat.

"Congratulations baby," I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard my mother's voice right behind me.

"Jesus Christ mom you almost gave me a heart attack," I hugged her excitedly.

"Sorry sweetie. I couldn't help myself,"

"Mom. Why did you give me your ring?" I held up the ring in question. As much as I loved it I couldn't understand why she would want to part with it.

"Because your father and I wanted you to have it. It was a family heirloom and since your father and I will hopefully never die you can't inherit things from us the way regular people do from their parents. So we decided that when you got married we'd pass it onto you. Then you could pass it onto one of your kids one day. We thought it would be a nice tradition to start,"

"But mom what are you going to wear? Isn't this a symbol of your love for my dad?"

"Sweetheart we don't need a ring to know we love each other. It's a symbol of love period. It was a symbol of love for your father's parents, then for Edward and I, and now for you and Jacob. That's why we wanted to pass it onto you,"

"Wow. Thanks mom," I hugged her as tight as I could.

Feelings of happiness and love filled me from head to toe. I felt like the luckiest girl alive. Maybe the luckiest half vampire in the world. I never wanted to stop feeling that way. My whole family congratulated me as soon as I walked in the door.

Jacob wasn't kidding. Everybody in the family already knew. Even my sister Lily already knew. Lily was doing much better. So was my niece. She wasn't well enough to be taken off the ventilator just yet but she was doing better. Lily had named her Ally. That baby girl was always more active when Jr. was around. Which was quite often. My son loved being close to her as much as possible. A side effect of the imprinting Jacob had told me.

I put my sleeping baby in his crib. He didn't even move at all. Not long afterwards I fell asleep next to the crib. I woke up a few hours later feeling weird. Very weird. I felt compelled to stand up. I didn't want to stand up but it was as if there was some external force making me do it.

That same force also compelled me to grab my son. Something was wrong. I tried to yell out for help but I couldn't. Instead I opened the window and climbed out of it slowly with Jacob Jr. in my arms. I kept walking toward the forest. I didn't want to and I tried to fight it but nothing worked.

"It's about time you arrived. You're very slow. But I guess that's because you're only half vampire," chills ran down my spine when I heard Amy's voice. Emily and Leila were at her side. "It's useless trying to fight Emily's control. Mind control is impossible to fight,"

In my head I screamed to my father for help.

Leila laughed. "Don't bother trying to call to your father for help. He won't hear you. I've stolen his gift from him. I've stolen the shield's gift also. Your family is basically defenseless now,"

"Emily make her hand that stupid baby to me," Amy said.

I wanted to clutch him tight to me but I didn't. Instead I was forced to hand him right over to my enemy. He woke up and started crying. Amy looked very annoyed. "Oh shut up you stupid useless baby. Babies aren't good for anything. Useless little creatures they are. I will never understand why people love them so much,"

Against my will I was forced to follow them. I could only hope that my family would find out we are gone and that they'd be able to track us quickly.
