Chapter twenty-one: Who Do We Trust?

(Lindsey pov.)

I could hear Hatter's voice. And Alice. Both yelling at each other.

Arguing about the ring and her finding her father.

Trusting Jack? No way. I don't trust him, but I do want to get Alice's father out of here, if he really is here.

"I DON'T KNOW!" Alice loud voice broke me.

"What?" I woke up in shock.

"Hang on there." Hatter helped me down off his back and made sure I could stand.

Alice didn't bother looking at me. I saw she was upset. Was it about Jack being...

"He's engaged." She said.

Hatter had this sad look on his face. But he seemed satisfied with it.

"To a Duchess." She finished.

"He's two timing you." He said.

"Chris, the Duchess is her sister. They are going to be brother and sister." I said. I never thought I'd see the day Chris would have her heart broken. Now I know..."All the times she's looked At Jack, making herself cry. It wasn't over the fact he was in love with...Alice. It was because, she knew the truth. That her own sister was marrying him and not her." I said.

"You could see that?" Alice asked me.

"Yea. I always could see when someone else liked the other. many guys, they talked to me to understand you. It's never about me you know." I said.

And that was the truth. I was reading most times to get away from my life. I wanted away from this place. Now that I am, it looks more of a nightmare then I wished it to be.

"Lindsey." Hatter's voice brought me back. "Anyway, can we trust this? The information? We walked through that game room, I would have seen him. We would have." I told her.

"He might be somewhere else then. Somewhere...in another room or under a stronger influence." Alice said.

"Alice." As much as I wanted to believe this, it didn't fit right. "I'm going with Hatter on this one. We can't trust him."

"You never did." Alice looked at me like she would kill me if she could. She was just hurting though.

"At least...you have one parent. I have none." I snapped and walked on ahead of them.

Charlie's voice echoed along the shore. He was alive. Alice and Hatter followed me till we reached him.

"Charlie!"

"Hey! Thank goodness! I was just about to go back in to get you." He said hugging Alice.

While I wanted to know about how he got to shore, "We need to get moving. It's good seeing you Charlie."

"My dear." He looked at me like I was blue thing. Maybe cause I was. Looking at my hands, my fingers were blue and purple. I was shivering.

"Lindsey." Alice hugged me but it didn't help since we both were wet.

"Come and sit by the fire. That'll warm you up." Charlie said.

I nodded and sat down.

"We can't stay here. We need to get off this shore." Hatter said.

"No." Alice on the other hand.

"For crying out loud." I mumbled a little too loudly.

"I'm grateful that you guys risked...your lives to get me and Lindsey out of the casino, but I have to go back."

"Why are you still hooked on Jack?" Hatter asked.

I would also love to know that same thing.

"I told you. He's trying to help me."

"Really? It sounds like he was using you." Hatter said.

"Alice. Maybe this isn't the best time, but since we've gotten out of there, we know what it's like. We need help. We need back up. We can't just go back in there." I said before I sneezed.

"Lindsey is catching cold. Do you really-"

"I can go in there myself. She trusts you, she can just stay with you and Charlie." Alice said cutting him off.

I wanted to say something else but I didn't want to make things worse.

"Alice." It was clear to me, Hatter was more concerned for her then me. I didn't matter. Like I said, every guy wanted her. Not me.

"Don't you care about what happened to everyone else?" Hatter asked.

"Yes. I'm one of the lives that the queen's ruined."

"Give the resistance a chance."

"I've met those guys already."

"I'm siding with Alice on them." I said quickly. I didn't want to go back there again. Dodo was crazy. And he wasn't a great character in the book. Just...dumb.

"That's only one arm of the organization. I'll head right to the head of it."

"Okay. Who's the head?"

"No one knows his name, but he goes by a code name. Caterpillar."

As soon as Hatter said that I was sold. "Alice. We can just give him a chance. He is trying to help us as well as everyone else in wonderland." I told her.

Alice sighed and nodded with Hatter's plan.

As Hatter headed back to his boat, Charlie took me and Alice back to the ruined castle where we waited for Hatter to come back. And I took a good nap and got warm.
