Volume 2: Chapter 10 Mountain Glenn
At Beacon
General Ironwood was at the landing docks at Beacon looking out at the city of Vale, while several Airships were flying over the city on their patrol routes. After a while Professor Goodwitch walks up to him.
"Trouble sleeping?" she asks.
"Arm was acting up." said General Ironwood, as he turns to face Professor Goodwitch while also gripping his right shoulder with his left arm.
"Of course, so logically you got out of bed, dressed yourself completely and decided to gaze menacingly out into the distance." said Professor Goodwitch, who then gets closer to the General and sees the troubled look on his face. "What's wrong?" she asks.
"I've trusted him for years. We both have. I just... I can't help but feel like he's keeping us in the dark." said General Ironwood.
"Don't be ridiculous! You know very well that we are not the ones in the dark." said Professor Goodwitch.
General Ironwood lets out a sarcastic chuckle and replies "That makes it worse! I refuse to believe that a man I've trusted for so long would act so... passively."
Professor Goodwitch puts a hand on the generals shoulder to reassure him and says "You're a good person, James. You've always done what you think is best for the people, even against strong protest. It's admirable. But it's high time you stopped talking about trust and started showing it. Ozpin has experience that the rest of us lack. And I think that's something worth remembering."
"I know, but it still doesn't explain this feeling I have that he knows more than he is letting on." said General Ironwood.
"Oh, and why is that?" asked Professor Goodwitch.
"The way that he talks about what has been happening in the kingdom for the last couple of weeks, it's like he knows what is going to happen. What the outcome is going to be, and seeing him show no emotion makes me worried." said General Ironwood.
"Like I said it's time you stopped talking about trust and started showing it more." said Professor Goodwitch.
"Alright, then explain to me how he knew what was happening at the docks a couple of months ago. Or how he knew when to come in and help out Thomas." said General Ironwood in frustration.
"I can't explain that to you." said Professor Goodwitch, after which the two stared off into the nights sky in silence.
Team RRWBY"s campsite
At the campsite Ruby was still keeping watch to make sure no intruders would make their way over to the camp. She sees a single Beowolf walking through the city, making her grab her weapon only for it to walk away from their camp. Ruby then puts her weapon away.
In the sleeping area of the camp, Yang, Weiss, Rock and Blake are all having trouble sleeping. Yang is the first one to run out of patience due to being unable to fall asleep and speaks up "Blake, are you awake?"
"Yeah." replies Blake in a silent voice.
"Why do you think he asked us about being a huntress? Like, what was he trying to say?" asked Yang.
"Maybe he was just curious." said Blake.
"You think?" asked Yang.
"Weiss, Rock are you two awake?" asked Yang.
"Ugh, what do you want?" asked Rock in a half asleep yet annoyed tone.
"Of course I'm awake! You two are talking. And I think he... when I said I wanted to honor my family's name, I meant it. But, it's not what you think. I'm not stupid. I'm fully aware of what my father gas done with the Schnee Dust Company. Since he took control, our business has operated in a... moral gray area." said Weiss.
"That's putting it lightly." said Blake.
"You don't have to say that twice." said Rock at the same time.
"Which is why i feel the need to make thing right. If I had taken a job in Atlas, it wouldn't have changed anything. My father was not the start of our name, and I refuse to let him be the end of it." said Weiss.
"All my life, I fought for what I thought was right. As you all know I had a partner named Adam. He was like a mentor to me, and he assured me that what we were doing would make the world a better place. But of course, his idea of a perfect future turned out to be not perfect for everyone."
"I joined the academy because I knew that huntsman and huntresses were regarded as the most noble warriors in the world. Always fighting for good. But I never really thought past that. When I leave the academy, what will I... how can I undo so many years of hate." said Blake.
"I'm sure you'd figure it out. You're not one to back down from a challenge, Blake." said Yang.
"But I am! I do it all the time! When you learned I was a faunus, I didn't know what to do, so I ran! When I realized Adam has become a monster, I ran! Even my semblance! I was born with the ability to leave behind a shadow of myself; an empty copy that takes hit while I run away!" Exclaimed Blake.
"Blake, you may have run away. But you're not a coward, you got into a situation you were unable to deal with and you simply followed your instinct. You shouldn't beat yourself up over that." said Rock.
"Easy for you to say, I heard your talk with Doctor Oobleck. You don't even know what you want your future to be like." said Blake.
"Neither do you, but you're right." said Rock. "I don't know what I want in my future. I was created to be an assistant in a lab, I only changed my fate because I couldn't let Wily get away with what he had done."
"But you and Doctor Oobleck are right, I don't know what I want my future to be. If I want to keep fighting against robots until my demise, or maybe look for a different path in life. And to be honest, I might just pick the latter option." said Rock.
"At least you three have something that drives you. I've just kind of always gone with the flow, y'know? And that's fine, I mean, that's who I am. But how long can I really do that for? I wanna be a huntress, not really because I want to be a hero, but because I want the adventure. I want a life where I won't know what tomorrow will bring."
"And that'll be a food thing. Being a huntress just happens to line up with that. I'm not like Ruby, she's always wanted to be a huntress. It's like she said, ever since she was a kid, she'd dreamt about being the herpes in the books. Helping people and saving the say, and never asking for anything in return."
"Even when she couldn't fight, she knew that's whats she wanted to do. That's why she trained so hard to get where she is today." said Yang.
"Well, she's still just a kid." said Weiss in a snide tone.
"Weiss, I thought you were going to be nicer to her." said Rock, to which Weiss only huffed.
"She's only two years younger. We're all kids." said Blake.
"Well, not anymore. I mean, look where we are! In the middle of a warzone and armed to the teeth." said Yang.
"It's the life we chose." said Blake.
"It's a job. We all had this romanticized vision of being a huntress in our heads! But at the end of the day, it's a job to protect the people! And whatever we want, will have to come second." said Weiss.
Unbeknownst to the, Doctor Oobleck had been listening to their conversation and had fallen back to sleep with a look of pride on his face.
Later that night
Yang was now keeping watch and has been doing so for the past half hour, which allowed for Ruby to have her turn sleeping.
Zwei, who was sleeping near Ruby's sleeping bag, woke up and walked away from Ruby. Which made Ruby wake up from her sleep and made her mumble "Huh? Zwei, it's late. Go back to bed."
Zwei then runs off, causing Ruby to shout whisper "Zwei! Zwei! Ugh!" After which she grabs her weapon and leaves the building, being careful not trip over Rock and his pets and follows her own pet outside "Zwei! Zwei, where are you? Zwei Huh?"
Ruby then sees that her dog is urinating on some of the ruins across the street, making her exclaim "Zwei, this is a wasteland! You literally could have done that anywhere!" After which she follows her dog to the other side of the street.
Ruby then sees two White Fang soldiers turn a corner, making her grab Zwei. After which she quickly hides behind a broken down wall. This caused Zwei to let out a loud bark.
"What was that?" asked the first White Fang soldier.
"What was what?" asked the second White Fang soldier.
"I thought I heard a beowolf or something." said the first White Fang soldier.
"Hmph. Let's just finish our patrol and get back to base. This place is giving me the creeps." said the second White Fang soldier.
The two soldiers then leave the area, after which Ruby hears a door closing. She then lets Zwei walk into the open before asking "Did they go in yet? One bark means yes."
Zwei looks around and lets out one bark.
"Oh! This is it! This is it!" She exclaims, Ruby then grabs her scroll only to see that there is no signal in the area "Aw man! come on, we gotta get the others!" She then grabs her weapon from her back and begins to walk away.
Ruby and Zwei were about to run to the other side of the street, only for the street to fall apart beneath their feet. Ruby grabs onto the ledge with one hand, and holds onto Zwei with the other.
She then throws Zwei out of the hole, and tries to get herself up. Only for her to lose her grip, which causes her to fall down the hole. She then falls into a hug cave with even more ruined buildings and lands on the ground.
The sound of her fall alerting the guards in the area. Two of them get to her and one of them exclaims "Freeze!"
"Where did she come from?" asked another guard.
The guards approach Ruby, who tries to back away from the guards only to get backed into a wall.
"You're a long way from home, little girl." said another guard.
Ruby tries to reach for her weapon, only to realize she dropped it before falling into the hole.
The guards approach her, and one of them tries to grab her arm.
"Hey! Hands off!" Exclaimed Ruby, as she tries to punch the guards away from her. Only for it to fail, and Ruby then gets knocked out by one of the guards.
"The boss is gonna want to see this one." said one of the guards, after which they pick her up and begin to carry her away.
Back on the surface
Yang had just finished her shift and headed back to the camp to wake up Weiss "Hey Weiss, it's your... Ruby? Hey, where's Ruby?" asked Yang.
"What do you mean Ruby... is... right... she is not here." said Rock, who just woke up and began to realize where he was and what was happening.
"What happened?" asked Doctor Oobleck who comes dashing into the room.
After which Zwei came running into the room barking, which attracted brought Snake to the room who asked "What is happening here!"
"Zwei?" asked Yang, who then noticed that the dog was pointing towards the ruined city in a panicked state.
"What's going on?" asked Blake.
"Grab your weapons! I'm afraid Ms. Rose might be in trouble." said Doctor Oobleck, after which the group followed Zwei outside.
They come across the hole, and Yang spots Ruby's weapon.
"Ruby's scythe!" Exclaimed Yang.
"Oh no." said Blake.
""Do you think she fell?" asked Weiss.
"How is this possible, holes don't just appear out of thin air." said Rock.
"Fell?" Asked Doctor Oobleck looking up and around the city.
"Down there." said Weiss.
Doctor Oobleck then looks down the hole and says "Oh my. Of course! Of course, OF COURSE, Of COURSE!"
"What is it?" asked Blake.
"How could I be so stupid!" Exclaimed Doctor Oobleck.
"Doctor Oobleck what's wrong?" asked Rock.
"Mountain Glen! Yes, an expansion of Vale that was inevitably destroyed by creatures of Grimm! Previously home to thousands of people! Working people commuting tot he city, the main city! Developed a subway system to the inner city! Grimm attacks increased!"
"The population was in danger and now desperately searching for shelter. The city evacuates into the metrod tunnel and what do they find? The southeast quadrant of Vale is known for wild forests and deep caves!" Exclaimed Doctor Oobleck.
"Doc, what are you saying?" asked Yang.
"My dear, we're not just looking for an underground crime network, we're looking for a literal underground crime network!" Exclaimed Doctor Oobleck.
"They've been working in caves?" asked Blake.
"No, no, Mountain Glenn was Vale's first serious attempt at expansion. It worked for a short period of time, thanks to an aggressive perimeter defense, and unique transportation. The city developed an elaborate subway system to carry citizens safely from the new territory into the main kingdom! Sadly, without the many natural barriers Vale had to protect it's border, Mountain Glenn was doomed from the start!"
"As the end drew near, the citizens of the territory made one last attempt at survival. They took up shelter beneath the city! In massive caves that they had cleared out for the subway. And they had cut themselves off from the surface." said Doctor Oobleck.
"An underground village?" asked Rock.
"In a matter of speaking, yes. A safe haven. Until... an explosion opened the mouth of another cavern, filled with subterranean Grimm. after that, the kingdom officially sealed off the tunnel, creating the worlds largest tomb, of Ruby is down there, we must find her." said Doctor Oobleck as he took out his thermos and turned it into it's flamethrower form.
In the cave
Ruby wakes up to find herself being carried by one of the White Fang guard through the city, she is then startled by a loud sound coming from one of the soldiers dropping a crate.
"Hey be careful! What are you trying to do, blow us to the moon?" asked one White Fang member.
"Sorry sir!" Said the other member as he immediately went back to work afterwards.
She is then carried further until they reach a warehouse and is put down on the ground. The White Fang member carrying her yells "Hey Boss! Found something you might want to see!"
From within one of the railcars, Ruby hears an unfamiliar voice who calls out "This better be important Perry, cause if it isn't you're going to be on the chopping block for wasting my time"
"Uh, it's a little girl?" Replied Perry, unsure of whether this was good or bad.
Adam then leans through the doorway, sees Ruby and asks "Who is this little girl?"
"No idea lord Taurus, we found her wandering around the cave. What do you want to do with her?" asked Perry.
"Bring her here, I'll have a little chat with our visitor." said Adam with a dark tone in his voice, making Ruby feel uneasy.
"Sure thing Lord Taurus." said Perry, who then brought Ruby over to Adam and then left the area.
"You better not try anything, little girl. Cause the moment you try to run, it's going to be over for you." said Adam, as he grabbed onto the hilt of his sword.
"I won't." Whimpered Ruby in fear.
"Good, now lets have a little walk. Can't have you see our plans, can we?" asked Adam, to which Ruby only nodded. He then grabbed Ruby by her arm and the two made their way away from the train and towards one of the abandoned buildings.
Once they made it inside the buildings, Adam closed the door and turned on one of the lights. He then pointed towards one of the chairs and said "Sit."
Ruby went over to the chair and sat down on it. She then looked at Adam with fear in her eyes, he noticed and said "I'm scary, aren't I. It's the mask right?"
"It... it is." said Ruby.
Adam let out a dark chuckle and replied "Humanity wanted to make monsters out of us, so we decided to embrace it. Now tell me, what are you doing here?"
Ruby stayed silent, contemplating whether or not she should talk. Adam noticed and said "Ms Rose, I think it would be for your best interest to talk while you still can."
"You know who I am?" asked a shocked Ruby.
Adam scoffs and replies with "Tch, Torchwick wouldn't shut up about you. How you had foiled one of his robberies, and then kept popping in his business every once in a while. Then I thought to myself, Rose. Ruby Rose, that name sounded familiar. So I looked into it, and turns out a Summer Rose was put on the no harm list. Same thing goes for Doctor Thomas Light."
"My mother? What was she doing with the White Fang" asked Ruby in shock.
Adam noticed the shock in her eyes and replied "Don't worry, she didn't join us. She just stayed behind to save the faunus living in a village being attacked by the Grimm. She didn't have to, all the other huntsmen had already left with the humans. But she stayed behind to risk her life, and saved the faunus living in that village. And it wasn't the last time she did that."
"Sounds like the stories that I heard about her." Replied Ruby somberly.
"She died when you were very young, didn't she?" asked Adam.
"She did, it impacted everyone in my family." said Ruby.
Adam chuckled darkly, then grabbed onto Ruby, slammed her against a wall and yelled "You know nothing! You think that you know about suffering, just because you lost your mother at a young age! I should slaughter you right now!" Exclaimed Adam as he was about to grab his sword, but then he noticed the fear in Ruby's eyes and hesitated.
Ruby closed her eyes and waited for death to take her. But it never came, she then saw that, despite the mask, he was hesitating. He then put her back into her seat, and said "I'm sorry about that, I've been known to have a temper. It's something I'm trying to work on."
"Yeah, Blake told me." Whispered Ruby.
Unfortunately Adam heard her and said "Blake? Did you say Blake, you know her?"
"Eeep, yeah. She's part of my team at Beacon." said Ruby.
"Your team, tell me. What is the name of your team?" asked Adam.
"Team RRWBY." Replied Ruby awkwardly.
Adam chuckled and replied "Confusing and it rolls of the tongue, so tell me. Who besides you and Blake are on that team?"
"There is my half sister Yang Xiao Long, Rock Light, you know the one you killed and Weiss Schn... Oh crap." said Ruby upon realizing who she was talking to.
"Oh don't be afraid, I know that Weiss Schnee is attending Beacon." said Adam, letting out a chuckle and adding "I can imagine how she must have clashed with the others on the team. Seeing as one of them is from a race oppressed by her family and the other got screwed over by her father."
"How do you know that?" asked Ruby in surprise.
"Don't act so surprised, we have members in Atlas and news travels fast in the underworld." Said Adam "And don't worry, we don't want her dead. Especially if it means that her brother would take over the company, which would be worse for us then if she were to take over from her father."
"You promise." said Ruby in a surprised tone.
"Trust me, I promise." said Adam as he looked Ruby in her eyes, and noticed a certain gleam in her eyes "You know, when I look at you. I can see the innocence in your eyes, as if you haven't realized the harsh reality about the real world yet."
"Because I try to look for the light in even the darkest of places. It's why I became a huntress, to make the world a brighter place." said Ruby.
Adam chuckled and replied "A good mindset to have, but one that eventually is going to get your killed. Besides, the world is a dark and evil place."
"You're wrong, there is still good in the world. There might even be good in you." said Ruby.
"Is that so?" asked Adam, he then stared into Ruby's eyes with the red dots behind his mask. "Tell me little rose, what good can murderer like myself put into the world?"
Ruby looked at Adam in fear, and then replied "You can prevent more people from dying, you can reform the White Fang. Change it to the way it used to be, like Blake said. When it used to be peaceful, or maybe a compromise of both extremes."
Adam sighed and replied "That's going to be harder than it seems, for one me changing the tactics of the White Fang seemed to have attracted even more dangerous members. And even if I tried to leave, the people we are working under would kill us all if we tried to abandon their plan. It's also why Torchwick and the mute ice cream lady are working with us. Now tell us, what are you doing here."
"We're shadowing a huntsman here because we learned that the White Fang is doing work here, Adam please tell us. What are you doing here, we can save all of you. We can save possible hundreds of lives." said Ruby.
Adam chuckled and said "You really are like your mother, trying to save lives even at the cost of your own life."
Footsteps were then heard outside of the door, and the voice of Roman Torchwick was heard "Bully boy, are you in there? I'm respecting your authority as a leader, but I'm ignoring that by coming in anyway."
The door then opened revealing Roman Torchwick, who looked upon the scene and said "Adam, I didn't know it was my birthday already. You really didn't have to."
"She fell into the cave, I didn't bring her here for you." said Adam.
"Doesn't matter, listen here bully boy the plan is about to start and the airship to get you out of here is about to leave. So I suggest you leave little red to me and get out of here before it is too late." said Roman.
Adam sighed and replied "I guess your right matchstick, I'll leave. Pray we never meet again."
"I wouldn't wish for it." said Roman.
Adam then turned to Ruby and said "Goodbye Ruby Rose, let's hope we never meet again. Cause next time I might not spare you." After which he left the room and a bit later an airship was heard taking off.
Roman then turned to Ruby, who got a nervous look on her face, and said "It's great to see you again red, now lets take a walk. We have a lot of things to talk about."
After which Roman grabbed Ruby by her arm and dragged her out of the house and into the open area of the cave.
