Chapter 28.
=Normal POV=
[November 17; Afternoon]
[Hunter Ship; Sea]
It was as if everything was moving in slow motion after Astrid threw her ax at Hiccup, and then gave the order for the dragon riders to have their dragons launch a full attack on the lead dragon hunter ship. Astrid planned to attack the boat, be careful of Toothless, and when the madness was over, grab Toothless to take him away from Hiccup, who the riders now believed was a traitor to them and dragons for his choice to trust and befriend the hunters. As the ax whirled through the air, Hiccup never moved until just before the weapon was in front of him. Hiccup's eyes opened as he put his left hand up, revealing the palm; the ax came to an immediate halt, remaining suspended and unmoving.
"Wh-What?!" Exclaimed Astrid. All the riders were staring in complete shock at the scene they witnessed. Hiccup only opened his eyes and put his hand up, but the ax just stopped in mid-air and now wouldn't move at all.
Calmly, Hiccup leaned forward a bit and inspected the blade, running his finger along the edge. "You know, Astrid…You really should take better care of your weapon." Hiccup informed. "The edge is dull and knicked up. One of these days, you're going to make the mistake of throwing it at something you shouldn't, and it will just shatter." He added with a smile before standing straight again. "Here. Unlike you, I won't take something that means a lot to someone," Hiccup smirked as the ax was encased with a white glow, one matching Hiccup's left hand.
The dragon riders saw Hiccup chuckle at the looks on their faces from what they saw. Hiccup moved his hand as the ax followed, but he never touched it. Hiccup finally shot his hand outward towards Astrid as the ax flew her way. Astrid's eyes widened, and she put her hands up to defend herself. However, Astrid found that the ax stopped right in front of her, still glowing a transparent white. The ax settled into her lap before Hiccup closed his hand and set it at his side; the light disappeared on his hand and the ax.
"Woah…" Dagur said in shock.
"Did you know he could do that?" Tuffnut and Ruffnut asked each other in surprise.
"Honestly, did you think I was going to hurt you?" Astrid looked at him, panting a little from the scare. "You might have angered and hurt me, but that doesn't mean I would inflict any harm on or kill you. That's not who I am, and never will be. I know without a doubt in my mind what the answer to the question I've asked you twice is, your reaction was all I needed to tell me the truth." Hiccup stated to her. "Now, can I get on with my life without any more interference from you and Berk?" He asked as they all looked his way. "Or are you going to keep trying to fight me?"
Astrid didn't answer as she tried to glare at him, but was still stricken by the move he pulled with her ax. In all the situations on Berk where Hiccup's powers flared up, there was never a physical manifestation of them through a transparent white glow. And Hiccup never had such control. All of the riders were looking at him, Dagur and Heather appeared to hold the most shock as Hiccup knew the Berkians didn't tell them he had powers, so now they knew and got to see it first hand.
"You want to take over the dragon riders? Fine, go ahead, I don't care. Good luck with them, maybe they'll listen to you. But don't think for a second that I've turned my back on anyone, or dragons." Hiccup remarked.
"They're killing dragons for profit! And you're alright with that?!" Heather screeched in anger.
"Don't be foolish, Heather. I don't like it any more than you," Hiccup corrected firmly.
"Then-!" The riders started.
"But I know why they do it, and I understand." Hiccup cut them off. "I understand that you have to do what you can to take care of your people. It may not be an ideal method, but I get what it means to sacrifice something for something else."
"You don't know what sacrifice means if that's the lame reasoning you just fed us," Astrid glared at him.
"No? You think I don't know what sacrifice means, Astrid?" Hiccup folded his arms now. "So I didn't risk mine and Toothless's lives against Red Death to stop the raids on Berk even though I'd been disowned and cast out by my tribe?" He stared at them with cold eyes. "What about when Alvin came to Berk looking for the dragon conqueror, and everyone told me to hide? Didn't I give myself up so he would let you go?" The riders continued to look somewhat angry but glancing down.
"What about when you got the Scourge of Odin, girl? Was Hiccup not willing to lose the Buffalord to Viggo as long as Hiccup could get the cure to save you from dying?" Astrid looked down entirely after Ryker brought that up. "I mean, Hiccup knew we weren't gonna get very far with it anyway, but still. He was willing to sacrifice a dragon's life for yours." Ryker shrugged.
"And Hiccup wasn't just willing to lose the Dragon Eye last November in our battle, but he did throw it into the volcano to save you from me," Viggo mentioned casually with his hands behind his back. Astrid huffed, closing her eyes, but knew he was right.
"I know what it means to sacrifice because I've done it so many times," Hiccup stated. "I'm always ready and willing to save the people I love and care about with no regard for myself." He added. "I understood from a very young age being born as the heir and one day, the chief of a tribe, that it was my job to protect my people. And a good leader is always ready and willing to give their life for their people." Hiccup continued, seeing all of them look down now.
"Okay, that's it!" Astrid gripped her ax. "We're done with this conversation, and we are taking Toothless with us. You don't deserve to call yourself a dragon rider, traitor." She pointed her ax towards the boats.
"Astrid, I assure you that this is not something-," Hiccup started.
"Shut up!" Astrid interrupted.
Hiccup's eyes showed a growing irritation. "I've been more than patient and fair after your last two attacks," He continued. "If you come at me again, there will be serious repercussions for your actions,"
The dragon riders looked at Astrid now, wondering what to do. "I'm not scared of you…" Astrid scowled but glanced to the side.
"Your hesitation says otherwise," Viggo commented as Ryker nodded.
"You're not in this!" Astrid scolded.
"You're about to attack our ships over nothing!" Ryker scoffed.
"He's right. We're very much in this," Viggo added.
"Enough already!" Snotlout groaned. "Are we taking them out or not?"
"Yes," Astrid affirmed.
"Then let's get blasting!" Ruffnut and Tuffnut grinned, high-fiving each other.
"Prepare to fire!" Astrid ordered.
The dragons glanced at one another, then at Hiccup, but they didn't make any move to prepare their attacks. Stormfly gave a sad squawk. The other dragons looked at one another with uncertainty. "Prepare to attack," Astrid said again.
The dragons sadly charged their blasts. "Astrid, I am warning you…Call it off." Hiccup said. "Don't make me have to stop you with force."
"Fi-," Astrid started to yell.
"Astrid!" Heather stopped her. "Don't."
"Why not?" Astrid snapped.
"The dragons don't want to do this," Fishlegs informed. "Just look at them," He looked down at Meatlug, who had her eyes closed. Astrid looked around at the others, who were doing the same.
Heather stated. "They don't want to fire at their friends; it's not right. Regardless of Hiccup being friends with hunters, the dragons won't attack Hiccup or Toothless because they know Hiccup and Toothless would never fire at them or us, no matter what. And I hate to say it…But the hunters nor Hiccup have attacked us at all…We came after them, and attacked for no reason…Doing this makes us the bad guys."
"Are you serious right now?!" Astrid fumed.
"We can still destroy the ships and get Toothless." Snotlout huffed. "Let's not give them a chance to attack us!"
"No, Fishlegs and Heather are right. The dragons don't want to attack, and we shouldn't make them." Dagur stated firmly. "The dragons feel more than we do, don't they? If Hiccup were bad or whatever…The dragons would sense that and probably wouldn't hesitate at all. But they know Hiccup is still good-hearted. He's not…Doing anything wrong…"
"We're taking down the hunters, and the traitor. That is final! That is an order!" Astrid glared.
"Astrid, don't do it." Hiccup narrowed his eyes. "Don't you even dare think about it…" He warned. "Back off, you're going too far, and you know I won't deal with it."
"Oh, says the traitor standing on a dragon hunter ship and friends with them!?" Astrid glared. "But, I'm going too far in stopping more innocent dragons from being killed?!"
"I swear to the Gods, Astrid Hofferson," Hiccup started as a few eyes widened, including Astrid's. "If you push this, I will not hold back, and I will give you a reason to be afraid of me." He threatened coldly. "Now, fall back." The riders saw the white aura around Hiccup's fists. "I promise you that will regret it for the rest of your life." Hiccup warned as the aura stopped flashing and just remained, showing transparent inside to see his hands, but the outline of transparency was solid white. "Call off the attack,"
"No. Fire," Astrid ordered. The dragons didn't know what to do. Heather, Dagur, and Fishlegs were also looking at one another, unsure of the decision made. "I said fire! He's guilty of treason! I order you to fire your attacks and sink them!" She condemned.
"This is your final warning to stop and last chance to retreat," Hiccup's eyes now flashed white. "I'm giving you a direct order. Don't test me; it will be the last thing you ever do with dragons…"
"Don't listen to him; I'm in charge of the dragon riders. Destroy these ships!" Astrid commanded firmly. The dragons whimpered with blasts ready. "Now!" With all the yelling from their riders, and not knowing what to do; the dragon just unleashed a barrage of fire, and spines towards the ship Hiccup was on. Astrid smirked as the attack neared and was about to strike with the hunters panicking.
Hiccup closed his eyes. "Very well. As you've made your decision…Then I've made mine." Hiccup raised his hand like earlier when he managed to stop Astrid's ax. "It's unfortunate you didn't take my warning seriously. I'm disappointed, but also not surprised." Hiccup sighed before his eyes opened to reveal them glowing white. Hiccup threw out both arms, leaving his wrists bent up and the palms exposed. The white aura appeared around both as the attack instantly stopped before it hit the ship.
"What?" Astrid's eyes widened more.
"H-How?" Heather blinked.
Hiccup smirked as he brought his hands up, lifting the spine shots and balls of fire as well, then quickly dropping both arms at a swipe-like angle. The attack just fell into the water. "You know what I find amazing?" Hiccup asked them as the riders continued to stare in shock. "How much easier it is to control my abilities when I break free from the chains holding me back or down." He smiled. "Now, why don't we wrap this little unwanted encounter up. We've got things to do, places to be, and people to see. I'll ask you three things, and this time, I want an answer," He paused then glared as Astrid flinched a bit. "What gives you the authority to decide I can't have my dragon? What gives you're the right to take my dragon? What power do you have to try and take my dragon?"
"You don't deserve to have a dragon when you're working with dragon hunters. It goes against everything we dragon riders stand for. You betrayed us, so you don't deserve to keep leading us." Astrid replied.
"Is that what you believe?" Hiccup inquired calmly. Astrid nodded. "What about the rest of you?" The other riders, excluding Heather and Dagur, who were still confused about everything, nodded in agreement to Astrid's belief. "That's a shame." Hiccup shrugged. "Unfortunately for you, I also don't care," Hiccup's voice was cold. "Now, here's what I believe…" He paused before his eyes narrowed angrily. "You don't have a say in anything regarding the dragon riders. It doesn't matter if I'm there or not, I'm still the leader. I'm still in charge because without me…" Hiccup grinned. "You wouldn't be riders." Their eyes widened again.
"Hiccup, that's not-," Astrid started. "Wait!"
"Shut your mouth," Hiccup ordered. "Without me, you wouldn't be dragon riders. Without Toothless and me, you wouldn't even have peace with dragons." The riders winced at his anger. "You dare even consider you can take away my dragon when we're the ones who gave you this life?" He growled almost.
"It wasn't all you!" Snotlout argued.
"No? Who befriended, trained, and learned to ride a Night Fury?" Hiccup asked.
"You…"
"Who tried to show everyone that we didn't have to fight dragons?" Hiccup pushed.
"You…"
"Who taught you how to earn a dragon's trust? Taught you how to ride them? Train them?" Hiccup stared.
"You…"
"And who risked his and his dragon's lives at the nest to kill an enormous dragon, which stopped the raids, and allowed for you to live in peace with dragons?" Hiccup glared.
"You…" The dragon riders sighed.
"That's right. Me and Toothless." Hiccup reminded. "Ah, so soon we forget who started it all. But that's fine," Hiccup clapped his hands, rubbing them together. "Want to know why?" He asked as they looked at him curiously. "Because I know a sure-fire way you'll never forget who gave you the peaceful lives you have with dragons, or who made you dragon riders again…" Hiccup informed as he sighed, closing his eyes. "I had really hoped I wouldn't have to do this, but since you left me no choice…" He looked at Toothless, giving him a nod. "Do it, bud."
Toothless stepped up beside Hiccup and looked up at the dragons before he raised his wings, roared out, and stomped his two front paws onto the ship's deck. The other dragons began to shift around more, bobbing their heads up and down. The riders tried to settle them down, but it did nothing. Toothless moved his wings down against his body as the dragons with a low croon as the dragons flew over to the ship and sat down on the deck, ignoring their rider's commands. Toothless nodded his head to the dragons, then they shook hard enough to knock the passengers off and walk over to stand between hunters and behind Toothless.
"What did you do!" Astrid snapped.
"I did what I said I was going to do if you attacked me with your dragons." Hiccup replied calmly as he looked at his former friends.
"You didn't say you were going to do any of what you just did!" Snotlout yelled, moving to get in Hiccup's face.
"Oh, but I did," Hiccup folded his arms now. "I told you that if you pushed me, I wouldn't hold back. I told you I gave you a direct order, and if you tested me, it would be the last thing with dragons you ever did." He repeated. "So, I do hope your desire to get back at me for being who I am and doing what I do was worth it," Hiccup gave them a cold look. "Because now you get to regret your mistake of not listening to me, and face the repercussions of your actions…By losing your dragons." He informed.
The dragon riders' eyes widened, showing shock and fear. "No…" The seven whispered.
"Yes," Hiccup responded.
"Y-You wouldn't…" Astrid forced out.
"I wouldn't?" Hiccup arched a brow and then glared hard. "I just did."
"Hiccup!" Heather gasped.
"Come on," Tuffnut said quickly.
"That's…Not fair…" Ruffnut frowned.
"You can't do this!" Snotlout went to hit Hiccup, but Ryker pulled the boy back and shoved him on the ground with the rest of his friends.
"You don't get to decide who can and can't have a dragon if you were just on us about taking Toothless from you!" Astrid retorted.
"I can when I'm head of the dragon riders. You can't step in because I'm friends with hunters, and take my position away. It doesn't work like that, Astrid. But I can't expect you to know how a chain of command works; you were born a commoner." Hiccup stated.
"What does that have to do with anything! We're a team, and you up and left to be friends with them. That means you abandoned your job, and anyone can take it." Astrid snapped. "I was your second in command, which is right under the leader. And if the leader can't perform their duties, the second in command takes over until they can!" Astrid remarked.
"And who the hell said I couldn't or wasn't performing my duties as leader of the riders?" Hiccup asked. "The dragon riders are there to keep the peace between tribes, learn about dragons, train them if there's an issue. I've become friends with, to me, former enemies, which is something we've done with both Alvin and Dagur, and they have left you alone since returning to work as hunters. Therefore, I'm keeping the peace. I'm traveling all around and learning plenty, so I'm learning about dragons. And I've trained dragons that they can't get control of, meaning I'm still training dragons." He paused.
"And all they are doing, despite killing dragons, is taking care of their tribe." Hiccup informed calmly. "Also, it's my job to keep my riders in line when they do wrong. And as I said, you used your dragons to attack the innocent. I've deemed that Viggo, Ryker, and the hunters are okay. As a leader, that's my call to make. You don't have to agree with or like it. But you do have to obey the command of your leader and deal with and accept my decision. So…Tell me where I'm not doing my job?"
"He's not wrong…" Fishlegs shrugged.
"That means I legally still hold my position as leader, and as victor…I choose what happens to you. And I decide that for attacking the innocent and using your dragons against their will…You lose your dragons." Hiccup folded his arms over one another.
"What? We never did that!" The group shouted.
"But you did, when you decided to attack a fellow rider and the dragon hunters, who have done nothing to you this whole time since the encounter began." Hiccup enlightened as their eyes widened. "And I didn't teach you how to train and ride dragons so you could use them to against their wishes." The riders froze as Hiccup stared with cold eyes. "I don't care who you are, enemy or an ally…I won't stand for what I saw you do to those dragons, after ample warnings to stop. I absolutely draw the line at you forcing them to do anything when they don't want to." His tone became cold. "You forced your dragons to strike against their wills. That is not what dragon riders do, even when fighting enemies!"
"These dragons are not your weapons. Not your tools. They are living, breathing, creatures with a will of their own, and are supposed to be your friends!" Hiccup continued, enraged now, as the riders shuddered at his anger, bowing their heads and unable to look at him. "And now the punishment for using the dragons against their wills to attack the innocent and me when I warned you to stop is as I said before. You're losing your dragons."
"You can't do that!" Astrid yelled.
"I can, and I am." Hiccup stared coldly. "You will not break the peace Toothless, and I nearly died for, and you will not abuse the bonds or gifts of friendship with these dragons for personal gain." He paused, his eyes falling colder. "So as I'm the one who gave it all to you…I'm the one who will be taking it all away. You've lost the privilege of having the dragons in your lives; they will be staying with Toothless and me where they will be safe."
"Hiccup, no! Please?!" Heather pleaded.
"We tried to make Astrid stop…" Fishlegs looked down.
Hiccup kept his arms crossed over one another. "Brother…Please?" Dagur approached him slowly with his hands up. "Hiccup, you know I don't get all serious like this, much less sympathetic or…Emotional…But please don't do this? Please don't take my dragon…Heather and I saw that the dragons didn't want to attack, and we told blondie not to make them. I-I know that they still attacked, but I think it was because they just got so worked up by all the arguing and commands…" Dagur tried with his hands together, and head bowed on them in front of Hiccup. "Please reconsider your decision…"
Heather joined next to her brother, pleading with her eyes. "The riders showed on Berserker, told us Viggo and Ryker were alive and had you captured with Toothless…They said they needed help to get you back." She explained. "You know Dagur, and I see you like a little brother, Hiccup…We came because we wanted to help, and while it…It doesn't make sense how you befriended these two…It's whatever. We know you have a good heart, and you see the best in people, even if others don't. So if you want to be their friend, okay, fine. We don't want to fight you about it…But please don't take our dragons from us?... Please?"
Hiccup looked to Viggo and Ryker, who gave him the silent response of it being his decision, and they'd support it. Hiccup glanced at Toothless, then motioned with his head towards behind him, giving a single nod. Toothless moved over to Windshear and Sleuther, nuzzling them and having them walk up to Hiccup when he did. "Because you had nothing to do with what Berk did to me, and you did try to stop Astrid earlier…You can have your dragons back." Hiccup remarked.
Dagur and Heather both let out the breath they'd been holding in, smiling. "Thank you, brother…" The siblings said as Hiccup moved a bit to let them get to their dragons.
"Yeah, yeah…Toothless," The Night Fury looked at him as he motioned to Meatlug now. Toothless looked at Meatlug and told her to come over too. "Fishlegs." Hiccup said as the blond-haired male looked at him. "Come here."
Fishlegs kept his head down until he reached Hiccup, then looked up at him. "Y-Yes?"
"I won't drop what happened on Berk…" Hiccup started as Fishlegs tensed in fear. "You abandoned me like the rest of them did. But I know you love your dragon and would never make Meatlug do anything. I also know you tried to make Astrid see that the dragons didn't want to do what they did, so I will allow you to have your dragon back."
Meatlug happily wagged her tail as she came rushing up to Fishlegs to tackle him down and lick his face. Toothless sat beside Hiccup, letting Hiccup pet his head and scratch under his chin. Finally, Fishlegs got up and stood with Meatlug. "Thank you, Hiccup…"
"Now, mount up and get out of here before I change my mind…" Hiccup warned. Heather, Fishlegs, and Dagur scrambled to get on their dragons and prepare to leave. "Take these four with you as well. Maybe they can tell you the truth about what happened on the way, and I assume they'll reach Berk if I send them with you rather than in a rowboat…" He stated coldly.
"You got it, Hiccup," Heather smiled.
"Just…If you need anything, brother…" Dagur started.
"I know, Dagur. If I need anything, I know where to find you," Hiccup replied as Viggo and Ryker stood beside Hiccup, both with their hands on one of his shoulders. "Oh! One more thing…" Hiccup called as they stopped to look back. "A final, but fair warning, Hooligans…" He paused slightly with a smirk that made them nervous. "Don't get any bright ideas about training another dragon to come after me in revenge or next time…Not only will I lock you in a cell as my prisoners, but I won't let you go until I see fit and when I do let you out, you'll return home safe and sound to find that I've relocated every dragon on Berk so that you don't have them at all anymore." Hiccup informed calmly, but the seriousness was in his tone regardless. The Hooligans paled. "With that in mind, enjoy your flight back home!" Not more than a moment later, the three riders who got to keep their dragons were out of sight as fast as possible.
