Chapter 23

Hours Later

In the morning

The rain had cleared some time during the night. Sunlight streaming all at once through the windows. Various articles of clothing were spread throughout the bedroom.

Ringing from Lucas's cellphone woke him up. He carefully got out of bed. Put back on his boxers and quietly scanned his calls then texts. Seeing a message from Aurora instantly pop up. He decides to wait until he leaves before reading it.

Instead he get's back into bed and watches her as she sleeps. Wanting to savor the moment for as long as he can of her being so happy and content. But the illusion soon fades when Brooke wakes up.

She smiles up at him. Her entire face lighting up. And Lucas remembers what brought here to this moment and he feels his heart sink.

"I forgot how you cute you look first thing in the morning."

"Have you been up long.? I could make us some breakfast if you're hungry." Brooke said. Sitting up. One of the multiple sheets was wrapped around her naked body.

"Last was a mistake." Lucas admitted.

Brooke looked back at him with an expression of hurt on her face.

"Luke how can you say that. We love each other. It took us months to get here. Why would you regret it.?" Brooke asked.

Lucas took a breath and spoke honestly.

"Us having sex was a distraction. I poured my heart out to you and instead of giving me an actual answer. We rushed back here because of the rain. And we ended up in this bed. This moment between us. Was held off because it was supposed to be meaningful and unforgettable. Us strengthening our love and connection. Instead it's a lie. And i can't give live the rest of my life waiting for the other shoe to drop."

"What you didn't know was that our dinner together was meant to be a celebration. I was planning to propose but i didn't and that was the right choice." Lucas said.

Brooke's chest felt heavy. She couldn't meet his gaze.

"What do you want from me Lucas.?" Brooke asked.

"Honesty. Do you see us having a future together or not.?" Lucas questioned.

"I don't know. This situation with my parents has me twisted in every direction. We love each other. Can't that be enough at least for now.?" Brooke asked.

"No it can't and won't be. I need time apart from you. You know what i'm going to be honest. I need this to be over. I can't be half in you're life or have you settle for me. I love you too much for that. I'm going to leave." Lucas said.

Turning from her and he quickly redressed and left the room then the home soon after.
