A few minutes later Liza came into the parlor and called everyone for dinner. Mandie took her place next to Joe, across the table from Celia and Johnathan.
Joe looked over at Mandie's uncle John and frowned, and then he looked at Mandie. Mandie shrugged and looked down at her hands.
Liza carried in the main setting, followed by Aunt Lou with the side dishes on a tray. Joe dug into the bowls and plates of food and filled his plate and then passed each dish to the others. Mandie filled her plate and whispered to Joe, "Ask Uncle John a question, something that might get him to tell us what he was doing in your room," Mandie prodded Joe with her crutch.
Joe bent towards her and whispered back, "Why don't you? He is your uncle."
"Because you were the one that saw him in your room, and you're older than me," Mandie whispered in reply, and opening her eyes wide, added, "Please?"
Joe looked into her pleading face for a moment and then sat up straight and said, "Mr. Shaw, anything important happen today?"
Mandie choked on her food and her eyes opened wide. Joe looked at her and his eyes said, "What?"
Mandie's uncle looked at Joe for a moment before replying, "No, just the usual."
Joe nodded his head respectfully and then looked down and picked at his food. Mandie looked at him and then reached out and squeezed his hand under the table. Joe looked up at her, and Mandie whispered," It's alright. You tried."
Joe nodded his head and went back to eating. Mandie looked up and caught her uncle looking at them suspiciously. Mandie wanted to look back down but doing that would make them look even more suspicious, so she smiled good-naturedly.
He looked at her for a moment longer, and then went back to his conversation with Mandie's mother.
Mandie softly tapped her fork against the plate and thought, 'It's strange that I haven't seen Jason Bond around lately. I wonder what he's up to.'
The rest of the dinner was quiet for Mandie and her three friends. Mandie's mother and Uncle John conversed for the rest of the meal. Mandie tried to eat as quickly as she possibly could without choking again. She noticed that Joe, Celia, and Johnathan were as well, though that was normal for Joe and Johnathan. Mandie pressed her lips together turning the clue over in her mind. Inside out and outside out. In every way possible. She could still not think of a plausible solution.
'Rushing rushing. Singing singing. Beating beating. Slam slam. You're scared. You don't know how. Keep on keep on. Don't stop. Fight. What am I? Where am I? Where are you?' Mandie thought about what the clue said over and over. 'What could it possibly be? What rushes, sings, beats, and slams? What am I scared of? Why do I have to keep on and fight? I don't know how to do what? Why can't I stop?' Mandie sighed. She couldn't think of anything. And the other strange things that had happened? Well, they weren't the furthest thing from her mind either. They were all crowding in on her. Everthing.
After dinner Mandie and her friends went to sit on the porch. Mandie and Joe sat down on the bench swing while Celia and Johnathan ensconced themselves in porch chairs across from Mandie and Joe.
"Do you have anything yet, Mandie?" Celia asked, addressing Mandie's knowledge of the newly found clue.
Mandie shook her head, "No. Still nothing." Mandie's hair blew in the soft, cool wind.
Mandie felt really discouraged. It was the first time that she had no idea of where the next clue might be.
Joe completely understood how Mandie felt and he wished he could do something to relieve the utter hopelessness from the innermost part of Mandie's aching heart. But, there was nothing. He felt as empty as a dry lake.
Mandie leaned back in her seat and sighed. She felt this dark pain in her soul. Like she knew where the next clue was deep inside, but she couldn't dig it out. She felt like she never could.
Suddenly Mandie stood up, "I'm going to go for a walk." She began to make her way down the porch, leaning on her crutch.
Joe stood up as well, "I'll come with you," he said, but Mandie laid a hand on his arm and said, "Alone. I want to be alone."
Joe looked deeply into her eyes, backed away and sat back down, watching her slowly retreating form head down the path.
Mandie made her way down the road and then turned off and began to walk down a little path leading into the forest.
The leaves on the tall trees brushed gently against her face but she didn't push them aside, instead, she walked deeper into the forest, letting the leaves brush against herself at will.
She had never felt so utterly helpless before.
Suddenly Mandie felt a chill crawl down her spine. She sensed that someone or something was in that forest with her.
She wasn't alone like she thought. Mandie wished that she had allowed Joe to come with her. She quickened her pace as the creepy feeling became stronger. Out of the blue she walked out of the trees into a clearing, and in the clearing was a tunnel made out of bricks and mudding. The mouth of the tunnel opened at about ten feet tall and five feet wide. Vines grew all over it nearly concealing it from view. Mandie stood dumbstruck, then she slowly began to walk forwards. Moving one foot carefully in front of the other. She reached the entrance and stood there, looking carefully inside. Water slowly trailed down the tunnel in snake-like form, slithering deep into the darkness, and dripping out of the tunnel where a small puddle had formed on the ground. The inside of the tunnel walls were an off-white color. White-washed. Mandie gazed inside and then slowly began to back away, the tunnel gave her a creepy feel. 'Just get out of here, Mandie. Go back through the forest to the house, it'll be fine,' she told herself. She walked backwards, not taking her eyes off the tunnel, afraid that if she looked away something would jump out at her.
Suddenly Mandie saw something move out of the corner of her eye. She stood still, her heart racing. Her mind screamed, "RUN! GET OUT OF THERE!" But she couldn't run, not with her crutch. Mandie clamped her jaw down and squeezed her eyes shut tight.
"Whatever happens God is with me. What time I am afraid I will put my trust in Thee," Mandie whispered. She dropped her crutch, and a hand clamped down on her mouth...
