Chapter 23: Target is Sapporo

In a small laboratory, a group of scientists was testing a new type of rocket fuel. So far, the tests were successful. The lead professor nodded in satisfaction. "Excellent. Let's use this compound as fuel on a rocket experiment tomorrow in Hokkaido. If it can work as we hope, it might be able to power a rocket all the way to Mars." The next day, the experiment proved a success, the liquid fuel holding enough explosive power to launch a rocket even with only one-hundred cc.

Naturally, such a powerful fuel source caught Shocker's attention. They unveiled their newest cyborg, Flying-Squirdle, a cyborg modeled after the Japanese giant flying squirrel. 'Excellent work, gentlemen,' Great Leader said, 'You have performed beyond my expectations for this project. A jumping strength of one-hundred meters, and a flying distance of two-hundred meters. Now, Flying-Squirdle, your task to steal the liquid fuel lying asleep in the storehouse of Oosumi Laboratory.'

A Combatman stepped forward. "Forgive my for asking, Great Leader, but why steal that liquid fuel?" 'That fuel is more powerful than anything created before it,' Great Leader explained, 'Oosumi and his partners have proven in their experiments that it is capable of launching rockets with only the most minimal of amounts. In other words, it possesses tremendous explosive power. Right now they have seven-hundred cc of the fuel stored away. By our scientists' estimate, that much of the liquid fuel is the explosive equivalent to around one kiloton of TNT. Flying-Squirdle, we will using this fuel to destroy Sapporo.'

Just then, the alert went off, and a hiker was spotted near the hideout. 'Perfect timing,' Great Leader said, 'This is an excellent chance for you to test your powers.' Flying-Squirdle nodded and targeted the man, flying so fast that he hit supersonic speeds, enough to cause a slipstream, which created a vacuum around the man that destroyed his internal organs. Flying-Squirdle landed and chuckled. "Now for my mission. That liquid fuel will belong to Shocker."

Elsewhere in Sapporo, the racing club was visiting for a bit of vacation time, and because Eclair's superiors had noted something suspicious in the area. The sights were nice, but it was when Goro spotted Flying-Squirdle that the group knew it was time to get to work. Ren headed for the lab he had landed near. "Excuse me," he said to Oosumi, "Did anyone wearing a weird costume barge in here? Possibly to steal something?" "Not that I know of," Oosumi said, "Besides we have nothing of note to-" Before he could finish, they heard one of his students make a cry like he was being strangled.

They hurried to his side. Luckily he was alright, but the nearby liquid fuel storehouse had been broken into. As he came to, he called out, "A… A monster!" Ren whirled around and spotted Flying-Squirdle, with a case in his hand. "Ren Amaki!," he noted, "One of Shocker's most hated enemies!" "So you're Shocker's newest cyborg," Ren said, "A flying squirrel this time. What, is Shocker running out of ideas already?" Flying-Squirdle chuckled. "Hardly. Do not underestimate my power."

He hurried outside, Ren following. Flying-Squirdle displayed his amazing jumping power, much to the surprise of Ren. "You and Naofumi can only jump fifteen meters, and maybe a little higher," Flying-Squirdle noted, "I, on the other hand, am capable of jumping one-hundred meters into the air! Sadly, I've no time to be dealing with you. I need to complete my mission before I have both of you Riders to deal with." And with that, he flew off. Naofumi rode up at that moment. "So we have another cyborg from Shocker. Ready to go?"

Ren nodded, and the two of them activated their belts. "Henshin!" With wind pressure from their leap, they transformed into Kamen Riders 1 and 2. They hopped on their Cyclones and rode after the flying cyborg. Several Combatmen came in on their own bikes to try stopping the Riders, only to be knocked aside as the duo rammed into them, taking them down. Flying-Squirdle, having wound up exhausting his flight time, landed to confront the Riders. "Just what does Shocker want with that liquid fuel!?," 1 demanded.

Flying-Squirdle chuckled. "Care to take a taste for yourself? What I'm holding here has the explosive force of one kiloton of TNT, enough to destroy the National Diet Building in a single blast." The Riders looked at each other. Thinking they were hesitating, Flying-Squirdle chuckled. "Why not just go home obediently?" 1 nodded. "If you insist!" To the monster's surprise, the two of them gunned their Cyclones in such a way that dirt got kicked into his face, causing him to stumble and drop the briefcase. 2 quickly picked it up. "But we're taking this with us!" They quickly drove off while Flying-Squirdle was still recovering, leaving him growling in anger.

Needless to day Great Leader was not happy about losing the liquid fuel. 'We must retrieve that fuel one way or another. Flying-Squirdle, I trust you can handle the retrieval?' Flying-Squirdle nodded. "I will make sure to take the liquid fuel back, then use it to turn all of Sapporo into a wasteland! And once that is done… I will see the Kamen Riders destroyed!" 'Good,' Great Leader said, 'Now get to it.'

Naofumi and Ren returned the case, containing several vials of the liquid fuel, to Oosumi. "That monster said there was enough fuel here to blow up the Diet building," Naofumi said, "That's the reason they were targeting it in the first place." He carefully picked up a vial. "Still, we can't just dispose of it. It has great potential to benefit human civilization." He placed a small transmitter inside the case. "What's that for?," Oosumi asked. "Shocker won't give up so easily," Ren noted, "But this time should they steal the case, we'll be able to trace their hideout."

"That's all well and good," Oosumi said, "But perhaps it would be best if we have these samples degraded to prevent them from being explosive anymore. We can always recreate it from our research once Shocker is no longer after it." The phone started ringing, and Oosumi answered it. "Hello? Ah, yes. If the official from the Tokyo's Radiology Center arrives, have him brought to my office." "Radiology center?," Naofumi asked. Oosumi nodded. "They're delivering a special radioactive material 235. With it we can transform the liquid fuel into a water-like state."

Naofumi called Tobei at the racing club headquarters, as well as the club itself still at the hotel room. "Experimental liquid fuel?," Motoyasu asked, "What, is Shocker trying to build a new type of missile or something?" 'We're not sure just yet,' Naofumi replied, 'Their latest monster spoke of the samples having enough power to blow up the Diet Building, so it's possible they're targeting a major city.'

Meanwhile, at Chitose Airport, a notable radiologist was being offered a ride by a man claiming to be from the radiology center's Hokkaido branch. The radiologist was confused, having not been informed of such a thing. Still, he got inside the vehicle, being spotted by Tobei who was also arriving to aid the others. As the vehicle moved to a dirt road, Flying-Squirdle launched a flare to stop the vehicle, causing the radiologist to get out in concern, only to get attacked by the monster.

Later, the vehicle arrived at the lab. The men inside approached one of the assistants. "We're here with the 235 Professor Oosumi requested." "Of course," the assistant said, "Please, come inside." Before walking inside, one of the two men nodded to Flying-Squirdle, hiding in a nearby tree. The men came into the lab, only to reveal themselves as Combatmen, the case they were carrying containing a smokescreen. The leader grabbed the case and brought it outside, where he tossed it to Flying-Squirdle.

Inside, the Combatmen were quickly dispatched and the two Riders ran outside, spotting Flying-Squirdle escaping on a motorcycle. They nodded at each other. "Henshin!" They leapt over to their Cyclones, transforming into their Rider forms as they did. Flying-Squirdle managed to lose them inside a tunnel, or so he thought, not noticing that Motoyasu was waiting on the other end of the tunnel just in case. "I have confirmation of the monster," he said into a two-way, "Looks like he doesn't realize the transmitter is active."

'Indeed,' 1 replied, 'Follow him carefully, but don't confront him directly. A trained human is more than a match for a Combatman, but Shocker cyborg is another story.' Motoyasu nodded. "Got it." Meanwhile, the two Riders wound up getting ambushed by Combatmen as they tried to turn around. They quickly took the grunts out, then 2 checked the transmitter. "Okay, I have it at forty-five degrees south." Meanwhile, the girls had managed to have two captive Combatmen drive them to the hideout, Eclair using her gun to threaten the driver.

Motoyasu caught up to Flying-Squirdle, only to have to contend with his slipstream effect. Luckily, Motoyasu's body was stronger due to his history in the Tokyo Drift, meaning he was trained to withstand a greater g-force. "Impressive," Flying-Squirdle admitted, "You'd make an exceptional cyborg yourself." "Only if it was under my own terms," Motoyasu retorted. Just then, the twin Riders appeared, shocking Flying-Squirdle. "You managed to track me. Very well."

Before he could make his move, he got shoulder tackles by Motoyasu, causing him to drop the case with the liquid fuel. This let 1 grab the case, but Flying-Squirdle just laughed. "Seems my men have something of yours on Mount Usu." The Riders looked. Eclair, Rishia, Malty, and Raphtalia had been captured, the Combatmen having played a trick to get the upper hand. "Hand over the case, right now," Flying-Squirdle said, "Or they will die." 1 scoffed, but handed over the case.

Flying-Squirdle flew over to where the girls were being held. "Let them go. We have what we need." The Combatmen nodded and walked away, only for one of them to get knocked out by Rishia throwing a rock at his head. This gave the Riders they opening they needed to leap in. "We agreed to hand over the case," 2 said. "But not to let you keep it once they were free," 1 pointed out. He started dispatching the Combatmen while 2 battled Flying-Squirdle, managing to get the case away from him.

The two continued to battle along the mountainside, Flying-Squirdle using his slipstream to try attacking 2. 2, however, simply used the sudden wind to fly higher into the air, letting him reach the squirrel monster with a flying attack. "Rider Kick!" He struck Flying-Squirdle in the back, sending him hurtling onto the ground and right onto the liquid fuel, blowing them both up. In spite of the massive explosion, 2 managed to get away in time.

1 ran up to his partner. "That was too close. Looks like he wasn't kidding about the potency." 2 nodded. "A shame about the fuel though. Let's hope Oosumi wasn't kidding about being able to recreate it." They got back on their bikes, their friends and loved ones cheering for them as they headed back for home. Yet another terrifying Shocker plot had been foiled before it could truly begin. With any luck, they could continue this streak until they either found and defeated Shocker's Great Leader, or Shocker ran out of resources.

To be continued…

Yeah, a rather bizarre decision to use a squirrel. Still, they made it work. We'll have more action next chapter. Read and review.
